GARDEN MUSE By Christine Rowan LATE SUMMER, EARLY FALL Late summer transitions into fall and Mother Nature shrugs her shoulders as leaves begin to drop in a russet-gold flourish. Many people say this is their favourite time of year. I concur. I love garden harvests, cooler temperatures, and scents of alder, cedar and sprucetinged air. At this time of year, most garden chores slow to a more leisurely pace enabling one to indulge in more lawn chair time while enjoying an extra cup of tea. Having less heat and sun this year has meant some crops produced more, while others produced less. By this time last year, I had copious bags of tomato sauce in the freezer, while this year the tomatoes are just starting to ripen. No matter as those that do not mature are perfect for green tomato curry and variations in each year’s harvest make me especially grateful for everything that grows well. We may not have bushels of squash, but we’ve been blessed with incredible potatoes, carrots, storage onions and beets. They are a sight to behold and delicious to eat! After the garlic was dug and hung in the shed to cure, a layer of compost was applied to that area, then sown with the seed of “Dwarf Grey Sugar” peas. These snow peas love cooler temperatures and are smaller in stature. I still give them a short trellis to climb as it keeps things tidy. They will add much-needed nitrogen to the soil via their root nodes. Once these peas are harvested late fall, the remaining vines will be turned back into the soil, and the garlic planted once again in that area. This gives the garlic cloves a nice burst of energy from the nitrogen to enable them a good start. I try to rotate most crops on approximately four-year cycles to lessen chances of disease or pests building in the soil. The early maturing potato “Warba” was dug early August. In their place, well-watered before and after, seedlings of lettuce, kale and Chinese cabbage, as well as direct-sown spinach, beets and Chinese radish were planted. I then applied a floating row cover as a protection from pests such as cabbage looper and root maggot fly. They love cabbage, kale and radishes. As the nights grow increasingly cooler, I will switch out the row cover for a light plastic which helps to retain some of the heat and protect this crop from light to medium frosts. I’m growing on Amaryllis bulbs I purchased last November, keeping them in their pots in a bright window or in the greenhouse and giving them fertilizer high in phosphorus and potash. During the first week of September, I cut the large leaves to about one inch from the top of the bulb and stop watering. Sometimes I’ll put them in a dark cupboard, sometimes I don’t. Usually, by late October or early November, they will start to re-grow. I will then water them once again and am often rewarded with new buds forming and fresh blooms.
