Dear Huckleberry,
Dear Hurts Like Heck,
DEAR HUCKLEBERRY
Dear Huckleberry is an advice column aiming to use a bit of sound advice to
nurture healing and growth, while hopefully making you laugh a little too. This
column is not a substitute for working with a licensed counsellor. Please seek
professional help if you are struggling.
I am writing to you today about healing and forgiveness. I’m not perfect, but I do consider myself a kind
person. I know people are doing the best they can based on their life experiences, and I do respect where
people are at. I generally try to stay out of other people’s business. Over the years, certain things have been
said and done to me that have and still do hurt like heck. I work hard on staying positive but in all honesty,
the pain caused by mean things other people have sent my way has kind of built up inside. As much as I
try, it won’t seem to go away. How do I heal this ache inside my body? - Hurts Like Heck
Every person I have ever met goes through life leaving footprints in the places they stood and marks in
the people they touched, and we all want to believe that those marks are always good, that when people
remember us there will be a smile on their faces. . . but that’s not always the case; meaning to or not, we
all have caused hurt to others, we have used words as knives and put our needs before someone else’s. We
justify our actions with claims of anger or ignorance, or with my personal favorite line: “He (or she) hurt
me first.” But the truth is we know we just left a mark of pain on someone else’s life.
Maybe you never got the apology you needed from those who hurt you, and maybe you never apologized
to someone you hurt, but make no mistake, we all live knowing that our paths are not made of only
“good” marks and “positive” footprints.
And that sucks, but that is also how we grow: we become better by making mistakes, and we gain peace
by realizing that some of the marks that we so painfully bear, are just someone else’s mistakes from a time
where they needed to grow.
Maybe it hurts like heck because you are holding on to the wounds tightly as if they are a reflection of you
and not of the people making the mark.
You are welcome to your anger and to feel hurt but I’m sorry to say I still don’t know of an over-thecounter
medication to heal the pain that we store in our hearts throughout our lifetime, so I can’t prescribe
anything for it. But maybe real forgiveness and healing begin with realizing there is nothing to
forgive, we are all just people making mistakes and hoping those mistakes don’t define who we are.
Winter northeasterlies blow down the mountains of the
mainland coast and blast across Hecate Strait. They are
the coldest. We don’t get them every year but when we
do, the easterly snap quite chills the blood. Winds from
the east quadrant are often called ‘lazy winds’ – they go
through rather than around you.
However, our prevailing winter winds are generally mild
south-easterlies. They develop below the Hawaiian Islands
and make their way towards Haida Gwaii. They can build
in strength when they meet systems from the Asiatic west
and from the very narrow northern Bering Strait. They all
revolve out in the deeps and create a perfect storm. Ships
sink, birds are blown all over the place and eventually,
trees here are blown down when the storms land.
The closer together the atmospheric pressure systems are,
the stormier it’s going to be. Low pressures often come in
from the ocean to meet high pressures from the land. The
systems meet somewhere in the upper atmosphere and
a mighty mix ensues. A kind of chaos occurs. But it’s not
chaos. There is sense to it. After the summer’s heat, the
earth’s mass gets cooler and winds gather strength from the
warm prairies and hurtle towards the mountains. These
anabatic winds rise up and over the mountains, then, as
katabatic winds, rush down the other side. These are the
northeast winds that rip, non-stop, across Hecate Strait.
The weather affects the world and everything in it.
Shearwaters are particularly vulnerable to storms. Those
dark, gull-sized birds nest in Australia, then criss-cross the
65,000 kilometres on their errant journey. They shear over
the waves on haidaheritagecentre.com
their way to their summer grounds in Hecate
Strait and Dixon Entrance although they are a rare winter
visitor and only appear when it’s too stormy ‘out there’.
Our bodies are also affected by the weather. As the
atmospheric pressure rises and falls, the pressure exerted
against the fluids and gases within us also rises and falls.
We can get headaches and joint pains. In fact, the weather’s
impact on our system is so varied that there’s a whole
scientific study devoted to it called ‘biometeorology.’ So we
have good reason to be a little spooked by winter weather.
It affects us, mentally and physically.
One winter, a southeasterly wind hit Hecate Strait with
such ferocity that the old, sea-worthy ferry, the Queen of
Prince Rupert--with one engine down and one stabilizer
out of service--almost rolled when crossing the bar at Lawn
Point. We were on board. Waves crashed against the cafe
windows and almost everyone was seasick. We landed in
HlGaagilda Skidegate around midnight, but the storm
continued to rise. On the homeward drive to Masset, trees
fell on the highway behind us, ducks landed in front of
us thinking they were on water and the house roof blew
off and landed in the neighbour’s yard across the street.
The ship’s captain left the ship forever to work the calmer
south coast waters. Yes, storms here are not to be ignored.
Next-Gen Business Ownership
Investing in Home
By Shellene Patience | Photos by (unless otherwise noted) Jason Shafto/Full Moon Photo
This article is exciting for me as it is the first of 120 issues
of the HGT Magazine that we have done a cover/feature
on a business from Wáan Kún/Gamadiis Port Clements.
It’s also big news for Port: there’s a new local entrepreneur
and a reinvigorated pub to celebrate!
When you refashion a local landmark, people are bound
to ask: will this new gathering spot reflect and serve the
community as well as the old one did? So far, the consensus
is a resounding “Heck yeah.”
Enter, owner/operator, Charleen “Bean” O’Brien, who grew
up in Port Clements and her new business, the Axe and
Anchor Pub. Whilst giving me a royal tour of the fruits of
eighteen months of challenging and arduous renovations,
Charleen tells me, “People have been asking me for years,
‘Why don’t you buy the pub?’”
In truth Charleen never had any intention of purchasing
the pub but in late 2020, “A rumour was circulating,” Charleen
divulges, “that someone was looking to purchase the
waterfront property that the Yakoun River Inn was sitting
on, tearing it down and building a house. So, we had an
emergency family meeting and we hashed it out for hours.
We decided we could not let that happen – and so, here I
am, a pub owner.”
Back in 1979, it was the Decock family who originally built
the Yakoun River Inn or “Yak” as it was fondly called. For
many decades, people from all over Haida Gwaii enjoyed
the Yak as a good times get-together spot. When asked
for her thoughts about the new pub, Anne Decock shares,
“Our families have known each other for over forty years.
It’s great that Beanie is carrying on the pub business as her
own. The renovations are beautiful and it’s so wonderful
to sell to a local.”
The name for the Axe & Anchor came about as an homage
to the industries that this town was built on. “My parents
companies has been operating and employing people for 50
years,” explains Charleen. “My Mom and Dad have worked
hard from the ages of 14 & 15 years old and this project is
definitely a tribute to them. My brother has also worked
in the industry since he was a teenager. We are very proud
to revitalize this building and offer up a spot for all island
peoples to come together with each other.”
Fun fact: at the age of fourteen, Charleen’s first job was
working as the Yak’s pizza chef. “Back in those days (the
1980s),” she reminisces, “there were often lineups out the
door!”
Now 49, Charleen has been cooking for over 26 years. A
classically trained chef, she has worked as a professional
cook in several high-end restaurants and catered events of
all sizes. Having lived off-island for a while, Charleen came
back to Haida Gwaii when her children were little as she
loves the quality of life and the people here. “I don’t miss city
living. I’m aware of how special where we live is. I wanted
my kids to grow up in a small and safe community. Being
a single mother, the most important thing for me will be
finding a balance between running the pub and family life.
Two very important influences in her life are Charleen’s
mom, Gloria, who has always been a fantastic hostess and
cook, and her late granny Lil who raised nine children. “Lil
was an excellent cook. She prepared food from her heart –
no recipes - and that is a big part of who I am.”
The Axe & Anchor’s menu will include classic pub fare
such as nachos, chicken wings, burgers etc., combined
with modern gastro pub food. Locally sourced seafood will
be offered whenever possible along with comfort foods,
international dishes, gluten-free and plant-based options
- all handmade. Patrons can also look forward to ongoing
specials and theme nights.Take-out and off-sales will also
be offered, and a designated driver’s service is in the works.
Axe and Anchor Pub Manager, Charleen’s Auntie Diana
shares when I ask her for her thoughts, “I look forward to
how this will help bolster the quality of life and economy of
Port. This place has historically been a mid-island gathering
point. Smiling faces and fun are long overdue - things we
could all use a bit more of.”
“We are excited to serve folks from all over Haida Gwaii,”
Charleen adds, “and I am especially proud that it’s here in
and for Port Clements.”
Visitors to the Axe & Anchor will be in for a treat. “I’ve
tried to recreate the kind of place I enjoy when I go to the
city,” says Charleen. “I wanted it to be a mix of masculine
and feminine. Modern but with a nod to the old pub feel.
It was important to me that it feel warm and inviting.”
The elder/wheelchair friendly entrance is punctuated by two
large and beautifully ornate hemlock doors. Once inside
there sits Port’s very first ever ATM! Across from it, above
a small seating area hangs the Yak’s steer horns that once
hung over the fireplace. Talk about nostalgia!
When you step through the foyer into the open-concept pub
“We’re going to do what we do best.
We’re going to bring on the fun! Lighten
up and have a blast. Fun events.
Fun meals.” – Charleen O’Brien
area, one can’t help but say wow. From every 60-plus seat
in the house, the new, floor to ceiling windows and glass
paneled deck railings facilitate a breathtaking view of both
the Masset Inlet and the sunset-famous mountain ranges.
There are four 72-inch flat screen TVs that will broadcast
a host of live sporting events and a 16-foot-long quartz
countertop bar offering five different beers and cider on
tap, along with a selection of fine wines. Fun events to come
include live music, karaoke, sporting events and music trivia,
etc. There is also full-service BC Lotto and Pull Tabs. There
PC | Charleen O’Brien
is a raised seating section by the “Antique Wood” Prima
Stone fireplace that doubles as a stage for live entertainment,
a conference room available for private events and three,
stylish and inviting half-circle, six-person booths.
And then there’s the 1600 square foot patio where 40-
plus guests can sit and enjoy an uninterrupted view of the
Rainbow Wharf and the sea. O’Brien & Fuerst Logging’s
locally harvested red and yellow cedar was used to make
the deck, there’s an outdoor grilling area, streetlamp-style
patio heaters and even some lounge-style seating. It’s got
sunny day fun times written all over it… heck, even if it’s
raining, there are some places to enjoy a meal under the
area that is covered.
New for this venue: until 10pm, children are welcome when
accompanied by an adult and the entire premises are served
by a state-of-the-art security system.
The Axe and Anchor employs a full crew of bartenders,
servers, and kitchen staff. Looking forward to providing
jobs for locals, Charleen is especially excited to mentor
some of Haida Gwaii’s young people.
I’ve been in the food industry for over 25 years.” Charleen
concludes. “I want to offer people high quality, approachable
food and create a fun environment where people want to
go out and enjoy themselves!
For hours, events and menu, check out the Axe and Anchor Facebook
or Instagram pages. Have an event you would like to celebrate?
Game Show Family Bonding
The Washingtons on “Feud”
By Claude Adams | Photos courtesy of CBC
When Derek Washington heard that the Canadian version
of the popular game show Family Feud was looking for
indigenous competitors, his first thought was: What a great
opportunity for a family reunion!
Derek lives in Gaw Tlagée Old Massett, where he works
as water operator for the village. Two of his sisters and his
dad live in Ontario and they’ve only gotten together twice
before. Here was a rare chance to meet for a Family Feud
Canada taping in Toronto, all expenses paid. To have what
Derek called “our 15 minutes of fame.” And possibly win
thousands of dollars in prize money.
So this past summer, they applied, and they were selected
for a Zoom audition. They were asked to introduce
themselves in a vivid fashion, so they decided to fugue on
the letter “W” for Washington. Heather Roberts, the team
leader, was the “wild” one, Derek was the “wacky” brother,
Melissa was “wonderful,” Neena Hart was “whimsical,” and
dad Arthur was the “wise” backbone of the team.
Derek designed T-shirts for the team emblazoned with
black tape in the form of a giant “W” and they shouted
together: “We’re the Washingtons and we’re here to win!”
Naturally, they aced the audition, and they were invited
to Toronto. There, show producers primed them for the
taping. Show lots of enthusiasm. Lots of smiling and conviviality
and high fives. Don’t boo the opposing family but
do cross your arms in an X when it’s their turn to guess.
Clap a lot. Always be positive. Said Derek: “The producers
really work with you, they want the family to look their
best, so they hype you up.”
In the taping before a studio audience, Team Washington
exceeded expectations.
Host Gerry Dee: “What was it like, Neena, growing up on
Haida Gwaii?”
Neena: “It was amazing. Derek and I were raised
there as free-range kids and our parents didn’t
know where we were. We didn’t have to be afraid
of anything but bears.”
But it was dad Arthur who had the show’s Golden
Moment.
Gerry: “We surveyed a hundred Canadians, the
top eight answers on the board. Name something
you might put on if you know you are going to run
into your ex.”
Arthur: “My running shoes!”
Gerry: “This is Season 4. That might be the funniest
answer . . . that is a great answer.”
The Washingtons just missed out in the $10,000
round but won $900 in prize money and the right
to return for a subsequent game against another family,
which they lost. Still, Derek called it a “win-win” experience.
And he encouraged all families to try it.
The two episodes can be seen on CBC’s digital streaming
service, CBC Gem, at gem.cbc.ca/media/family-feud-canada/s04e13
Tis' the Season to
A Day in the Life
Michl Koenig – Operatic Pizzaman
By Claude Adams
For exactly half his life, Michael Koenig’s robust rich tenor filled some of the most famous
concert halls in the world. But that ended suddenly for Michael, known to friends and
family as Michl. The Covid epidemic changed everything.
Opera houses from Milan to Tokyo shut their doors, and Michl’s artistic life came to an
abrupt end. He subsequently lost nearly three years of income, and at age 52 he faced a
crushing dilemma: how to sustain a family, and a home on Sangan Drive near Masset.
He sank into depression: “I found myself sitting out there staring at the rain not knowing
what to do. What’s going on? It really does mess with one’s brain. . . But I snapped out of
that with the help of family and neighbours, and I re-invented myself.”
Re-invention came with a variety of jobs: manning a landing craft for Highlander Marine
Services in Daajing Giids, helping with a towing service in Wáan Kún Port Clements, and
even doing some search and rescue work.
“It was a huge transition,” he says. But the oddest job appealed to the second love of his
life besides singing: cooking. Michl built himself a wood-burning pizza oven on an old
boat trailer, and he made the switch from Puccini to pepperoni.
Every Friday, when he’s not doing
his marine work, Michl mixes his
pizza dough, fires up his oven,
sets out his sign on Tow Hill Road
and posts on his Facebook page.
He sells a 12-inch pizza for $20.
The most popular is an Alsatian
pizza known as a tarte flambé—a
yeast dough, sour cream, bacon
bits, chives, basil, cracked pepper.
“You need a flame constantly
rolling around to make it crispy,”
he says. The dough is brushed
before and after the baking with
garlic and olive oil “so it’s nice
and shiny, and you get this smell
of basil when you open the box,
wow, that’s what I like!”
rural life. Out of bed before sunrise, coffee, going online to read international newspapers,
caring for six geese and 16 ducks, seeing to his new greenhouse, sometimes fishing for
his family and walking his dog.
Michl still plans to sing occasionally
from year to year but nowhere near
his hectic pace of times past when he
was on the road for six months of the
year. He says the operatic life is not as
professionally managed as it once was,
and the constant travel was “stealing
my lifetime, and that’s where I draw the
line.”
He’s thinking of expanding his pizza
business to two nights a week, and
also hopes to cater home dinners on
demand. Michl says he can put together
a seven-course meal, with starters and
dessert. His limit is 18 diners. “I can
cook anything,” he says, with all the
immodesty of a masterful chef.
But for the moment, his focus is on
making the most adventuresome pizza
on Haida Gwaii.
Michl can be reached at 250-626-7188
and on his Facebook page.
Chief Gaahlaay’s Gina Guu ‘Waa
Memorial Pole Raising
Article and photos by Taawa K’awas Roberta Aiken
and ribbons paying tribute to the National Day for Truth
and Reconciliation.
Two days later a pod of killer whales was sighted in the
bay at Xaayna for hours. It was said the ancestors were
celebrating.
The next day approximately 750 people attended the
potlatch where, according to tradition, the host clan feeds
the other and pays them in various ways for bearing witness.
Food was served up, there was dancing, clan members were
given names and there was so, so much more.
Recently the Ts’aahl Kayahl ‘Laanas clan raised a pole
in memory of Chief Gaahlaay, the late Watson Pryce, at
Xaayna Maude Island. The pole was the work of two Master
Carvers, brothers Jaalen and Gwaai Edenshaw who are of
the Ts’aahl clan. They were assisted by apprentice Cooper
Wilson.
Usually, it’s someone from the opposite clan who carves
this type of pole, so in honoring that tradition, the Edenshaw
brothers had the Eagle at the top of the pole carved
by Tyler York of the Skedans Raven Clan. The carving of
the 45-foot pole was completed over nine months.
Watson, the first figure, appears in the belly of the beaver;
then Kaagwaay appears with frogs peeking out. The six
rings are for each of the potlatches that Watson hosted.
Gwaai told me: “Well, it felt so good to do something for
Watson; it’s something he wanted to do for a long time,
and we are pleased to be able to pull it off. Gaahlaay was
a great man and deserved to have a memorial pole. It felt
good to set that right.
“The location was scary,” Gwaai continues, “since the logistics
were challenging but happily people put their heads
down to make it all happen. Shawn Peacock was instrumental
in helping to get this pole moved along with Rollie
putting it into place.”
In planning, the clan was unsure of the numbers that would
make the trek across the inlet. However there was a total
of 400 orange ribbons made to honour the children who
were taken away to Residential schools and when the day
came there was an offical count that exceeded 607 people
who stepped ashore. It was a beautiful sea of orange shirts
The Yippieneck’s Creed
Intermittent Fasting 101
I’m often asked to explain how I succeed in my practice
of fasting. The trick, I say, is to start slow by cleaning up
the diet and ridding oneself of the UPF’s (ultra-processed
foods), sugar and carbs.
Once you’ve gotten away from all the junk foods, then look
at the drinks you are reaching for. There really are only a
few healthy choices: water as pure as you can access, tea,
coffee and good easy-to-make kombucha (fermented tea.)
The tea and coffee should not have any cream or sugar
added. What I do is froth butter and coconut oil in to give
a rich taste that satiates. It’s known as a bulletproof coffee,
developed by David Asprey who derived it from Tibetan
yak-butter tea. I have just read four of his books and one
of the best is “Fast This Way”. It gives a balanced insightful
look at the nuances and truths of many of the challenges,
dangers and benefits of the different approaches to fasting.
A word of caution: start slow with the fats to minimize
negative digestive reactions.
Truly, the bulletproof coffee (or tea with butter and coconut
oil) is an amazing way to start your day and get
past food cravings. It also helps
one get to the 18/6 intermittent
fasting/feeding regime, that is,
fasting for 18 hours followed by
eating within a six-hour window,
skipping breakfast. Key to success
is to get your body metabolically
balanced, reducing carb
intake which lowers the craving
to refeed.
Another key is not to snack on
foods between meals or late at
night. Snacking triggers the insulin
hormone which leads to
ploughing any weight loss back
on and that brings on “ghrelin”-
the hunger hormone. Then you’re
back into the vicious cycle of nonstop
feeding and all the negatives
that come with it. For myself, I
Article and By photos Gregory by Morris Gregory Morris
quite often push through to OMAD (one meal a day) by
keeping bulletproof coffee intake going up till 2pm (maximum
five cups, some being plain black or green tea),
drinking lots of water and just staying busy. One other
thing for breaking an extended fast is homemade veggie/
bone broth.
A final key to success is to allow yourself a level of flexibility.
Don’t be too rigid and repetitive in structure and be
ready to change up on days when it seems too challenging.
But always remember to stay committed to eating good
whole foods and reducing carbs. The results will be amazing:
greater clarity of mind, loss of aches and pains from
inflammation and a dramatic diminishing of the spare tire.
The science indicates that a wholesome diet and restricting
feeding windows and/or extended fasting have many
positive effects of reducing cardiovascular disease, reversing
obesity and diabetes, and improving cancer treatment
outcomes. The practice also prevents many of the modern
diet-borne diseases from ever becoming a threat in the
first place.
Travel Assistance Grant Gives
Financial Bump To Local Athlete
In September, Masset’s own Regina Williams
travelled down to sunny Victoria with winning
on her mind (and with a little help from the Gwaii
Trust Travel Assistance Grant).
The 55+ BC Games is an annual event held over
five days with sports ranging from slo-pitch and
pickleball to archery and tennis. Held in a different
community each year and supported by hundreds
of volunteers, it offers the opportunity to celebrate
sport and active living with other participants from
across the province.
This was Regina’s first time participating in the
games. “I qualified to play the previous year, which
was cancelled due to Covid. The atmosphere at the
games in Victoria was fantastic and so well organized,”
she explained.
While she competed in tennis at the games, it wasn’t
always her primary sport. Through correspondence she
shared more about her background and experience.
“The first racket sport I played was squash when I
moved to Haida Gwaii in 1999. Following the closure
of the Masset Rec Centre in 2008, I started playing
tennis and tried to play 2-3 times a week.
Third Place in ladies singles
Second place mixed doubles with partner Garry Otto
“Growing up, I watched as much Wimbledon as possible
and at that time imagined myself in the shoes of the
ball kids watching live! The reality of playing is so much
better years later!
“Playing singles was the big challenge for me; I enjoy
playing both singles and doubles, but mostly play
doubles. I was within reach of second place [in singles]
which I didn’t expect and so thrilled to come away
with the bronze. It was truly great to play with ladies
from all over BC in the same age category.
“My mixed doubles partner [Garry Otto of Masset]
and I played in a barn burner final, 2 hours of roller
coaster who will win! It all came down to 1 point,
and we came away with the silver! What a great final
match.
“The trip was a great experience, and I’m proud to say
that I received a silver medal in mixed doubles tennis
and a bronze in singles tennis. The atmosphere was
fantastic, and I look forward to competing next year
when the games are held at Abbotsford.”
Way to go, Regina. Congratulations on your win,
and best of luck next year!
How much is available?
Up to $250 is available per return trip for the Individual Travel Assistance Grant.
What can it be used for?
All Things Music
A Musical Family
This multi-generational band is just in its infancy. Formed
in the summer of 2022, Bloodline includes two brothers
and their sons. The Williams brothers Chris (guitar and
voice) and Gregory (multi-instrumental) and their sons
Jett (guitar) and Kyrin (drums) come from a very musical
family. Chris and Gregory were in a band called Kilsli
and their father, Ron “Wow” Williams, a local HlGaagilda
Skidegate resident, was a lead singer in rock and RnB bands.
Their mother was in a Ukrainian band and recorded songs
with her sisters. “We grew up with music”, says Chris, “Our
parents and other relatives (including Percy, Shelley and
Terry Williams) were a huge influence to us playing music
and contributed to countless music events on Haida Gwaii.”
The four of them started listening to the same types of
music – heavy metal and rock – and they all ended up on
“Being on stage with the three family
members has been a highlight out of
anything else I’ve ever done. Four days
later, I was still on stage in my mind.”
– Chris
the same page via different routes and timelines.
Bloodline mostly plays music that they have composed,
Chris is the main songwriter, while Gregory and Kyrin
dictate the rhythm of the song and have contributed a
few tunes as well. “We play folk/country rock. I have been
writing songs for about 20 years. We review the songs I’ve
written and come up with the music together,” says Chris.
By Jamie McDonald
“I’ve always read lots of books and see writing music as an
art form that speaks to me. When I write, the creativity just
flows though me, I don’t even have a choice, it comes about
almost a finished product. I’ll be going about my day, and
now. With Chris and his family living most of the year in
Vancouver, their project to record some of their original
Am I Old Yet?
Ideas on Aging Well
Having just celebrated another birthday I’m wondering where
I’d place myself on the age spectrum. Sure, I’ve been a senior for
a while but even those goal posts shifted depending on qualifiers
for senior discounts at age 55 or 60 or 65. I’m receiving a
pension. I have grey hair. I love afternoon naps. But am I old?
After reading articles and books on what it means to be wellaged,
to age well, here’s some of the information I’ve gathered.
Age bias, ageism, starts very young in our society. Point in
fact: after watching my 76- year-old friend swim laps in his
community pool, a child in beginners’ class looked quizzically
at him and quipped, “I didn’t know old people could swim.”
Because we are living longer and there is a Boomer biomass
currently creating what’s been called a Silver Tsunami, age
bias is finally being brought into awareness and challenged.
My post war generation is the healthiest in history and collectively
we are fueling the longevity economy by creating jobs
and supporting existing enterprises. We are staying employed
longer, generating tax revenue, continuing to earn and spend.
Sure, we may need help with chores we used to do, but paying
for those services helps to keep the community money
pool circulating. I discovered that soon the world’s most
advanced economies will revolve around the needs, wants
and whims of grandparents …something the media has yet
to twig onto. It appears seniors are the only natural resource
that is actually increasing!
I also discovered that chronological age is an increasingly
unreliable benchmark for pretty much anything about a
person. It has been medically proven that our organs age at
different rates depending on lifestyle and choices.
Also proven over many studies is the fact that a more positive
view of aging is a strong indicator of how I will age. A
positive attitude helps with better functional health, doing
better on memory tests, walking faster with better balance.
My reading led to some very encouraging facts about my generation.
It has been proven that older workers can learn new
skills, we are creative, we handle stress better than younger
people, show up to work, miss less work due to illness, and
we can still handle some physically demanding tasks as only
a few jobs today require physical labor. We are mostly happy
in our work and some of us are creating ‘Encore Careers’.
By Lin Armstrong
Also, it is statistically proven that we are definitely not taking
jobs away from younger people (we’re not competing for the
same jobs), are not draining health coffers, are not a drag on
the economy.
So, am I old? I know I’m not young but neither do I see myself
as old. Perhaps I’m age neutral, even age non-conforming,
which I’m told is a political act that undoes ‘otherness’ and
helps to dismantle the division supported by the media and
their sponsors regarding youth, which is to be held onto, and
older people who are mostly underrepresented or invisible.
I’m going to keep listening to the music of my generation,
dance as if no one is watching, see myself as a contributor to
my community and reframe growing old to aging well. I’ll
continue to see age as an asset.
One more thing, the ‘U Curve of Happiness’ is being revised
from pretty much a gradual satisfaction drop from age 40! to
reflect a new proven fact that happiness increases again as we
age into our 70’s and the happiest age is 82!
Cogitate on that!
Thrift Shop Society
A Shift at the Thrift
By Lin Armstrong
Maybe you are downsizing, possibly
moving, just gathering outgrown clothing
or finding household items you no
longer need. You may think of sending
all the gathered items to the thrift store
so they can be recycled or repurposed.
If your intention is to donate what you
have decided to let go, please consider
the following.
Established in 1968, the non-profit Daajing
Giids Thrift Shop’s (DGTS) purpose
is still to provide a community service
and to use the monies raised to support
island-wide non-profits and charities. The DGTS supports Christmas drives
for each of our island communities big or small, as well as school food
programs, the Masset Soup Kitchen, the Gwaii Animal Help Line, the Haida
Gwaii Society for Community Peace’s Transition House, the Haida Gwaii
Funeral Services Society, Haida Gwaii’s two food banks and more.
However, many donations are unable to be displayed. Those that are stained,
ripped, pilled, covered in pet hair, moldy, broken, chipped, parts that are
missing, broken zippers or only one of a pair are in the bag, must be thrown
out.
Now being the only thrift store on Graham Island, the volunteers regularly
go in to do a three-hour shift and find the floor behind the counter and
counter space loaded. DGTS volunteers then need to inspect every item to
see if it is in good-enough shape to be sold again. We want to emphasize
the importance of going through your donations before bringing them in
and making sure all parts are included, that all still work and that items,
especially clothing, are clean and only gently used.
The DGTS continues to sell full ‘t-shirt’ bags for $5 and a full green garbage
bag for $15!
If you would like to train as a volunteer, please call Joan at 250 559 4568.
Háw’aa for your continued support.
The World According To cArTer
Musings of a Five-Year-Old
Carter turned five in October. What a huge milestone!
In just the first few weeks away from me in kindergarten
he really blossomed into an independent little man. He is
making friends and is truly loving every part of school.
I am not at all surprised as he has been a social butterfly
from day one.
I woke up early in the morning thinking that the boys
would be sleeping. I was wrong. Carter was sitting in his
chair watching TV with a popsicle in his hand.
Mom: “Carter! Why are you eating a popsicle at 6am?”
Carter: “Because you told me that I could have one tomorrow,
it’s tomorrow now.”
C: “Why are those firing in the hole?”
Referring to the industrial sprinklers the farmers use in
their fields. He thought they looked like cannons!
C: “I don’t have any pockets, so I don’t have any money.”
M: “What are you going to be when you grow up?”
C: “A teenager.”
M: “No, I mean what are you going to do for work to pay
the bills when you’re an adult.”
C: “Oh! Hunting for deer, fishing, and working.”
C: “Mom, did you know that I
have a brother?”
M: “Yes I do know; I gave birth
to him.”
C: “Mom, can you get a girl? A
baby girl. But don’t tell Dad, he’ll
get angry.”
C: “Why are you sick?”
M: “Because you coughed in my
face and got me sick.”
C: “No Mom. You took it from
me. You took my cold right from
me.”
Article and Photos By Jasmine Beachy
“Don’t get me sick again Mom.”
M: “Don’t touch those orange and black caterpillars with
your bare skin, they’ll make you itchy.”
C: “The next time we are off island, can you get me caterpillar
gloves so I can hold them? They are going to be my pets.”
C: “My eye is shy this morning. Can you get me a wet
cloth to dab it?”
M: “It’s shy?”
C: “Yah, it doesn’t want to open.”
C: “I don’t want to eat it! It tastes like unicorns.”
Referring to a pink and green popsicle I gave him. Carter
has a dislike for the colour pink.
M: “What’s that smell? You tooted, didn’t you?”
C: “Nope. Maybe it was a spider. Spiders fart because they
poop Mom.”
I thought that Carter wouldn’t have as much to say to me
once attending school. I was wrong! I will say he’s a little
sassier now, so I’m sure that he won’t disappoint with his
musings for the next while anyways! If you have any funny
children’s stories to share, send them to Shellene at HG
Trader at info@haidagwaiitrader.com.
I coughed near Carter, and he
had the audacity to say to me,
A Naturalist’s Almanac
The Colours of Winter
Article and photos by Margo Hearne
A Belted Kingfisher darts into the water and returns with a
tiny fish. Harlequin Ducks ride the offshore waves as they
wait out the storm and Red Crossbills sweep from tree to
tree to nibble on spruce cones in the dead of winter.
There is nothing quite like the colours of birds, especially
when skies are dark and rain teems down. So why all the
grand colours? Blue Kingfishers dive into the blue, crossbills
hide in the cones. It’s about attraction, predation and
protection.
Harlequin Duck
When ducks ride the waves they can be seen
from underneath. Things can come up from
beneath and eat them but their white undersides
are difficult to see from below. When
they sit on top of the water things can dive
from the sky and eat them, but their reds and
blues shift and shimmer with the wavelets and
distort the eye.
Reds and greens are the colours of Greenwinged
Teals, those small dabbling ducks that
sit along the water’s edge in Delkatla all winter.
Up to 1,000 line the banks during low tide,
then rise as one when the powerful Peregrine
Falcon swoops in to pick the weak from the
flock. The falcon is doing a reconnaissance
stoop, to see if (a) there are actually any birds
there and (b) to find the weak link in the
feathery chain. If the swoop is silent and swift
enough, one bird will always rise straight up
into the predator’s talons.
The falcon is grey and white, with dark sideburns,
which both provides camouflage when
it hides in the trees and helps it fade it into
the grey sky when it flies. Life is colour and
paradoxically, death, and birds know it.
Colour is also about attracting a mate during
nesting season. In spring flocks of ducks separate
into pairs in order to do their private
thing in the backwoods; then, come winter,
their bright colours weaken and flocks gather
together for warmth and safety. Female birds
Red Crossbill feeding on a spruce cone
Green-winged Teal
are often described as ‘drab’ which is somewhat insulting;
it is, in fact, a survival strategy. Their subtle colouration
is less visible to aerial predators in their preferred nesting
habitat; teal nest in long grass near fresh-water ponds,
Harlequin Ducks by rushing rivers.
Birds, like us, need water and are always at or within reach
of it – especially Great Blue Herons. Who would have
thought, after watching a heron make its ungainly way
through the shallow waters of Masset Inlet, that it nests in
tall trees in closed forests. It’s an apparent contradiction.
In winter a heron might be seen hunched up like an old,
cold person roosting in a tree behind one of the island
communities before it flies out with a loud squawk and
lands back in the shallows. It pretends not to be there as
its colours meld with the water. It can stand motionless
for hours, an apparent safe haven for small fish until, with
a splash and a snap, the small fish is eaten. Tricksters all.
Predators and prey run many risks throughout their lifetime,
even the tiny Golden-crowned Kinglet, a large name
for a small bird. Kinglets live in forests and flit among the
branches in small flocks as they pick at insects and seeds.
They rarely come to feeders but can be seen throughout
the island all winter.
And, of course there is the beautiful American Robin that
Great blue Heron
American Robin in the cold
30 HG November / December 2022 31

feeds on red holly berries in the snow and delights photographers
looking for the perfect Christmas photograph.
More lovely still is the orange and black Varied Thrush,
the bird of northern forests that comes to feeders when
the snow flies.
Red birds eat red berries, Green and Red Teal eat intertidal
weeds and seeds, Red and Blue Harlequin Ducks forage for
fishes and falcons will fall for each and every one, including
the tiny white Sanderlings running along the edge of the
sea. Winter colours are everywhere and the ‘why’ of their
colours is only touched upon here, but for the moment we
can delight in what the world has to offer, including the tiny
Anna’s Hummingbird that might just stay for Christmas.
Peregrine Falcon
Light fades early in mid-winter; there’s not much time
for winged foragers to find food. Perching birds have
to see in order to eat. The northern hemisphere tips towards
the Winter Solstice and the nights get long and
food becomes scarce. Migratory birds leave to make
way for our resident winter populations before the big
chill arrives. While the ocean provides for many species,
including shorebirds scattered along the beach and
offshore birds in the open sea, small forest birds can
use our help. Bird feeding is not a recent phenomenon.
Humans and birds have lived together through the centuries
and, either by accident or design, we have always
fed them.
So what is the best way to feed birds? Keep it simple. A
roofed platform attached to an upright pole with room
to allow more than one bird at a time will work. Birds
are territorial and keep others, even members of their
own species, from feeding, but they can work that out
among themselves. It’s helpful to have something that will
keep rats, squirrels and raccoons from climbing on to the
feeder. Even a plastic ‘surgical collar’ used for dogs could
be a temporary fix.
Unless it’s exceptionally cold, try not to use suet bells or
squares; birds get it on their feet and spread it on their
feathers when grooming. They then lose their own natural
oils and can perish in the cold, wet weather.
Through the Eyes of a Senior
Rehab & the Long Road Back
A recap for this ongoing story: it began with a stroke that
hit me on June 6, 2021. I’m in a hospital bed in despair of
not ever walking again, not driving a car again, and possibly
not even able to exercise my well-honed drawing and
writing skills again.
I’m told I will attend rehab in Prince George, my best
chance for recovery.
June 20, 2021. I’m in Prince George Hospital. We sit or
recline behind closed windows. There are many Covid
patients here. The air conditioning is overworked and the
curtains are drawn against an unrelenting sun. We are
pushed outside in our wheelchairs for one hour a week
which is heaven. There is a map to direct us to therapy
sessions and exercises.
My three roommates are ninety or older. One is complaining
and feisty - I pick her for my pal and we eat dinner
together in the crowded dining room where we both detest
the food.
I work on leg lifts, walking between hand bars and stationary
bike sessions with my progress closely recorded
by my physiotherapist.
“It’s easy to feel victimized
when the doors are shut
and you’re not allowed
out… and you’re hundreds
of miles away from home.”
– Manzanita Snow
Memoir and Illustration by Manzanita Snow
I am advised, prodded
or praised according
to my performance. I
am told I will not leave
until I have passed all
expectations.
I am determined to get
out of here at all costs.
I relearn how to button
a shirt and use clothes pegs. I hold and squeeze balls
and plasticine to exercise wrists and fingers. My usually
strong right hand is weak so I must use my left. I cry with
happiness when I can finally write my name and complete
a childish drawing.
Staffers run ceaselessly with needles, drugs and water. One
woman is missing a leg. She is cheerful and dresses like a
model. I admire her greatly. One young man speeds crazily
up and down the halls in his wheelchair while mine moves
very slowly, making me groan.
But I do get better and one day I graduate to a walker on
wheels. I can go to the bathroom by myself, a huge privilege.
Six weeks go by and I demand release. However, they
don’t let me go until they are all assured of my safety and
support at home. They assumed my reasoning was shaky.
Suddenly I realized I had lost my control over my life. I
was shocked at how I had to relinquish power over most
personal decisions.
Talk about opening my eyes to how important it is to have
a Power of Attorney in place, which luckily I did. But it was
still up to the health care system to decide if I was allowed
to go home.
Once I passed the mental capacity tests, after 7 weeks, I
was finally released.
Next chapter: I get Septicemia and
end up back in the hospital.
Haida Gwaii Eats
Potato Bake
With the holiday season around the corner, what
better way to start preparing than by getting our
casserole game on! Potato casseroles were a favourite
of my family’s growing up and often our
Christmas dinner was accompanied by one. Better
yet, potatoes are a homegrown staple for many
folks here on Haida Gwaii and the Haida Potato
has been cultivated here for over two hundred
years.
This edition of Haida Gwaii Eats features a casserole
dish from our very own Sheri Disney, the
owner of Sheri’s Place* in Masset.
Article and photos by Kaila Radan
Sheri also has a cookbook entitled Masset Cooks,
which features a collection of local recipes. It can
be purchased for $25 at Charlisle Clothiers in Daajing Giids, Sitka Studios in Tll.aal Tlell, or Sheri’s Place itself. Perhaps
a holiday gift idea!
Potato Bake
Submitted by Sheri Disney
8 tbsp (1 stick) salted butter
4 cups, peeled, shredded, patted dry, potatoes
(Locally grown Russet best if possible)
1 medium onion, finely diced
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
2 cups chicken broth
1½ cups grated Monterey Jack cheese
½ cup grated sharp Cheddar
1 cup sour cream
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 cups kettle-cooked potato chips, smashed to tiny pieces
¼ cup grated Parmesan
1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease a 9” x 13” baking dish with 1 tbsp of the butter.
2. Heat a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat, then melt 6 tablespoons of the butter in it. Add the onions and
cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions start to soften, 3-4 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and
stir to incorporate. Cook for a minute or two. Whisk
in the milk, making sure it’s smooth. Add the broth
and whisk again. Bring the mixture to a simmer and
allow it to thicken, about 3 minutes. Add salt and
pepper. Turn off the heat and stir in the Monterey
Jack, sour cream and Cheddar. Add the potatoes and
mix everything together. Transfer the mixture to the
prepared baking dish.
3. Melt the remaining 1 tbsp butter in a small pan. Put
the potato chips and parmesan in a bowl. Pour in the
melted butter and toss to coat. Sprinkle the crumbs
over the top of the potatoes.
4. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes, then remove
the foil and continue baking until golden
brown on top and bubbling around the edges, about
15 minutes more. Let rest before serving.
A Journey to Joy
One Woman’s Christmas
I was asked recently about Christmas traditions. It started
a war within me. I searched my soul and came up empty.
I thought of my childhood. Big dinners, opening presents,
being able to come and go as I pleased.
There was always something missing, A grief
I couldn’t explain. My parents would often
ask what I wanted, and I couldn’t say. Joy was
unattainable at times.
I was profoundly sad. I was ten when I started
drinking. I’ve been sober now since 1988. But
still, in the intervening period, I’ve been going
through an existential crisis. I don’t think I
ever processed the events of the last few years.
There were personal things: the constant pain
of a dislocated shoulder, a missed counselling
appointment, a conference where I learned
some wicked truths about the indigenous
experience.
But the bombshell dropped on May 22, 2021—
the day we learned about the residential
school graves - and it continues to reverberate
with each mass grave site of those beautiful
lost babies. With each war cry for our missing
women, the boom is getting louder. My tears
are falling and I’m releasing the poisons I’ve
been ingesting in hopes of not making waves.
All this trauma must go somewhere. It shows
up in families that don’t speak to one another,
addictions that seem incurable, workplace
bullying, and my absolute favourite, humour.
In 2008 I was visiting The Mall of America in
Minnesota with a team of social workers after
being in a seminar for child welfare. Our table
was full of very loud laughter and teasing. At
one point another table with non-natives eyeballed
us, and one of the patrons said loudly,
“I’m happy to be American.” It was meant to
be insulting but we took it in stride.
Readers are cautioned that details in this story may be upsetting.
Please take care and reach out if necessary.
The other day I was mulling over all the stressors
that have plagued me and a song popped into my head:
“I Believe in You” by Don Williams. I started to cry. Some
of the lyrics hit hard. “Well, I don’t believe that heaven waits/
for only those who congregate/ I like to think of
God as love/ He’s down below and up above.” As
I listened, the frost on my faith began to thaw.
“I believe in love, I believe in music, I
believe in magic, I believe in you”
Watching Kihlyaadaa Christian White’s pole go
up this past summer I saw many tears from
everyone around. I saw that magic lives in our
hearts, where the ancestors live. I started to
see my strengths, despite the survivor guilt. I
wanted to hold that child I was and tell her, I
believe in you, and it wasn’t her fault she was
abused, and she deserves the world.
As I watched all the dancers at Tlaajang nang
kingaas Ben Davidson’s memorial, I looked
around and felt the presence of him and many
others who’ve moved to the spirit world. Music
is such a huge part of the Haida culture, so very
healing and meaningful in so many ways.
“I believe in old folks, I believe in children,
I believe in mom and dad”
At each dinner or feast I notice generations of
the same families serving, dancing their songs,
while learning their way of doing things, and
the process of Haida Law. It’s as fluid as the
blood that runs through our veins.
It’s a most profound experience to observe.
“I believe in babies”
Don’t hesitate to hold your babies and tell them
about where they come from. Take care of those
lost in the many colonial systems and silos.
Never let a day go by without saying I love you
and you matter.
Look in the mirror and see the champion
those children needed. Always remember the
thousands of babies who didn’t have a chance.
Meditate and let the spirits hear you yell, “I AM
STILL HERE; YOU DID NOT WIN.”
And this holiday season, enjoy no matter how
you celebrate. There is no wrong way.
Haida Gwaii Stargazers
By Monica Caulfield
Aries (Mar 20 – Apr 19) It’s a great time to deal with the intense issues
that have been holding you back, dearest Aries. Doing so will
put you in a unique position to find success in the most creative
avenues. Be sure to stay focused and speak your truth whenever
it’s required. Keywords: concentration, depth and emotion.
Taurus (Apr 20 – May 19) Your loved ones need your undivided
attention, dearest Taurus. How can you determine their varied
needs with what you require for yourself in order to stay in a
balanced state? You might consider having the tough talks to help
things run smooth again. It’s worth it in order to start fresh.
Keywords: alignment, honesty and diplomacy.
Gemini (May 20 – June 20) Freedom feels freer after you have done
the work up front, dearest Gemini. And you have landed in that
spot of picking up the pieces in order to fly high. Move toward
checking jobs off your list but don’t let life burden you with the
workload. Just go about your business and complete projects to
the best of your ability. Enjoy the added benefit of feeling good to
be organized. Keywords: skill, orderly and direction.
Cancer (June 21 – July 21) Dearest Cancer, creativity is the name
of the game. Whether that is actual art made, or whether it relates
to creative attitudes and ideas of improvement. What can you do,
think or be that is new to you or to the world? It’s okay to put your
oxygen mask on first. Trust the authorities on this.
Keywords: insight, ponder and delight.
Leo (July 22 – Aug 21) You’ve done the hard work of making your
house a home, dearest Leo, and now it’s time to enjoy it. Just like in
a move, you continue to unpack boxes and put things away. Now
it’s time to hang the pictures, unpack your treasures and thoughts
and enjoy where you are and where you have come from.
Keywords: chose, clarify and decipher.
Virgo (Aug 22 – Sept 21) Your loved ones are in your thoughts,
dearest Virgo. And opportunities are coming your way at an
alarming rate. I don’t mean to be melodramatic, but now is the
time to have your priorities in place. Because as opportunity
knocks, it is vital to be lightning bolt speed decisive, so you have
time to see the next great ball flying your way.
Keywords: anticipation, aim and find.
HOROSCOPES FOR NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2022
Libra (Sept 22 – Oct 21) You’re building the courage to star in your
own show, dearest Libra. Your typical behavior is to judge yourself
and compare yourself with others. Not so much now. You’ve built
the foundation of what you want in life and how you will get there.
Now, it’s just a matter of time before you run with it. This can feel
so free. Not allowing your judgment to take over and just experience
who you are and what you value is true freedom, you’ll see.
Keywords: grounded, persistent and flourish.
Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) Your mind is learning to process all that
is approaching, dearest Scorpio. But what is it that you see in the
distance? It is all the rewards of your recent intentions. If it looks
and feels appealing, continue to think, say and do you. If it’s not
your current desires, then it’s time to recreate who you are and
what you stand for. Keywords: the harvest, your aspirations and
goals.
Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 20) You are about to rise and shine, dearest
Sagittarius. To wake up because it’s a new day! week! month!
And year! But first you need to sit in the dark just a little bit more.
In order to regroup. And process the dark as well as the light. Then
you will be good and ready to take on the new opportunities that
your life has to offer up. Keywords: forethought, reflect and stargaze.
Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) You’re coming back into your own,
dearest Capricorn. To where things just make sense. Your perseverance
is astounding as always, but now you have a level of
creativity to add to your tools of the trade. Try not to overthink
issues and instead just ride the wave to the end. You’ll see that you
don’t have to control everything for it to just work out.
Keywords: steady, nourished and your values.
Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 18) You’re back in the habit of dreaming
of faraway lands, dearest Aquarius. And why not? You typically
gather a lot of positive resources by learning and living with cultures
different than your own. If it’s not convenient now for you to
travel, then buy a great book about the next place you want to see.
Or learn how to make the cuisine of that country. Do anything
where you can get a glimpse of who they are and what they value.
Keywords: engage, encounter and evolve.
Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 19) You are being asked to state your desires,
dearest Pisces. For someone like you who is sensitive to the feelings
of others, this may come as a challenge. You can now recognize
how other people manipulate to get what they want. Though
that is not entirely in your DNA, I would ask you to practice being
what you might consider as “selfish,” and others might consider as
just a bit assertive. You deserve to have your way on occasion, so
take it. Keywords: psychoanalyze, passionate purpose and shine.
Ernst (Ernie) Sergej
We regret to announce the passing
of Ernie on August 21, 2022. Born
in Stockholm, Sweden, Ernie
immigrated to Canada with his
family in June 1949. The family
homesteaded and settled in
Valemount, BC.
Ernie met and married his wife
Carrol in Dawson Creek, and
together they raised 4 daughters.
Ernie worked many jobs on oilrigs
and in the logging industry, welding,
truck driving, being a mechanic and
building roads from the interior to
northern British Columbia. He was
also a forest ranger and owned a
service station.
Niord Widell
March 26, 1936 – August 21, 2022
Ernie moved to Haida Gwaii (the
Queen Charlotte Islands) in the
late 80’s where he worked until he
retired. Ernie loved living on Haida
Gwaii (the Charlottes) and had many
great friendships there. He loved to
fish the ocean and rivers near Port
Clements. His other passions included flying and hunting. He took many hunting trips with
family and friends up the Stikine River and in the Dease Lake area.
Dynamite wouldn’t have made him leave Port Clements, but after suffering a stroke he moved
to Vancouver Island, and finally Calgary to be closer to family. He enjoyed living in Calgary,
made new friendships (especially Scotty and Leon) and got to know his great grandchildren,
which brought him much joy.
Ernie was predeceased by his wife Carrol, daughter Wendy, and sister Elaine. He is survived
by his daughters Tony, Suzan (Karl), Carla (Harry), son-in-law Mike, sisters Rigmor, Marie,
Cathy (Bob), Ursula, brother Michael, 9 grandchildren (Tyrel, Brent, Jamey, Jordan, Carrol,
Christopher, Matthew, Marcus, Melanie) and 7 great grandchildren (Mackenzie, Maximus,
Adena, Tristan, Jaydah, Alexis and Danica).
Share condolences and memories of Ernie through his obituary at www.choicememorial.com.
The tide height in Haida Gwaii varies by up to 24 feet
(more than 7 meters)! The big tides (higher highs and
lower lows) happen every 2 weeks around the full and new
moons. Knowing the tides is important for exploring tide
pools, harvesting intertidal food, fishing, navigation, and
tidal currents. So before you head out, be sure to check
the date, time, and tide height, and adjust the time for
your specific location around Haida Gwaii.
