4 Facts & Figures
International tourism continues to grow
According to the latest issue of the World
Tourism Barometer from UNWTO – the United
Nations agency responsible for the promotion
of responsible, sustainable and universally
accessible tourism – the number of international
tourist arrivals (overnight visitors)
increased 6 percent to 1.4 billion in 2018. This
puts the sector clearly above the 3.7% growth
registered in the global economy. The growth
trend in tourism is continuing, as expected. The
results are attributable to stronger economic
growth, more affordable air travel and greater
visa facilitation around the world. 1 “The growth
of tourism in recent years confirms that the
sector is today one of the most powerful
drivers of economic growth and development.
It is our responsibility to manage it in a sustainable
manner and translate this expansion into
real benefits for all countries, and particularly,
to all local communities, creating opportunities
for jobs and entrepreneurship and leaving no
one behind,” 2 said UNWTO Secretary-General
Zurab Pololikashvili. Doppelmayr’s emissionfree,
virtually soundless ropeways make an
important contribution to environmentally friendly
mobility and therefore to sustainable and barrier-
free tourism, both in natural settings and in
urban areas.
The biggest Doppelmayr plant in figures
The Hohe Brücke plant in Wolfurt is the
Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group’s biggest production
facility and its competence center for
continuous-movement ropeways. It is here that
a wide range of steel parts are manufactured,
such as bullwheels, support structures and
parts for sheave assemblies and grips, which
are destined for ropeways around the entire
globe. Go to page 26 for a glance behind the
scenes; an initial overview of the plant’s
dimensions is given here.
