GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Colleagues and Friends:
Welcome to the 116th Annual Maryland Nurses Association (MNA) Convention.
MNA is pleased to return to a two day event as we celebrate nursing. This
year’s theme, Healthy Nurse, Health Maryland, not only follows the American
Nurses Association’s lead, but brings to light the need for all of us to focus on
our own physical, mental, and spiritual health. In the past year, MNA districts
and members have provided many opportunities for education on the issue of
self-help and resilience, and our joint collaborative with the Maryland Hospital
Association continues to strive for a safer, healthier workplace for all nurses.
The convention is the highlight of the year for MNA. The event provides a venue not only for
learning, but for networking, camaraderie, and fun. It is also a time to summarize the amazing work
of many volunteers that make our association great. Please take time to review this convention
yearbook and read about the many ways that MNA has touched nurses and improved the outcomes
of those that we serve. You are welcome to attend the annual membership meeting on Friday,
immediately following the convention. At this meeting, we will welcome the new officers and our
new President, Dr. Charlotte Wood. As part of your day, please take time to visit our many vendors,
as they bring helpful information and vital support to the convention. I hope that our location here at
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor meets your needs. MNA works for you, and we are pleased to announce
that the 117th Convention will take place in beautiful Ocean City on October 1st and 2nd, 2020.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of MNA’s Convention Committee
for organizing this event. Committee Chairs Barbara Biedrzycki and Beverly Lang have worked
tirelessly to make the convention a success. The MNA staff, including Executive Director Jennifer
Arigo, the former Director of Continuing Education Application Services Susan Prentice, and our
bookkeeper Marie Ciarpella, have all contributed their time and effort to ensure that things run
smoothly. I hope you will join me in thanking these team members for a job well done.
Finally, as I step down as President, I wish to thank every member of MNA. It has been a privilege
to represent Maryland nurses and I remain in awe of the work done by so many dedicated
professionals. Please take a moment today to recognize MNA officers and committee members
and chairs and consider becoming an active member. Share ways that MNA can help you in your
practice and provide feedback on the convention.
Thank you for attending and participating in this annual gathering of Maryland nurses.
Sincerely,
Mary Kay DeMarco, PhD, RN, CNE
President, Maryland Nurses Association
