GROWing 

a nation 

You may not be familiar with Candice 

Robbertze’s lovely face but chances 

are you’re familiar with her company, 

Calorie Conscious, as it distributes 

to more than 500 clients, including 

Checkers, SPAR and Food Lover’s 

Market. The company’s great-tasting 

and health-savvy products are a 

shopping cart staple but Robbertze 

wasn’t satisfied with commercial 

success – she wanted to take success 

to those who need it most too. The 

former Mrs SA finalist started the 

Candice Robbertze Foundation in 

2018 and one of the charity’s most 

recent projects is the GROW initiative. 

GROW stands for GRANT people at 

their RESIDENCE the OPPORTUNITY 

to WORK. 

To understand the name, one first 

needs to hear how this idea started. 

‘In 2017 I was a finalist in Mrs SA,’ 

Robbertze says. ‘Together with the 

Aganang Foundation, we did a food 

parcel activation. My dear friend 

Brenda Burges explained the need 

people have for fresh vegetables 

and she also explained that with her 

background, she’d be able to teach 

people to grow vegetables. As an 

entrepreneur my brain went into 

overdrive and the idea was born to 

utilise the offcuts from my factory and 

grow little plants from them. I called 

my veg supplier and asked for the 

pumpkin seeds and the offcuts of all 

the other veggies it was processing 

for customers.’ 

These seeds and seedlings then go to 

various communities where people 

are taught how to grow vegetables 

all year round. Robbertze’s company 

buys back some of the vegetables, 

but the surplus is sold by the newlytaught 

farmers/entrepreneurs in 

order to provide for themselves and 

their families, thus making the project 

fully sustainable. ‘To me, sustainability 

means the ability to support your

family and yourself, and at the same 

time to do less harm to the planet. We 

supply the skills, the knowledge and 

the start-up. I love to give the support 

and encouragement people need. 

When we started our first business, 

Calorie Conscious, there was nobody 

who could hold our hands to assist 

us when we failed at something, 

so I try to assist others wherever I 

can.’ Calorie Conscious specialises 

in super-healthy, gluten-free, lowcarb 

and Banting products, so the 

journey into vegetable-growing was 

quite a departure from the norm for 

Robbertze, who’s more comfortable in 

a boardroom than a pumpkin patch 

(but that doesn’t stop her rolling up 

her sleeves when necessary). Her 

business acumen is apparent in the 

zero-waste policy GROW follows. 

Whatever isn’t used to grow seedlings 

goes into the compost heap to 

nourish the vegetable gardens. 

Various other offcuts are donated 

to up-and-coming pig farmers to 

feed their livestock, which ensures 

no unnecessary waste is created. A 

team of six staff has supported more 

than 100 families with this initiative 

and a further 50 people are fed each 

day with what’s bought back from 

the farmers. This is in addition to the 

feeding scheme and soup kitchen 

Robbertze’s foundation runs, which 

ensures that organic vegetables 

form a central component of each 

meal provided. This is increasingly 

important in South Africa as our 

country has a problem with obesity, 

largely due to the affordability of 

higher calorie, unhealthy foods and 

the comparatively high cost of fresh 

(but perishable) fruit and vegetables. 

But this is just the first step. Robbertze 

has big plans for the GROW initiative. 

‘I’d like to take the GROW project all 

over South Africa, helping thousands 

if not millions of people,’ Robbertze 

says. ‘This project could assist some 

of our South African entrepreneurs to 

become self-sufficient. I really believe 

that if people feel worthy, they get 

up, dress up, show up and never give 

up. It only takes one opportunity, 

one person or one deal to change 

everything. I believe in empowering 

with passion and empowering 

the nation.’ 

So how can we get involved? 

Donations in the form of seeds, 

plants, equipment or money are all 

useful but it’s easy to see how simple 

the GROW initiative is. If you have 

a green thumb, you could start by 

growing your own vegetables and 

donating any surplus produce to a 

nearby charity. ‘The whole world is 

moving towards health. ‘Organic’ is a 

buzzword. Imagine receiving a box of 

organic veggies once a week, grown 

and nurtured by an entrepreneur 

somewhere in the middle of SA. 

Firstly, that entrepreneur would be 

doing a happy dance because they 

made a sale and can feed their family 

and grow their business. Secondly, 

you’re feeling healthier because you’re 

eating organic vegetables. And thirdly, 

you’re part of assisting our beautiful 

country and its people to decrease 

the unemployment rate and crime.’

‘I don’t want to be known as the girl 

who had cancer,’ Plaxedes Makura 

muses. Not that it’s likely. Being 

remembered as the girl who was twice 

nominated as one of the Top 50 Future 

Female Leaders (a global ranking, by 

the way) – sure. The girl who, at just 

37, heads a team of 20 people at an 

international law firm – definitely. The 

girl who turned her hand to fundraising, 

and successfully changed 

someone’s life because she felt she had 

a responsibility – yup. It’s only this last 

accomplishment – a rather outstanding 

one – that focuses attention on an 

even greater achievement: Choosing to 

fight against a disease that, just like the 

trainers she takes on in the boxing ring 

(her favourite hobby), insisted on going 

round after round. 

Plax’s journey with cancer started in 

May last year, when she noticed a 

lump above her left breast. With no 

family history of the disease and no 

reason to think she was anything but 

perfectly healthy (having recently 

started her boxing regime, she was 

feeling superfit), she ignored it. Even so, 

she couldn’t silence the nagging fear 

that something was wrong, so a few 

weeks later, she found herself tearing 

up while telling her friend, Justine, of 

her discovery. 

Coincidentally, Plax had a gynae 

appointment the following week. She 

was tremendously relieved when the 

doctor told her everything looked 

fine, despite the lump. Then the gynae 

suggested that, as she’s a worrier, she 

might as well have further tests done – 

after all, she was already at the hospital. 

A mammogram and sonar were both 

clear, but the radiologist recommended 

a biopsy, just in case. Five days later, 

when Plax hadn’t heard from the 

doctor, she decided to check in. ‘He 

told me the results hadn’t yet been 

delivered and phoned the radiology 

department. He phoned back and 

asked if I’d like to come in – but I told 

him he should just tell me what he had 

to say. He wouldn’t have asked me to 

see him if the news was good.’ 

With her family scattered around the 

world, from Zimbabwe to the UK 

and Germany, Plax’s first move was to 

phone Justine, who left work to meet 

her and later accompanied her to 

her first appointment with a surgeon. 

‘Although I’d broken down when I first 

heard the news, I still couldn’t believe 

I had the disease until my surgeon 

gave me a book about surviving breast 

cancer. That’s when it became real.’

that we’ll be here 

tomorrow 

Plax had surgery to remove the 

lump, as well as her lymph nodes, 

as soon as possible, and embarked 

on a course of Herceptin (immunetargeted 

treatment) because her 

cancer diagnosis showed she was HER2 

positive. ‘I had a lot of ups and downs at 

the time,’ she recalls. 

‘My first thought was: I’m dying. I’d 

never been exposed to cancer before, 

so I didn’t know there are a host of 

treatments and options. After a while, I 

realised there are no guarantees in life, 

but you can at least try to fight.’ 

One of her greatest weapons in 

the fight was exercise. ‘People 

underestimate the power of 

endorphins,’ she says, noting that 

exercise – even if it was nothing 

more than a light weights session – 

helped to manage the side effects of 

chemotherapy. ‘Often, I faked feeling 

better than I really was, because I didn’t 

want the people around me to worry. 

At the same time, I was determined 

my life wasn’t going to degenerate 

into a pity party. I still went out with 

my friends, I still wore heels, I started 

wearing more make-up so I didn’t look 

sick when my hair and eyebrows fell 

out.’ 

Then came the hardest blow – during 

a routine check-up, Plax’s doctor 

found another lump. ‘I told my closest 

friends what had happened, then I 

switched off my phone and checked 

out. I couldn’t understand why this had 

happened – I was on chemo, 

for goodness’ sake! I also 

couldn’t fathom what the 

point was and why I should 

continue my fight.’ 

Ironically, that dark 

thought turned into a 

shining light. ‘I realised 

I didn’t want my fight 

to have been in vain. I wanted 

to be able to look back on this time 

and be able to say, “Oh, that’s why it 

happened,”– not just accept it as the 

most difficult period in my life to date.’ 

The idea for Pink Power was born 

out of this determination to create 

meaning from her experience, and 

from conversations she had with 

friends and her boxing trainers at EFC 

Gym Sandton. So the first Pink Power 

event came about – a fund-raising 

fitness event put together in just 

four weeks which successfully raised 

R46 200 for a fellow cancer patient. 

‘I was lucky – I had a good job and 

was on medical aid, yet there were 

still times when I battled financially. I 

wanted to be able to help someone 

who didn’t have those advantages –

Makura (or Plax, as she’s better known) shows there’s nothing more 

powerful than a reason to live 

not someone who could make a 

plan, but someone who was in real 

need.’ Her beneficiary was a woman 

who’d been forced to stop her 

hormone therapy early because she 

could no longer afford it, and who’d 

recently been diagnosed with spinal 

cancer. 

Plax says she cried when she read 

her beneficiary’s thank you, and 

was humbled by the thought that 

a team of people had brought 

about a change without waiting 

for a charity to take action. To her, it 

proved the power of possibility. 

Although Plax will be on hormone 

therapy for the next five years 

to balance the excess 

oestrogen levels cancer 

cells thrive on, her cancer 

is in remission and 

she’s setting her sights on 

raising even more funds through 

Pink Power – at least R100 000. 

Her determination is typical of her 

energy – she’s always asking, ‘What 

next?’ And what’s next is pretty 

big –why stop at an annual event, 

she asks, or one that’s limited to 

Johannesburg? 

The palpable energy that envelops 

Plax was undoubtedly honed 

during her fight with cancer: ‘My 

motto is, Dum spiro, spero (While I 

breathe, I hope). Too often we take 

things for granted, including the 

fact that we’ll be here tomorrow, 

and so will our loved ones. Or we 

stop ourselves doing something we 

want to do because we worry about 

what others will think. I don’t want 

to live like that. I want to look back 

and know I made the most of every 

moment.’

How to help 

Plax’s tips for supporting a friend with a 

cancer diagnosis: 

• It’s OK to be vulnerable – you can cry. 

After all, you love your friend, so this 

affects you, too. Don’t feel you need to 

apologise for being sad. 

• Give her the space to deal with 

her emotions instead of constantly 

reassuring her that everything will be 

all right. Let her be angry and sad when 

those feelings arise. 

• Let your actions speak for you – they 

mean so much more than words. 

• Keep her involved. Let her decide for 

herself if she isn’t up to going out – 

don’t make that choice for her.

shares the thrills of his exciting life 

and spills on insights from his career 

that spans radio and television 

He gets a thrill from the butterflies and highs when the 

producer counts down lights, camera, action. He loves 

the perks of the entertainment industry ... like freebies. 

And he values the need to stay humble. 

With a career spanning television, radio, modelling and 

acting, Clive Maistry surely needs little introduction. 

You’ll probably recall his voice from the weekend 

breakfast show on 5FM where he entertained alongside 

Elana Afrika and Mark Gillman, or from seeing him on 

SuperSport Blitz and guest appearances on Egoli – Place 

of Gold as an intern doctor. 

Most recently, SABC3’s lifestyle and entertainment show, 

Mela, welcomed Clive as its newest presenter and he’s 

also the male promo voice of Zee World on DStv. 

What makes the entertainment industry one you 

enjoy? 

I think what stands out the most for me is that no day 

is the same and everything could change in seconds – 

especially when it comes to live TV! I think I also get a kick 

out of the butterflies and highs I get from seconds before 

the producer counts me down and it’s lights, camera, 

action. Love that feeling! 

What does a typical day look like for you? 

My typical day, I assure you, is not one to envy. My alarm 

goes off at 4am as call time for my first studio gig of the 

day is at 5am. Then it’s a full day in studio with other 

related duties from voice-overs to checking graphics, 

getting approvals on content and seeing clients inbetween 

that. This, while fitting in my gym sessions and 

five meals followed by an evening HIIT session. It ends 

with a very long shower and meal prep for the next day. 

Is it an insane schedule? YES! Would I want to be doing 

anything else? HECK, NO! 

When did you first discover your passion for 

presenting and what was your first gig? 

It’s something I’ve always enjoyed! I used to perform for 

my family and they somehow let me ‘waste their time’ 

watching ‘Clive Live in Concert’ for an hour sometimes! 

The first actual gig I landed was on Egoli – Place of Gold. I 

played an intern alongside Paul Buckby’s character and I 

was blown away by just how much more goes on behind 

the scenes than you’d think!

Do you believe TV presenters need specific skills? 

I’d say a passion to communicate should be a given. 

One isn’t born with a ‘skill’ per se as that’s nurtured. But 

what I’d say you should already possess is a natural 

charm, a great personality and a killer smile to win over 

viewers! 

What important lesson have you learned since being 

in the entertainment industry? 

Always be humble and stay true to who you are as a 

person, because when those cameras and lights switch 

off, you have to face yourself in the mirror at the end of 

a long day. 

What are some of the positive perks of being in the 

entertainment industry? 

FREEBIES! Who doesn’t like free stuff? That, and meeting 

some of the most interesting people you could ever 

imagine having the opportunity of meeting! 

What are some of the challenges faced in the 

entertainment industry? 

The fact that anyone thinks they can be a presenter. 

Also, I’ve seen major productions skimp on budget 

and want someone who isn’t as experienced, due to 

costs. In seconds a production that took months of 

preparation can fall apart. 

If you could present alongside any celeb, who would 

it be and why? 

I’ll probably get sidelong looks for this, but I honestly 

think Khloé Kardashian would be a whole mood! I’ve 

watched her present on America’s Got Talent and she 

nailed it! I love her off-the-cuff approach and think it 

would be an amazing chemistry on-screen. 

How do you select the presenting jobs you get into? 

I’d say it all comes down to opportunity and the market 

the producers are aiming to promote the show to. 

Don’t get me wrong, every presenting gig does come 

with a plus, as it’s more to add to your CV. But I think 

one should know the market you’re being presented to 

and be selective and say ‘no’ if it’s not on-brand. 

Who do you respect most within the entertainment 

industry and why? 

I love the diversity of our industry as well as the 

teamwork within it. That’s something I can respect the 

most. A solid crew putting differences aside with the 

aim of creating an incredible production. It’s funny to 

watch but so satisfying to see everyone getting along 

like clockwork when the director calls ‘action’.

Women’s Race runner-up 

She’s an actress with dreams of having 

her name in lights ... and after being 

named a runner-up in the Face of the 

SPAR Women’s Race, she’s on her way. 

Holly Gxubane shares her positive 

outlook and why she’s a health ‘hunny’

From a small town in KwaZulu-Natal to the bright lights of 

Joburg, Holly Gxubane is fit, fabulous and a finalist in the Face of 

the SPAR Women’s Race. (She never imagined she’d be a runnerup 

in such a glamorous competition ... in fact, she’s never 

entered a race before!) 

‘It’s crazy to think I’ve not been part of any race because, well 

... I couldn’t afford to enter,’ explains Holly. Now, she’s proud to 

represent the SPAR Women’s Challenge Joburg on October 6. 

‘This is worth all the times I haven’t been able to enter the race.’ 

She’s come a long way since she first moved to Joburg. The 

aspiring actress recalls how she journeyed to the big city with 

a mere R50 in her pocket. With nowhere to go and no one she 

knew, Holly spent two long days at Park Station. But with just 

R12 left, she managed to secure a place to stay. ‘Ever since then, 

I’ve been working towards my career goals and running has 

helped me find balance while doing that.’ 

It’s no surprise her running shoes are the favourite items in 

her wardrobe. ‘They’re very special. They were among the first 

things I could afford to buy and they’re the first thing I spent 

more than R100 on! I use them in so many ways.’ 

She takes in every day like a breath of fresh air and has a specific 

morning routine that helps her get through the day. (Of course, 

it includes running!) ‘When I get up, I take 10 minutes for my 

spiritual enhancements and breathing exercises. Then I put on 

my jogging shoes and clothes, grab a bottle of water and I’m 

out on the road. When I return, I have a healthy breakfast and 

write down my goals for the day.’ 

The hard working, strong and independent 25-year-old believes 

hard work and a positive mindset can help you in the office and 

on the road. ‘When I’m running, I block out everything bad and 

focus on the good. Don’t look for the black dot on the white 

sheet – just see the light.’ 

The optimistic Holly had an extremely positive start in life and 

drew much inspiration from her parents, who were performers 

and magicians – she’d get a thrill from helping them. She was 

popular at school and, as the second-born, says she was always 

outspoken – a skill she’s now building into a career as an actress 

and voice-over artist. 

Holly’s also overcome some harsh adversity. When she was in 

her early teens, her world was rocked when her Dad was shot 

12 times. Her pregnant mum moved Holly and her six siblings. 

‘It was really tough. We went to a rural area. It was a whole 

new ball game from living in the suburbs and having running 

water to going down to the river to fetch water.’ She also found 

challenges at her new school. ‘I was mocked for a whole lot of 

things from the way I spoke to reading, because the kids in my 

area didn’t read and they still don’t.’ 

Although her classmates made fun of her acting aspirations, 

performing brought out the best in Holly. She followed her 

passion. 

One of her other aspirations was to run the SPAR Women’s 

Challenge Joburg, and, inspired by the women who took part 

in the Face of the SPAR Women’s Race last year, Holly decided to 

enter the competition. She says she ‘took a chance and entered 

and the rest is history. I’m here now.’

secret that we love to wine and dine (ahem, just look at these 

pages!), so when The ROCK Design Quarter invited us to its 

September First Thursday, we were game, of course! And 

now we’re officially sold ... who wouldn’t want to kick off the 

month by sitting back with a glass of something delicious 

in a beautiful setting with live music by local performers? 

Yep, it’s a totally desirable evening ... and here it is in a 

nutshell: As Matthew Gold got the evening started, so did 

we, with a tasty cocktail – there’s nothing like a good ol' 

fashioned bourbon with bitters, lime and orange zest! The 

vibe? Relaxed. The seating? Plenty of choice ... we opted to 

sit outside where all the action was at this contemporarydesigned 

casual dining spot. And the food? Moreish! The 

Mediterranean-inspired meals combine traditional and 

new combinations to excite your taste buds. You can 

order just about anything from the diverse menu, from 

something a little lighter – like the beef trinchado cooked 

in a scrumptious red wine sauce – or share a pizza with 

your mates. But the ribs are a serious drawcard. We tucked 

into some succulent pork cage ribs with sweet potato 

fries. And. They. Were. DE-LISH-OUS! Nothing like a good 

wine to complement your meal ... the wine list is extensive 

(there are a whopping 12 Sauvignon Blancs alone!). As we 

sat back sipping, the night rocked on with The Kiffness 

taking centre stage and we thought ... we’ll be back next 

month for sure! (And we highly recommend you go too.)

I scream. You scream. We 

seriously scream for a 

Pinotage ice cream recipe! 

A recipe for grown-ups – Pinotage ice 

cream! Who could possibly resist? 

125ml Pinotage (or other red wine); 7 

large egg yolks; 375ml full cream milk; 

375ml double thick cream (ordinary 

cream will work too); 180g castor 

sugar; 1 vanilla pod; (optional – 1 tsp 

pink food colouring if you’re not happy 

with the colour of your ice cream). 

Pour wine into egg yolks and whisk 

until combined. Place milk, cream and 

sugar in a pot over medium heat. DO 

NOT BOIL – you just want the sugar 

to melt. When melted, remove pot 

from heat. Cut vanilla pod lengthways, 

scrape out seeds and add to the hot 

milk/cream. Stir. Slowly pour the hot 

liquid into the wine/egg yolk mixture 

and stir until well combined. Strain 

through a sieve into a clean container. 

This is your ice cream (or custard). 

Place a piece of cling film right on the 

surface of the custard and leave to 

cool at room temperature. Once cool, 

place in the fridge and allow to rest for 

a minimum of 12 hours. When rested, 

pour into your ice cream making 

machine or start the manual churning 

process. Once churned sufficiently, 

allow ice cream to set for 6 hours in 

the freezer before serving. (Note: To 

churn ice cream manually, remove 

it from the freezer and whisk it for a 

few seconds every 20 minutes over 3 

hours, returning it to the freezer after 

each whisking.) Recipe from Lesego

chef is a mind-boggling leap – but it’s 

one Lesego Semenya has successfully 

negotiated as his cookbook, Dijo 

– My Food, My Journey, reveals. 

Lesego’s aim is to take the snobbery 

out of food and with simple, reliable 

recipes for bone broth, scones and 

good ol’ fish and chips, he’s spot 

on. He expands into making your 

own bread and pasta (gnocchi with 

Parmesan crème and wild mushrooms 

anyone?). By the time you reach his 

mouth-watering versions of springbok 

shank, lamb rack, quail, or bacon 

wrapped sole, you can’t wait to get

Oysters and champers to celebrate ... well, anything! 

An oyster, dressed simply with a classic shallot, white wine vinegar and white 

pepper dressing, with a glass of bubbly. Is there a better way to celebrate the 

warm weather? We think not. Which is why we’ll be skipping down to Shucked – 

An Oyster Bar in Craighall Park more than once this month. Fresh oysters flown 

in from Saldanha are shucked to order and served every which way ... from raw 

with the simplest dressing of salt and lemon to grilled with one of half-a-dozen 

dressings. For those – and we know there are many – who just can’t face an oyster, 

fret not ... there are other great gastro pub-type dishes. We’ve tried – and loved – 

the upmarket fish and chips (we’re talking kingklip with oversized chips and mushy 

peas). There are pies that change depending on what’s in season, and a really 

sensational rib-eye steak which comes with a rich, moreish marrowbone butter. 

Not a bubbly drinker? (We can’t imagine why not!) There’s an amazing cocktail

Tunzi, give the country 

a tour of her exquisite 

Sandton apartment, 

with all décor and

team, Joy and Garron 

Greenberg, of Mia Bella 

Interiors. 

‘We were approached 

by the Miss SA 

organisers to furnish 

the apartment for the 

2019 winner,’ 

Joy says. 

‘We had a meeting on site to see the 

unit and were blown away by the 

apartment and the incredible light, 

energy, space and views.’ 

Despite 30 years of industry 

experience, there was one significant 

challenge when it came to designing 

the apartment. ‘In normal interior 

decorating and design, one meets the 

client and gets to know their taste, 

style, personality, likes and dislikes. 

‘We usually meet with clients a few 

times before coming to a final decision 

about the look and feel they’d prefer. 

The challenge with the Miss SA project 

was not knowing any of this. We knew 

it would be for a beautiful young 

woman who would be the ‘people’s 

queen.’ But it would still be a while for 

the new Miss SA to be crowned and 

subsequently move into the Sandton 

apartment which will serve as her base 

during her reign. 

‘The apartment needed to have a 

feminine touch and have a friendly, 

warm and welcoming atmosphere.

lounge as it’s a beautiful open plan

Africa sports an extra 

special (and unusual) 

crown in her elegant new 

Sandton apartment 

area. The theme was an urban-modern 

one, using shades of saturated greys 

with a pop of yellow in accent chairs 

and decor. Throughout there are 

patterns, textures and tones which 

bring the design together. The chairs 

around the beautiful, natural reclaimed 

wooden dining room table are all a 

variety of greys and charcoals (the 

fabric and style of chairs differ, creating 

an interesting look). The embossed 

wallpaper has a geometric design. Every 

scatter cushion is made up in a totally 

different fabric with different designs, 

pulling all the colours together. 

‘There’s the most sensational patio 

with an uninterrupted view of the 

breath-taking Sandton skyline. Here we 

chose neutral colours with practical, 

weatherproof outdoor pieces where 

our Miss SA could put her feet up, drink 

a glass of wine or cup of coffee and 

relax. The bedroom has huge windows 

and wonderful natural light. As it was 

for Miss SA, we knew she’d need space 

to move around and get dressed up 

for all her appearances, so the key was 

not to clutter. The headboard was 

inspired knowing it would be a bed 

for a beautiful queen, so we designed 

it to look like a crown. The bedroom is 

one’s private space to relax, regroup, 

chill and unwind, so tranquillity is most 

important.’ 

The Greenberg’s ethos is to create 

beautiful, functional and meaningful 

spaces while conducting themselves 

with professionalism, commitment, 

organisation and passion for their 

work. While the curation of décor for 

Miss South Africa is very high profile, 

Mia Bella furnishes private homes, 

apartments, hotels, office blocks and 

corporate spaces, with no project 

being too big or too small to take on. 

Budgets and style can be adapted to 

the client’s preference and they can 

be as hands-on or hands-off as they 

please. 

‘If a budget is really tight, start with the 

rooms that will be most important to 

you,’ Joy suggests. 

‘A splash of fresh paint or an accent 

wall getting a vibrant wallpaper can 

make a huge difference, while not 

breaking the bank.’ 

Joy also urges us to look local 

while making décor decisions. 

‘It’s always best to work with local 

manufacturers. We believe in building 

relationships and partnerships with 

people and supporting our country.’ 

That said, don’t be afraid to get 

inspiration from overseas. ‘We travel 

to the international shows to bring 

back new trending concepts and 

the latest ideas. It’s important to stay 

ahead of the game and know what’s 

in and out of fashion in the furniture 

industry.’ 

While on the subject of what’s in 

fashion, Garron acknowledges the 

importance of green, sustainable 

living. ‘We used a variety of pieces of 

furniture and accessories in the Miss 

SA apartment made from reclaimed 

wood, plastic, bamboo, cork and 

coconut,’ Garron says. ‘Wherever we 

could, we tried to incorporate as much 

of this as possible.’

We’re planting ... 

regal pelargonium Novita for its 

knockout colours and neat, bushy 

growth. It looks good anywhere – in 

large containers, in the garden in full 

sun or semi-shade, even in coastal 

gardens. It doesn’t get leggy like older 

varieties used to do and is a great

Garden tasks for October 

• Plant summer colour. Annuals that 

grow quickly and easily from seed are 

alyssum, cosmos, lavatera, portulaca, 

California poppy, and nasturtium. They 

all do best in full sun. 

• Trim back invasive groundcovers to 

give other plants room to grow. 

• Renew containers. Replace the 

potting soil and fill with summer 

annuals, trailing groundcovers or 

grasses. 

• Fertilize perennials with Vigorosa or 

granular fertilizer 3:1:5 or 5:1:5, and 

annuals with a liquid fertilizer. Use 

either pink or blue hydrangea food for 

hydrangeas. 

• Water regularly and spread a layer of 

mulch over beds to conserve water 

and keep the roots cool. 

• Mow lawns at least once a week, 

but if it’s very hot and dry, mow less 

frequently and set blades higher.

are easy to grow in pots on the patio 

or on a sunny windowsill. Sweet 

Snack pot peppers produce loads of 

crunchy, delicious fruit, about 25 to 

30 fruits in two flushes. It’s a healthy

into salads, platters and stir-fries. 

The more you pick the better they 

produce. The plants are just as pretty 

and stay compact (50cm high). They 

just need regular watering, plant food
