Model Bus Federation Meeting:
(Once a month) 1pm – 4pm
Bridge of Weir Christmas Lights
Cllr James MacLaren
Don’t the dark evenings come suddenly!
If you are accustomed to going out
for a walk in the early evening, please
remember to wear bright clothing and
carry a torch to be seen by as much as
to see with. For dogs, you can get flashing collars
and this is a useful device particularly on the cycle
tracks after dark to warn approaching cyclists of
the danger. Please take care out there.
It’s the time of year for the leaves to fall from the
trees and no sooner has the road sweeper gone
by on our leafy streets than it looks like they
haven’t been for months. Pity the council does not
concentrate road sweeping in these areas just now.
When was the last time you saw your gully being
emptied? Many of them are full of silt. This is bad
news for many villages as flooding is a big issue in
many places. Council does not appear to be making
any extra effort at known flood risk spots.
Fly-tipping is a real scourge on our landscape and
the Council really need to get tougher on those
that commit these offences. It is unacceptable
that individuals and businesses have to clean up
this amount of rubbish and litter themselves every
week. The Council need to ensure that working
CCTV is used at known dumping sites as a matter
of urgency in order to deter would be fly-tippers.
Our countryside should not be a dumping ground
for waste and I am calling for officials will take
action on this immediately.
Many of you will know that I have been searching
for a suitable site for a men’s shed in Bridge of Weir.
I have now reached agreement with Ian Beaton that
a building could be situated within his coal yard.
The plans would be subject to planning permission
and of course will depend on a planning application
for housing here, but I welcome Ian Beaton’s
commitment and shows there is a real desire for a
men’s shed to be a reality in Bridge of Weir. A men’s
shed is a fantastic way of bringing men together
socially and boosting their confidence.
I recently attended an event at Gryffe Wraes Farm to
learn more about how farms can protect themselves
from being the victims of crime. Concerns around
scamming, protecting livestock, fly-tipping and
hazardous waste were all discussed. I am sure our
farmers who went along will have learned about
measures they can take to protect themselves from
being the victims of crime such as scamming and
theft of livestock.
Welcomes New Chair
The first section of the inaugural meeting of
the new Community Council was chaired by
the Renfrewshire Councils Community Council
Liaison Officer Anne Mc Naughton.
Anne opened the meeting with a general
introduction and announcement of the results
of the Election only 10 nomination papers were
submitted therefore all 10 were duly elected
unopposed. Anne called for nominations
for Office Bearers Community Councillors
were delighted local village activist Gordon
Anderson accepted the role of Chair after long
time Chair Sandy Clark had intimated he wished
to stand down. With Gordon’s enthusiasm at
the top of the helm the Community Council
will continue with its goals to provide a better
village environment for everyone.
Sandra Liddell continues with her role as
Secretary as does Treasurer Neil Ferguson,
Sharon Russell has been elevated to the
position of Minute Secretary.
Overall the election was a poor result for the
Community Council losing seven members,
mainly retirees and gaining only two.
As well as Gordon joining, we welcome wellknown
local business man Ian Beaton to our
ranks.
The meeting heard from Councillor MacLaren
that traffic calming measures will shortly
be upgraded at the Kilmacolm entrance to
the village and a new method of reporting
non collected household waste bins to be
introduced going digital.
The Community Council has called for a site
visit with Ken Gray StreetScene Manager at
Renfrewshire Council to view the open space
site on the corner of the Lintwhite / Main
Street junction, to identify what can be done
to improve the appearance.
Community Councillors are to meet soon to
finalise proposals for the Christmas Lights
switch on. The date this year is Thursday the
5th of December.
An application to Renfrewshire Councils Green
Space fund has been submitted to upgrade
play equipment at Lintwhite and Ranfurly
Parks.
The Community Council are to review its subcommittee’s
and membership.
The membership of the Community Council
for the new four year term is Gordon Anderson
Chair, Sandra Liddell Secretary, Neil Ferguson
Treasurer, Sharon Russell Minute Secretary and
members Ian Beaton, Sandy Clark, Andrew
Curley, Maureen McClements, Alannah Penney
and Neil Thomson.
The new traffic calming measures on Kilmacolm
Road are now in place including large 30mph
signage giving drivers no excuse to break the
law by speeding.
