What to do about ... Foil
From roasting tins to packing our sandwiches, a lot of us use
aluminium foil for many things – but should we? Aluminium is a
finite resource. As a mineral that is mined from the earth, it is a non
renewable resource and it is worth bearing in mind that, similarly
to its kitchen partner (in eco-crime) ‘cling film’, each stage of its
extraction and processing has an environmental impact. Therefore,
it may be an idea to investigate other eco-friendly alternatives.
(Go ahead and Google these: 1. The ‘Wrap-N-Mat’, 2. If You Care
Non-Stick Parchment Roasting Bags, DIY Beeswax Wraps and the
classic 70s style ‘Brick for Chicken’). There are many more great
ideas to be had if you start researching Zero Waste Household.
However many of us may still continue to use foil, but in order
to lessen the ‘green guilt’ it is important that we do recycle this
resource. First, give it a dunk in your washing water (rather than
running the tap) to remove crumbs and food residue. You can only
recycle foil if there is a large enough amount of it for the processing
machines to identify and separate it. So, secondly, save your foil
and when you have a ball the size of a tennis ball or bigger, then
put it in the recycling. As well as foil you can usually recycle these
other aluminium items too – drinks cans, wine screw tops, takeaway
containers and roasting trays. For more info on recycling in your
area check out www.recyclenow.com.
It is easy to become a bit despondent when trying to keep up with the
many, often conflicting, opinions on best ways to reduce our carbon
footprint, and at times eco-remorse can be a bit overwhelming,
but the impact on our environment cannot now
be ignored. With big businesses unwilling to
make significant changes, the change must
come from us as consumers to move as
much as we can towards zero waste in
our households.
Community Garden Receives
‘Outstanding’ Grade
This year, Lochwinnoch Community Garden received an ‘outstanding’
grade from ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ and ‘Keep Scotland Beautiful’
campaigns. A fantastic achievement.
The assessor concluded, “This clearly focused group have created
a truly sustainable garden in the grounds of Lochwinnoch Parish
Church as well as being an educational resource for the local
primary school. The group also are the local ‘Bloom’ organisers
with numerous planters throughout the village and horticultural
input into features such as the War Memorial’.
Tips for Bonfire Night
Always make your bonfire a good distance from the house, on soil
rather than grass and away from any overgrown area of the garden.
If your garden is small then best attend an organised bonfire. Keep
the fire well clear of fences and trees and always keep a bucket of
water handy just in case.
Never use accelerants on your fire. Adding fuel to the fire can take
it out of control far quicker than you may imagine. Don’t throw
anything in the fire other than wood or paper products.
And above all, PLEASE check that there is no wildlife making a wee
winter nest in amongst the wood and leaves!
Be safe and enjoy!
