Kilmacolm Tennis Club
A stunning day for the Kilmacolm Tennis Club Championships saw some very competitive
matches played in front of the club’s biggest ever crowd.
First up was the Gents Doubles with our youngest ever finalists Zander Davies, 15, and Ben
Wilson, 18, up against the holders - Ali Robertson and Graham Marr. Zander and Ben put up
a decent fight, before succumbing in two sets.
Ali Robertson was the holder of the Gents’ Singles title as well, and the final was a repeat
of last year’s epic against Roy Fraser. During a thrilling match, when a tie break seemed
inevitable, Ali managed to win it 7-5 and maintaining the same high intensity and quality of
tennis, he took the second set as well.
The Ladies Doubles final pitted Freda Robertson and club secretary Sian Nicol against a
pair of former champions from the ladies 1st team. An “A. Murray” coming back from injury
to win a title, is the stuff of Scottish tennis dreams. In fact both Ann Murray and Liz Moisin
were returning to competition this year after long lay-offs. The match ended in a two set
victory for Liz and Ann.
In the Super Senior Ladies Doubles competition, Sian Nicol and Rosemary Nott beat Pauline
Macklin and Heather Wylie in two sets. The Ladies singles Championship was awarded to
its youngest ever winner – the talented 13-year-old Eleanor Cochran.
There was a fitting finale to the day. Outgoing captain, Marion Wardell was paired with
men’s captain Roy Fraser. Up against them, Ali Robertson was paired with his significant
other, Kirsten Begg. In the end youth triumphed and after a cracking final set, Kirsten and
Ali were crowned Mixed Doubles Champions.
Congratulations are due to all the finalists – and their families! New members are invited to
take advantage of the reduced rate winter memberships available at £10 per month from
now till the end of March. Photo (l to r) Roy Fraser, Marian Wardell, Kirsten Begg and Ali Robertson
