Fairtrade Coffee Morning
We were delighted to welcome along our parents, families,
members of the community and Parishioners from St. Fillan’s and
Killelan Parish Church to our first ‘Fairtrade Coffee Morning’ of this
school session. The children in the Fairtrade Committee organised
the event and were on hand to welcome guests, serve tea, coffee
and cakes and they facilitated the highlight of the morning - the
Fairtrade raffle.
The children’s efforts were rewarded as they managed to raise £80
for Fairtrade and £83.57 for their chosen charity, which was St.
Vincent’s Hospice.
We would like to thank everyone who came along to support the
children, our school, and this worthwhile event.
Team Clean Up
Our whole school took part in Renfrewshire Council’s ‘Team Clean
Up’ event which is an initiative designed to encourage everyone to
play their part in helping to keep local areas free from litter.
The children helped to clean up the school playground, Houston
Park and the area surrounding the Co-op. They managed to fill
eight large sacks of rubbish and were very pleased with their efforts.
It was lovely to see our older children support the younger ones
whilst doing something worthwhile to help their local community.
Cameo Club
The children in Primary seven were invited to attend the ‘Cameo
Club’s’ social afternoon at the Houston Church Hall. The children
entertained the guests with some singing, and Lewis played some
tunes on his clarinet.
The children were duly thanked by the ladies and gents with cups
of tea, cakes and an opportunity to play board games together.
It was a great experience for everyone and encouraging to see the
nurturing of intergenerational partnerships!
St Anthony’s Primary School
St. Anthony’s Room 4 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their time at
the Maths Week Scotland Event. There were several events and
activities planned throughout Scotland to celebrate the importance
of maths in our everyday lives. Our children were thrilled to
participate, and were among those who won a prize a £50 voucher
to buy resources for their class. Congratulations to them and Mrs
Henderson for all their hard work.
We are also pleased that our primary six and seven pupils, together
with Fordbank Primary, have had the opportunity to be involved
in a collaboration with local artist Lauren Anderson. They are to
create and design a theme to decorate the Fordbank Underpass.
The local Tenants & Residents Association are delighted that the
much needed upgrade will take place soon and that its local school
children who will be involved in painting the murals.
There is also excitement as we look forward to our Halloween Disco
on the 30th October. A night to “eat drink and be scary” and of
course our teachers and helpers will “keep calm and carry a wand”!!
A “spooktacular” night with wonderful imaginative costumes.
There will be a prize for the best costume but it truly gets harder
to judge every year!
As the nights are drawing in so fast now, it really won’t be long till
our Christmas Fayre, which this year is on Friday 6th December
and will be hosted by our fabulous teaching staff. A warm welcome
is extended to one and all.
Kilmacolm Playgroup
Its been an exciting few weeks at
Playgroup. Our children looked at the
topic of Road safety and transport, and
we had our very own Zebra crossing in
the hall. Each child had the opportunity
to be a lollipop person, an excellent lesson
in role play helping them to understand
the importance of all aspects of road
safety. The classic story of The Very
hungry Caterpillar was our next topic,
and the children enjoyed reading the
book and the fun crafts that went with it.
Once again we had visitors in the shape
of dinosaurs, lots of fun with breaking
dinosaurs out of ice, and looking for
dinosaur bones in sand. Lots of roaring
dinosaurs in Playgroup, and a fun time
had by all.
Playgroup is open to all children from 2 years 4months and
operates on a Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 9.30am - 11.30am.
Spaces available, please email playgroupmembership@gmail.com
for further information.
Are you a new parent, or new to our village or surrounding villages?
Our baby & toddler group is open as a drop in session every
Wednesday morning from 10am - 11.30am. Pop in for a hot drink
and cake while your child enjoys a play; a healthy snack is also
provided for children. A great chance to meet new friends and find
out all about our fabulous group. Open to all parents, carers and
grandparents.
The first Wednesday of every month within the toddler group is
our brand new BBB (babies, bumps and boobs) group. This is a
group for all new parents and expectant mums. Each month we
have breast feeding co-ordinators and other useful information
available.
For more information on any of our groups have a look at our
new website on www.kilmacolm-playgroup.com or find us on our
Howwood Primary School
We have had a wonderful start to the year at Howwood Primary
School. Our new values have been chosen and we are working hard
to ‘Create Good Citizens’. To support our kindness value, all pupils
will lead a
charity event
this year.
Primary 7
kicked this
off with their
Macmillan
C o f f e e
Morning.
They baked
an enormous
amount of
delicious
cakes and invited parents, carers and family along to their community
coffee morning. They raised the amazing amount of £520. Primary
6/5 are busy planning a Swinging Sixties afternoon to raise money
for St. Vincent’s Hospice, and P1 and P2 are collecting for the shoe
box appeal.
P6 pupils had a sporty start to the year by taking part in swimming
lessons, the Renfrewshire Road Race and their Bikeability training
(despite the weather). The have all passed their Level 1 Bikeability
course
Maths Week was full of mathematical challenges, outdoor learning,
family maths, learning about maths at work and working with
money. Primary 1 went down to the local shop to spend their
pennies, and P7 headed to Johnstone High for a cluster challenge.
Learning has been enhanced throughout the school with World War
2 being brought to life in the P7 classroom, P2 making bread for
their Harvest topic, and a visit from the Zoolab for P3’s Rainforest
topic.
We are really looking forward to the winter term.
