of Arthur Price’s business, getting involved in the export side was a natural progression. Here James focused on centralising their courier operation to provide a better, more cost-effective solution to exporting Arthur Price products to some 60 countries nationwide. James made a significant business impact in his next role, developing a totally new B2B special sales arm of the business. “Here, I was sourcing things which may not be cutlery - it could be absolutely anything, from custom products to the factories we use abroad,” says James. “It meant a lot of sourcing internationally, as well as working closely with our factories in Birmingham and Sheffield, which gave me a completely new outlook and skill set within the business.” Over the space of 18 months, James’s hard work saw this sector triple within the business, enabling him to pass the reins to a colleague while he moved onto the next challenge. “It’s all very well saying you’re going to work your way through a business and learn every single aspect, but you can’t just leap from place to place,” he explains. “Each aspect that you deal with has to be in a stable place, where it can continue to grow, before you can pass it to someone else. “It needs to be sustainable. The overall goal is always the business, so you need to make sure things are going well wherever you go.” James’s next task was to take on the catering and hospitality side of the business, and introducing those clients to the next generation of contemporary Arthur Price cutlery. “The biggest challenge I was up against was that people saw us as a UK business - which we are - which provides the best quality stainless steel and silver plate in the most traditional patterns,” explains James. “So people didn’t believe that for the price of the product we were putting forward, and the type of product, it was Arthur Price. It was a strange challenge to have!” But the beautiful, new contemporary patterns soon proved a hit with the hospitality trade - and you will now find modern Arthur Price gracing the tables at prestigious hotels and restaurants around the country and beyond. “The likes of The Berkeley in London took our Sophie Conran range, with Harrods Catering taking the new Signature pattern,” says James. “It increased the presence we have in the catering world and, as a result, has tripled the turnover on the new business side alone.” JAMES WITH HIS FATHER SIMON, James’s success in generating new business for Arthur Price’s hospitality sector saw him earn a promotion to sales director covering the whole of the catering and hospitality side of the business, following the retirement of the previous incumbent - a role James took on in April. “It’s been challenging but fantastic,” he says. “The opportunity for the business is humungous. “It’s a case of proactively and aggressively going after the market, because no-one’s going to do it if you don’t, and competitions will then come in and take your business. “It’s great to see this growth in the business, and catering and hospitality now has the biggest turnover by territory in the business, and we’re the biggest and quickest growing side year-on-year, which is great to see. “I like to think I’m proving my weight!” While time away from the business is - by choice - few and far between, James’s other main focus is his own growing family. He is set to marry fiancée Jodie next year, while the couple are eagerly awaiting the imminent arrival of their first child, due this month - perhaps the one to take the Price business legacy into its sixth generation? “You never switch off - and you don’t want to switch off - because it’s your family business and it’s a legacy at the end of the day. It’s a lifestyle, this business,” James says. “When your name is on the business there’s added pressure, and obviously a lot of pride - you’re carrying a lot on your shoulders. But by coming into the business I signed up for that, just like Dad did, and all the other Prices before him. “I continuously want to prove myself, and prove that I’m 100 per cent the best person for the job, and not just here because my name is Price.” 30
