Curl up with a terrific read this August
Sheila O’Flanagan’s novels are always
fabulous options for those who
love a little chick lit (don’t we all?).
In Her Husband’s Mistake, perfect
couple Roxy and Dave McMenamin
first kissed when Roxy was 16, and
they’ve been in love ever since.
They have a great marriage and a
wonderfully happy life. Until the
morning after Roxy’s father’s funeral,
when she walks in on Dave in bed
with their next-door neighbour. Time,
it seems, for Roxy to make some
big life-changing decisions. Lovely,
warm, funny ... a wonderful book for a
weekend read. Headline UK, R325
Also look out for the best
Jack Ryan thriller yet!
Tom Clancy’s Oath of Office, written
by Marc Cameron, is a roller coaster of
heart-stopping action ... a thriller that
will get your adrenalin going from
the first chapter to the last. When
US President Jack Ryan asks his new
Secretary of Homeland Security what
frightens him, Mark Dehart answers
‘Three things’. Which three? ‘Any three.
If they all happen at the same time.’
From a quiet beach in Portugal where
a beautiful woman kills a French
arms dealer, to protests against the
oppressive regime in Iran, to the
Russian troops and ships massing
on the borders of the Ukraine, across
the world a conspiracy is brewing ...
one so darkly brilliant that no one has
joined the dots. There’s a madman
with a plan ... a plan more devastating
than President Ryan can imagine.
This is the latest (and may well be the
best) in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series.
Penguin, R275
Oh. A new Catherine Alliott novel.
Yay! Just the thing for a chilly
weekend curled up on the sofa
with a box of biscuits. In A Cornish
Summer, Flora’s been in love with her
husband, Hugo, for two decades. Just
a small problem ... for 15 of those years
he’s been married to someone else.
Now she’s been invited to paint her
ex-father-in-law at the family home in
Cornwall. It promises to be a blissful
summer ... except for her awful exmother-in-law,
and ... oops ... it appears
her ex-husband and his (admittedly
lovely) second wife are going to be
there too. Not so blissful after all. A
few lovely twists, great characters,
many laugh-out-loud passages and
you’ve a brilliant chick-lit read. LOVED
it! Penguin, R290
A nine-month-old baby is hard work. Sleep-deprived Carolina and
uncommunicative Aksel are having a tough time but know things will get better.
One evening they go to sleep, Carolina thinking ‘we have thousands of days
ahead of us’ ... but they don’t. Aksel dies in his sleep, leaving Carolina’s world
upside down. Based on author Carolina Setterwall’s own experiences, Let’s Hope
For The Best is all about life’s small moments. It’s about motherhood and family,
love and death. An emotional, honest, unforgettable read. Bloomsbury, R295
Zebra trends
While home decor trends change
continually, one trend has stayed the
same – animal designs are still popular
and in demand. Animal hides are
timeless and classic. The skins create an
instantaneous focal point whether part
of a modern or classic decor style. Think
classic: zebra stripes with white, grey
and black, or modern: black with yellow
or apple green… the combinations are
endless. These magnificent zebra skins
are from Noag’s Market, 19 Pomona
from R4 500 to R8 000.
Networking
women meet
Margaret Hirsch spoke to businesswomen at Hirsch’s monthly
networking morning about how to go from ordinary to
extraordinary. “You can make all your dreams come true, but you
need passion, hard work, focus and the drive to persist until you
get to where you want to be – and then when you get there, do
that little bit more that will make a huge difference,” she believes.
Her main tip is to have clear goals and she advises women to make
a vision board. “God gives you a little money to test you. If you
waste it, he stops giving it to you. If you spend it wisely, he gives
you more,” she explains.
Discover your
PURPOSE
Besides being a gorgeous semi-finalist in the Tammy Taylor Mrs SA Competition,
Despina Senatore (43) helps women to find their true potential and purpose in life.
She’s also launching a book for high-school learners this month.
espina’s definition of a purposeful
woman is “A woman of courage
and determination who takes
deliberate action to empower
herself to achieve her goals. A
woman who knows what she
wants; she is clear on what is
important and where she
wants to go.”
Despina started her business, Purposeful
Woman, a year ago. “Every time I see the light turn back on
in women who attend my workshops I’m reminded of why
I’m passionate about what I do,” she says.
After working in the financial services industry for over 17
years, she became involved in projects to empower women
in the workplace at the company she
was working for. “After a few months of
being involved in these projects I realised
that I found the work meaningful and
rewarding. I felt so passionate and alive
that I decided to start my own company,”
Despina says.
Despina and her hubby, Adolfo, have
three children between the ages of
three and seven. It was after a traumatic
incident in 2015 that Despina, a Linksfield
resident, realised what her purpose in life
was. “Until recently, like most people, I meandered through
life, simply following the path in front of me without much
reflection,” she remembers.
After this incident (which she prefers not to discuss), she
had many questions: her purpose in this life, the point of
life in general and the values with which they were raising
their boys. “My world view that people don’t intentionally
hurt others and that you treat people the way you want to
be treated and that all people are inherently good, was shattered,”
she admits.
She dealt with her emotional stress by working hard,
throwing herself into the empowering projects as well as an
ALP (action learning programme) for the company she was
working for.
12 Get It Joburg East August 2019
When you
become fearless,
everything
becomes limitless
Despina upskilled herself over a period of three years as a
professional coach and she’s currently working towards accreditation
through the International Coach Federation (ICF).
Another matter close to Despina’s heart is the empowerment
of young girls to become a future generation of confident
women through education. “The way we talk and relate to
boys and girls in their formative years shapes their view of
themselves as they grow up and consequently the way they
show up in the world and ultimately in the workplace,”
she believes.
Soar! Inspiration for Your Life, Career and Future is a book she
wrote for high school girls to provide them with insight
into career education and life skills. The girls’ book will be
launched on August 26 and costs R150. A book for boys will
follow soon.
What are the most common struggles
that women need help with?
Self-doubt, lack of confidence, the impostor
syndrome, work-life balance, having an identity
that is separate from mom/wife/career woman.
What are the most important things that
women should know or do to become
purposeful?
• Be clear about why you want to achieve what
you want to achieve. There has to be an
emotional connection, something that will create
enough frustration or excitement to spur
you forward.
• If it makes no real difference to your life to pursue or not pursue
your goal or aspiration, you’re not going to do the work needed to
get there.
• If you’re doing it to please someone else, you’re eventually going
to become resentful.
• Remember that nothing happens overnight.
• Don’t compare your journey to someone else’s. We are all on the
path we’re meant to be, achieving what we need to achieve in the
time we’re meant to achieve it.
• Challenge your self-limiting beliefs; get comfortable with being
uncomfortable.
• Set yourself small realistic goals and be purposeful / deliberate in
the steps you take to achieve them.
GICE0802_012_66913841.indd 12
2019/07/18 12:37:39 PM

• Set realistic target dates for each of your micro-goals and keep
yourself accountable.
• Remind yourself constantly of the destination, but remember
that it is a journey.
• Get support or ask for help – you don’t need to do it all
on your own!
• Celebrate small successes along the way.
Why did you decide to enter the Tammy Taylor
Mrs SA Competition?
To show my kids that one can learn something from doing the
things that are out of your comfort zone or that you’re not
good at. It was also a way for me to reconnect with
me again.
What did you learn about yourself through
the competition?
That I will never get comfortable with social media; it was important
for me to remain true to myself throughout and I achieved
that; I really can achieve anything I set my mind to. It is true what
Napoleon Hill said: “The only limitations we have are the ones we
set for ourselves.”
Would you recommend participating in such a competition
to other women?
I wouldn’t discourage any woman from participating. I’d caution
that there is time commitment over and above your day-to-day
roles. There is work to be done in terms of charity and fund-raising,
and it can get stressful and frustrating. You will learn a lot about
yourself, your spouse and your family through this journey.
Your motto in life?
I try to live by the motto, “When you become fearless, everything
becomes limitless.” It really is about being courageous enough to
try something that is out of my comfort zone, as nerve-wracking
or impossible as it might initially seem.”
Blind golfer
with a zest for life
Helen Keller, an American activist for the handicapped, said, “The only thing worse than
being blind is having sight but no vision.” Boksburg’s Charlene Pienaar lost her sight
at the young age of 20 – but she’s never lost her vision to excel.
The petite 29-year-old was the only blind lady golfer to participate in the 2019 Canon
SA Disabled Golf Open in May, which attracted some of the best golfers with disabilities
from around the world. She triumphed, winning the trophy for the women’s section,
which she also won in 2018.
Charlene was only 20 when she was involved in a car accident and lost 90 per cent of
her vision. “I was devastated. The accident took the wind out of my sails! I was young
and still had my whole life in front of me. It was difficult to adapt to a lifestyle of being
blind, especially the fact that I had to depend on other people. My parents were and still
are my pillar of strength, and I thank God every day for having them in my life,”
she remembers.
“With time I have learned that I am a strong person and that I can still conquer many
tasks – I just have to work harder at it than abled people. I have learned that when God
gives you a dream, you only need to believe … He will see to the rest,” she believes.
Charlene works for Absa, and she is grateful that the bank played an enormous role in
making her life meaningful again. They sent her to Optima College in Pretoria, which
specialises in courses for the visually impaired and teaches them how to cope with
day-to-day chores. Charlene took computer courses – including programming – for
which software was installed on her computer that allowed her to zoom in on the text.
Another big achievement is that she completed her B.Com Marketing degree through
Unisa, studying with a magnifying glass!
In 2016 she decided to take up golf and became a member of the South African
Disabled Golf Association (SADGA) as well as the South African Blind Golf Association
(SABGA). She joined the ERPM Golf Club in Boksburg, where you will find her
over weekends.
In the past three years she has participated in five competitions and won four trophies.
Besides the two SADGA competitions, she also participated in three SABGA competitions.
This association does not have a women’s section, so Charlene had to compete
against men. She won the developmental trophy, and the next year she won a trophy
for third place.
Charlene has proved that she has the strength, courage and determination to live
her best possible life, and she is a fine example of how one can adapt after a
life-changing experience.
Golf Q & A
How does a blind person play golf?
A good caddie is crucial for a blind
golfer. He must line up your ball with
the driving iron. He must also line up
my body in the right
direction. I also make use of a
voice caddie.
What brand of clubs do you
play with?
Cobra – they feel great in my hand.
What is your handicap?
Between 24 and 30. It depends on
the difficulty of the golf course and
whether I have a great caddie
or not.
Your preferred method of playing?
I enjoy playing betterball.
Your favourite golf course?
Komatipoort’s golf course. It’s close to
the Kruger and I can hear the
fish eagles.
How do you prepare yourself before
a competition?
I pray for calmness and peace and to
enjoy the game.
What is your golfing goal?
I would love to play overseas, but I
don’t have the money to fulfil that
dream yet.
When the
food bug bites
His first love was music … until he started cooking for his sister
who had an eating disorder. We chat to Benoni’s Tyrone Kleynhans
about his journey from DJ to head chef.
t the age of 13, Tyrone moved
to Canada with his family.
After school he went into
music production and
became a DJ. He pursued
his music career for six
years. Although music
was his first love, he
felt unfulfilled.
“By the time I was 25 years old, I felt lost
and was desperate to find something
meaningful and fulfilling to do with
22 Get It Joburg East August 2019
my life,” he recalls. The penny dropped
when he decided to help his sister
to overcome her eating disorder. He
started cooking for her and, to make it
fun, he cooked a dish from a country of
his sister’s choice every day … his sister
made a full recovery and he knew which
career he wanted to pursue.
“Through this experience I created a
deep comfort and a sense of calm with
cooking, and I found that while I was
helping her it was really helping me,
too,” Tyrone explains.
By that stage he was 25 years old and
had an urge to return to South Africa.
“I jumped on the computer and started
looking at culinary schools in South
Africa and decided to study at Capsicum
Culinary Studio’s Boksburg campus.”
Tyrone came home in 2013 and began
his studies at Capsicum in 2014. He
graduated in 2015. “I received a great
education, learned a lot about food,
worked at some incredible places
GICE0802_022_97296700.indd 22
2019/07/18 12:02:50 PM

around South Africa and now I am
Capsicum’s head chef at the newly
opened bistro-style restaurant Eat! on
Keyes at their Rosebank campus,” he
says.
He met his wife, Lydia, who is also a
chef, at the Boksburg campus. Asked
who cooks at home, he answers: “We
both cook and we alternate kitchen
duties – and if both of us had a rough
day and don’t feel like facing a frying
pan, we eat two-minute noodles.”
Why did you decide to return to South
Africa? South Africa is the best country
in the world. It has amazing people,
great culture, a wonderful lifestyle,
spectacular landscapes and, of course,
brilliant food. I will forever be proud to
be a South African.
Your favourite restaurant in the
East Rand? I love the little restaurants
around the area. There is so much
talent out this way. My wife and I have
a favourite restaurant at the moment
called On Sixth, which is in Northmead,
Benoni. It is excellent.
If you could cook for five famous
people, dead or alive, who would they
be and what would you make? Kyle
Watson, one of South Africa’s biggest
dance music exports; American chef
and restaurateur Tim Hollingsworth;
actor Chris Pratt; Jesus; and Nelson
Mandela. I would cook my signature
dish – Parmesan gnocchi served with
filet mignon and mushrooms on a bed
of arrabbiata sauce topped with fresh
rocket.
What is your favourite dish when at
home and you don’t have to impress
anyone? I love Pierogies – a Polish
dish – which is basically a dumpling
stuffed with mash, cheese, bacon and
chopped chives.
What is your favourite South African
dish? You just can’t beat a good oldfashioned
braai with boerewors, chops,
toasties and biltong.
What are the best tips you can give
our readers?
• Always cook from the heart. Cooking
can be very therapeutic. If you find life
stressful and you are at your wits’ end,
do some cooking.
• Season your food once it is cooked and
not while cooking. You can always add
salt, but you can’t take it out.
Having said that, I have a little trick if
you are making a stew or soup and you
accidentally throw in too much salt. All
you need to do is poke some holes in a
raw potato with a fork, drop the potato
into your food and it will absorb most of
the salt.
What advice would you give
someone who is considering a career
in the hospitality industry? Don’t
think that the industry is a cooking
show you watch on TV, because it’s not.
No matter what you want to become
in this industry, you will have to start
at the bottom and work very hard to
prove yourself. Never lose your passion,
and always practise cooking on family
and friends. Always stay on top of the
trends and what is happening in the
food world and always respect food
and where it has come from.
Tyrone’s signature dish
Tyrone shared his delicious signature dish with us – Parmesan
gnocchi served with filet mignon and mushrooms on a bed
of arrabbiata sauce topped with fresh rocket … yummy!
Gnocchi ingredients
2 potatoes; 1 egg; 2 cups of flour
Method
Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Peel potatoes and
add to pot. Cook until tender (15 minutes). Drain, cool and mash
the potatoes.
Combine 1 cup mashed potato, flour and egg in a large bowl.
Knead until dough forms a ball. Shape small portions of the
dough into long ‘snakes’. On a floured surface, cut snakes into
3–5cm pieces.
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to the boil. Drop gnocchi in
gently and cook. Gnocchi is cooked when it floats to the top.
(I like to fry my gnocchi in some butter after boiling, but this is up
to you.)
Mushrooms
Get three different types of your favourite mushrooms and fry with
butter and thyme. Season and set aside.
Filet mignon
250 grams filet; salt and pepper; olive oil
Method
Trim any sinew off the filet, season and roll into cling film.
Let the meat rest in the fridge for at least an hour. Fry both
sides of filet in olive oil for colour and then cook in the oven
for 7–10 minutes at around 180 degrees C.
Arrabbiata sauce ingredients
1 tsp olive oil; 4 cloves garlic minced; 1 tbs white sugar;
1 cup onion, chopped; 1 whole red chilli, deseeded and
finely chopped; 3/8 cup red wine; 1 tbs fresh basil;
2 tbs tomato paste
Method
Heat oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat and
sauté onion and garlic for a few minutes. Stir in the wine,
sugar, basil, red pepper, tomato paste, lemon juice, Italian
seasoning, black pepper and tomatoes and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium and simmer uncovered for about 15
minutes. Stir in parsley.
Plate up
Spoon the arrabbiata sauce all around a plate. Place the
filet in the centre of the plate. Arrange warmed-up gnocchi
on the sauce around the filet. Spread the warmed-up
mushrooms evenly on the plate and then top the filet with
fresh rocket and shaved Parmesan. Serve!
Chicken Stew with
Dumplings
Tyrone loves dumplings and has given
us his chicken stew recipe, using a
rotisserie chicken to save time.
Ingredients
500g rotisserie chicken; 2 tbs butter;
1 onion, diced; 2 ribs celery, thinly
sliced; 2 tbs all-purpose flour; 500ml
chicken stock; 1 tsp salt; ½ tsp ground
black pepper; ½ tsp dried or fresh basil;
¼ tsp dried thyme; 2 tbs dried dill;
700g potatoes, diced; 1½ cups
all-purpose flour; 2 tsp baking powder;
24 Get It Joburg East August 2019
½ tsp salt; 3 tbs butter; ¾ cup milk
(or more as needed)
Method
Debone the chicken and cut into chunks or
shred. Set aside.
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large pot
and heat. Add onion and celery and fry
until soft (about 10 minutes). Sprinkle
2 tablespoons flour over and whisk
continuously to make a thick roux, about
2 minutes. Slowly pour in chicken broth
while whisking to remove any lumps.
Add salt, black pepper, basil, thyme,
potatoes and mixed vegetable.
Cover and cook the stew over medium
heat for 15 to 20 minutes until vegetables
are tender. Stir in chicken and continue
to simmer.
Dumplings
Combine the rest of the flour, baking
powder and salt in a large bowl.
Grate 3 tablespoons of butter into the flour
mixture and then rub flour and butter with
your hands until it resembles coarse bread
crumbs.
Stir in the milk and dill (I like to add a bit of
nutmeg at this point, but it’s up to you).
Roll dough into balls of whatever
size you like and add into the
simmering stew.
Cover and cook until the dumplings are
tender (8 to 10 minutes).
the ticket for a variety of dishes. Details: around R145 to R150.
www.delheim.com
Ingredients
500ml fresh cream; 1 tin condensed milk; ½ cup Delheim
Pinotage; 2 tbs berry jam; 200g dark chocolate;
Method
Pour the wine in a saucepan and simmer until reduced by
Pork & Fennel Meatballs with Tomato Sauce (serves six)
Love meatballs? We do … and we really
love this new recipe from Spier, who
suggest (quite rightly) that we enjoy them
with their new Seaward wine. Serve these
hearty nuggets with pasta, mashed potato
or crusty bread. They pair wonderfully with
Spier Seaward Shiraz 2017. This lovely rich
wine has beautifully layered aromas of
mulberry, violets and plum. Details: R110
spier.co.za/wine/wine-ranges/seaward
Ingredients
For the sauce: 45ml olive oil; 3 cloves
garlic (crushed/grated); 2 cans (800g)
whole Italian tomatoes (blitzed to a
smooth pulp); 10ml (2 teaspoons) sugar;
salt and pepper to taste
For the meatballs:
30ml olive oil; 1 onion (finely chopped);
1 fennel bulb (finely chopped, and save
some of the fronds for serving); rind of a
With ice cream, meatballs and wine!
small lemon (finely grated); 10ml smoked
paprika; 1kg pork mince; salt and pepper
to taste
Method
Prepare the sauce: Fry the garlic until
golden. Add tomatoes, sugar, salt and
pepper and bring to a boil. Simmer about
15 minutes or until reduced by a third.
Prepare the meatballs: In a wide pan,
heat the oil and fry the onions, fennel and
lemon rind until they are soft and fragrant.
Remove from the heat and transfer to a
mixing bowl, adding the smoked paprika,
mince, salt and pepper. Mix well. Shape
into balls (about 4 to 5cm in diameter).
Using the same pan as before, add more
olive oil and fry the meatballs on all sides
over medium heat until just cooked. Serve
with the warm tomato sauce. Optionally,
serve with pasta/starch of your choice.
Preparing for spring
We can’t wait for spring,
and August is the month
to start preparing for our
spring gardens by treating
the lawn, fertilising plants
and cleaning gutters.
We’re planting… Osteospermum ecklonis Purple Sun is a new variety
with vivid flowers that announce the beginning of spring. The blooms are
beautiful in shades of orange that fade into a deep purple ring at the centre of the
flower. Purple Sun grows about 25cm high with an abundance of flowers (40cm
wide). It needs full sun and well-composted soil. It also looks great in
containers and hanging baskets. Fertilise the plants in spring and again in
autumn and water regularly. Don’t over-water, as it can tolerate moderately dry soil.
Indoor/patio plant of the month is the beautiful indoor mini-arum lily
(Zantedeschia) that is now available in intense shades of pink, deepening into burgundy.
The trumpet-like flowers are available in eight different colours, and many varieties have
shaded or speckled leaves. They enjoy a warm, sunny room as plants can take some
morning sun. Water them as soon as the soil’s surface is slightly dry. Add liquid fertilisers
to the water about every two weeks. The leaves are toxic to cats and dogs, so keep the
plants out of reach.
Garden tasks for August
• August is a windy month; secure
climbers and stake newly planted
trees. Check the ties of standard roses
and all other standard plants that are
supported by stakes.
• In very cold areas, delay winter
rose-pruning until the middle or end
of August.
• Increase watering to once a week for
most plants.
• Fertilise all plants. Flowering
plants should get 5:1:5 or 3:1:5 and
shrubs and trees, 2:3:2 (or their
organic alternatives).
Fuchsias like a nitrogen-rich fertiliser
at the beginning of the season.
• Remove the spent flowers of
primulas, petunias, pansies and
violas to encourage them to keep
on flowering.
• Give the lawn its spring treatment.
Rake out all the dead grass and then
cut the lawn, with the lawnmower on
its lowest
setting. Compacted ground can be
spiked with a garden fork or a hollowtine
fork. Apply lawn fertiliser and
water in well.
• If the lawn has hollows, is uneven or
there are dead patches, level it with
lawn dressing. Fertilise and water well.
• Remove leaves from gutters and fix
any broken gutters. Why not call in a
plumber to set up a system that diverts
rainwater from the gutters into a tank?
• Clean the garden furniture and treat
any wooden garden furniture.
Check with your paint shop for
suitable products.
Mhondoro
We love a bush getaway ... and one where ellies drink from the pool,
the rooms are OTT comfy and the food’s five star really is a special treat
When you’re sitting having lunch on the verandah and an ellie
strolls past, stopping to drink from the pool in front of you, you
know you’re at a special spot.
More so when an hour later on a game drive you see a leopard
stalk, then chase and bring down a springbok, her five threemonth-old
cubs chasing after her as if to cheer her on.
We’ve just spent a couple of days at Mhondoro Safari Lodge &
Villa in the Welgevonden Game Reserve, and it was indeed a
special treat.
Although the
area’s malaria free,
mosquito nets still
drape the beds. Very
Out of Africa!
The Honeymoon Suite ...
romance in the bush
Very casually strolling by ... the ellies are
regular, and hugely welcome, visitors to the
lodge and, more specifically, the swimming pool.
The Welgevonden area is fairly
rocky and hilly, but the lodge is
built overlooking a flat plain, with a
waterhole in front to which animals
drift all day ... families of warthog
and a dazzle of zebras ... the ellies
appear to ignore it completely and
head straight for the pool, much to
the delight of the guests – most of
whom are international, so imagine
the thrill!
Besides what turned out to include
some sensational animal sightings,
a highlight of our stay was also the
food ... this five-star lodge prides itself
on the fine dining options offered,
and deservedly so. While the boma
dinner was been-there-eaten-that,
other meals were exceptional ...
think eggs Benedict with truffle oil
hollandaise or French toast with
thyme-infused honey and nuts for
breakfast, or later in the day a dish of
beetroot elements (pickled beetroot
and beetroot sorbet, goat’s cheese
and rocket, topped with pumpkin
seed ... bliss), a wonderful wild
mushroom risotto with truffle oil and
Parmesan, and quite possibly the
best rack of lamb we’ve ever eaten.
As much of this as possible comes
from the lodge’s large, flourishing
veggie and herb garden – and it’s
leaning towards being totally selfsufficient
and off-the-grid within the
next year or so.
Accommodating just 26 guests in
total, there are a few chic-African and
edgy European-decorated suites to
choose from, as well as a romantic
Honeymoon Suite, which has a
Honestly. Is there anything
more dramatically wonderful
than an African sunrise or
sunset? We think not!
Fine dining with a view.
heated plunge pool and outside
deck with day bed that overlooks
the waterhole. The suites – think
mosquito-net-draped beds and
roaring fireplaces – sleep either
two or four guests ... but there’s a
magnificent three-bedroom villa.
A marvellous choice for a family or
group of friends, the villa comes with
a private butler, chef and ranger,
and is exceptionally equipped with
a pool, lounge, dining and outdoor
entertainment areas, (it even has its
own gym for heaven’s sake).
Other standout features at the
lodge, where children of all ages are
welcome, include the underground
waterhole hide, which is connected
to the main lodge by a tunnel,
allowing you to safely race off and
see the animals close up, a lovely
spa for those who need even
more spoiling than being out in
the bush provides, a heated pool
and sauna and two great areas
for youngsters – one indoors, one
out. There’s a shooting range, and
rock art excursions, bush walks and
rhino tracking, and really brilliant
yoga retreats can be arranged – get
together six or more yoga friends
and experience yoga in the bush at
dawn or sunset ... how amazing!
Rates range from R5675 a person a
night, sharing, with children under
two free; three to nine paying 50 per
cent of the adult fee, 10 upwards
paying full rate. The Villa exclusive-use
rate is R45455 for four guests, R9091
per extra adult and R5051 per extra
child between three and 11. There are,
however, often specials, so keep an eye
on the website. All rates are inclusive
of meals, selected house drinks, two
game drives a day and reserved
entrance, as well as scheduled transfers
from the Welgevonden main gate.
Children can’t go on regular game
drives, but Bumble Drives can be
arranged and there are babysitters,
as well as fun activities. The area is
malaria free, and the drive is a little less
than three hours from Joburg and OR
Tambo airport – unless you happily
drive along in a daze and miss the N3
turn-off, when you could, as we did,
take the road (much) less travelled, in
which case add, oh, say two hours or
so to your drive time!
A two-night stay for two
in the Natal Midlands
If you’re jolly lucky, you’ll have already visited Brahman Hills in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
This spot, in the 1000-hectare Blue Crane Reserve, has for a while been a top choice for weddings,
conferences and idyllic country escapes. Now the 4-star destination has just added a new option we can’t
wait to experience ... Springholm Cottages. Just four and a half km from the hotel, these cottages are selfcatering,
but you’re close enough to the main venue to enjoy, if you wish, the extensive facilities - we’re
talking two great restaurants, two lovely chapels (the Glass Chapel overlooking a lake, and the new Valley
View Chapel, built partially underground), a purpose-built venue for conferences and private functions,
and a state-of-the-art spa (trust us, you’ll want to book something relaxing and pampering here). If
you can bear to leave, you can visit the Midlands Meander and the neighbouring The Windmills Kitchen.
Details: brahmanhills.co.za or 033-266-6965. We’re giving one reader the chance to take a partner for a
two-night midweek break in one of these new self-catering Springholm Cottages at Brahman Hills. The
prize, on a bed-and-breakfast basis, includes a dinner at 89 on Copper. To enter, simply visit Get It National
Magazines on Facebook, like our Springholm Spoil post, and tag a friend. Entries close August 25.
