Managing traffic smartly
BENIDORM has long
been looking for ways
of managing traffic in
a city notorious for
not always being a
great place for drivers,
especially when
it comes to parking.
They are now putting
a tender out for the
control of mobility that
will include “smart”
traffic solutions. Councillor
Jose Ramon de
Zarate explained the
system saying “it improves
mobility management
by making it
more sustainable, more
effective and more operational
for citizens so
that at any given moment
you can know the
state of the traffic in the
whole city and, therefore,
know in which
streets there may be
a traffic jam or where
there are parking
spaces available.
Internally, it will also
allow the City Council
to know what the flow of
daily vehicles and traffic

is in the city, something
key to making future
decisions about design
or changes in mobility”.
This is all part of the
resort’s ongoing move to
become a “smart city”,
looking for digital solutions
to day to day problems.
The new contractor
will also be responsible
for traffic control cameras
and licence plate
readers at all the entrances
and exits to the
town.
This will allow them
to know ahead of time
when heavy traffic is
coming in and when it
is lighter as vehicles
leave.
Blue zone parking
areas will also be monitored
so motorists can
lead directly to where
there are spaces rather
than driving around
trying to find a spot
and adding to traffic
issues.
