Statues on tour
Low-rated Alicante
ALICANTE CITY has come
bottom of a survey of 43
European cities conducted
by the annual Which?
survey of British favourites
to visit for a mini-break.
Just under five thousand
people took part in the poll,
which showed Poland´s Krakow
come top for the third
year running, followed by
Sevilla, with fellow-Spanish
city, Valencia coming
in third.
Which? asked thousands
of holidaymakers to rate
their recent trips to European
cities taking in a
variety of factors, including
value for money, shopping,
accommodation, and
the quality of the cultural
offerings.
Alicante got poor ratings
over the ease of getting
around, shopping, and
the quality of accommodation,
though it did better on
attractions like the Santa
Barbara castle and the
Old Town.
The survey put popular
tourist areas like Milan and
Brussels just above Alicante
in the league table.
TWO statues by one of
Spain’s most renowned
living artists, Jaume Plensa,
are going on display in
Elche.
The giant female heads,
“Silvia” and “Maria” have
been purchased to allow
them to stay in the Valencian
Community, paid for by
retailer Mercadona and its
charitable foundation.
The pieces have been on
display in Valencia City
and will be in Elche for
eight months before moving
on to an as yet undisclosed
location in Castellon
province.
They are being installed in
Placa del Congres Eucaristic,
next to the Santa Maria
ELECTRIC scooter users
in Alicante City have asked
that the council rethink
some of their planned restrictions
on the vehicles
use before they come into
force early next year.
The new bylaws say riders
must be 16 or over (unless
they have a moped licence),
must wear a helmet, have
However, the most controversial
proposal is their banning
Riders say it is impossible
to get around the city just
using these lanes as they are
not fully connected. Councillor
Jose Ramon Gonzalez
said that “80% of the city”
is accessible currently and
this may improve further
in the future – although not
before the new laws come
into effect.
