GRUPO Z Summit moves to Spain THE offices of Pensions Life have issued the following statement to people affected by the collapse of Continental Wealth Management (CWM) and that are currently seeking legal redress. “It is now confirmed that Pension Life's lawyer, Antonio Bertomeu of Bertomeu Abogados in Denia, will be taking over the case of the three complainants against Continental Wealth Management (Trust); Jody Smart; Darren Kirby and Alan Gorringe. This case is a much simpler AFTER increasingly violent anti-government protests in Chile forced the country to step down from hosting COP25, the climate summit conference, Spain’s offer to stage it has been accepted. The high profile event will now be in Madrid from 2 to 13 December. This has thrown up some problems, not least for one of the highest profile attendees, Swedish teenager and activist Greta Thunberg who was travelling by boat and train to Santiago and now has to completely reroute and make her way to Madrid. Ms Thunberg refuses to use more obvious forms of transport such as flying and has asked if anyone can “give her a lift” in a low carbon fashion. The Spanish government has by Simon Russell offered to help although the details are unclear, most likely a boat across the Atlantic. A more conventional problem is that many Madrid hotel rooms are already booked at this time of year for people looking for a pre- Christmas break in Spain’s capital, renowned for its shopping and markets. Many smaller countries – often those most affected by climate change – think they may struggle to get here with new visas, transport and accommodation being among the issues. In turn they worry that the western countries will be disproportionately represented and spin an agenda that suits their high carbon style of existence. It is clear fraud and the judge will not have any difficulty coming to a decision. Facebook: @TheWeekenderSpain FRIDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 2019 3 Quicker residencias THE BRITISH embassy in Madrid has been told by the Spanish authorities about a new quick appointment system for people trying to get a residencia certificate in Alicante Province. I have been advising in Spain now for over 7 years, and during this time have seen many changes to pension rules. The biggest change by far was the introduction of Pension freedoms in 2015, where people now have the option to access their pension from 55 and essentially have the flexibility to take what they want, when they want it. Pension Freedoms extended to expats living here in Spain and I have sat down with hundreds of clients over the years and discussed their individual pension plans and advised them on their options. About a month ago, I sat down with a client who had a personal pension with Aegon. She has lived in Spain for many years and she contacted me as she was reaching retirement age and wanted to understand what her options were and how she went about accessing her pension. At the meeting she completed a letter of authority which allowed me to contact her pension company on her behalf and discuss her specific plan. by Alex Trelinski A “next day” online booking service has been created in Alicante City, with 180 appointments being opened up every day, with British Finance Feature provided by... When I received the information back from them I was shocked to understand that because she is a ‘non-UK resident’ her options were limited to either take the pension in full (her pension was over £100k so the tax implications would be catastrophic), to purchase an annuity (something which we wouldn’t advise with annuity rates so low), or to transfer to a different scheme. She had no option to leave her pension where it was and access it flexibly. I was convinced that they’d made a mistake so called them for clarification, and during the phone call, they confirmed that the member had limited options as she was a non-UK resident. This member had planned her whole retirement based on her having flexible access to her pension, so it potentially changed her entire future plans. For this client, I was able to find a solution by moving her pension to a UK based pension called a SIPP, where she could not only benefit officials saying that there is a lot of availability each day. It means anybody can take advantage of the new resource in Alicante, as opposed to going to the police stations in Orihuela, Torrevieja, Denia and Benidorm. The additional opening can also be used to apply for "caracter permanente" if you have been a resident for more than five years. My advice to anyone with a pension that they are yet to access is to understand what options are available to non-UK residents.
