The Sky’s
the Limit!
For years, driving on the Mass Pike on the way in
to Boston, we’d see cranes stretching up to the
sky by the Christian Science Plaza and Prudential
Building; they had become part of the skyline. While
not exactly picturesque, those cranes held promise
and symbolized that an exciting moment in Boston
construction and a change to the city’s architectural
fabric was under way.
Now, when you drive in, those cranes are no longer
there (they’ve moved on to another part of the city),
but a new icon is: One Dalton, The Four Seasons
Hotel and Private Residences. This landmark
building, located in the heart of Back Bay and
designed by renowned architect Henry N. Cobb, is
the third tallest in Boston, but may well be tops for
its sophistication and cutting-edge cylindrical form.
After all of those years of admiring this structure
from the outside, I was invited in to One Dalton for
a private party celebrating the extraordinary work
of interior design firm Carter & Company and the
other tradespeople who crafted the incredible unit
that graces our cover for one of One Dalton’s newest
residents (see our Town & Country feature on page
13). It was a privilege to meet the gracious and
down-to-earth couple who call One Dalton home,
raise a glass in that richly appointed setting and, of
course, take in those stunning views from the inside.
That evening I felt incredibly grateful, as I do every
time a homeowner or business opens their doors to
the staff here at BDG and PRELUDE, to allow us to
share exceptional projects with our readers.
It is in this spirit that we bring you a wealth of
settings and stories that you, too, can inhabit on the
following pages. And, to really feel like you are there,
check out Boston Design Guide’s YouTube channel,
which features videos on projects in a variety of
forms and phases. There you’ll find a recent video
with Michael Carter set at his own New Hampshire
lodge, again for our Town & Country feature, that
transports you to his horse-and-buggy era retreat
