Blooming Good Gardening 101<br />
Are you nervous about gardening? Worried you<br />
don’t have green fingers? Well, spring is the perfect<br />
time to test your gardening skills and explore just<br />
how green those fingers really are. Gardening is<br />
very rewarding – what better way to get some fresh<br />
air and exercise? Admittedly though, designing<br />
and planting a garden for the first time can be quite<br />
daunting, if firstly, you have no idea where to begin<br />
and secondly, don’t know what to do. We share<br />
with you some hints and tips on how to get started,<br />
as well as some great garden products.<br />
Start with getting to know your landscape. Walk<br />
around and make rough drawings of the areas with<br />
existing plants. Determine which areas catch the<br />
sun and which have the shade. Get in touch with<br />
your local nursery to do a soil test. If your soil is not<br />
nutrient and pH balanced, take the necessary steps<br />
to get it right for planting.<br />
Be careful when opting to plant edibles in your<br />
garden. The soil must be healthy and free from<br />
lead and harmful chemicals. Make notes of what<br />
you would like to keep as is, what you would like<br />
to change and also what you would prefer to do<br />
away with completely. By just spending time in your<br />
garden often, you will awaken the creativity in you.<br />
Determine what style of garden you would like<br />
to have and perhaps choose a theme and work<br />
towards achieving this look. Browse through<br />
garden magazines and visit your local nursery<br />
for ideas on practical styles and themes. Keep a<br />
photo of your garden space at hand so that you<br />
can always get advice based on what will work<br />
best with the style of your home and your personal<br />
preferences. After determining the style or theme<br />
of your garden, list the activities and features you<br />
would like to enjoy in your beautiful outdoor space.<br />
Children, for example, would need a lot of open<br />
space to play. Once you have these jotted down,<br />
you can work towards achieving them.<br />
As this is your first garden, it is wise to keep things<br />
simple and small. A big garden requires a lot more<br />
time to maintain to ensure that it always looks<br />
good. There will always be the opportunity to<br />
upscale as the seasons go by. The same applies<br />
when it comes to buying plants. Planting is timeconsuming,<br />
so buy only what you can plant within<br />
a day or two, depending on the amount of time you<br />

The right tools are vital to plant a garden well.<br />

heights, colours and textures for an<br />

Bigger and Taller Plants<br />
For immediate impact, buy taller<br />
and bigger plants to create a screen<br />
between you and the neighbours.<br />
Smaller plants will take longer to<br />
grow and therefore won’t be of any<br />
use for a long time.<br />
Be sure to take into consideration<br />
the growth cycle of the plant you<br />
choose – you need to consider how<br />
much the plant will actually grow<br />
