Can you make a real difference to<br />
a child’s life and become a foster carer<br />
with Rochdale Borough Council?<br />
A woman who gave up her teaching career to become a<br />
foster carer is encouraging others to give a loving home to<br />
children who, often through no fault of their own, are in the<br />
care of the council.<br />
Trish, who’s became a foster carer with Rochdale council a year ago,<br />
gave up her teaching job to foster and she says that seeing the children<br />
she cares for thrive in education is a rewarding part of the job: “I have<br />
transferred my teaching skills to use with the children in my care. I feel<br />
that I am making a big difference in enabling the children to be the best<br />
they can be educationally and also in their personal growth.”<br />
There are over 55,000 children and young people living in foster care<br />
placements across England and around 43,500 households foster with their local authority.<br />
However, there continues to be a decline in the number of people becoming foster carers<br />
and councils across England are looking for people to come forward as new carers.<br />
Trish is encouraging people across Rochdale to come forward and support local children<br />
in the borough, she said: “It’s a challenging but rewarding role, which has enabled me to<br />
achieve a better work-life balance as I am at home during the day and not rushing in from<br />
work at 6pm every night. I’d really encourage people to contact the council’s fostering<br />
team and take that first step.”<br />
The former teacher has fostered many teenagers, and she’s encouraging others to<br />
think about fostering teens, she said: “I love fostering teenagers through this difficult yet<br />
exciting stage of their lives. I can teach them vital life skills that will set them up for their<br />
future. They have often already gained a level of life experience, which enables them to<br />
be independent and for me to learn from them too. Teenagers in foster care often have<br />
an undeserved stigma attached to them, however, they usually just require the safety and<br />
stability of a loving family who will listen and respond to their needs.”<br />
The council is always on the lookout for people who wish to take up the rewarding role of<br />
being and fostering carer. We are currently running a campaign urging people who are<br />
considering fostering teenagers, who are often very hard to place, to get in touch.<br />
Training, support and guidance is available from our fostering team and you will have<br />
a dedicated social worker to support you throughout.<br />
Councillor Kieran Heakin, cabinet member for children’s services,<br />
said: “We have an increasing need for new foster carers. We<br />
particularly need to recruit carers for older children and teenagers<br />
and for children who need more specialist care. If you’ve got<br />
experience working with children through your profession,<br />
volunteering or raising your own family we’d like to hear from<br />
you, you can make such a huge difference.”<br />

From The Archives<br />
THE GOBLIN BUILDERS<br />
This is an old tale told by Roby in his<br />
‘Traditions’ about the building of the<br />
Parish Church. It seems that towards the<br />
end of the reign of William the Conqueror<br />
they decided to build a church in what was<br />
then Recedham on the banks of the river<br />
near to where Newgate is now. Timbers<br />
and large stones were gathered there and<br />
stakes driven into the ground to mark the<br />
spot. During one night however, all the<br />
stones, wood and tools were mysteriously<br />
taken up to the top of the hillside overlooking<br />
the town centre although no-one<br />
saw it happening. Next day everything<br />
was brought back down by the workmen<br />
only for it all to be removed again to the<br />
top of the hill next night. Gamel, Lord of<br />
Recedham thought that the workmen were<br />
playing tricks so ordered the materials<br />
back to Newgate. The following night<br />
everything was removed again to the top<br />
of the hill. Advice was sought from the<br />
church authorities and they pronounced<br />
that the church should be built above the<br />
town where the ‘goblin builders’ wanted it<br />
to be. And it’s still there now!<br />
GHOSTS AROUND THE BAUM<br />
The story goes that St Mary’s churchyard<br />
near to the Co-op Museum is a prime site<br />
for ghostly apparitions. Not only has a<br />
ghostly figure of a man been reported in<br />
the churchyard floating gently a few inches<br />

It has become a tradition at Christmas time to tell ghost stories.<br />
Here are a few concerning our town.<br />
above the ground, but it was also the place<br />
where the Baum Rabbit was seen on many<br />
occasions. Recorded as early as 1876, this<br />
was the spectre of a vicious bunny ‘with<br />
fur as white as snow and eyes as red as<br />
blood’ which used to come out at night and<br />
terrify the children. Many a parent kept<br />
his child in check by saying ‘Don’t go to<br />
the back of Yorkshire Street because the<br />
Baum Rabbit will get you!’ You might even<br />
get a glimpse of it in this video captured<br />

THE RAKE CAVALIER<br />
Kathleen Eyre in her book of Lancashire<br />
Legends writes about a soldier, presumably<br />
from the English Civil War who haunts<br />
properties near to Hollingworth Lake. It is<br />
alleged (although not proven) that Oliver<br />
Cromwell stayed in a small house near<br />
to The Rake Inn – thereafter sometimes<br />
known as Oliver’s Cottage (a cottage<br />
where Old Noll, a supposed witch, also<br />
stayed) – and where a Cavalier, no doubt<br />
chasing Cromwell, followed him. It is not<br />
known what happened to the Cavalier,<br />
perhaps he was killed by the Roundheads<br />
but the ghost of a grinning soldier<br />
dressed in support of the King remained –<br />
sometimes drunk – roaming the<br />
surrounding lanes and The Rake Inn itself,<br />
moving silently upon the landing, laughing<br />
to himself.<br />

OWD BETTS GHOST<br />
Not many people can claim that they’ve<br />
filmed a ghost but Amazon TV producer<br />
and ghost hunter Sean Reynolds in 2017<br />
says that, when filming at Owd Betts he<br />
experienced ice-cold air and saw a Bible<br />
and a cushion that had been owned by<br />
the landlady a century before moving on<br />
its own. For his series ‘Ghost Dimension’<br />
he also caught on camera a ghost having<br />
a Christmas drink in the pub. All of these<br />
strange sights were accompanied by<br />
sounds of footsteps and voices all around<br />
the pub believed to be the movements and<br />
chattering of Owd Betty herself who died<br />
in 1893. Many regulars at the Owd Betts<br />
pub claim also to have seen the ghost of<br />
a woman behind the bar, often moving<br />
glasses mysteriously no doubt trying to fill<br />
them with spirits!<br />
There have been many other ghostly sights<br />
in Rochdale, one featuring the public<br />
executioner, Rochdale’s John Ellis who<br />
died in 1932 but, some maintain, still<br />
haunts his father’s barbers’ shop on<br />
Oldham Road. Now a florist, this place is<br />
alleged to be the scene of tricks played<br />
on those alone in the shop, pushing them<br />
about in the room or, for some reason,<br />
slapping their behind! And then there is<br />
the strange story of ‘internal rain’ at a<br />
bungalow on Hill Top Close. The residents<br />
in the 1980’s were puzzled by regular<br />
flooding which occurred in their property<br />
although there was no sign of where it<br />
came from. A phantom coughing and the<br />
smell of smoke in the house continued to<br />
puzzle the occupants. Maybe they should<br />
have checked the lodger or called a plumber!<br />
Clegg Hall of course was the setting for<br />
a well-known Rochdale spook, and you<br />
should see last June’s Streetwise for the<br />
full story of the murder of nephews for<br />
an inheritance leading to ghostly shades<br />
appearing in the Hall’s rooms. Or consider<br />
the tale of Sir Bertine Entwistle who was<br />
killed fighting in the Wars of the Roses<br />
at St Albans but came back to tap on<br />
windows at Foxholes or walk the streets in<br />
clanking armour. Finally, there’s the<br />
Prickshaw spectre of Healey Dell where<br />
the spirits of a dead farmer and children<br />
are said to stand at the windows of what<br />
once were worker’s cottages, pointing at<br />
passers-by. A photograph was taken in<br />
the late 1980’s and certainly, strange<br />
translucent figures – a man wearing a<br />
smock and two children - are plainly<br />
looking out. This might have been a hoax<br />
except that a neighbour who saw the<br />
photograph said that a farmer and his two<br />
children had been killed in a fire at that<br />
same cottage many years before!<br />
There are more stories of Rochdale’s<br />
ghosts and poltergeists and we could<br />
be here all night telling them, but the<br />
candle is burning low and it’s time for<br />
bed. Think about the ghosts of Rochdale<br />
as you turn out the light tonight and<br />
…………. sleep well! Happy Christmas!<br />

Scoops Top Award<br />
Rochdale’s In Bloom community volunteers are celebrating<br />
after walking away with a blooming bunch of awards, received<br />
at Southport on Friday 1st November.<br />
2019 has again been a record-breaking year for Rochdale In Bloom,<br />
with their entry in the RHS North West in Bloom 2019 regional<br />
competition, where for the first time they were named as the overall<br />
category winner after achieving a gold for the Best Large Town/Small<br />
City category, the highest award possible.<br />
The awards are the result of a year of volunteers<br />
working tirelessly on various projects, which has been<br />
undertaken by many local people, groups and projects<br />
from right across Rochdale. Winning the award shows<br />
excellence in horticultural and floral practices, as well<br />
as showing great community participation and spirit.<br />
Judges from RHS came to Rochdale in July and were<br />
overwhelmed with the stunning displays.<br />

ALlotments<br />
It was a cool, damp, misty, November morning but everyone who<br />
attended the Allotment working party were in a buoyant mood<br />
after receiving the results of this year’s R. H. S. North West in<br />
Bloom, It’s Your Neighbourhood Competition.<br />
The Allotments have again achieved a Level 5 Outstanding result.<br />
They are back on track after last year’s disappointing Level 4. Not only<br />
that, it was a surprise to learn that the Allotments have achieved level<br />
5 Outstanding, on 5 years of entries so have received a 5 years<br />
Outstanding award as well.<br />
Along with several new plot holders the tenants<br />
have shown great enthusiasm this year to improve<br />
the Allotments maintaining a high standard<br />
appreciated by the many visitors. This will continue<br />
next year with plans already in the making.<br />

It’s a Silver Gilt for<br />
Denehurst Park!<br />
Denehurst Park has scooped a<br />
top award at the biggest and most<br />
prestigious horticultural competition<br />
in the country, North West in Bloom.<br />
The park was entered into the RHS Park<br />
category for the first time this year by<br />
Rochdale in Bloom after the well visited<br />
community park wowed judges last year<br />
on the Rochdale judging route. It’s a fitting<br />
end to a 3-year transformation that has seen<br />
the introduction of new landscape features<br />
including the Monet bridges, as well as the<br />
restoration of the herbaceous garden and the<br />
new play area.<br />
The judges were especially impressed by<br />
the new ecological and sustainability<br />
features of the stumpery, wildflower planting<br />
schemes, wetland swale and fruit orchard.<br />
The involvement of local schools was as a<br />
real highlight of the park’s development with<br />
Meanwood Primary, Caldershaw Primary and<br />
Redwood Secondary schools all taking part<br />
in projects and events.<br />
This year the park also received its second<br />
Green Flag Award. This international award<br />
is the benchmark for parks across the<br />
country and is a testament to the hard work<br />
and dedication of the Friends group, local<br />
community and council. The park’s Green<br />
Flag can be seen flying at the park main<br />
entrance off Edenfield Road.<br />

<strong>Norden</strong>’s Jubilee Park has once again enjoyed<br />
golden success at the RHS North West in Bloom<br />
awards in Southport on Friday 1st November.<br />
The award-winning green space was bestowed a gold for the RHS Park Award,<br />
matching last year’s golden success.<br />
Paul Ellison, Chairman of the Friends of <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park, said: “The latest<br />
awards won by Jubilee Park just show how the area is going from strength to<br />
strength each year.<br />
“This simply would not be possible without the hard work of our volunteers,<br />
who put so much time and effort into making <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park look as<br />

for the <strong>Norden</strong> space.<br />
Part of the Rochdale In Bloom official judging<br />
route, last year <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park won a national<br />
certificate of distinction, one of just four presented<br />
across the UK.<br />
The regional North West in Bloom competition<br />
consists of two judging days. The first is a guided<br />
tour taking in areas of interest around Rochdale;<br />
the second allows for visits to community-based<br />
projects that include local schools, allotments, health<br />
and well-being projects and conservation areas.<br />

<strong>Norden</strong> Remembers, Lest we Forget<br />
At 11am on Sunday 10th November 2019, members<br />
of the <strong>Norden</strong> community gathered to celebrate an<br />
act of remembrance at the Memorial Gardens on<br />
Edenfield Road. The gathering was the largest in<br />
recent years as Rev. Willis led the service and the<br />
names of the fallen were read aloud by children<br />
from local uniformed groups. As the last post rang<br />
out the gardens fell silent before wreathes were laid<br />
at the cenotaph.<br />
This years service was especially moving as, for the<br />
first time, an active member of the armed forces was<br />
present to lay a wreath and make a formal salute to<br />
the fallen. Many veterans were also present to<br />
remember friends and family.<br />
Displays of poppies had be laid around the<br />
memorial including knitted poppies from the WI<br />
and paintings from local children, and many more<br />
added crosses and crafted items.<br />
The service conclude with the national anthem and<br />
prayers.<br />

INGREDIENTS<br />
250g butter<br />
200g golden syrup<br />
100g soft brown sugar<br />
250g porridge oats<br />
100g plain white flour<br />
150g mincemeat<br />
25g glace cherries - roughly chopped<br />
Splash vanilla essence<br />
METHOD<br />
1. Grease and line a shallow baking tray<br />
(approx 30cm x 25cm) with baking<br />
parchment.<br />
2. In a small pan melt the butter, syrup and<br />
soft brown sugar.<br />
3. Add the oats, flour, mincemeat, cherries<br />
and vanilla to a mixing bowl then stir in<br />
the butter and syrup mixture.<br />
4. Spoon the mixture into your prepared tin<br />
then bake at 160°c for<br />
10 minutes until just set.<br />
5. Remove from oven,<br />
leave to cool then turn<br />
out of the tray. Cut into<br />
small squares or slice<br />
into bars.<br />

FESTIVE RECIPES<br />
INGREDIENTS<br />
1 tsp olive oil<br />
2 shallots or 1 small onion,<br />
finely chopped<br />
450g pork sausage meat<br />
3 tbsps fresh chopped sage<br />
1 garlic clove, crushed<br />
320g pack puff pastry ready rolled<br />
2 tbsps English mustard<br />
1 egg, beaten<br />
Deluxe Sausage Rolls<br />
METHOD<br />
1. Heat the oil in a small pan and gently fry the chopped<br />
shallot until soft. Leave to cool.<br />
2. Mix the sausage meat, garlic, sage, mustard and<br />
seasoning with the shallots.<br />
3. Unroll the pastry and cut in half lengthways.<br />
4. Form the mixture into a sausage and place down the<br />
middle of each piece of pastry. Brush the edges with<br />
egg and fold over. Seal with a fork.<br />
5. Cut into 12 pieces and place on a baking tray. Brush<br />
with egg and make slits on the top with a sharp knife<br />
6. Bake at 200°C/Gas 6 for 30 minutes or until golden<br />
brown and thoroughly cooked. Can be frozen and<br />
reheated to serve.<br />
Apple, Cranberry and Christmas<br />
Mincemeat Crumble<br />
INGREDIENTS<br />
500g cooking apples<br />
250g good quality<br />
Christmas mincemeat<br />
150g fresh cranberries or<br />
100g dried cranberries<br />
50g-100g demerara sugar<br />
125g plain flour<br />
75g porridge oats<br />
100g brown sugar<br />
100g butter<br />
METHOD<br />
1. Peel core and slice apples and place them in a dish<br />
after mixing with cranberries and mincemeat. Sprinkle<br />
with demerara sugar.<br />
2. Make crumble by rubbing butter into flour until it<br />
resembles breadcrumbs, mix in sugar and oats.<br />
3. Sprinkle crumble over fruit mixture and bake at<br />
180°C/170°C fan or Gas 4 for 25 to 35 minutes<br />
or until golden and apples are cooked.<br />
4. Serve with custard, pouring cream or clotted cream.<br />

Rochdale Social Care require 348 gifts for children of various<br />
ages, with a heavy heart I’m sad to say that the number has<br />
doubled from 2018.<br />
But that is not going to deter us as we managed to collect over 650 gifts last year!<br />
The gift tags have an age and gender of a child, e.g. boy age<br />
4, girl age 6. In previous years we had the child’s first name<br />
but Social Care has requested we do it this way for 2019.<br />
If you wish to get involved, please purchase a gift<br />
between the value of £5-£10. Please do not go<br />
above that amount as there can sometimes<br />
be 6 plus children in a family and it keeps it fair.<br />

Friends of <strong>Bamford</strong> Update<br />
In September, work finally began on the new Woodland Walk,<br />
Community Garden and Wildflower meadow, planned for the<br />
overgrown and neglected area at the back of <strong>Bamford</strong> Green,<br />
opposite <strong>Bamford</strong> Precinct.<br />
This is a joint venture between Environmental Management and Friends of <strong>Bamford</strong>.<br />
It is a huge area, FOB can’t do it without EM help, but EM have no funding, so can’t do<br />
it without FOB help, so a partnership has been formed, under the guidance of an EM<br />
Project Manager. Plans have been drawn by FOB, approved by EM, and funding from<br />
various Council sources has been applied for by FOB.<br />
So far, only funding for the first part of the 3 stage plan has been obtained, which paid<br />
for contractors to partly clear the wood, and lay the paths. Already it looks much better.<br />
It was hoped that FOB volunteers would plant bluebell bulbs alongside these new paths<br />
and through the woods this Autumn, to bloom next Spring, but due to a combination of<br />
bad weather and red tape this has not yet been possible, though we live in hope that we<br />
may manage to get at least some planted before the first frosts make it impractical. If<br />
not there’s always next year.<br />
Funding for Stages 2 and 3 have been applied for, but not yet guaranteed, for work<br />
to re-commence next Spring. Next is Stage 2, which is tree work, top soil for actual<br />
garden, plants and seating area, to be followed by stage 3, which is the creation of<br />
wildflower meadow, and a children’s area with an animal bench, horizontal carved log,<br />
and large carved toadstools.<br />
All funding is dependant on the involvement of the people of <strong>Bamford</strong>, to help with such<br />
things as planting, yearly basic maintenance etc., in conjunction with EM. They will help<br />
us, work with us and do all they can, but cannot do it FOR us.<br />
