if the
We speak to Karl Edwards, of
Crosby & Lawrence, to find
out what he recommends
when it comes to purchasing
sportswear...
A common error is wearing the wrong trainer or wrong size. For
running, we have both neutral & corrective trainers. Corrective
trainers aid those who over-pronate (excessive rolling inward of
ankles) & help correct the gait. This is common in people with
low arches or flat feet. Wearing corrective trainers when they
are not needed can actually lead to further issues or even injury.
Feet can be looked at & appropriate advice given in store & this
is one of the reasons we do not sell online. And of course, all
trainers vary in size according to brand & style.
Trainers are now tailored to each individual sport with
appropriate technicalities built in to them. We see various
damage on trainers or even injury from wearing inappropriate
footwear, wearing a running trainer to play tennis for instance.
Some simple fundamental differences in the shoes are based on
body movement within the sport. Running trainers are designed
to go heel to toe, where as a tennis shoe is designed to move
side to side, forwards, backwards & has drag protection. This
does not mean there can’t be any cross over but, we always aim
to provide the most appropriate trainer based on an individual’s
needs.
How has sporting emphasis changed?
Team sports have grown in popularity & we are lucky to have
such a diverse range of clubs for all ages & abilities in this area.
Any sport you can think of, there is a local club from Hockey,
Football, Rugby & tennis to the lesser known sports, Tri-athlon,
Fives’ & Boules for example. Even individual sports have clubs
promoting health, socialisation, motivation & fun!
Do you have a favourite sport yourself?
I have played football all my life & enjoy watching it. I also
enjoy playing a variety of sports especially cricket (KVCC). We
have been spoilt this past year or so with the entertainment &
successes of both Mens & Ladies national teams in the CWC,
World cup, RWC & so on.
Who are your sporting idols?
Other than Paula Radcliffe, for me, it would be Matt LeTissier.
His on the pitch performance was simply magical but, he never
left Southampton & the people he adored. He was offered eye
watering contracts to play for “bigger” clubs but, stayed loyal
to his first club. This was & is a very rare quality to have. He
was motivated through the enjoyment of sport, the fans & not
financial reward.
