GRAND PLANS
Have big ambitions for your home? We find out
more about some of the area’s most talented
and creative architects and designers
Cruice Goodall
Architecture & Design
Director Benedict Goodall offers a
very personal service with a keen
eye for maximising a project’s
potential bringing in natural
light and rationalising space and
storage.
Older properties are not always
geared toward modern living
aspirations – how can they be
sensitively adapted?
Careful analysis of the building’s
history and structure leads to a
more seamless build, often helping
to uncover the best way to adapt a
space to suit modern living whilst
retaining original character.
Many of us think our projects are
too small to warrant involving an
architect, but when is it advisable to
work with one?
Almost always! A good architect
will ensure you get the best result
for your project, from the concept
phase through to completion, using
their experience to reduce the risk of
delays and unexpected costs.
If there was one tip you could give
all clients ahead of a project, what
would it be?
Take your time at the outset, agreeing
the budget and plans with your
architect. Changes and surprises
later are costly and can compromise
your project.
A D Draughting
Alex Dawson is a director of A.D.
Draughting Ltd. who provide
a comprehensive service from
project inception to building. Based
in Marlborough, plans are drawn to
an exceptional standard of detail
and quality.
Many of us think our projects are
too small to warrant involving an
architect, but when is it advisable to
work with one?
It is always better to garner
professional opinion. You are not
just employing someone to draw
some plans and get the necessary
consents, you are drawing on 30
years’ experience on what works and
where value lies.
How have you seen spaces change
over your career?
Design comes and goes in fashions.
Separate kitchens have given way to
open plan living. Different eco-friendly
materials are on the radar of a lot of
clients and how to connect to the
outside is also more prevalent.
If there was one tip you could give
all clients ahead of a project, what
would it be?
Keep an open mind. While the basic
requirements of a project may be
clear, how that objective is achieved
may be extraordinary.
DRA Architects
DRA Architects was established in
1950 and operates from Devizes
in Wiltshire employing Architects,
Architectural Assistants and support
staff. Nigel Keen is Director.
Many of us are looking to improve
rather than move – how can working
with an architect add value?
By working with an Architect, a client
will be tapping into a whole wealth
of knowledge and experience. This
can help to enable clients unlock the
inherent potential of their property to
satisfy their needs and desires.
Older properties are not always
geared toward modern living
aspirations – how can they be
sensitively adapted?
We find that each project is different,
with some properties only requiring
a ‘light touch’ whilst others require a
much bolder approach. With a ‘light
touch’ which we often refer to as
the ‘scalpel approach’, we carefully
strip back layers of history to expose
the essence and character of the
building.
If there was one tip you could give
all clients ahead of a project, what
would it be?
Seek advice at an early stage to
establish the exact needs and to
then help open-up the project’s
full potential in an efficient and
meaningful manner.
