architect, but when is it advisable to
work with one?
Almost always! A good architect
will ensure you get the best result
for your project, from the concept
phase through to completion, using
their experience to reduce the risk of
delays and unexpected costs.
If there was one tip you could give
all clients ahead of a project, what
would it be?
Take your time at the outset, agreeing
the budget and plans with your
architect. Changes and surprises
later are costly and can compromise
your project.

Many of us think our projects are
too small to warrant involving an
architect, but when is it advisable to
work with one?
It is always better to garner
professional opinion. You are not
just employing someone to draw
some plans and get the necessary
consents, you are drawing on 30
years’ experience on what works and
where value lies.
How have you seen spaces change
over your career?
Design comes and goes in fashions.
Separate kitchens have given way to
open plan living. Different eco-friendly
materials are on the radar of a lot of
clients and how to connect to the
outside is also more prevalent.
If there was one tip you could give
all clients ahead of a project, what
would it be?
Keep an open mind. While the basic
requirements of a project may be
clear, how that objective is achieved
may be extraordinary.

much bolder approach. With a ‘light
touch’ which we often refer to as
the ‘scalpel approach’, we carefully
strip back layers of history to expose
the essence and character of the
building.

Seek advice at an early stage to
establish the exact needs and to
then help open-up the project’s
full potential in an efficient and
meaningful manner.
