It has been a long journey and years of 

perseverance for Kit Williamson to reach 

the pinnacle of success in Hollywood. He 

writes, produces and stars in Netflix’s hit 

show ‘EastSiders’, nominated for 8 Emmy 

Awards and translated into more than 30 

languages. 

Kit was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. 

He left home at 16 to study acting 

and writing at Interlochen Arts Academy 

in Michigan. He began his career on Broadway 

in the Tony-nominated revival of Talk 

Radio with Liev Schreiber while a Junior at 

Fordham University, and went on to receive 

his MFA in playwriting from UCLA. 

This is the final season for EastSiders, so I 

chatted with Kit about the show, his plans 

and his big ‘country’ secret. 

VG: Modesty aside, how would you describe 

yourself? 

KW: I’m an actor, a filmmaker, an internet 

person, a Mississippi expatriate and a queer 

propogandist. 

VG: The fourth and final season of EastSiders 

is about to premiere, a show you wrote, 

directed and starred in. How does the anticipation 

of a new season premiere feel? 

KW: It feels so amazing having people 

reach out from around the world, including 

from countries where being gay is illegal. 

It’s really rewarding, because I grew up in 

Mississippi, so I know firsthand the power 

of representation. 

VG: When you started to create the show 

as a web series with a kickstarter campaign 

for YouTube, did you ever imagine that it 

would be this popular?

kits” or resin models of anime, manga, and 

video game characters. The models—some 

made by professionals, some by amateurs— 

are extremely detailed and, especially 

because they are not for mass production, 

are highly sought after by dedicated 

collectors and fans alike. There is a huge 

range of works on display, from the overly 

sexualized cuter-than-cute characters to 

the sword-wielding demons of nightmares.

of copyrighted characters, companies allow 

them to be sold without royalties or any 

other charges for the day. The Wonder

Out and about Holiday gift giving 

Holidays are a great time to build 

traditions. When I was a child, we would 

visit a place called Edaville Railroad. Ellis 

D. Atwood gave this historic amusement 

park its name, his initials (E.D.A). He 

started this railroad by purchasing most of 

the surviving equipment from Maine’s once 

expansive network of two-foot gauge rail’s 

and had them trucked south to Carver, 

Massachusetts for the cranberry bogs, 

then a trip to our famous rocks Plymouth 

rock and digestion and Indian head rock. 

But here is California, you can start new 

traditions. 

Next is one of my favorites, as a child I used 

to hike the New England woods in search 

of the lady slipper flower. It was a rare and 

beautiful flower but I did not know it was a 

an orchid! A wild indigenous Orchid! 

The Gubler family Orchid. Originally in 

Switzerland, Gubler Orchids was opened in 

1918 by Heir Gubler. It was his second son, 

Hans, who moved to California to chase 

the American dream and in 1954 started 

Gubler Orchids (US) selling the orchids 

literally from his station wagon. Open:

CHRISTMAS CARD ART FROM THE FIRST CARDS TO TODAY 

Christmas cards are not prehistoric, 

in fact, the first Christmas card is 

ascribed to an English postman by the 

name of Henry Cole, He had been 

successful in passing a reform to lower 

the price of a postage stamp to one 

penny in 1843. To encourage people 

to use the newly discounted postage 

his idea was to introduce the concept 

of sending a greeting card to friends 

and relatives. He commissioned the 

artist John Calcott Horsley to design the 

card. The card featured a scene with a 

large family around a table. Small side 

scenes were added that displayed people 

in acts of charity. This was the same 

year coincidently that Charles Dickens 

published the Christmas Carol. This was 

the only single Christmas card published. 

With the new lithographic printing 

which had just come into being, one 

thousand cards were printed and were 

all successfully mailed using the new one 

penny postage. 

The first Christmas card designed 

and marketed in the United States is 

attributed to Louis Prang. Prang was 

an immigrant from the country that is 

now Poland. He settled in Boston in 

1850 where he worked with Julius Mayer 

to form Prang and Mayer, lithographic 

printers. Prang returned to Europe in 

1864 to study the new techniques of 

color lithographic printing. The first 

Christmas card printed was a floral

design in color with the words Merry 

Christmas. The first card printed in 1875 

was a success. The next year five million 

cards were printed. 

Prang held a design contest in 1884 open 

to artists and designers with prizes of 

$1000., $500, $300, and $200. This was a 

substantial monetary award at this time 

of history and it attracted well-known 

artists and designers including the architect 

Stanford White and designer Louis Tiffany. 

The Prang company continued to print 

cards until the 1890's when inexpensive 

cards began importing from Germany. 

Prang is also the founder of the Prang art 

materials company which is responsible 

for Crayola crayons and other art materials 

that are widely used today in schools and 

by artists. 

Christmas cards are now available in 

personal photo cards, elaborate design 

cards that are sent from corporations to 

their patrons, cartoon cards, cards that play 

carols, Christmas cards that convey almost 

any conceivable message that one could 

want to send representing the holiday. 

Today the two largest printers of Christmas 

cards and greeting cards, in general, 

are the Hallmark Card Company and 

American Greetings. In discussions with 

representatives of each of these companies 

regarding the marketing of cards 

specifically to the LGBTQ community, 

we will look at how our community is 

being considered and represented in the 

marketing of Christmas cards and greeting 

cards overall.

While the Democrats are arguing if

We had the greatest generation and their 

baby boomers that took all politics to their 

wallet, and subsequent generations that 

asked about the poor and marginalize and 

did not label or categorize them into molds, 

instead they look at the individual when 

attempting to make positive changes to the 

people impacted. Changes that are science 

based and peer reviewed by scientific 

experts, but are also the voices of the people 

that will be impacted. 

Because we all come in different sizes, ages, 

and colors. We are poor or rich, we are 

people that need to know our government 

will work for us but also protect us. We 

give our work, and also the blood of sons 

and daughters to have free speech and be 

protected from hate peach, indifference, 

and have visibility. All this is required for 

the simple goal of the pursuit of happiness.
