Yet, in a largely non-Christian country that only recentlybegan to take a passing interestin the Western holiday season,finding the right place to observethis important Christian holidaymight not be so easy for peoplespending Christmas in China.In Hangzhou, you can always discoversomething new: last year I was walkingnear Wulin Square, and between theapartments and the shops I noticeda building that didn’t look like a typicalChinese temple. As I got closer, I realisedit was a Catholic cathedral. This buildingwas the Cathedral of Our Lady of theImmaculate Conception, a Roman Catholiccathedral located at 415 ZhongshanRoad North ( 中山北路 415 号 ).The Cathedral’s HistoryThe Cathedral of Our Lady of theImmaculate Conception was originally builtin 1661, and it is one of the oldest churchesin China. Its original Romanesque form wasdesigned with three naves and two rowsof columns separating them. The cathedralwas built by Martino Martini, an ItalianJesuit, and leading geographer of the 18thcentury. Martini is celebrated as the firstItalian to undertake the study of Chinesehistory and geography with meticulousscientific impartiality. The added acclaimin China and beyond, alludes to his acuteawareness of Chinese culture and profoundunderstanding of all things Chinese becamethe intellectual bedrock upon which themodern study of sinology has been built.In 1691, during the Qing Dynasty, thegovernor of Zhejiang, Zhāng Pénghé,banned Catholicism and took control ofthe cathedral. The following year, underpressure from the Italian Jesuit ProsperoIntorcetta, the emperor ordered therestoration of the cathedral. Unfortunately,the cathedral was severely damaged in afire later that year and remained unrepairedfor nearly a decade, until 1699. It wasonly when the Kangxi Emperor passed byand saw the cathedral for himself that hedecided to grant funding to complete itsrepairs. He also had the two characters " 敕建 " (chìjiàn, "built by order of the emperor")inscribed upon the cathedral gate.• MASS TIMINGSGeneral masses in Chinese areheld every Sunday morningat 6:30, 8:30, 10:30 and 19:00.There is an English mass held onSaturday evenings at 18:30.• CHRISTMAS MASS TIMINGSThe Cathedral of ImmaculateConception looks stunning duringChristmas time; and the cathedralwill host a Christmas Eve Masson Tuesday, 24th Decemberand a Christmas Day Mass onWednesday, 25th December:Christmas Eve Mass, 23:00Christmas Day Mass (Chinese), 7:00Christmas Day Mass (English), 11:00redstarhangzhou.com 17
