SIP AND SAVOUR
THESE WINTER
ALCOHOLIC
DRINKS
By REDSTAR’s Ganbei Girls
• HOT TODDY
Hangzhouvians who have spent a winter here know what those
long, cold months are like; wet days with a frigid air that seeps
into your blood, and chills you to the bone. Luckily, Hangzhou has
an abundance of locations that offer a wide array of beer, wine,
and cocktails to help ward off those winter chills. So, wave zàijiàn
( 再 见 ) to summer’s light yet refreshing thirst-quenchers and
offer a hearty nĭ hăo ( 你 好 ) to the following beverages designed
to make you feel warm and toasty.
A winter staple, the hot toddy is a classic hot
cocktail that is sure to keep you warm and
toasty. With a long and varied history, not to
mention multiple cultures duelling to claim
the original as their own, there is no ‘standard’
recipe for the hot toddy, so bartenders and
mixologists have a lot of freedom when creating
their offering. At Wade’s, the brew is a delicious
mix of sweet black tea and white rum, spiced
up with lemon, cloves and cinnamon. The result
is sweet and zesty, warm and comforting, and
a perfect remedy for the cold and rain. Once
touted as a “cure-all for the common cold,” if you
imbibe, you could always claim it’s for ‘medicinal
purposes’ (40 RMB a glass at both Wade’s,
Wensan Branch and Wade’s, Wulin Branch).
