Kaiapoi’srenaissance continues<br />

Nearly 10 years on from the<br />
September 2010earthquake,<br />
Kaiapoi’s regenerationis<br />
well advanced, withmore<br />
projects plannedfor this<br />
year.<br />
Anew BMX track,dog<br />
park,sports fields and the<br />
HondaForest were<br />
developedlast year,while<br />
work to develop softball<br />
pitches, changing rooms,<br />
toilets and car parking is<br />
abouttostart, aWaimakariri<br />
District Council<br />
spokespersonsays.<br />
The KaiapoiTuahiwi<br />
CommunityBoard approved<br />
Norman KirkPark as the<br />
name for the new Kaiapoi<br />
east sport and recreation<br />
reserve, which includes the<br />
sports fields, the BMX track,<br />
the forest and the dog park.<br />
The councilhas called<br />
tenders for asports field<br />
irrigation system, with the<br />
contract to build two softball<br />
pitches being awarded in<br />
December to TigerTurf.<br />
Work is expected to begin<br />
next month.<br />
The contract to buildthe<br />
Norman KirkPark changing<br />
roomswas awarded around<br />
the sametime to Watts&<br />
Hughes.<br />
It will include player<br />
changing rooms and<br />
showers, officials’changing<br />
rooms, storage and public<br />
toilets.<br />
Infrastructure recovery<br />
work is welladvanced, with<br />
all planned road<br />
decommissioning and repair<br />
works, including the Jones<br />
Street quake repairs and<br />
stormwater drainage pipe<br />
repairs,completed.<br />
The contract to upgrade<br />
the retained roads in<br />
Kaiapoi East was awarded to<br />
Nor’westContracting Ltd in<br />
November, withwork under<br />
way on the Cass Street car<br />
park. This work is due to be<br />
completed in June.<br />
Repairs to the last section<br />
of the quakedamaged<br />
Kaiapoi riverbank walkway,<br />
between TrousselotPark and<br />
the Williams Street bridge, is<br />
expectedtobecompleted in<br />
the first half of this year.<br />
Further dredging work to<br />
improve navigation on the<br />
Kaiapoi River will beginin<br />
June <strong>2020</strong>.<br />
The initial dredging work<br />
carried out by SmithCrane<br />
and Construction allowed for<br />
the installation of 11 pontoon<br />
sectionswhichnow form a<br />
new 112metre long floating<br />
pontoon.Ithas three<br />
berthingsections.<br />
One berthhas been leased<br />
for the commercial paddle<br />
steamer replica, the Kaiapoi<br />
River Queen,and the other<br />
two are available for casual<br />
or permanent leases.<br />
The council is also working<br />
on site option assessments<br />
for proposed new parkandride<br />
facilitieswithinthe<br />
town centre mixeduse<br />
businessarea, in the former<br />
residential red zone.<br />
Walk time ... Kevin Boniface, of Kaiapoi, and his English springer<br />
spaniel, Koda, enjoy Kaiapoi’s dog park which opened late last year.<br />
More facilities in the river town will be built this year.<br />
