Seasons later in NC By DAVID HILL Late seasonal conditions are creating a few headaches for the region’s farmers. Federated Farmers North Canterbury president and Oxford dairy farmer Cameron Henderson says while January’s dry and mild conditions are ‘‘nothing out of the ordinary’’, this season’s weather has produced mixed results. ‘‘There is aconcern that all of our seasons seem to be later this year. We had alate winter into August and it feels abit like spring at the moment. ‘‘October was abit cold and then December was windy, hot and dry, which set us back awee bit. ‘‘There was plenty of water in the river, but we couldn’t use it. It certainly caught afew people off guard.’’ Mr Henderson says production is tracking reasonably well compared to last season, though ‘‘the bumps are hitting us at different times of the year’’. ‘‘These conditions are pretty good as long as you’ve got water on hand. Feed quality seems to be holding up pretty well. ‘‘The cows are in good condition, there’s plenty of feed on hand and it’s not too hot on the cows. Alot of the guys were feeding out in December for a week, but now we’re back into surplus.’’ Fonterra’s forecast farmgate milk price is also looking stable, which is good news for dairy farmers. Federated Farmers’ meat and wool chairman Daniel Maxwell, of Cheviot, says there is plenty to be positive about in the meat industry. ‘‘The markets have been really good. Prices have come back abit now as they always do, but the mood is still generally very positive.’’ Prices for prime lambs and store lambs were positive before Christmas, Cameron Henderson but now it is amatter of waiting for ‘‘the cropping guys to do their harvest’’ before selling off the remaining store lambs, Mr Maxwell says. ‘‘At this time of year the market always goes abit flat.’’ He says having around 26,000 ewes on sale at tomorrow’s Hawarden Ewe Fair is apositive for local farmers. ‘‘The works price for ewes before Christmas was fairly strong, but there should be good opportunities for farmers to restock.’’ While prime wool prices have been positive, farmers are effectively making aloss to shear strong wool sheep, he says. Conditions on farm are also normal for this time of year, Mr Maxwell says. ‘‘Yes, we are dry at the moment, but that’s what happens in North Canterbury at this time of year. ‘‘As long as we get that autumn rain around the Cheviot show weekend we will be right.’’ Examination of succession North Canterbury farmers wanting advice on farm succession planning could benefit from workshops in Rangiora. More than half of sheep and beef farms are expected to change hands over the next decade, meaning succession can be apressing issue for some farmers. ARed Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP) workshop series, covering farm business transition and succession, starts on March 11. It aims to help farmers navigate the process. RMPP chairman Malcolm Bailey says there is an opportunity to help farmers work through issues and plan for positive outcomes. “Many farmers have said they find it hard to know where to start the conversation because of the emotional attachment they have to their farms, and the tensions of handling significant assets, often with competing family interests. “A key goal for RMPP is to help farmers through this process by providing information regarding succession options and ownership structures, and sharing examples of successful outcomes.” Farmers will be provided with resources and advice to help them explore the range of options available to them as they look at transition and succession. Mr Bailey says there is also a possibility of linking people wanting to progress in the redmeat sector with those wanting to exit. The workshops will run on Wednesday, March 11, April 8, and May 13, at the Rangiora Town Hall. They are limited to eight farm businesses, with up to four people from any one business able to attend. After 30 years ofuninterrupted classic race meeting, the Canterbury Car Club along with the long-time sponsorand supporter, SkopeIndustries, will celebrate the iconic two-day birthday event this weekend with some fanfare. Originally under the name ofthe BP Alfa Classic, PDLIndustries took over namingrightsin1995 before Skope became involved in2003. The enthusiasm from competitors and the public has never waned, and the meeting remains the biggest in both entry and crowd numbersonthe club’s calendar. Ahandful of cars from the inaugural 1991 event remain andwhile thevalue of thesecarshas increased, thecurrent owners stillbelieve that as racing cars,their rightplace is on thetrack. Over the years the event has invariably carried a theme. This year itwill celebrate 50 years of the Open Saloon CarAssociation (OSCA). StrictlyaSouthIsland affair these days, OSCA was formed byalocal group who deemed that the costs of racing inthe national championship for “all-comers” type cars had become tooexpensive. While the major attraction is awonderful array of cars, the meeting isalso designed tocater for families. Pit entry comes atnoextra charge and spectators are welcome to mingle with drivers and their cars. For younger family members, there will be anumber of activities.
