the Kaikoura Flats, nearby<br />

streets, homesorbusinesses.<br />

The group is tasked with<br />

helping to planstrategiesto<br />

leadthe restoration of the<br />

creek,improvewaterquality<br />

and to bringback the<br />

community’s connectiontothe<br />

waterway.<br />

‘‘That’s why your help is<br />

neededtoprotect andenhance<br />

the space thatwas oncea<br />

central partofKaikoura’s<br />

identity,’’ an Environment<br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> (ECan)spokespersonsays.<br />

Association expects <strong>2020</strong>tobe<br />

abusy year for the town.<br />

Kaiapoi brand concept and<br />

organising amonth­long<br />

festival in September are<br />

priorities for this year.<br />

He said abreakfast<br />

workshopheld late last year<br />

revealed that businessessaw<br />

developing walking and cycle<br />

routes and establishingan<br />

iconic eventasessential to<br />

developing aKaiapoibrand.<br />

The obvious contendersfor<br />

an iconic eventincludethe<br />

Kaiapoi Christmas Carnival in<br />

December and the river<br />

carnival, on March1.<br />

‘‘Therivercarnival makes<br />

sensegiven the town’s<br />

connection to the river,but it<br />

runs on ashoestring budget,<br />

so it’sfor the towntodecide<br />

what theywant it to be.’’<br />

The association will hold<br />

another workshop for local<br />

businessesinMarch,whereit<br />

is hopedsome workinggroups<br />

will be established to further<br />

develop aKaiapoi brand<br />

concept.<br />

‘‘It’s time to do somereal<br />

work.Wehave done enough<br />

talking,’’hesays.‘‘It takes<br />

threetofive years to developa<br />

brandand we are in year<br />

threethis year, so it’s time to<br />

consolidateand see the return<br />

on the effort we have put in<br />

and drive it further.’’<br />

He would like to see some<br />

co­ordination around shop<br />

opening hours, especially<br />

given thegrowing number of<br />

weekend visitors,which is<br />

likelytoincrease when cycleway<br />

connections to Christchurchopen<br />

laterthis year.<br />

‘‘If we want to be boutiquey,<br />

peoplewant to do boutique<br />

shopping at the weekend. The<br />

case in point beingOxford.’’<br />

He saysthe association’s<br />

reach extends to Woodend,<br />

Pegasus, Waikuku, The Pines<br />

and Kairaki. It is keen to<br />

encouragebusinessesinthose<br />

areas to get involved and be<br />

part of developing the brand.<br />

It is alsolooking to organise<br />

September events with<br />

various partners,including<br />

ethnicgroups, to reflect the<br />

town’sgrowing cultural<br />

diversity, adecade after the<br />

2010 earthquake series.<br />

‘‘The earthquake won’t be<br />

mentioned.Itwill be about<br />

how we have movedon. This<br />

is where we wereand this is<br />

where we are now.<br />

‘‘Our demographicshave<br />

changed rapidly in termsof<br />

ethnicity, so the eventswill<br />

reflect that. We are allabout<br />

inclusiveness.’’<br />

He saysthe associationhas<br />

also taken the initiativeto<br />

explore the feasibilityofa<br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>New Year’s<br />

Eve event.<br />
