Growth still ahead of pre-quake levels<br />

Growth is continuinginthe<br />

Waimakariri district.<br />

Mayor DanGordon saysthe<br />

district’s population<br />

experienced rapid growthafter<br />

the earthquakesand, whilethat<br />

growth haseased,development<br />

remains aheadofpre­quake<br />

levels.<br />

The residential population is<br />

expected to reach 75,000 by 2028.<br />

Lastyear, 641consentswere<br />

issued by thecouncilfor new<br />

houses—the second lowest<br />

number since2011 buthigher<br />

thanany pre­quakeyear.<br />

Woodend led the way with161<br />

consents fornew houses,thanks<br />

to the growth of the Ravenswood<br />

subdivision,followed by<br />

Rangiora with 139consentsand<br />

Pegasus with 127.<br />

There were91consentsfor<br />

new houses in rural areas,76<br />

consents were issued in Kaiapoi,<br />

31 in ruralresidential 4zones<br />

and just eighteachfor Oxford<br />

and small towns or beach<br />

settlements.<br />

‘‘Because of thisgrowth the<br />

council has had to be prepared<br />

for higherdemandonour<br />

servicesand this hasmeant<br />

balancingaffordabilitywith<br />

planning,and cateringtoa<br />

growingpopulation,’’ Mr Gordon<br />

says.<br />

Waimakariri’sregulation<br />

manager,Nick Harrison,says<br />

there willbeplentyof<br />

commercial building activity in<br />

the district overthe next12<br />

months.<br />

The consentfor thenew<br />

Ravenswood New Worldwas<br />

approved last yearand<br />

constructionisexpected to begin<br />

soon.<br />

stationisalsoplanned for<br />

Ravenswood.<br />

Southbrookbusinessowner<br />

DanielSmith has several<br />

projects under way, with<br />

earthworksbeing done on afourhectaresitefor<br />

aproposed<br />

automotive museum and<br />

associated retailarea.<br />

Extensions arealso being<br />

madeonthe SouthernCross<br />

Road/Kingsford Drive corner.<br />

Mr Smith sayshehopes to<br />

announce moredetails on his<br />

projects soon.<br />

MatauruPrimary School on the<br />

corner of Pentecost andJohns<br />

Roads is duetoopenintwo<br />

weeks.<br />

In Kaiapoi, anew commercial<br />

building on the westcorner of<br />

Williamsand CharlesStreets,<br />

next to Riverside Community<br />

Church, is duetoopenlater this<br />

year. Corcoran French Lawyers<br />

will occupy the firstfloor and<br />

retailspace is availablefor lease<br />

on the ground floor.<br />

Work continues on the new<br />

Waimakariri multi­use sports<br />

facility on Coldstream Road,<br />

Rangiora, due to openinMay<br />

2021.<br />
