Johnny Cash is an icon in the music
world. His reputation converges
connections with Country, Rock, and
gospel music in which he developed
within his own style. He was born to
a sharecropper family in Arkansas in
1932. His early life included hardship
and tragedy. The poverty experienced by
the family was exaggerated by the death
of his older brother of whom he was
close to, in 1944, in a sawmill accident.
His music lyrics contained aspects of
sorrow, personal suffering, and personal
salvation.
His mother taught him to play guitar at
a young age. His early prepuberty voice
changed to a deep baritone. He was
featured on some local radio stations
in Arkansas in his teen years where his
local reputation started to develop. He
enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950
where he spent most of his enlistment in
Germany. While in Germany he started a
band called "The Landsberg Barbarians"
After an honorable discharge from
the Air Force in 1954, he returned to
Tennessee where he studied to be a radio
announcer while still performing at
night clubs in off-hours. He eventually
signed with the record company Sun
Records in Nashville. The first songs
that gained him notoriety were, "Cry,
Cry, Cry", and "Hey Porter" During the
following 3 years he recorded: Folsom
Prison Blues", and, "I Walk The Line"
In 1958 He was signed with Columbia
Records after which his " Don't Take
Your Guns To Town", was one of the best
selling records of his career.
Johnny Cash, in addition to being a
vocalist and a musician, made statements
with his music and his clothing. He
became known as the man who wore
black. He was aware of the hard life
of struggling people from his early
childhood experience. He also became
aware of the plight of Native Americans
and the Trail of Tears story. He
performed concerts at Native American
rallies and gave proceeds to their
