WESTERN NEWS Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Tuesday January 28 2020 3 News Police: Hornby won’t be impacted by stronger presence in Hoon Hay • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CONCERN IS brewing over access to the Hornby Police Station in the community. But police are assuring staff numbers at the station and coverage of the area has not changed. It is after increasing numbers of police from Hornby have been patrolling Hoon Hay since Christmas time, which has led to less youth disorder. Sergeant David Knowles and Marc Duff four officers are now regularly patrolling the streets of Hoon Hay. The intention is to work to the demand rather than a specific number of hours he said. But questions have been raised over how this could impact police coverage in the Hornby area. The concern stems from a “perception” in the community the police station is not open as much as it used to be. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER Association chairman Marc Duff said he has heard comments about the police station not being open often enough. “The feedback we are receiving is there is a perception the police station is not as manned or in operation as much as it used to be.” He said about the middle of last year he had heard residents had tried to go in to make a complaint but it was closed. Mr Duff said he had not heard any complaints since earlier this month when a resident attempted to call the station but there was no answer. The station’s office hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm. Mr Duff said it would be a concern if police were spending more time in Hoon Hay if it is having an impact on local community service. But Sergeant Knowles assured the number of staff covering Hornby has not changed since he arrived in January last year. “They are still covering the greater area and are responding to their daily jobs.” The Hornby Police Station has 28 staff members. Sergeant Knowles said there could be a host of reasons for the front counter not being staffed. “The officer may be tied up because he is taking a statement that could be in-depth and take some time or he may be dealing with something of a personal nature and they can’t let anyone else in.” Sergeant John Moody, who is in charge of front of counter staff, said with the limited resources police have, it could not justify a second front of counter staff member. It was scheduled on Sunday for the GHRA to discuss the implementation of increasing neighbourhood support groups in the Hornby area. In Brief CATERING BUDGET The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board has got its catering budget figures wrong. Earlier this month, Western News was told by board chairman Mike Mora, Helen Broughton and city councillor Catherine Chu the catering budget will remain the same – at $85 a meeting following an informal meeting. But city council’s John Filsell said the cost is about $68 – about a $10 reduction from the end of the previous term. Community board chairman Mike Mora said he couldn’t answer why the figures had now gone down to $68. In 2018 the budget was $174. Miss Chu and Mrs Broughton were unable to respond. PETITION AGAINST PLANT A petition has been started to fight a proposal by Waste Management to operate a treatment and stabilisation plant at 305 Marshs Rd in Hornby South. The proposal includes an open-air tyre-shredding machine and facilities to process solvents, heavy metals, petrochemicals and septic waste.
