May brothers impress
at North Island champs
• By Jacob Page
BROTHERS ZACH and Seb
May were able to turn heads at
the North Island age-group golf
championships.
Zach, 17, finished runner-up
in the under-19 field at the
Hamilton Golf Club, while
Seb, 14, managed third in the
under-16 category.
Zach said the result was reward
for the work he had done
on his game after a challenging
2019.
He was the co-leader heading
into the final round but could
not hold-off Miramar’s Sam
Masters in the final round.
Zach finished at +3, two shots
behind Sam.
“I was pleased with the week I
had, last year was tough for me,
the first six months was a struggle
with the way I was playing
and I worked really hard at it so
it’s nice to see the results coming
from that,” he said.
“My driving off the tee was
my issue, it became a mental
thing for me, I could go out
onto the driving range and hit
quality drives time-after-time
but then I’d play a round and it
would all fall apart – I’d get the
yips really.
“The positive thing is that my
short game has got better because
I’ve become used to playing
in positions on the course
that are tricky,” he said.
Seb was the outright leader
heading into the final round of
the under-16 tournament before
a 77 saw him finish at +7, eight
shots behind the winner, Ryan
Rooney from Fielding.
“I thought it was a pretty good
week against some tough golfers,”
he said.
“I haven’t played much in the
North Island because I have had
a wrist injury but it was good to
get the opportunity and backing
my ability.”
champs in
Hamilton.
Neither of their parents
played golf but they Zach was
taken to Russley’s junior golf
clinics at the age of five and Seb
followed.
Their sister, Maddie, 15, also
plays golf and has represented
Canterbury.
Zach said his next focus
would be the Canterbury
strokeplay this weekend at
Harewood Golf Club then the
South Island strokeplay in Dunedin
in a fortnight.
Seb will switch his focus to
cricket for the short-term.
SOFTBALLER Jacob Davidson is
the lone Canterbury face named
in the Junior Black Sox squad for
next month’s under-18 World
Cup to be held in Palmerston
North.
The 16-year-old, who
lives in Hornby and
plays as a catcher and
outfielder for Halswell,
said he was surprised by
the call-up.
“There’s been a lot of
work that has gone in
behind the scenes so to
make it in this team for
the first time is great.”
The event begins on
February 22, with the Junior
Black Sox opening the tournament
against Japan, the silver
medallist at the last World Cup.
The final will be played on
March 1.
Jacob is also a national representative
in baseball as a pitcher,
he says juggling both sports has
mostly a positive impact on his
play.
“When I’m catching (in
softball) I’m still working with
the pitchers on calling a game
and working out what pitches
to throw, just like I would be if I
was pitching in baseball.
“It does mean I don’t get
Jacob focuses on softball on
Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
and switches to baseball for
his Selwyn club on a Thursday
and Sunday.
Twelve teams from around the
world will compete in the
week-long World Cup
event.
Fellow Cantabrians
Hunter Simpson and
Kotiti Patea will be nontravelling
reserves.
Coach Thomas Makea
said he was excited by the
talent on show.
Jacob “We have set goals and
Davidson observed these athletes
over the past 12 months,
which culminated at the justcompleted
under-18 nationals.
“They displayed their skills, but
also a lot of enthusiasm, passion
and intensity to their games,
which is something that the
management team was pleased
to see.
“We have selected a wellbalanced
squad with a lot of
these players able to play multiple
positions which helps in the
make-up of the defence. The
team will be working hard over
the next few weeks so they are
well prepared to take on the
world.”
New shoe shop offers even more
‘fashionable, functional footwear’
Newly opened, the Shoe Room in Riccarton Road,
just across from the Bush Inn Centre, offers an
extensive range of specialised footwear for people
that have foot problems, difficulty finding shoes or are
simply looking for stylish, comfortable shoes.
This bright, modern and attractively laid out store is
owned by podiatrist Charlotte Russell, who also owns
and operates the podiatry clinic Feet First in Upper
Riccarton. The Shoe Room was previously part of the
clinic, but increasing demand for “fashionable, functional
footwear” meant they needed to expand, Charlotte says.
As a stand-alone store with much more space, the
Shoe Room is able to offer an extended range of brands
and styles to accommodate feet requiring specific
features, such as wider, deeper or more narrow fitting
and for those who are on their feet all day.
The Shoe Room Shop assistant Wendy, left,
business owner Charlotte Russell, centre,
and shop manager Maxine.
At present, the majority are women’s shoes, but the
men’s range will be expanded with the arrival of the
winter season collection, Charlotte says.
Brands on display include Mephisto from France,
which is exclusive to the Shoe Room in New Zealand,
Australian brands Frankie 4, Revere and Propet, and
Taos from the United States.
The shop has been thoughtfully designed with seating
and large mirrors to the side of the display areas, so
customers have plenty of space to try shoes on and
walk around in them. Shop manager Maxine and shop
assistant Wendy both have extensive experience in
footwear, so can assist and advise customers on the
best fit and style to suit their needs.
“This is a point of difference for the Shoe Room –
having people who know about shoe fitting to help our
customers,” Charlotte says. “We will also be having a
