Christmas has come and gone, andyour poinsettia plants and flowers havereached their zenith and floweringglory decorating your tables and livingroom spaces. And now a few weeksinto and past their prime, you mightbe wondering what to do with yourpoinsettia plants. Most of them get theboot and end up in the waste patch orout on the street. You can however, witha little care, keep your plant and prepareit for the next winter holiday season.How you ask? Gardener MichaelMcGroarty has some great tips asto how to extend the life of yourpoinsettias.• Keep your plant in a non-drafty areaof your home, and water only whenthe soil is dry. They do not like to bewaterlogged.• After your plant has completedflowering, you may fertilize it twice amonth until the spring.• Cut your plant back to about fourinches in April; new growth typicallyappears in May.• When it is warmer outside, youcan keep your poinsettia outdoors.Transplant into a slightly biggerpot with well-draining pottingsoil, and place in bright indirectlight. Continue to fertilize twice amonth through the summer untilmid-December.
