Always soulful. Never static.

The new Taycan has arrived at Park Place. It’s the first all-electric Porsche ever

produced—and a high-performance sports car through and through. With two

permanent-magnet synchronous motors generating up to 750 hp and acceleration

faster than a skydiver in free fall. Plus, an 800-volt battery that can be partially recharged

to add up to 62 miles of range in just over five minutes. And this uncompromising

Porsche comes equipped with a uniquely personal dealership experience.

That’s what makes Park Place feel like Your Place.

What a way to start off 2020 . . . as Region Secretary!

If you had asked me a year ago what my club involvement

would look like now, my response would have been that it

surely would not have been a board position!

I purchased my ‘07 Midnight Blue Boxster I call “Indie”

a couple of years ago on a whim - literally. I saw, I drove,

I bought . . . all on the same day. I had never owned a

Porsche before, or knew anything about them for that

matter. I was scrolling through a Facebook page where a

friend of a friend listed it for sale. I scrolled past it, then

back to it several times, falling in love with the beautiful

lines with each view. I took the car out for a test drive and

knew I had to have that beauty in my garage.

It wasn’t until about a year later that I discovered there

was a local Porsche club that held events. My first event

I attended was the Porsche Promenade at Brookhaven

Country Club in 2018. I had such a great time that day .

. . I was hooked! I began attending Mavs & Mochas on a

regular basis while forming friendships along the way.

I made it official and joined PCA a few months later,

and in March 2019 I attended the Tour and All Member

Party. It was my first organized drive and I had a blast! The

Maverick Region received multiple awards that morning,

one of which was the Membership Growth Award for

2018. I looked around the room at some already familiar

faces and some new ones, too, and felt very proud to be

a part of such a wonderful and dedicated organization. I

MAV OF THE MONTH:

Scott Kerfoot

am looking forward to the 2020 All Member Party again

this year on March 22. In 2019, our region’s membership

increased by nearly 180 new members, so there will be

something to celebrate! Mark your calendars: registration

for this event opens February 1. Please encourage any new

member you may know to attend.

So. Now I’m on the Executive Board for the Maverick

Region. In just a little over a year from my very first event;

you can say I have jumped in with both feet. I am proud to

be serving with others on the board who have experience,

dedication and the love of Porsches and the people who

drive them. And remember, if you need anything - anything

at all - just ask the President. ;)

Scott has been a member with the PCA for close to five years. Often, when you

see him at one of our many events or a Porsche Pop-Up, you’ll notice he’s always

dressed to match the beautiful color of his Carmon Red 996 GT3. Scott is always

willing to help out when ever needed. Most recently he has provided his ideas and

skills to help simplify the voting for our People’s Choice Car Shows. Scott already

has more ideas about how to bring information and voting to our fingertips with

digital apps on our smartphones. Scott is full of knowledge and willing to share

when it comes to turning wrenches on our Porsches. Scott is just one example of how

our club stays “Fueled by Volunteers.” Please join me in Congratulating Scott as our

Maverick of the Month.

You’re Invited: 2020 All Member Party

By Debi Kruder, Region Social Chair

Over 350 Mavericks drove at least 40 miles for last

year’s “Alle Mitglieder,” our annual All Member social,

to get to what proved to be well worth the drive for

an amazing All Member Morning: two events for over

3000 members! That event last year boasted the largest

annual social event in Maverick history, with a record

number of participants. With a turnout like that how

could we not do a repeat?

That’s right Mavs . . . our All Member Morning is

Sunday, March 22, thanks to our sponsor Autobahn,

and it will not disappoint!

The morning kicks off with the first driving tour of

the year, consisting of 45 miles of pure country bliss.

Enjoy the cattle ranches and horse farms among the

roar of more than 100 engines while traveling through

the towns of Van Alstyne, Weston, Celina, Pilot Point,

Tioga, and finally arriving to our destination Gunter,

photos by Michael Durovick

Porsche flags will line the drive and our Maverick

volunteers will greet you to assist in parking. As you

walk around the circle drive you will see the gorgeous

fountain and enter the barn door, immediately smelling

a most delicious country breakfast bar, including eggs,

smoked applewood bacon, sausage patties, breakfast

potatoes, and fresh seasonal fruit.

What was last year’s crowd favorite? The Southern

Biscuit Bar, and we’ve made sure to double our order of

the warm biscuits, buttermilk fried chicken, and all the

toppings! Mingle, eat, and enjoy the Bubbly Bar and

Bloody Marys as we welcome our new members too!

Nearly a third in attendance last year were new members,

and it’s the perfect place to meet and get connected with

club opportunities. Our Maverick officers and chair

representatives will be on site to showcase the 2020

events we are so excited about. Rumor has it our new

President, Bill Kruder, will also be introducing a new

Maverick award Crest Club that’s sure to make the All

Member Morning extra special too!

TX. The tour begins at 10 am, departing Van Alystne

on the beloved FM 455, with a registration fee of $5

per Porsche.

And what waits in Gunter, TX? Well, the 2020 All

Member Brunch begins at 11 am at One Preston Event

Center Carriage House, Chapel, and Victorian Estate. The

property will leave you speechless. It’s a gorgeous space with

vaulted ceilings, large windows, and barn doors overlooking

acres of lush landscaping with great patios and the largest

number of Porsches you are sure to see in one place!

So, do you want to spend March 22 with nearly 350

Mavericks on a casual country morning at one of the

most talked about events of 2020? Registration opens

Saturday, February 1. Take advantage of the early

registration discount of $25 per person (tour & brunch)

by registering this month. Registration increases after

March 1.

registration discount codes available; email socials@

A Brief History of The MineralRing

by Carey Spreen, related to him by Bob Manskey

The year 2019 marked the end of an era for the Maverick

Region Time Trial and Autocross series. As of January 1,

2020, the large concrete pad next to Mineral Wells Airport,

affectionately known as The MineralRing, was closed to

motorsports use. Anyone who participated in our Time

Trial or Autocross series as far back as 1987 certainly has

memories of the facility.

The beginnings of site came about in September 1956,

when nearby Fort Wolters was returned to the US Army

(after its use during World War II as

an Air Force base) to house the United

States Army Primary Helicopter

School. This school was to consist

of three heliports: the main heliport

at Fort Wolters, just east of Mineral

Wells, and eventually two more, built

later as the base expanded.

In 1957, there were only 12

helicopters in the training fleet. In

1965, that number was increased to

400, then to 775 a year later, and finally

to 1,058 in 1967. To accommodate

this increase, Downing AHP was

built in 1966, and contained spaces

for about 300 helicopters, along with

a 64,000 square foot maintenance

hangar, briefing rooms, fire station,

administrative offices, and control

tower. The facility totaled 97 acres,

which the Army leased from the City

of Mineral Wells for the princely sum

of one dollar per year. The base was

deactivated in 1973, after which it

sat, dormant and unused, next to the airport.

Jump ahead to 1986, when Maverick Region was

looking for a new venue for its Time Trial series. From 1984

through 1986, we had used the now-defunct Green Valley

Raceway, formerly located in Smithfield/North Richland

Hills, as our Time Trial track. When we were advised of its

impending closure, we went on the hunt for a replacement.

As luck would have it, Maverick Region member and

Time Trialer Bob Manskey lived in Mineral Wells and knew

about the unused Downing AHP facility. Bob contacted the

city manager and shortly came to a handshake agreement

that allowed Bob (and Maverick Region) free use of the site.

For the first four years (1987 – 1990), Maverick Region

had exclusive use of the grounds, which hosted our Time

Trial series, as well as the occasional autocross. The

moniker “MineralRing” was soon coined, although the

name of the person who came up with it is lost to history.

Early on, the Mineral Wells Volunteer Fire Department

began selling concessions at the venue, and they soon were

able to purchase their first jaws-of-life using the proceeds.

Maverick Region laid out three to four “permanent”

time trial courses, which we rotated through during each

year for variety. Because the site is just one big slab of

concrete, the courses were marked with traffic cones,

whose locations were painted on the concrete to make

each course repeatable. Interestingly, only PCA used

these time trial courses; when it was opened up to other

clubs, they set up their own short

temporary courses.

When the city manager retired

in 1990, his replacement wanted

to make the use of the facility a

business deal, so, beginning in 1991,

Bob leased the site for $1750 per

year, opening it up to any car club

in the area that wanted to use it.

This included PCA, SCCA, Equipe

Rapide, a couple of Corvette clubs,

the Honda S2000 club , and the

BMW club. Maintaining the site

mainly consisted of making portable

toilets available and keeping the

facility clean. Local hotels and

restaurants saw a significant uptick

in business; at one point, the Mineral

Wells Chamber of Commerce

estimated that the MineralRing

brought in almost $1 million per

year. Maverick Region also hosted

Top: Downing AHP circa 1970

many annual Charity Autocrosses at

Bottom: Newspaper article from ?

the site, with proceeds benefiting the

Hope Shelter, now known as the Huffaker-Hughes Hope

House, which is based in Mineral Wells.

For years the site was available seven days a week. Some

well-known names occasionally rented the facility for

weekday testing were Johnny Rutherford, Andy Pilgrim,

and Trans Am racer Lou Gigliotti (who is currently

building the LG Motorsports track in Collin County).

In addition, vintage racecar owners brought such cars

as a Cosworth-powered John Wyer Gulf Mirage, a Ford

GT40 (which Bob got to drive), and a race-prepared 427

Shelby Cobra to the site. When George W. Bush owned

the Texas Rangers baseball team, he held a few “customer

appreciation” days at the MineralRing.

There were only a couple of rules that Bob had

to enforce: no wheel-to-wheel racing (time trials and

autocross are of course against-the-clock, not wheel-towheel

events), and no motorcycles. The mainstream car

clubs did things by the book: they insured their events,

did tech inspections, and generally ran safe events. In

contrast, there were the “drift clubs,” which had little to

no organization, no one responsible, and no safety-related

rules, which was a show-stopper for Bob. Early on, Bob

had allowed one motorcycle group to use the facility;

one rider fell, breaking an arm, and when they left, they

didn’t pay for the rental. That set the tone for the “no

motorcycle” rule: from that point on, only four-wheeled

vehicles were allowed. Incidentally, that broken arm was

the only injury ever sustained there during a driving event.

Over the years, the city tried to take back portions

of the site, claiming that they had requests from local

businesses to pay for the use of the area. Over the years,

the original site shrank, forcing the reconfiguration of

the fencing, but the car clubs still kept coming, so Bob

kept renting. Around 2011, the city restricted use of

the site to just weekends, plus the occasional Friday on

special request.

Finally, in 2019, the city gave Bob the fateful news

that they would be terminating the lease and taking back

the site to build additional hangars. With no recourse,

Bob had no choice but to relinquish control of the site,

contacting all of the car clubs that had asked for 2020

dates to let them know that the site would no longer be

available as of January 1, 2020.

Farewell MineralRing, and thank you Bob Manskey

for keeping it available to us for the last 32 years!

the most out of retirement.

Tech Session Recap: Werks 11

by Rob Adams

photos provided by Author

It doesn’t take much to persuade a gaggle of Mavericks

to gather for a road trip, and that certainly proved to be true

in mid-November, when over a dozen members attended a

After a robust tech and Q&A session, the members of

both regions traveled a few minutes further south to Salado,

where we were hosted by the Stagecoach Inn. Famous for

remote tech session at Werks 11 in Temple, TX. At about

10 am, the sleepy streets of downtown Temple erupted with

the raspy exhaust of Porsches arriving from all directions,

including PCA members from the Hill Country Region.

Michael Baynton and Charlie Sparks coordinated the

adventure to attend a workshop conducted by Army veteran

Julian Avent and his Werks 11 crew.

If you don’t already know about Werks 11,

Julian started repairing, restoring, and custombuilding

Porsches shortly after he got out of the

armed services several years ago.

He chose Temple for its charm and cost of living, but later

realized it was perfectly located between the major metro

areas of Dallas, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio, all of

which feature a large number of Porsche owners.

A stroll through the shop excites any gearhead’s senses,

and especially Porsche owners. From a collection of

racing 914s to 912s to air-cooled 911s, there’s eye candy

everywhere. My favorite toy was the slate grey “outlaw” he

And not surprisingly, Werks 11 does almost all of the work

in-house. If you haven’t seen their craftsmanship, be sure to

view the videos at Werks11.com.

But it wasn’t just a showroom tour. The tech session

was very informative, providing an education of what to

watch out for when buying an older Porsche, with plenty of

examples in the shop. Julian also talked about some of the

more common modifications that Porsche owners request,

and what factors to consider when upgrading your air- or

water-cooled Porsche.

being the oldest restaurant in Texas, it provides some of

Temple’s finest cuisine.

What a great day for a road trip to a truly fascinating

destination!

In other words...

I had the chance to take the trip down to Temple

with the group and thoroughly enjoyed the drive, the

conversation, the Q&A and the back lot. While we were

looking at the rusted shell of a donor car, something

caught my eye. Something VERY 80’s. As a kid I loved

the factory cars, but something about the shear excess

of the tuner cars held my fascination. Well, here in the

back with all of the other unloved ‘projects’ sat what

appears to be a Rinspeed R69, pictured below. Rinspeed

isn’t exactly reserved and this car is no exception.

Remember that these things sold for $79,000, in 1985!

Based on a 911 turbo, the interior was a thing to behold.

I don’t know what their plans are for the car, but if

you’ve ever wanted a Testarossa AND and an aircooled

911, give Julian a call, I’m sure you can work out a deal.

Porsche Tire Scrubbing

by John Hamilton

photos provided by Paul Moseley

Have you noticed that your Porsche’s front end makes a “chunk – chunk – chunk” noise especially now in colder

weather? Especially while turning when backing up or going forward slowly. Happy to report: this is perfectly normal

in a Porsche (whew!).

Here are the causes:

1. Cold tires. When tires are cold they are less-flexible and therefore more prone to make that noise as they try to

navigate a turn while driving slowly.

2. Wide tires are more prone to the scrubbing effect. Since the inside and outside of the tires have a different radius

while turning, the tire tries to compromise by jumping to make up the difference.

3. Under-inflated tires. While properly inflated tires will still

scrub when cold, they are less apt to scrub if inflated to the

proper pressure.

4. Front-end design. Porsche front steering is ingeniously designed

to reduce the turning radius by not only turning the wheels, but

by also angling the wheels as is done on farm tractors, road

maintainers and road levelers. The benefit is a smaller turning

radius at all times (not only when the tires are cold).

That’s it! Now you know the answer to what’s been bothering you.

And you don’t have to pay for getting anything “fixed” on you Porsche.

Drive on!

Maverick Marktpreis is proudly sponsored by:

Maverick Marktpreis: 964 RS America

by Peter Wen

The RS badge has always had a special meaning

for Porschephiles. It stands for “Rennsport,” which

is “racing” in German. The term RS is a huge part of

Porsche’s racing heritage. To commemorate the 20th

anniversary of the iconic 1973 Carrera RS, Porsche

gifted us the RS America (RSA) in 1993.

With only 701 examples produced between 1993

and 1994, this special edition was only available in

North America. Based on the Carrera 2 coupe, the RSA

was all about light weight (and performance). It went

on a strict diet and shed 77 lbs. It offered a minimalist

interior with no power steering, no door pulls, no radio

and no A/C. Only four options were offered: electric

sunroof, Limited Slip Differential, radio/cassette stereo,

and A/C. The rear seats were removed for the 1993

model year but returned in 1994. With so many parts

removed, Porsche actually priced the RSA $10,000

below a fully equipped Carrera 2. That was the last

time Porsche Marketing made that mistake!

Today, RSA is a bona fide Porsche collectible. It is

worth two and a half to three times the cost of a mere

mortal 964. However, as the market has gone soft on

most air-cooled Porsches, the value of an averagecondition

RSA has declined more than 15% since

2017. An excellent-condition RSA fared better with a

6% decline.

Coffee, Cars & Conversation

by Bill Kruder

photos provided by author

Well this one was fun! Not often

you get to meet three for the price

of one. The first time we met was

kind of early in the Mavs & Mochas

days when we would get 50-75 cars

and we could fit into a venue the

likes of Snider Plaza in University

Park. It also was a rare appearance

of our daughter Carson attending.

As it turned out, we struck up the

conversation that she was attending

MSU, and next thing you know it

was a connection. As time went on, it

was more often than not that, if you

saw this dad out, his posse of two was

close behind. You may even know

the boys even if you don’t know dad.

The boys are always helping us out,

directing traffic at a M&M, writing

for the magazine, or checking you in

at the Founders Day party.

So here is the next in my series of

“conversations” I would like to share

with you . . .

Landon, Corbin, and Brady Stogner:

Members since 2016,

Owner, Black 2010 997.2 Cab

Bill Kruder: So I know you are not

originally from here; where again?

Landon Stogner: I’m a Texan born and

raised in Wichita Falls; it’s about two

hours northwest of Dallas. Actually

I’m a third generation Wichita Fallian;

never strayed t0o far, having attended

grammar school through college in

basically the same city. Matter of fact

I graduated from the same high school,

Rider H.S., as my dad and aunt (his

sister). My mom graduated from the

crosstown rival (Wichita Falls High).

BK: So you went to Midwestern State

University? Our two girls are graduates.

LS: I did! I started at Vernon College

then transferred to MSU. I started out

thinking I wanted to be a business

major until I took a basic computer

class and I couldn’t get enough. I

quickly changed my focus and went

into Computer Info Systems.

20 February

BK: So what brought you to DFW?

LS: That’s where the jobs seem to be.

I was hired by AT&T in the Wireless

Division and was with them for

two years. Then the industry seem

be imploding, with so many being

condensed or gobbled up. As it turned

out, I was caught up in a reduction in

force and was out of work for about six

months. Well, I say out of work, but I

ended up getting a job doing field work;

that is, I was the guy that had to climb

Landon with his boys, Corbin and Brady

ladders and did the home and small/

medium business installs.

BK: So this led you to your Verizon

career?

LS: It did. About six months after losing

my AT&T job I was hired by Verizon

Wireless and 18 years later I’m still there.

BK: And what is that you do again?

LS: Well I’m on the technical side of the

business. I work on the transport design

for what connects between the cell

tower and the data switching center.

BK: Ok Dad - sit back. I need talk to

these two young guys. Corbin you first,

how old are you?

Corbin Stogner: I’m 13 and in 8th grade.

Brady Stogner: I’m 11 and in 6th grade.

BK: What’s your favorite subject?

CS: That would be history.

BS: I like English. We read and research

subjects then have to write recaps.

BK: So Corbin I understand you are

interested in theater?

CS: I am. I started when I was in about

3rd grade; there is this program called

“Little Bit of Broadway” for kids in

grades 3-5. I think that helped me get

the lead roles in our school’s UIL One-

Act Competition play.

BK: Corbin, I hear you are pretty

involved at school too?

CS: I guess so. I’m the 8th grade sports

manager for our school and I assist

each of the coaches. I also work as a

student aid in the school library.

BK: So Brady I hear you play sports?

BS: Yes, I play spring soccer and fall

football through the Flower Mound

Sports Association. Next year I can

start playing on the school teams. You

have to be in 7th grade to do that.

BK: Ok, we know what your dad’s

favorite car is. How about you two?

CS: It would have to be a Mustang or

a Tesla model X; my ultimate car is

the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon.

BS: Mine is a Mustang Bullitt.

BK: So dad, what was your first car?

LS: Ha! It was a 1986 Ford Ranger pickup

my dad found in the newspaper. It

had no paint on the hood and it was

just nasty on the inside. That didn’t

deter me though. Overtime I kind of

restored it and when I was done I sold

it for more than we paid.

BK: So you have a knack for cars.

Where’s that come from?

LS: Well both my dad and grandfather

were pretty hands-on with cars and

I was there lending a hand, holding

the shop light and passing wrenches,

helping change the oil, what ever they

needed help with.

BK: So Landon, why a Porsche?

LS: It goes back to when I was nine

years old. I remember saving up and

bought an ‘88 911 slant-nose model to

build. Then there was the movie Risky

Business with the infamous 928 and

U-boat commander that forever stuck

with me. My dream was the 993 Turbo

which happened to line up with me

becoming driving age. I still have the

framed poster hanging on my wall in

my home office.

BK: And what made you buy the cab?

LS: Well I wasn’t looking for cab. I had

done some research and knew I wanted

a 997 based on my budget. I looked

at two or three others before finding

this one thru Carlink. They had this

California car I inquired about online,

and once they discovered I was local

they said to come over and see it. I got

there and they basically tossed me the

keys and said to take it out and let them

know what I thought. So I did, top

down, wind in my hair (laughing), and

I was hooked on a cab. It took us two

to three days to agree on the price but

that’s history. There were 70k miles on

the car and it recently has become my

daily driver so now I’m pushing 116k

miles with no issues.

BK: Back to the boys. Dad, if you had

to describe their personalities in a word

using only coffee or cars, who’s what?

LS: That’s pretty easy! Corbin is Coffee

and Brady is Cars (and with smiles

across the table the boys concur he

passed the test.)

BK: So Corbin I hear you have big plans?

CS: Well kind of. I want to go to SMU

and get two degrees, one being math.

After college I want to go to culinary

school and open my own business. It

would be a bakery that would be open

in the mornings and then reopen later

for lunch and dinner.

BK: Brady what would you say would

be your favorite Maverick moment?

BS: I think that would be when Debi

(our Social Chair) asked me to write

something on last years All Member

Party. Now that was pretty cool!

BK: and Corbin?

CS: That would be the M&M at

the Frisco Rail Yard. The three of

us along with Robert Kendrick

helped direct traffic. It also when

I really got to know Mike O’Hare

(interesting lol).

BK: So Brady, I hear you are a bit of

car collector?

BS: It’s true. I have over 200 Hot

Wheels. It’s a bit of everything but my

favorite is the yellow 996 cab.

So I know what you are thinking. I’m

going to say as I do every month as I

write the interview: what if . . . ? What

if I had not met Landon and the boys?

What if I had not had the chance to get

to know Landon and recommend him

to be our current Volunteer Chair?

So yes, I will say it again. If and when

you meet someone new, someone old,

don’t miss out on “Driving

Friendships!”

My First Porsche

by Jerry DeFeo

(From the editor: This article was first

published in the February 2000 issue of

Slipstream Tom Martin brought to my

attention as a great blast from the past.

Tom provided additional editing to the

original story)

It was the fall of 1966 in

Miami, Florida. I was 20 years old,

attending junior college, trying to

keep out of trouble with my Mom,

and raising $91.20 a month to pay

for my ‘65 Pontiac GTO, equipped

with three deuces and a four-speed.

I had noticed a few Porsches here

and there, but in 1966, no street

Porsche could stay with my GTO.

Of course, that referred to quarter

mile runs with my circle of friends.

One of the neatest Porsches I saw

was a ‘63 356B Super 90 convertible

that Skip Ryder (yes, daddy owned

Ryder Trucks) had rolled while

he was still in high school. Well, I

had a job that summer at the body

shop where he had it repaired. Not

only did I get to work on it, I got

to take it out for the test drive. Boy

did I catch hell when I got back 30

minutes later. They did not buy my

reason that I needed to make sure

it handled OK at high speeds. After

all, it had been rolled! But it handled

like a go-kart with a four-speed,

and I was hooked. The shop also

had a ‘63 Jaguar XKE convertible

I had to final test drive about two

weeks later.

Anyway, a friend told me about

a red Porsche he had seen one

morning on the used car lot at a

North Miami Ford dealership.

I went up there and a salesman

showed it to me saying that they just

took it in on trade, and apologized

for not having it cleaned up yet. It

was a faded bright red color and

had a so-so black interior. It also

had some rust (this was Miami

by the sea, you know, salt water

in the air) and in fact every time

one opened the driver’s door, the

26 February

bottom three inches of the door

would catch on the body and slide

outside the fender towards the

front wheel. But I had worked for

a body shop - that was when you

could get a reasonable paint job for

$50 - and besides, I had all the time

in the world. The salesman at the

dealership asked if I was 21 (you

had to be 21 to buy a car in Florida

back then), to which I promptly

lied and said “yes”! He was really a

nice guy and was so anxious to sell

a car that day; he offered it to me

for $650 and even said he would

give me a 30-day 50/50 warranty

if anything went wrong. Well the

clutch was already slipping just a

shade so I took the deal. I put down

$5 (yes - FIVE dollars) to hold the

car until I could go get the money

and return. I had some of it and had

to borrow $300 from a friend’s dad

(that is another story).

I returned to the dealer with

the cash and took it to a known

Porsche mechanic in South Miami.

He and I had met before when

I raced against a ’66 427 Cobra

that he had prepared, and beat it

with my ‘65 GTO (also another

story). Anyway, he said that the

car needed a new pressure plate,

clutch disc, throw-out bearing, all

the brake cylinders rebuilt (I did

not know that any cars had two

brake cylinders per wheel), tuneup,

shift linkage bushings, wheel

bearings repacked, and an oil and

filter change. The total: some $355.

(That kind of looks pretty good

today, huh? What do you think, Ed

Mayo?) Well, the Used Car Sales

Manager at the Ford dealer was

not a happy camper. They gave the

original owner $600 as a tradein,

sold me the car for $650, and

then wrote a check to the garage

I selected (since they had no idea

how to work on it) for some $178

so as to honor the 50/50 warranty.

I think they lost! But at 20 years old

I had a great running ‘61 Porsche

356B Normal with a great clutch

and brakes, with about 1/4 of the

driver’s door sliding along the body

every time I got in the car.

I then took the car to my

favorite body shop where they let

me use their tools to remove all the

chrome, bumpers, and interior. I

even got a glass shop to remove and

replace the front and rear glass for

$15 so as to get a better paint job.

I painted it a super bright Porsche

red, or so I thought. That thing

was so ORANGE it would make

any UT alumni proud. To fix the

door, other rust, and paint (I did

the prep work), it cost about $45.

That and some other miscellaneous

goodies, the $15 for glass R&R,

plus the $178 I paid towards the

mechanical, plus the $650, brought

the total investment up to about

$900. Let’s see now, a five-year-old

Porsche (in decent shape) for $900.

Those were the days!

I was still drag racing my ‘65

GTO on the weekends, turning in

the high 13s on street tires through

the mufflers. And I could always

win my “B” Pure Stock class every

Sunday. Well, I should have learned

early on that when you do well,

somebody always wants to bring

you down or insinuate that you

were cheating. But no one would

just come out and accuse me, nor

put up the $65 protest/tear-down

fee, so there was a strip protest (I

tear down for free to prove I was

not cheating). I said I would tear

down for the $65 that everyone else

got, but not for free. They banned

the GTO from West Palm Beach

Raceway! But not before I won the

‘65 and ‘66 Florida State Pure Stock

Championships with a best time of

13.72 seconds at 105.6 mph. And

that was on street tires and through

the stock mufflers.

I couldn’t run the GTO anymore, so what class did

a ‘61 Porsche 356B Normal Porsche run in? Well, first

they said it was a sports car (two seater), but I had seats

for four, so they had to assign me to the class of “0”

Pure Stock, the lowest class. Remember I only had 60

DIN, or about 70 SAE, horsepower in a 1950 lb. car,

which translated to about 28 pounds per horsepower.

My race prep was simple. Show up at the track with

about ½ tank of gas, and pump the tires up to 50 psi.

My racing strategy was even simpler. Be friendly to

everyone, say nice things about their cars, come off the

line at 5000 rpm, and never “red light.” The fact that

I got a 4.5-second head start on the GTOs, 442s, Gran

Sports, etc. was devastating to a lot of the competitors.

Many would red light just sitting there watching me go

down the strip.

This is a good time to add that it was not my driving

ability or any super mechanical tuning skills that won

every week with the little orange Porsche. The fact that

the little car could run at least 0.5 second closer to the

“0” Stock national record than a GTO could to the

“B” Stock record made this car a winner so long as I

did not mess up. It was this neat little car! One that ran

fantastically, time after time, and was never designed to

be a drag racer, needing only the extensive race prep of

airing up the tires to 50 psi. Those were the days!

Dear Tire Guy

Yes! DE season is back upon us

once again and we’re ready for

an exciting 2020.

So for new PCA members, new DE drivers or even

experienced track turners here’s a couple of tips.

1) Tire pressure is one of the most important aspects of

tuning your car for the track. Finding this ideal pressure

for a track typically involves some trial and error: setting

the cold tire pressure based on past experience and then

making small adjustments based on driver feedback.

If you’re just starting out you’ll be just fine maintaining the

OE cold pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

As you move through the next few DE's then it may be

time to start playing with those pressures, altering them

by 1 or 2 psi as you learn the lines.

2) You need the right tires. Race conditions put tires

under FAR more duress than normal road driving, so you

want to make sure you have something with aggressive

grip to keep you firmly planted on the track. If your DE

car is also a commuter you will want something that’s also

road legal and comfortable, something like the Michelin

Pilot Sport 4S. If you want a dedicated aggressive race

set you could look at something like the Michelin Cup 2,

Toyo 888R, or the Nitto NT-01.

We’re looking forward to seeing all the familiar PCA

Mavs & Mochas: Southlake Town Center

by Pat Carmichael

photos provided by Jay Miller & Bill Middelton

Oh what a beautiful morning - oh what a beautiful town

square. We’re here in the heart of Southlake on a sunny

Saturday. It really is unique that a suburb created, from

scratch, a town square offering a wonderful place to meet

friends, eat all kinds of food, and shop till you drop. A

place that is more than a place to gather, but also a chance

to look back at an earlier time with trees, walks, fountains,

and Recreation official approached . . . .

To make a long story short, even though we have done

this at the Southlake Square for several years, from here on

out we’re going to have to get a permit. That just requires

a couple weeks advanced registration, pay a fee, sing the

Southlake official song, or something like that. So we just

had to pack up the table, put away the tent, and enjoy the

ponds, and a band gazebo (maybe next year we invite the

high school band to play). Oh, and 140+ Porsche Mavs &

Mochas participants all scurrying to the Starbucks.

The weather cooperated with a really mildly cool day,

although it was sunny and bright. It all started peacefully

enough as the guys were setting up the little pop-up tent

with the table and placing flags. Then a Southlake Parks

rest of the day with each other. Which we did.

The cars were awesome. All variety of models and years,

as well as most of the color spectrum, was represented.

The good thing about the Southlake gathering is it gives

the Tarrant county people a chance to pop over. It was so

good to see some of the westerners there.

All in all another great M&M . . . see y’all next time!

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor

by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Disclaimer: I get really geeky this month about some

questionable cars from the past. If the names aren’t familiar,

google them. Seriously, it’s worth it.

In the Tech Session article on page 12, I write about an

old 911 modified by Rinspeed that was sitting out back

watching the world go by. It reminded me of being a kid and

all of the crazy, over-the-top cars that were being made from

911’s in the 80’s and 90’s. The made for Miami Vice cars

from Strosek, Gemballa (I loved the Gemballa Avalanche),

Koenig and more serious cars from DP and RUF were the

things of dreams in those days. It wasn’t just 911’s that were

defiled, many a BMW and Mercedes recieved gull-wing

doors, extra gills and monochromatic paint jobs or ultrawide

fenders. Funny that back then a white interior with

red piping was the way to go, and today black on black

with black everything seems to be the statement. Anyway,

times have changed and we’ve matured. Even RWB looks

restrained when you look at what was being done back

then. But the urge has never really completely passed with

us has it? Take a walk around any of our events and you’ll

see cars customized to the owners’ individual and yes,

sometimes unique tastes. That’s what I love about Porsches.

Most of them aren’t so dear that you expect a letter from the

factory if you change something. And it’s just fun to tinker

and make them yours. In a responsible ‘can be returned to

stock’ kind of way of course.

These days in the world of air-cooled cars, we talk about

Singer and Gunthewerks among others but the story is the

same, a great platform being refined to meet the specific

desires and goals of its owner, whatever that may be.

Speaking of goals, this month is the quarterly can food

drive edition of Mavs&Mochas. Jimmy G, our Charity

Chair, hosts a canned food drive 4 times a year at Mavs &

Mochas to benefit the North Texas Food Bank. Mavericks

have always been generous to this charity and last year

donated over 1000 lbs. of food. Let’s beat that in 2020.

This is a chance to pay it forward and advance NTFB’s

10-year plan to provide access to 92 million nutritious

meals annually by 2025. By donating items like: canned

tuna and chicken, peanut butter, boxed meals, canned

fruit and veggies, canned soup, and rice and beans, we

can help North Texas families feel more secure about their

next meal.

So pick up some canned food and meet us at RAC.

Don’t forget to...Enjoy the Drive.
