After a short break, here we go again.

We are pleased that so many of you have

There really is something for everyone,

including an update from Councillor

local area, another fascinating article from

local historian, Gary-Heywood-Everett, the

second of a four part series on Healey

Dell and a recipe from local celebrity chef,

Andrew Nutter. We also have the last of

our four part series about Greenbooth

Reservoir, which is well worth a read!

ARE YOU FED UP WITH CLUTTER?

Have you ever looked around your home and think “’arghhh we could

do with more space?” or are you about to have a tidy up but don’t

want to throw everything out? Well, the answer could be to make more

use of the space you’ve already got, literally under your own roof.

For many home owners, the loft is an underutilised area because it can be

difficult and dangerous to reach. Rochdale based loft ladder installer,

Access4Lofts, whose slogan is ‘creating space the easy way’ can change all

that, often in less than a day.

Access4Lofts Rochdale is owned by Jack Ellis. Much of the work he carries

out is for growing families “I know how crucial storage space can be for large

families” says Jack.” I also find that a large percentage of my clients are retired

people looking for the safest access to their loft available.”

Jack says that with space at such a premium, it makes sense to make the

most of your loft “installing a loft ladder is quick and affordable. It’s less

expensive than a garden shed and it means you don’t have to store

everything out of the house.”

Access4Lofts provides a free survey and quote service so you can find out

what is achievable with your loft area. For the full works, customers can get

a retractable 3-section ladder, a new hatch, a floating floor over the loft

insulation and lighting.

Some homeowners who perhaps inherited an old loft ladder, may want to

consider an upgrade as in many homes the loft hatch and ladder are out of

date compared to what’s on offer now “the new ladders are spring-assisted

and lighter so they’re much easier to use” he says “the ladders can also come

with a safety handrail and there is an option of wide-tread wooden steps.

There’s really no need for anyone to be struggling in and out of the loft

anymore.”

Freeing up a room currently clogged with clutter can save a lot of trouble and

expense, as Jack explains “some people looking for more space consider

moving to a bigger home but this needn’t be necessary. People are surprised

by the amount of space a loft can create we can even include shelving to

maximise the space.”

Access4Lofts is an approved Which? Trusted trader which means they have

been accessed by Which? and passed their stringent checks. For added

confidence, Access4Lofts has full public liability insurance and all ladders and

work carried out comes with a Lifetime Guarantee.

To find out how Jack can create more space for you and

your family or to book a free survey and quote, visit the

www.access4lofts.co.uk or give Jack a call on 01706 509373.

Community Store Bargains for every budget!

Working for

the community

The Petrus Community has been providing

supported housing and related services to

homeless people in Rochdale since 1972.

It consists of a range of services including

Petrus Housing, Petrus Hub, Petrus Women and

Petrus People.

Through our community store, we aim to develop

initiatives which provide services that benefit the

community at large and opportunities for

employment and volunteering. We currently

support over 100 people each year giving them

access to recycled goods which will help them to

maintain or move into accommodation.

The community store also plays a very important

role in offering opportunities not only to paid staff but

also to volunteers and this can often lead

to paid employment.

Here are some testimonials from various

individuas and cus who have enefited from

their involvement in the community store:

Rotary Club of Rochdale members have volunteered

at the Petrus community store since its opening. It is

a fantastic social enterprise set up by the Petrus

Community charity to support the homeless. Rotary

does ‘hands on’ work to help local people and

support the Petrus service users.

Everyone in the store is very welcoming and serves

to help disadvantaged people with good quality

second hand goods at very reasonable prices.

We admire the hard work of the staff and the many

volunteers including Petrus service users taking a

step into full time employment. We will continue to

support this great enterprise

Elvet Smith

Past President of Rochdale Rotary Club

The job centre

sent me for one month’s

unpaid work experience

in 2014.I’ve never left!

I volunteered on the delivery

van and in the store, carrying

fixing and collecting/

delivering furniture. I’ve

gained valuable experience,

met some wonderful people

and made some great

friendships, and in the

last 6 months Petrus

has offered me

paid work.

D.C.

Due to various circumstances, I was left

with a one bed roomed flat and unable to

furnish it myself as I didn’t have the funds.

I was issued with a voucher from Petrus

and was able to receive a bed, wardrobe,

drawers and other basic essentials

without which I would have never been

able to get by day-to-day. Petrus has

been such a fantastic help to me, the

voucher scheme is a great asset to me

and others in a similar situation.

T.R.

I’ve worked for the Petrus

Community Store since we

opened in 2013. The support from

volunteers and donators is awe

inspiring. I’ve been in continuous

employment for the last 37 years

and have never had such job

satisfaction as I’ve had whilst being

at the store. The benefit to

volunteers and the recipients of the

voucher scheme (over 650

vouchers issued) is wonderful.

Community Matters

By Councillor Shaun O’Neill

I am writing this article in January, so I hope it’s not too

late to wish you all a Happy New Year.

This Christmas has been entertaining for everyone in Healey, Syke and

Shawclough – starting with the Christmas Tree Light switch on at the end

of November and culminating in the Carols Around the Tree just before

Christmas. Cronkeyshaw Common hasn’t seen such a massed gathering

since John Bright’s 70th birthday on 16th November 1881 when 30,000

people gathered on the common by torchlight. This time the celebrations

were by the light of the tree – but just as impressive for all that.

And speaking of Cronkeyshaw Common, preparations for repairs to Syke

Pond are progressing, funds are secured for the necessary repairs to the

paths on the common and strategies, including CCTV, are in place to help

prevent further thefts of stone flags.

Over in Shawclough I hope you saw the poppy wreath at the foot of the

Unknown Soldier on the Healey Triangle – and it’s nearly time to look out

for the blossoming of the bluebell carpet among the neighbouring trees.

Our local Police Officer and PCSO have been distributing leaflets in the

area explaining how off-road biking is being tackled on green spaces, the

common, and the surrounding moors. Don’t forget that you can report

anything of this nature by ringing 101.

Road safety is always at the top of the agenda for many of our residents

and it is very encouraging to see the traffic calming measures recently put

in place on Bentley St. and Mizzy Rd. Further traffic surveys on Whitworth

Rd. and Dewhirst Rd. are in the pipeline along with a section of Heights

Lane, near to Brownhill School, which has recently been given

funding approval.

On a lighter note, Dippy the Dinosaur is coming to Town! Make no bones

about it, this roarsome event will run from 10th February until 28th June

in Riverside and Touchstones. Rochdale is one of only eight venues to be

chosen to host this once in a lifetime natural history adventure.

And the best bit is it’s all free of charge!

From The Archives

Jonathan Paul Clegg was born on

7th June 1953 in Bacup to a British

father, Dennis Clegg, and a

Zimbabwean mother, Muriel Clegg

nee Braudo. Muriel came from a long

line of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants

and brought up Johnny as a secular

Jew, refusing the bar mitzvah

for him.

On his parent’s divorce when he was an

infant Johnny and his mother moved to

Zimbabwe, to Israel, to Zambia where he

attended a multi-racial school and then,

when he was six years old to South Africa

where he commented that he felt like a

migrant. Johnny’s mother was a jazz

singer and married a South African

journalist who introduced the twelve year

old Johnny to Zulu workers in the black

townships. As these areas were

segregated there were dangers in mixing

with this group, but he did it anyway and

the experience had a significant effect on

the young man.

JOHNNY CLEGG

Johnny’s adolescent years were spent

soaking up this culture, in particular the

music of the black suburbs of Johannesburg

and under the teaching of Charlie Mzila, a

cleaner by day and a musician by night,

he learned the Zulu language as well as

indigenous dance and guitar styles.

Under apartheid these were perilous

things to do and at the age of fifteen

Johnny Clegg was arrested for trespass

on government property and for violating

congregation laws after curfew hours.

This didn’t stop him though, and at the

age of seventeen in 1969 he met Sipho

Mchunu, a migrant worker and gardener

and along with the guitarist Charlie Mzila

formed his first musical partnership,

Juluka, (meaning ‘Sweat’) and with them

performed Zulu songs and rhythms

influenced by Celtic folk music. As a mixed

race band, Juluka’s music could not be

played by national broadcasters and Clegg

and the band not only faced censorship

from the government but risked

imprisonment by appearing in clubs and

other venues in South Africa. This band

stayed together until 1986 when Mchunu

chose to stop touring and take up

cattle farming. At that point Clegg formed

Savuka (which means ‘We have risen’) and

recorded solo albums with this new

mixed-race band.

During all of this time his music was

recognised as important in the antiapartheid

movement with political Zulu

36

and English lyrics intermixed, but this led

to regular harassment and imprisonment

of the band members and their concerts

being broken up by the authorities.

Wherever they were held, their

performances were often disrupted as

under apartheid legislation known as the

Group Areas Act white people like Johnny

Clegg were not permitted to enter

segregated black townships without

official permits and these were often

withheld. Similarly, black people were

kept out of whites-only areas by night-time

curfews. Due to his political and cultural

stance Clegg became known as the ‘white

Zulu’ although he didn’t care for that name.

Eventually both of Clegg’s bands proved

popular in the black and white

communities, selling enough to win two

platinum and five gold albums and touring

the world with their inter-racial music and

message. So popular were they that in Lyon

they drew such a large crowd that Michael

Jackson was forced to cancel his concert,

claiming ‘they have stolen my fans!’

During a Savuka concert in Frankfurt in

1999 Johnny was joined onstage by Nelson

Mandela who danced as Clegg sang

‘Asimbonanga’ the protest song Savuka

had dedicated to him when Mandela was

in jail. In the United Kingdom however,

things were never good for Johnny.

Because he had been expelled from the

Musicians Union his band were barred

from playing in June 1988 at the Wembley

Stadium Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute.

In 1990, Clegg was still politically and

musically active, telling the New York

Times that their mission was ‘to bring a

whole collection of songs that are about the

South African experience to the world.”

As if all of this wasn’t enough, Johnny Clegg

had a second career as an Anthropology

lecturer at both the Universities of

Witwatersrand and Natal, writing a

number of important papers on Zulu music.

He would build his knowledge of culture and

history into his stage act with Juluka and

Savuka. His work was recognised in 2015

when he was made an OBE.

Clegg’s touring schedule was cut short in

2017 after undergoing critical surgery and

in 2019 he died from pancreatic cancer

having performed his last concert in

Mauritius in October 2018. He was 66

years old. A statement by the South

African government against whom he had

struggled for most of his life captures his

importance : ‘Mr. Clegg’s music had the

ability to unite people across the races’ and

that he had ‘made an indelible mark in the

music industry and the hearts of the

people.’ Born in Bacup, he became a

national hero in South Africa by defying

with joyful music and powerful language

the evils of apartheid policies.

If you have any memories or comments about Johnny Clegg, I’d be delighted to hear

from you and add them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject. Please contact

Gary Heywood-Everett at garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or leave your comments

by text or by recorded message at 07745201263.

NORDEN

Greenbooth

& DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

THE FINAL CHAPTER

We left our last visit to Greenbooth

with the end of the Hutchinson

Reign. Arthur had left Greenbooth

in 1911 and his untimely death

followed only one year later.

The mill itself had closed its gates in 1908,

whilst coal from the mine continued to be

brought down into Greenbooth and sold

locally up until the 1930’s.

Whilst the village had been under the

ownership of the Butterworth/Hutchinson

family, its residents had enjoyed a peaceful

and, in some ways, a protected existence.

Greenbooth, once a secluded and secure

oasis providing home, work and education

now imposed restrictions. Now the security

of work at the mill was no longer

available, the death knell for Greenbooth

village had already started to toll.

The closure meant that many families had

lost their livelihoods and no longer had the

security blanket that local regular work had

afforded them. This now meant a search for

work further afield, that fact in itself

bringing the problems of longer travel

routes when finances were already stretched

or in some cases, non-existent. For some,

this resulted in the lengthening of the

working day and additional expense if work

could not be had at a walkable distance.

Many therefore, that were lucky enough

to find work elsewhere, often found it

impossible to remain in the village. Others

were forced, by necessity, to move away in

a bid to find work. Bit by bit this began to

have an impact on the population and so

the sad decline of the village was at this

point inevitable.

38

The cottages and indeed later, Greenbooth

Mill, was purchased by the owners of

Tenterhouse Mill, mainly for the water

rights. The closure of the mill resulted in

the school being taken over by the council

and now becoming Greenbooth Council

School. The school continued its operation

until 1931 when its closure meant scholars

transferring to Norden to continue their

education. The little shop in the village

valiantly continued to supply its customers

with goods until the very end when it closed

its doors for the final time in 1958.

For some time, Heywood & Middleton Water

Board had earmarked this prime location for

the construction of a new and much needed

reservoir. The announcement was made in

1955 that the village was to be submerged

under 700 million gallons of water at an

estimated cost of £1.25 million pounds.

The final costing actually coming in at £2.1

million pounds.

A Surveyor at the time discussing its

construction explained that the width at the

crest was to be 1000 feet and 117 feet in the

centre. It was to be built on a foundation of

concrete with a central core of puddle clay.

The clay itself was to be used to create a

watertight seal in the bed of the reservoir.

By this time many of the houses had already

fallen into disrepair and at the time of

the demolition only 46 houses were still

standing, 20 of those being derelict. The

remaining residents were rehoused, sadly

other nearby properties fell under the axe

of having to be sacrificed to complete the

work. One such family had lived for many

years in the village itself and only recently

had realised their dream of achieving their

recently built bungalow. How heartbreaking

it must have been for them to be told it

stood in the path of the reservoir and were

reluctantly forced to relocate.

Visit our website www.streetwisemag.co.uk for all the info about the Streetwise magazines

39

It was originally considered this was now

the total extent of the demolition.

Greenbooth House, a beautiful and

substantial home standing in its own

grounds on Greenbooth Road was originally

deemed to be safe and not under threat of

demolition.

However, during construction, an

unexpected problem resulted in the dam

wall when a break point showed that the

current build was not adequate. Disaster

struck for the residents of Greenbooth

House when they experienced shock waves

from that incident. The family who lived

there were devasted when they received

the news that the property had to now be

demolished to make way for a second dam

wall to ensure the safety and viability of

the reservoir. The family had no alternative

but to vacate and were given only 2 weeks’

notice to leave.

The reservoir was completed in 1961 and

was officially opened in 1965. Many local

residents will no doubt remember when

another problem arose in 1983 when there

appeared to be a problem with the dam

sinking. In order for repairs to take place

25 million gallons of water per day was

drained. Many will remember the old

bridge now being revealed, its date of 1870

still being clearly visibly carved into the

stonework.

Heywood and Middleton Water Board

had made a firm promise to restore and

landscape the area surrounding the

reservoir making it available to all. I’m

sure many of us will agree that they finally

fulfilled the promise and that Greenbooth

has provided us with a very beautiful place

to enjoy a walk and enjoy the tranquillity of

the beautiful location. All that now remains

is the tribute plaque attached to wall.

For those however that still have memories

of village, perhaps in their minds eye they

can still see and hear the strain of the village

itself and the children playing on those

cobbled streets. I hope in some way my

articles have helped to bring some of those

lives back to the forefront of our minds and

maybe appreciate a little more the valuable

history and legacy left to us by those long

departed days.

Nominations are officially open for

Springhill Hospice’s Woman of The Year 2020

Springhill Hospice’s annual event returns for its 29th year in 2020,

and nominations are now open to find the next Woman of Rochdale

Springhill Hospice is looking for nominees for the award which celebrates local women who have done

something extraordinary in and for her community. She could be part of a local community group, charity

or just carry out pure acts of kindness.

Nominations are now open and close on Monday 2nd March. Nominations should be between 200 and 500

words and describe exactly what sets your community champion apart from others.

The celebratory luncheon and award ceremony takes place on Friday 24th April at Rochdale Town Hall.

Last year saw Carole Kelly, an inspiring mother of three, become Rochdale’s 28th Woman of Rochdale.

Carole founded the charity Jolly Josh in memory of her son, Josh. She was inspired to establish the charity

after feeling there was a gap in the system that enable

families of disabled children and children with special

needs to connect with one another.

Jolly Josh has since gone on to bring families together,

share experiences, exchange information and eliminate

isolation.

Josh sadly died on 27th August 2017, just one month

before Jolly Josh was due to begin but through Jolly Josh

his memory shines through these play and stay sessions,

having become a lifeline for many local families who are

caring for children living with a disability.

Nominations will be considered by an all women

committee, made up of local ladies from all walks of life,

from lawyers to councilors, business women to retirees.

Springhill Hospice’s Rochdale Woman of The Year

Organiser, Sophie Ansley, said: “Each year it is an honor

to put together this event on behalf of Springhill Hospice,

in which proceeds raised from the Luncheon is donated.

Every nominee is deserving of this recognition but

obviously there would be no event without your

nominations and I am sure there is one woman in

everybody’s life who goes above and beyond.”

Fairies Chapel & Witches at Healey Dell

EPISODE 2 OF 4

Healey Dell is well

known for its nature

and beautiful

surrounding. But as

well as all that, the

Dell’s almost

mystical setting

carries its own rich

folklore and legends.

Visiting its hidden nooks and secret niches, it is not

hard to envisage how the area lent itself to stories

of magic and supernatural mischief, involving

fairies, dwarves, witches, elves and evil spirits. And

yes, even Robin Hood, who in his earlier versions

originates in western Yorkshire rather than the

Nottingham and Sherwood Forest of movie fame.

Perhaps the best known of these is the ‘Fairies’

Chapel’, once clearly visible in the ‘Thrutch’, a

narrow gorge in the heart of the Dell until it was

submerged by a great flood in the summer of 1838.

It was said to contain a pulpit, reading desk and

seats, carved from the rock by the relentless force

of rushing water. The old Spodden Bridge and many

of the surrounding mills and other structures were

destroyed or damaged in the flood, and the ‘Chapel’

disappeared into a fissure of the rock.

In one version, the ‘chapel’ was created as a place

of banishment for witches and evil spirits by the

King of the Fairies, who had freed Robin Hood of

their bewitchment. On the king’s advice, Robin

had dropped a magical ring in to the witches’

cauldron from a tree on a cliff above the gorge.

The cauldron exploded in a thousand pieces with

a clap of thunder.

Another legend concerns Lady Eleanor Byron, an

ancestor of the poet Lord Byron, during the reign

of Edward IV (1461-1483). A local fortune-teller

and communer with the Fairy Queen, Mother

Bagden, whose son owned the ‘Owd Mill i’ th’

Thrutch’, had predicted Lady Eleanor would

become a bride and a widow on the same day.

Indeed she did. Her groom, Oliver Chadwick, was

killed in a feud with the rivalling Trafford family

on his wedding night.

Dating back much further is the legend of the

‘Healey Dwarf’, a small stone sentinel in the

middle of the river. He cavorted with the fairies

there and told them he never wanted to leave, so

there he still stands. The dwarf was said to be the

size of a small child with a huge ginger beard,

always dressed in green and brown checked

trousers and a white shirt rolled up at the sleeves.

If you want to find fairies in the Dell, one good

way is to imagine the many small creatures that

live there as carrying their spirits, for example the

bright blue kingfisher or the grey wagtail. This

way you’ll be well rewarded in a way scientist like

David Attenborough may approve.

Happy fairy-finding!

The Healey Dell Heritage Centre & Tea Rooms

Dell Road, Rochdale OL12 8TT is open on Thursday to Sunday and is

a good starting point. Here you will find maps and further information

on the Fairies Chapel and other interesting point.

Our sincere thanks and acknowledgements go to Mark A Chrimes for his photographs

and David Lowe for his contribution with this article.
