Skincare: Protecting Skin Against HEV Light the blue Protecting skin against High Energy Visible light damage We all know the damage that UV rays can do to skin, accelerating the effects of ageing, but skin experts are reporting an increasing need to protect against High Energy Visible light (HEV) more commonly referred to as blue light, emitted from devices such as computer screens, phones and tablets as well as fluorescent lighting and natural daylight. “Our skin has to face daily, more than 300 sources of pollution; these include UV rays, air pollution and domestic pollution,” explains Carole Jones of Totally UK. “HEV is amongst these and is a relatively new threat to the skin. HEV is a group of artificial light, known as blue light which is emitted from electronic devices such as computers, laptops, mobile phones tablets etc. Blue light is a short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy and can be classified as a third band of sun ray. Blue light produces more hyperpigmentation than UVB and is more damaging that UVA and UVB combined because it penetrates down to the bottom of the dermis, affecting production of Collagen, Elastin and Hyaluronic acid.” This high-frequency, high-energy light penetrates skin from 380 to 500 nanometres through to the hypodermis causing an inflammatory effect resulting in loss of moisture, leading to premature ageing, wrinkle formation, uneven texture and loss of skin tone. “Blue light that originates from digital devices causes oxidative stress and accelerated ageing while increasing the risk of photo-ageing and delaying the skin’s barrier recovery,” add South African skincare brand, Theravine. The average person looks at their phone 157 times per day.” It should be noted that damage from High Energy Visible Light is caused through constant exposure, common due to our modern lifestyles which require us to sit in front of flatscreen monitors day after day, communicate via our smartphones and entertain ourselves with our tablets. Blue light emitting diodes (LED) used in the salon for the phototherapy treatment of acne is delivered in short treatment sessions, and this is not thought to cause the damaging effects of our daily exposure to HEV light. Protection from HEV light damage With so much reliance on technology, it’s not practical to tell clients to stop using their devices, although limiting exposure is of course helpful, so how can you protect yours and your clients’ skins from HEV light? Wearing a daily SPF, regardless of the weather, is most important, choosing one that is broad spectrum and formulated with antioxidants. Plus, choose skincare formulated with vitamin C, which will help to fight free radicals and stimulate Collagen production.
