Fresh Thinking
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.
Feeling anxious? For how much longer?
...I help people get their lives back on track, working
with areas such as:
• Anxiety • Depression • Insomnia
• Fears/Phobias • Focus/Motivation ...and much more!
Whether you are feeling down, lacking in motivation or would just like to be
able to sleep better, I can help you get the results you are looking for. You don’t
have to believe you can change, you just need to want the change.
I work very successfully with people from all walks of life who are suffering
from all manner of anxiety and anxiety related difficulties. I help them
overcome the problems they are struggling with so they can get back to being
their real selves and achieve more enjoyment from life.
Happy clients…
“I admit I was sceptical but from the minute I met Cathy for the initial
consultation I was on the road to recovery” Lyndsey from Littleborough
“Cathy’s solution focused sessions are just amazing!” Jackie from Milnrow
“After each session I felt more and more relaxed and positive and I am
delighted to say I now have my life back” Martin from Norden

In the Garden March 82
Heather’s Rhubarb and Ginger Crumble 83
Welcome to
our March Issue!
We hope you like this month’s front
cover. Over the years, Kate has been
eager to include her dog, Jess, and
this month she’s managed to do it!
Details of where and who took the
photograph are shown at the bottom
of the page.
Two important dates for your diary are
Rochdale Food & Drink Festival taking
place on April 4th as well as Norden’s
Great British Spring Clean on 21st March,
an opportunity to donate some of your
time to support your local community and
keep your surrounding area clean.
In previous issues we have featured
articles about the history of Greenbooth
written by Val Corns, Chair of Norden’s
Historical Society. This month features the
last one and is well worth a read.
Forthcoming meeting dates for the society
are listed in our What’s On guide along
with those for all the other local groups
and charities. We are inundated with
information for this section each month
and would like to thank everyone who
contacts us.
Keep this month’s magazine handy – it’s
the essential guide for every household!
Until next month...
This month’s front cover photo is of Kate’s bichon frise,
Jess, taken in Ashworth Valley by local photographer
Richard who specialises in pet and baby portraits.
For further information contact Richard Smith Photography
on 07717 660734 or go to www.rsmithphoto.co.uk. Jess
is groomed at Greenbooth Groom Room, for further info
and prices contact Julia on 07503 764544.

OUR DOGS NEED YOU
Are you a dog lover that
can lend a paw?
Being a home boarder brings all the
benefits of having a dog at home but
without the full time responsibility
of owning one yourself.
• A dog is the perfect fun loving friend to keep you company.
• Walking a dog gives you a great reason to get out and
exercise in the fresh air.
• If your already a dog owner, having a dog to stay can

LEAFLET DISTRIBUTION?
At Streetwise we can personally hand deliver your
leaflets by inserting them into our magazines.
Our delivery teams will then distribute them to each of our 4 areas
within Rochdale for as little as £45 per 1,000 leaflets. Rather than it
arriving alongside several other leaflets, yours will be the ONLY leaflet
included in the magazine and
therefore have maximum visibility.

Food & Drink
Festival Returns
TV presenter Chris Bavin
and ‘Gastronaut’ Stfan Gates
among the highlights of Rochdale
Food & Drink Festival’s 2020 line-up
Visitors to this year’s Rochdale Food & Drink Festival, which
returns on Saturday 4 April in and around Rochdale Town Hall
– are in for another treat.
Television presenter Chris Bavin will be hosting the day, with Rochdale’s Andrew Nutter, Tom McNeeney,
Austin Hopley and Adolfus Lewis among the local chefs cooking at the festival this spring. ‘Gastronaut’
Stefan Gates will be performing his energetic food and science shows on the family stage, with more
guests to be announced.
Bavin, presenter of BBC1’s popular ‘Eat Well for Less’ and a ‘Britain’s Best Home Cook’ judge is also a
former greengrocer. He will be returning to town having appeared at Rochdale Feel Good Festival in
2016. Before his television career took off he ran his green grocer business, ‘The Naked Grocer’, twice
winning the ‘National Independent Retailer of the Year’ award. His long running ‘Eat Well For Less’
television series with Masterchef’s Gregg Wallace sees them helping families across the UK, proving
good food doesn’t have to cost the earth. He also has a great interest in farming and all areas of fresh
produce. He’s an active supporter of reducing food waste and his first solo cookbook ‘Good Food, Sorted’,
was published earlier this year. Chris’s brand new book ‘Fakeaway’ features 100 simple healthy recipes
for takeaway-inspired meals that needn’t feel like junk food!
Local star chef and festival favourite Andrew Nutter has had an
amazing career since coming runner-up in the National Junior
Cook of the Year competition aged just 13-years-old. Seven years
later he launched ‘Nutters’ Restaurant, which celebrated its 25th
anniversary last year. He’s won multiple awards, including
Lancashire Chef of the Year, Restaurant of the Year, and ‘Rochdale
Man of the Year.’ In 2016 he opened gastropub ‘The Bird At Birtle.’
Popular TV presenter and Gastronaut Stefan Gates will be
performing on the family stage. Stefan blends food with science
and laughter, engaging and educating both children and adults
with spectacular experiments, explosions, rockets and edible
chemical reactions! Renowned for his quirky style and exciting
live shows, Stefan has presented over 20 television series
including the acclaimed CBBC series Incredible Edibles and
Gastronuts (CBBC), food science series Harvest (BBC2), Food
Factory (BBC1), E Numbers: An Edible Adventure (BBC2) and
most recently Secrets of Your Supermarket Food (Channel 5).
His most recent book is Science You Can Eat (Dorling Kindersley).
HOST: Food favourite Chris Bavin, Tom McNeeney, head chef at local family pub The Oxford and a
presenter of BBC1’s popular ‘Eat Well for
familiar face on the area’s culinary scene will be cooking at the
Less’ and a ‘Britain’s Best Home Cook’
judge will be at Rochdale Food & Drink festival. He last appeared at the event in 2018 and attracted a

Austin Hopley, formerly of Rochdale’s multi-award
winning pub The Baum and now head chef at
new Indian street food restaurant and craft ale
pub - Bombay Brew will be cooking in the festival
kitchen for the second year in a row.
Adolfus Lewis went down a storm at this year’s
festival and will be back for 2020. He had 26
years’ experience as a chef before joining the
team at the Hare on the Hill in Littleborough
when it opened a year ago.
The festival kitchen will be located inside the
gothic splendour of Rochdale town hall along
with plenty of stalls and activities. There’ll be an

music and activities – with lots to offer from
nearby local pubs, bars and restaurants.

Street names have been seen as
memorials to eminent people in
towns and cities, no more so in
Rochdale perhaps than those
named after the Royds family.
14th century records of the family suggest
that the Royds were landowners near
Halifax before moving to Rochdale where
they set up as farmers and wool-staplers,
a family important enough subsequently
to be given the right to bear arms. By the
mid-18th century James Royds had the
wealth to purchase land and advance
businesses in Rochdale and by 1827 at
the age of 16 Albert Hudson Royds went
into banking, setting up with his brother
William Edward The Rochdale Bank, the
profits from which built many fine houses
in the town as well as enabling further
family investment in roads, waterways and
railways. At the same time Albert and other
family members pursued civic and political
careers. Though some of the family
moved south to Worcestershire to further
their wealth accumulation as gentleman
farmers, Rochdale remained close to their
hearts, setting up Mount Falinge as their
main home (now a façade in Falinge Park)
which had been built by James Royds with
Albert moving back to it in 1878.
The family diaries and letters bear witness
not only to the Royds’ determined business
character but also to their deeply rooted
Christian faith so Albert Hudson Royds
building a church in the town dedicated
to the memory of his parents would
have come as no surprise. St Edmunds
however, was no ordinary church. The
average cost of building a church in 1873
would have been about £5000 but Royds
spent between £20,000 and £30,000 on St
Edmunds. The reasons why are concerned
with the devout Christianity of the family
but also their connection to Freemasonry,
Albert Royds eventually rising to the status
of Provincial Grand Master and Grand
Superintendent in the Royal Arch.
Placed at the crossing of four streets and
visible from the family home at Mount
Falinge the church stands on a diamondshaped
plinth with building dimensions
proportional to those believed to be those
of King Solomon’s Temple, its length
being three times and its height one and
a half times its breadth. This four-square
plan was based on six cubes and built
on mathematically symbolic principles.
Although the architects of St Edmunds
Church were James Medland and Henry
Taylor, Albert Royds made specific
interior and exterior demands in line with
freemason symbolism.
The stained glass windows for example,
designed by Henry Holiday feature Bible
stories but also Freemason symbols such
as the Jesse Tree and Nehemiah, Ezra and
the Tyler, the guard of a Masonic Lodge
wielding the Tyler’s sword which would
have been significant for those within the
Craft of Freemasonry. In another reflection
60

of one of the supposed features of King
Solomon’s Temple Royds shipped cedar
wood from Lebanon for the carved hammer
beams, spandrels and tie beams inside
the church. Notable also is the church’s
interior carving, some of it derived from
the Arabic, some from Spanish influences,
representing floral symbols which would
have meaning outside of the Christian
faith. The font and the lecturn, presented
by two of the Royds’ sons are also carved
with Masonic symbols with the bases
decorated with the square, level and plumb
rule, the Bible supported on a large square
and compasses enclosing a five-pointed
star. Other features in the church include
a templar stone cross and a number of
pentagrams including a pentagonal bronze
star now inside the church but which had
once been the weather vane crowning the
church.
It is unclear whether St Edmunds was ever
intended to have been used as a Masonic
Lodge but there are signs that it was. The
crypt for example runs the length and
width of the church with, unusually, two
trap doors, features which could be used
in Masonic rituals of initiate ‘raising’ and
rebirth from the ground below.
Closed in 2008 and empty for three years,
St Edmunds Church is now protected by
Grade I listed building status and stands
under the care of the Church Conservation
Trust (see at www.visitchurches.org.uk).
Its importance has placed it amongst the
top 10 endangered buildings in the country
so St Edmunds remains in a constant
state of care and repair, only supported
financially and actively in that endeavour
by volunteers rather than by wealthy
funders or institutional backers. At the
moment the church is used for cultural
and heritage events but there are plans
to develop it into a centre for the study
of architectural heritage. St Edmunds
does have open days to the public on the
first and third Saturday of every month.
Rochdale should be proud of this church
and sensitive to St Edmunds as a building
important not only as part of Rochdale’s
local heritage but also in just as esoteric
a way as buildings featured in Dan Brown
‘Da Vinci Code’ novels. It is important
enough to have been described by Sir
Nikolaus Pevsner as ‘Rochdale’s temple to
Freemasonry, a total concept as exotic as
Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland.’
You can find more about this church at www.friendsofstedmunds.org.uk but if you have
any memories or comments about St Edmunds at Falinge I’d be delighted to hear from
you and add them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject. Please contact Gary
Heywood-Everett at garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or leave your comments

Greenbooth
& DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
THE FINAL CHAPTER
We left our last visit to Greenbooth
with the end of the Hutchinson
Reign. Arthur had left Greenbooth
in 1911 and his untimely death
followed only one year later.
The mill itself had closed its gates in 1908,
whilst coal from the mine continued to be
brought down into Greenbooth and sold
locally up until the 1930’s.
Whilst the village had been under the
ownership of the Butterworth/Hutchinson
family, its residents had enjoyed a peaceful
and, in some ways, a protected existence.
Greenbooth, once a secluded and secure
oasis providing home, work and education
now imposed restrictions. Now the security
of work at the mill was no longer
available, the death knell for Greenbooth
village had already started to toll.
The closure meant that many families had
lost their livelihoods and no longer had the
security blanket that local regular work had
afforded them. This now meant a search for
work further afield, that fact in itself
bringing the problems of longer travel
routes when finances were already stretched
or in some cases, non-existent. For some,
this resulted in the lengthening of the
working day and additional expense if work
could not be had at a walkable distance.
Many therefore, that were lucky enough
to find work elsewhere, often found it
impossible to remain in the village. Others
were forced, by necessity, to move away in
a bid to find work. Bit by bit this began to
have an impact on the population and so
the sad decline of the village was at this
point inevitable.
62

The cottages and indeed later, Greenbooth
Mill, was purchased by the owners of
Tenterhouse Mill, mainly for the water
rights. The closure of the mill resulted in
the school being taken over by the council
and now becoming Greenbooth Council
School. The school continued its operation
until 1931 when its closure meant scholars
transferring to Norden to continue their
education. The little shop in the village
valiantly continued to supply its customers
with goods until the very end when it closed
its doors for the final time in 1958.
For some time, Heywood & Middleton Water
Board had earmarked this prime location for
the construction of a new and much needed
reservoir. The announcement was made in
1955 that the village was to be submerged
under 700 million gallons of water at an
estimated cost of £1.25 million pounds.
The final costing actually coming in at £2.1
million pounds.
A Surveyor at the time discussing its
construction explained that the width at the
crest was to be 1000 feet and 117 feet in the
centre. It was to be built on a foundation of
concrete with a central core of puddle clay.
The clay itself was to be used to create a
watertight seal in the bed of the reservoir.
By this time many of the houses had already
fallen into disrepair and at the time of
the demolition only 46 houses were still
standing, 20 of those being derelict. The
remaining residents were rehoused, sadly
other nearby properties fell under the axe
of having to be sacrificed to complete the
work. One such family had lived for many
years in the village itself and only recently
had realised their dream of achieving their
recently built bungalow. How heartbreaking
it must have been for them to be told it
stood in the path of the reservoir and were
reluctantly forced to relocate.
Visit our website www.streetwisemag.co.uk for all the info about the Streetwise magazines
63
It was originally considered this was now
the total extent of the demolition.
Greenbooth House, a beautiful and
substantial home standing in its own
grounds on Greenbooth Road was originally
deemed to be safe and not under threat of
demolition.
However, during construction, an
unexpected problem resulted in the dam
wall when a break point showed that the
current build was not adequate. Disaster
struck for the residents of Greenbooth
House when they experienced shock waves
from that incident. The family who lived
there were devasted when they received
the news that the property had to now be
demolished to make way for a second dam
wall to ensure the safety and viability of
the reservoir. The family had no alternative
but to vacate and were given only 2 weeks’
notice to leave.
The reservoir was completed in 1961 and
was officially opened in 1965. Many local
residents will no doubt remember when
another problem arose in 1983 when there
appeared to be a problem with the dam
sinking. In order for repairs to take place
25 million gallons of water per day was
drained. Many will remember the old
bridge now being revealed, its date of 1870
still being clearly visibly carved into the
stonework.
Heywood and Middleton Water Board
had made a firm promise to restore and
landscape the area surrounding the
reservoir making it available to all. I’m
sure many of us will agree that they finally
fulfilled the promise and that Greenbooth
has provided us with a very beautiful place
to enjoy a walk and enjoy the tranquillity of
the beautiful location. All that now remains
is the tribute plaque attached to wall.
For those however that still have memories
of village, perhaps in their minds eye they
can still see and hear the strain of the village
itself and the children playing on those
cobbled streets. I hope in some way my
articles have helped to bring some of those
lives back to the forefront of our minds and
maybe appreciate a little more the valuable
history and legacy left to us by those long
departed days.

Nominations are officially open for
Springhill Hospice’s Woman of The Year 2020
Springhill Hospice’s annual event returns for its 29th year in 2020,
and nominations are now open to find the next Woman of Rochdale
Springhill Hospice is looking for nominees for the award which celebrates local women who have done
something extraordinary in and for her community. She could be part of a local community group, charity
or just carry out pure acts of kindness.
Nominations are now open and close on Monday 2nd March. Nominations should be between 200 and 500
words and describe exactly what sets your community champion apart from others.
The celebratory luncheon and award ceremony takes place on Friday 24th April at Rochdale Town Hall.
Last year saw Carole Kelly, an inspiring mother of three, become Rochdale’s 28th Woman of Rochdale.
Carole founded the charity Jolly Josh in memory of her son, Josh. She was inspired to establish the charity
after feeling there was a gap in the system that enable
families of disabled children and children with special
needs to connect with one another.
Jolly Josh has since gone on to bring families together,
share experiences, exchange information and eliminate
isolation.
Josh sadly died on 27th August 2017, just one month
before Jolly Josh was due to begin but through Jolly Josh
his memory shines through these play and stay sessions,
having become a lifeline for many local families who are
caring for children living with a disability.
Nominations will be considered by an all women
committee, made up of local ladies from all walks of life,
from lawyers to councilors, business women to retirees.
Springhill Hospice’s Rochdale Woman of The Year
Organiser, Sophie Ansley, said: “Each year it is an honor
to put together this event on behalf of Springhill Hospice,
in which proceeds raised from the Luncheon is donated.
Every nominee is deserving of this recognition but
obviously there would be no event without your
nominations and I am sure there is one woman in
everybody’s life who goes above and beyond.”

Friends of Bamford Update
Is there a clue
hidden amongst
the daffodils?
Is there a clue
through here?
Our first event of 2020, in
conjunction with the Bamford Scouts,
is to raise funds for their proposed
new headquarters on Dixon Fold, to
replace the current one which is no
longer fit for purpose.
They have generously offered that this new
building can sometimes be used by the
community when not being used by the
Scouts, so it is in all our interest to support
them. They’ve already done an incredible job
fundraising by themselves, but just need a
final push to reach their target, so work can
begin this spring. Which is where we come
in, to try and help.
We’re holding a walking Treasure Hunt
around the Bamford Area, on Sunday 29th
March, between 1.00pm and about 4.30pm,
entry £2 per head or £5 for a family. The
treasure hunt begins and ends at the Scout
Hut, Dixon Fold, opposite The Grapes. It will
take approximately one and a half hours to
complete at a gentle stroll, allowing time for
clue spotting. Not all of it is on pavements,
so wear suitable footwear. Entrants can begin
anytime between 1.00pm and 2.00pm, with
staggered leaving times if necessary. Your
entrance fee will buy you a printed sheet
with directions and clues to look out for
on the way round, some of them obvious,
for children to spot and some of them a
bit cryptic. There will also be ‘treasures’ to
collect on the way round. The sheets will
be checked when you return to the Scout

Hut, the one with the highest number of correct
answers being declared the winner at 4.00pm.
In the event of a draw, there will be tiebreaker
questions. Dogs are welcome inside.
The prize for the winner is a
£50 Voucher for a local restaurant.
Afternoon Tea with home-made cakes will be
available in the Scout hut all afternoon, from
1.00pm. So, if you don’t fancy the walk, you
can still join in and support this worthy cause
by coming along for a cake and a cuppa and by
having a go at our local picture quiz, for which
there will also be prize, though smaller! It is
hoped there will also be a display by an Irish
Dancing Group later in the afternoon.
Should the weather on the day prove to be too
bad for the Treasure Hunt to go ahead, the
picture quiz will still take place and the restaurant
vouchers will become the prize for this instead,
so it’s still worth turning up and having a go.
Every single penny raised by this event
will go to the Scouts building fund, so
please support it.

Norden Councillors pdate
Covering Norden Ward including Ashworth, Birtle & Caldershaw
Your Ward Councillors are here all year round to offer help and advice on a wide range of local issues
There has been a lot going on in Norden over the past few weeks and we have been
looking at a number of practical projects to help around the ward. The fist of these is a
new litter bin on Overtown Lane coming soon, which is used by many ramblers and dog
walkers and has been requested by a number of residents.
We are working with highways to implement new measures around the junction of
Wolstenholme Lane and Edenfield Road, to make exiting this junction safer.
We are looking forward to meeting the Friends of Heritage Green for their AGM later
this month. It is hard to believe that it is a year since we got our first village green and
an incredible five years since the whole story began. What a journey it was, but what a
result!
We have been working with our officers and enforcement teams in Environmental
Management to deal with a number of incidents of fly-tipping along Ashworth Road
again recently. The great news is we have got significant funds in place to extend the
high-level fencing which has proved so successful in preventing rubbish being dropped
down the hillsides, reducing the need for difficult and very expensive removal
operations.
We will be helping to sprucing up the village too. We recently joined the Friends of
Taylor park for their annual tidy up and preparations for the summer and we will be
working with lots of community groups who are taking part in this year’s Norden Spring
Clean event so we hope that we will see lots of you out in the village helping to keep
our community clean and green.
As ever, if you need us for anything please do get in touch or visit one of our surgeries.

Covering Bamford Ward including arland, Brimrod & udden
Your Ward Councillors are here all year round to offer help and advice on a wide range of local issues
We have been on a walkabout with the Friends of Springfield ark to see the work that
the Environmental Management team from Rochdale Council have been doing to clear
the mere and cutting back bushes etc. We are also pleased to report that by the time
this magaine comes out we should have a new community orchard and wild flower
meadow on the old grass tennis courts. It was also very nice to join the friends for
their recent fundraiser, and thanks to our new M for coming along to support us too.
We continue to work with the Friends of amford and the amford Green elt Action
Group to oppose development of our green spaces in the area.
We have a scheme in place to have the broken, light-up speed reminder sign on
Norden Road because there is still a problem with excessive speed along this stretch of
road which has been raised by a number of residents.
There is still work to be done along Cotton Lane to make it safer and more accessible
but we spoke about this at the recent area forum and have plans in place.
We will be joining the police for their new drop-in sessions at amford Chapel on the
third Thursday of each month, 1100 - 1200. Members of the public are invited to
come along for a coffee and a chat. This is subject to the police not being on any kind
of emergency business.
We are working with Highways and the police on problems caused by people driving the
wrong way on the one way section of road between Roch alley Way to Half Acre Lane.

MEET
YOUR
NEW MP
Have you always been involved
in Politics?
I come from a politically aware family. Politics was always a topic
of conversation at the dinner table and I was encouraged from an early
age to get involved.
What made you decide to stand for MP of Heywood
and Middleton?
I had so much fun standing here in 2017 I wanted to come back. I love the
people, I love the area.
Describe your first day in Parliament?
Weird. But in a good way. It’s like going to Hogwarts, but the sorting
hat already knows what house you’re in.
What are you looking forward to most in the forthcoming
months?
Getting into a routine. The first weeks are very disjointed and a bit chaotic.
Things like getting an office and a team in place take a long time.
Favourite band?
My tastes are pretty eclectic, but you can’t beat Fleetwood Mac in
my opinion.
Favourite food?
Pretty eclectic here too, but my death row meal would be KFC.
Describe yourself in three words…
Living the dream
Which person has most inspired you in your life?
My maternal grandmother.
Who would you most like to meet?
I’m still getting starstruck at Westminster, so that’ll do me for now!

Fairies Chapel & Witches at Healey Dell
EPISODE 2 OF 4
Healey Dell is well
known for its nature
and beautiful
surrounding. But as
well as all that, the
Dell’s almost
mystical setting
carries its own rich
folklore and legends.
Visiting its hidden nooks and secret niches, it is not
hard to envisage how the area lent itself to stories
of magic and supernatural mischief, involving
fairies, dwarves, witches, elves and evil spirits. And
yes, even Robin Hood, who in his earlier versions
originates in western Yorkshire rather than the
Nottingham and Sherwood Forest of movie fame.
Perhaps the best known of these is the ‘Fairies’
Chapel’, once clearly visible in the ‘Thrutch’, a
narrow gorge in the heart of the Dell until it was
submerged by a great flood in the summer of 1838.
It was said to contain a pulpit, reading desk and
seats, carved from the rock by the relentless force
of rushing water. The old Spodden Bridge and many
of the surrounding mills and other structures were
destroyed or damaged in the flood, and the ‘Chapel’
disappeared into a fissure of the rock.
In one version, the ‘chapel’ was created as a place
of banishment for witches and evil spirits by the
King of the Fairies, who had freed Robin Hood of
their bewitchment. On the king’s advice, Robin
had dropped a magical ring in to the witches’
cauldron from a tree on a cliff above the gorge.
The cauldron exploded in a thousand pieces with
a clap of thunder.
Another legend concerns Lady Eleanor Byron, an
ancestor of the poet Lord Byron, during the reign
of Edward IV (1461-1483). A local fortune-teller
and communer with the Fairy Queen, Mother
Bagden, whose son owned the ‘Owd Mill i’ th’
Thrutch’, had predicted Lady Eleanor would
become a bride and a widow on the same day.
Indeed she did. Her groom, Oliver Chadwick, was
killed in a feud with the rivalling Trafford family
on his wedding night.
Dating back much further is the legend of the
‘Healey Dwarf’, a small stone sentinel in the
middle of the river. He cavorted with the fairies
there and told them he never wanted to leave, so
there he still stands. The dwarf was said to be the
size of a small child with a huge ginger beard,
always dressed in green and brown checked
trousers and a white shirt rolled up at the sleeves.
If you want to find fairies in the Dell, one good
way is to imagine the many small creatures that
live there as carrying their spirits, for example the
bright blue kingfisher or the grey wagtail. This
way you’ll be well rewarded in a way scientist like
David Attenborough may approve.
Happy fairy-finding!
The Healey Dell Heritage Centre & Tea Rooms
Dell Road, Rochdale OL12 8TT is open on Thursday to Sunday and is
a good starting point. Here you will find maps and further information
on the Fairies Chapel and other interesting point.
Our sincere thanks and acknowledgements go to Mark A Chrimes for his photographs

Nurses take on the challenge
of a lifetime for Hospice care
Two nurses at Springhill Hospice are taking on the challenge
of a lifetime to raise money for Springhill Hospice.
Paula McNally and Hilda Wild are taking on a once in a lifetime trek, this October, to the Kerala area
of Southern India where they will explore and experience some breathtaking sights as well as volunteer
in a local children’s hospice.
The challenge will involve trekking for up to seven hours a day for four consecutive days across uneven
terrain and in high temperatures, climbing to a height of 2,640 metres and following a route through the
highest tea estate in the world. They will cross the second highest peak in South India and trek through
the rolling grasslands of the Western Ghats.
At the end of their trek Paula and Hilda will spend
two days helping at a local children’s hospice. The
hospice cares for children with Cancer, alongside
providing support for their families.
Speaking about the experience, Hilda said, “We are
taking on this challenge trek to India for Springhill
because it’s a wonderful place that deserves our
support. We’re really excited about taking on this trip
and in particular having the chance to spend some
time at the local children’s hospice and to share
some of their experiences. That might be harder than
the trek itself - and that’s a big challenge.”
“Its hot days, cold nights, strong sunshine and the
Hilda (left) and Paula (right)
possibility of rain, camping overnight on the hills with
a hole in the ground for a toilet and cold water showers,” Paula added. “The beautiful countryside should
make up for it though and spending time with the children will be a real chance to give something back.”
“It’s going to be a big physical challenge but we’re ready for it,” Hilda went on. “We would be grateful for
anyone to support our fundraising for Springhill if they can.”
To help Paula and Hilda with their fundraising drive supporting Springhill, you can make a donation online
at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/paula-and-hilda-india2020.

place from 8th to 18th October and how to sign up,

Springhill Hospice Education
Team win national award
Springhill Hospice’s Education team won a national award for their
innovative training programme for health and social care staff.
The Skills for Care Accolades award ceremony took place in London on Wednesday 22nd January, where
the team from Springhill Hospice were awarded with the Most Innovative Endorsed Learning Provider.
The award was given to the Hospice for their innovative Passport training programme. The training is
given, free of charge, to health and social care professionals across Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale.
It focusses on palliative and end of life care education and has been delivered by the team since 2015.
The team were delighted with their win and were presented the award by TV dance legend Anton du Beke.
Jane Ashworth, Education Lead and Specialist Palliative
Care Nurse at Springhill Hospice said: “Everyone who
attended the awards ceremony was absolutely delighted
when our name was read out. To have that recognition on
a national stage of all the hard work our tireless team puts
in all year round feels amazing.
“We are totally committed to making sure social care and
health workers can develop their skills and knowledge
because we know that means the people we work with
have genuine choice and control over the lives.”
A panel of expert judges were impressed by Springhill
Hospice Education Team’s innovative and passionate
approach and the positive impacts being achieved across
social care and health. The judges liked how trainers were
empowered to challenge a service, and how they provided
tailored support to people around learning disabilities and
dementia.
Skills for Care Interim CEO Andy Tilden said: “Our
Accolades awards are open to our growing network of
endorsed leading providers who like the Springhill
Hospice team have to complete a very tough evaluation
process to win our highly prized endorsement.
“The result of all that hard work in the team at all levels
can access learning and development opportunities that
means the people they work with know they can rely on
high quality services so they can live the lives they want to.”

Streetwise Magazine
CAN YOU AFFORD NOT TO ADVERTISE?
Advertisers in Streetwise benefit from a layout which is interspersed with community features,
transforming what would otherwise be simply a directory of businesses and either left in the
magazine rack or thrown away each month, into a very readable magazine and handy guide
for everyone.
Bury Choral Society has many members from the Rochdale area (and welcomes more) and
is proud to be involved with Kate and Becky at Streetwise. They allow us to promote all our
forthcoming concerts for free in the What’s On feature each month and it works as confirmed
by many members of the audience who have seen the information in Streetwise.
Bury Choral Society is delighted to recommend Streetwise to advertisers and readers.
Good luck to Kate and Becky and thank you for an informative magazine under your
cheerful management. Thank you also to your teams of distributors who deliver in all
weathers! May you go from strength to strength.
June Bowker, Bury Choral Society
I have been advertising my joinery business in Streetwise Milnrow/Newhey for many years and
as I live in the area it generates local work for me and means that I don’t have to travel too far

As a new business in Bamford, I have measured the success of
my advertising in Streetwise by using a different promotional code
each month. As a result, I know that the advert has worked and last
month saw many new customers coming into the shop and taking
advantage of the ‘GET £5 OFF’ which appeared in the February issue.
Kate and Becky were so helpful in arranging the design of my advert
which looks professional and can be easily tweaked each month
with new offers.

Advertising my business in Streetwise
has helped to increase my brand

FRIENDS OF HOPWOOD PARK
Delighted to
Receive RHSD
Gold Medal Award
Following ten years of hard work, the Friends
of Hopwood Park were delighted to receive
an RHS Gold Medal Award, they were
particularly proud to also receive the RHS
National Certificate of Distinction for Parks.
Both awards were presented in Southport at
the North West In Bloom Awards Day. I would
like to thank all our volunteers over the years,
individuals, local businesses and grant
providers who have been involved in any way
since the Friends Group started.
Initially we were a small group of mums
with a goal of improving our neglected local
green space for our children and the local
community; to bring it back into use for the
purpose which was intended some 100 years
