Pair to soar over Kaiapoi River<br />

There will be plenty of acrobatics on the<br />
Kaiapoi River next month.<br />
World champion flyboarder Gemma<br />
Weston and her brother Beau, both of<br />
Queenstown, will be demonstrating<br />
their sport at the Kaiapoi River Carnival<br />
and Boat Show on Sunday, March 1.<br />
‘‘I’m looking forward to it,’’ Gemma<br />
says.<br />
‘‘We will be putting on ashow with<br />
some choreographed moves and giving<br />
people an idea of what flyboarding looks<br />
like.<br />
‘‘Beau has some very cool moves, like<br />
dolphin dives, which Ihaven’t been able<br />
to master myself.’’<br />
While she has never flyboarded in<br />
Kaiapoi before, she has been assured<br />
the river is wider than the canals she has<br />
performed in during competitions in<br />
Europe.<br />
While Beau placed sixth in the <strong>20</strong>16<br />
European men’s championships,<br />
Gemma was the <strong>20</strong>15 world ladies<br />
champion and European ladies<br />
champion the following year.<br />
She placed second in the <strong>20</strong>16 world<br />
final, despite aserious injury.<br />
After athreeyear recovery, she got<br />
back into flyboarding last year to<br />
perform in shows, which is much more<br />

lucrative than competitions.<br />
‘‘The shows are alot of fun and Ienjoy<br />
the crowd interaction, seeing the smiles<br />
and the wonderment at seeing you fly<br />
through the air.’’<br />
Gemma says flyboarding is not a<br />
dangerous sport to learn, as beginners<br />
have an instructor operating aunit like<br />
amodified jet ski to control their power.<br />
‘‘The risk factor increases when you<br />
get to the next level. It’s like riding a<br />
bike. There’s not much risk when you<br />
are learning to ride on the flat, but when<br />
you ride down amountain at speed there<br />
is arisk.’’<br />
Advanced flyboarders use awireless<br />
remote to control their speed and propel<br />
themselves through the air.<br />
When they are not flyboarding, the<br />
pair perform as stunt doubles and extras<br />
in movies and television shows.<br />
Both appeared in The Hobbit,with<br />
Beau playing an orc and Gemma playing<br />
agoblin and alakelander.<br />
She recently appeared in the Netflix<br />
series Vikings,filmed in Ireland, where<br />
‘‘I got paid to die’’.<br />
‘‘We get to do some big battle scenes<br />
where there’s lots of weaponry and<br />
carnage. All the things the actors aren’t<br />
allowed to do. Noone wants to see their<br />
actors get hurt.<br />
‘‘For guys it’s easier. My brother gets a<br />
lot more work, but he’s agood<br />
performer, he’s ahard worker and he’s<br />
got the build.’’<br />
