the Rangiora Racecourse on<br />

beenmorethan three years<br />

in the making,Shelley says.<br />

‘‘Aftermoving to Rangiora,<br />

we were looking for aperfect<br />

spotfor abusy,colourful<br />

market.<br />

Rangiora Racecourse, and<br />

theywere keentofreeup<br />

someland forthe project.’’<br />

consented by the<br />

Waimakariri District Council<br />

latelastyear,and therace<br />

has been on since then to<br />

blend amix of produceand<br />

quality artisancrafts, to<br />

createapoint of difference<br />

withother markets in the<br />

region.<br />

‘‘Our approvedapplication<br />

was for150 stalls,’’ Marksays.<br />

has secured$<strong>20</strong>0,000 from the<br />

government’s Provincial Growth<br />

CapacityBuilding Fund to help<br />

develop the <strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> food<br />

and beverage sector.<br />

Part will go towardsthe fixed­term<br />

employmentofanew food and<br />

beverage business development<br />

manager,tasked with collaborating<br />

with private and publicagencies, iwi<br />

and members of the sector to form an<br />

industrygrouptosupport and<br />

promote the sector.<br />

ENC chief executiveHeather<br />

Warwick says her organisation has<br />

spent the pastyear developing alocal<br />

strategicpartner group in the food<br />

and beverage sector.<br />

‘‘This group has astrong desire to<br />

growsales of localproductata<br />

sustainable price point.<br />

‘‘They have identified anumber of<br />

areas in which theyneed assistance<br />

to achieve this goal,such as brand<br />

positioning, marketing, distribution<br />

and supply logistics, and business<br />

opportunities.’’<br />

The managerwill work with the<br />

group to achieve these goals and<br />

go on to create asolid <strong>North</strong><br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> industrygroupthat can<br />

ultimatelysupportitself.<br />

Ms Warwick saysthe new roleis<br />

essential for providing adirection to<br />

the burgeoning food and beverage<br />

sectoracross the <strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong><br />

region.<br />

“The <strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong>region,<br />

from Kaikoura down to the Waimakariri<br />

River, has an incredible arrayof<br />

food and beverage producers.’’<br />

She says bringing these businesses<br />

together to promote localfood and<br />

beverages will increase salesfor<br />

small localbusinesses, bring people<br />

to the region and ultimatelybenefit<br />

the wholeregional economy.<br />
