Great books. Award-winning wine. Happy days!
Robin Cook’s medical
thrillers are always
unputdownable ... and
Genesis doesn’t
disappoint. Chief Medical
Examiner Laurie
Montgomery has her
work cut out for her
when the body of a
10-weeks pregnant social
worker shows up on the
autopsy table. No one
knows who the father is,
or if he’s involved in her
death. And Laurie turns
to using DNA tracking to
try to catch the killer.
tale of how James’s solo crusade falls foul of
most terrifying – destroyer. It’s the story of ex-
deadly fight to protect Britain from this new
FOR THE LOVE
OF RUGS
Featherbrooke’s Nadine Lubbe quit her logistics career to turn her hobby into a business.
This incredible businesswoman shares her love of colourful rugs and being a homebody.
12 Get It Joburg West March 2020
Is there anything more blissful than a soft, fluffy rug
beneath your toes? We don’t think so... and Nadine’s
home is tastefully decorated with every rug you can
think of. We are talking shags, Persians and rugs that
bring a pop of colour to the room.
She quit her job in the logistics industry in 2017 when
she decided to turn her hobby of importing rugs from
all over the world into a unique niche business, which
she runs from a home office.
‘My business, Rugs & Such, started as a few Facebook posts;
however, I soon realised that people love rugs but that they don’t
know where to find them or simply don’t have the time to look
for them. I saw a gap in the market and designed a website with
an incredible search engine, so interior decorators and everybody
else can find their dream rug in no time.’
Her love of rugs evolved over the years as she moved from home
to home, and finally had more space. Each move brought the
opportunity to play with colours and patterns as she furnished
each new home.
‘I love how a rug can just tie a room together. I get overly excited
about some of the rugs my clients order and I will go to the ends
of the earth to find them the perfect rug because I know it is
going to be a special addition to their homes. I spend most of my
time barefoot on the floor so I feel most at home on a soft and
pretty rug. I want to share that feeling with the world.’
She has created the largest independent online website, just
for rugs. Not only can you choose from any shape and size
imaginable, but her newly launched ‘Custom Design Studio’
provides the opportunity to create your own rugs.
Although she has a love affair with rugs, her husband and three
children are the loves of her life.
‘Family is very important to me and travelling is a priority for our
family. We try to go skiing in the snow as a family at least every
year but my husband and I have also done a lot of travelling. My
favourite travel destinations we’ve been to are America, Italy,
France, Austria, Croatia, Vienna, Portugal, Mauritius and Turkey. I’m
very excited that we are going on another ski trip later this year.’
Nadine is not afraid of working hard and in her free time, this
44-year-old builds unique lights, exercises or catches up on sleep.
‘You don’t get a lot of free time when you are a mother and a
business owner, but my current goal is to prepare to run another
Two Oceans marathon.’
She has a very close-knit group of confidants because she
believes in having a deep friendship with a few people rather
than having a huge circle of friends. Her twin sister is her
best friend and they share a connection she is yet to find in
another friendship.
‘I’m very loyal and I’ll mess up anyone who tries to hurt my
loved ones. I’m also very invested in everything I do, and I tend
to overdo some things in all aspects of my life but I don’t see
anything wrong with that – it’s just who I am.’
Being a creative soul, her Bohemian and Moroccan styles reflect
not only in her clothes, but also in her home decor and in her
favourite rugs.
‘I just want to be happy and when I’m being creative with rugs, I’m
in my happy place ... I hope that one of our children will someday
take over this business as the empire I know it will become.’
Details: 082 338 0299 or follow her on Instagram, ‘rugs_and_such’
and Facebook, ‘Rugs & Such’.
Nadine’s tips to selecting the
perfect rug for every space
in your home:
• Measure twice, check thrice!
• The most important point in selecting a rug
for a dining room is that the chairs should never
move off the rug when being used. Be sure to
consider the size of the chairs as well. If you have
a table with extensions that are often used, it is
best to consider a slightly larger rug.
• When selecting a rug for an oval dining table
allow at least 70cm to 90cm around each
side of the table so that the chairs can be
accommodated.
• To find the perfect rug for your bedroom, it
is crucial to decide the layout that you prefer
and the feel that you want under your feet in
the morning. By having a 70cm to 80cm border
around the bed, you help your body transition
from a soft bed to your busy day.
• A bigger rug allows for warmth throughout the
room, and leaves room to play with your space
and enlarge the appearance of your setting.
• The living room is the perfect space to show
your own personal style and to explore new
design aesthetics. You can decide on one rug to
anchor the room, or several smaller ones to work
with the space. This allows you to rearrange later
on if you decide you want a change, but want to
work with what you already have.
• There are different padding options to allow a
rug to breathe, avoid unnecessary damage and
wear; or just add luxurious padding to create an
even more plush effect.
'GOALS'
Meet Helen D’Oliveira, an
artsy businesswoman and
mom from Muldersdrift
who did the Camino de
Santiago by herself. She
explains why setting goals
and standards is the secret
to happiness.
The word ‘can’t’ isn’t in
Helen’s vocabulary. Goaloriented,
determined
and feisty, she has
completely shattered the
stereotype that creative
people are disorganised
and all over the place. We have never
met a woman quite like Helen who
knows exactly where she is heading
in life.
She has been involved in building
Avianto Venue and Hotel’s brand
for the past 15 years and is the
mastermind behind For Goodness
Sake, Mustardseed and Moonshine,
Affordable Adventures Team Building,
Event Inspirations with partner Tasha
Schoeman, and her newest project, For
Goodness Bake, will be opening soon.
When we sat down for a quick cup of
coffee, Helen produced a journal full
of profound messages and tips for a
happy life.
‘I have started journalling daily – it’s
one of the many habits that you must
learn to be happy. You should also try
to be positive and kind, and of course,
eat healthily and exercise a lot.’
She discovered this recipe to
happiness while researching teambuilding
for her own staff.
‘We are stuck in the lives we live
ecause of the standards we set for ourselves. To
change that, you should start new daily rituals that will
contribute to your success. That is why I decided to do
the Camino de Santiago on my own in 2019.’
The Camino was everything but easy for this 46-yearold.
Second to raising her three children, this
800km walk she completed in 35 days was the most
challenging thing she has ever done.
‘When I started, I realised I was a bit overweight and
unfit, and there were a lot of seasoned walkers. I
was quite intimidated and the first 10 days were the
hardest. I wanted to give up almost every day but every
time I felt like quitting, my husband phoned me and
convinced me to put out my boots and clothes, go to
sleep and get up the next morning and walk again …
And I did it.’
She documented the whole experience on her blog
www.helendo.co.za throughout her journey and for
her, the best part and the worst part of the experience
were finishing.
‘I learned a lot about myself during the trip and I
realised that setting small goals and consistency were
key to completing it. I think that’s how you should
handle everything in life.’
Being a working mom is hard work, but Helen
wouldn’t have it any other way. She also teaches her
children to set goals for themselves and work hard to
achieve them.
‘When you are a mom, you are raising actual human
beings and you have to remember that every day,
especially when they are teenagers. I’m very proud of
who they are and the women they are growing up to
be. We recently set a new rule in our home that we have
to eat at least one meal together a day so we can be
more involved in each others lives.’
When Helen isn’t busy with her projects, businesses
or parenting, you can find her on a tuk-tuk or in a
restaurant in some side street in another country.
‘I enjoy seeing and experiencing culture, so when I
travel, I travel differently from other people. Rather
than driving in a car and staying in a luxurious hotel,
I’d be on a bicycle or motorcycle, taking it all in.
America, China, India and Thailand are just some of
my most memorable trips ... I try to get to know the
community. One thing I learned from travelling, is
that we are all people and we all experience the same
things. It doesn’t matter if you are the queen or if you
are Angelina Jolie, we all have to eat, sleep, brush our
teeth, go to the loo and raise our children. We are all
just human.’
Helen is the definition of a creative genius and has a
talent for making something beautiful out of nothing.
She is always busy making jewellery, dresses or pots,
but she also likes to work in the garden or create
delicious dishes in the kitchen.
‘My style is a bit eclectic and I’m not scared to try new
things. My love of earthy tones and raw material reflects
in my personal style as well as my creations. I don't
believe in following trends because I make my own.'
We will be keeping an eye out for Helen's future
projects as well as the opening of For Goodness Bake.
Helen visiting the wine tap at Bodegas
Irache along the Camino de Santiago.
Quick facts about Helen:
Do you prefer food, travel or art? I can’t
choose between the three so if I had it my
way I’d be eating in an art gallery in an exotic
country.
What is one thing no one knows about
you? I met my husband through a magazine
(... in the days before Tinder).
In what clique were you in school? I was a
nerd, but an exciting one.
Who is your hero? My husband.
Rain vs sunshine? Sunshine all the way.
CLASSIC BLUE
The Pantone colour of 2020, Classic Blue, is a timeless and deep shade
of blue. It can be characterised as minimal and simple yet striking,
especially in fashion. This shade of blue is relaxed and easy to wear.
Roodepoort's personal brand stylist, and hair and make-up artist, Erin Smylie, loves
Classic Blue. She describes the shade of blue as cool and relaxed, and says every
person probably already owns a piece of clothing in this shade.
ERIN SHARES HER TOP TIPS ON HOW TO INCORPORATE CLASSIC BLUE INTO
YOUR WARDROBE:
•
Classic blue is a bold, versatile colour to wear. Bodysuits and jumpsuits are an easy
way to make a big statement with this fun colour trend. If you need something more
formal, a well-tailored dress will be a great piece. For a slightly casual feel, a blue blazer
with a white T-shirt and jeans will be perfect.
• Bringing a trending colour into your wardrobe through accessories is easy.
You can jazz up any outfit with a blue cellphone cover, jewellery, a handbag or
notebook. Hair accessories are also a fun way to play with colour, and we have
so
many great options at the moment – from headbands to hair clips, scrunchies
and hair scarves ... You can play with different
accessories and see what works best with
your outfit.
• Shoes and bags are a good way to add a pop of
blue. Blue and black go perfectly together, so you
don't have to worry about what colour to wear it
with, and you can just buy a beautiful handbag or
classic stilettos and that's perfect for a night out.
• If you are adventurous, you can play around
with a blue eyeliner, or mascara. Adding a blue
colour pallette as a solid colour on your nails or
in
some nail art is also edgy.
Vegan
Plant-based
All of us are into healthy living and eating clean, but which is better – a vegan or
a whole plant-based diet? Krugersdorp’s dietitian, Chene van Rensburg spills the
beans on the good, the bad and the ugly of both diets.
Sharing her extensive experience in community nutrition,
clinical medical nutrition therapy, food service
nutrition therapy and nutrition research, Chene is
making the West Rand a lot healthier, one meal at
a time.
She is a registered dietitian and although many
people see dietitians as ‘food police’, Chene can be
tempted with a pizza any time. We are glad to hear
that just like any person who loves food (... who
doesn’t?) dietitians do enjoy the occasional
guilty pleasure.
‘I have worked in the industry
for seven years.
I am the new Pure
Health Dietitian
in Krugersdorp
and the new
Living Links
Dietitian
in Randfontein. In addition, I am part of an amazing
dietetic team at Netcare Krugersdorp Private Hospital.’
Chene is a people person and uses her passion for the
science of nutrition to make an immense contribution
to the community through nutrition advocacy, education
and clinical nutrition interventions.
‘The best overall health tips I can give someone is to
avoid processed foods and go back to fresh, whole
foods without added sugar, salt, preservatives, colourants,
flavourants and chemicals.’
She believes that a whole plant-based diet that excludes
processed foods and food products will be one
of the most prominent health trends in 2020.
‘I think diets like the Mediterranean Diet will make a
huge comeback since it is the ultimate example of a
whole plant-based diet where meat and animal products
are consumed in small amounts and not daily.’
Chene van
Rensburg
Hot tip: Chene suggests that if you want to make the
switch to a vegan or whole plant-based diet, you should
start by gradually reducing meat and dairy intake, eating
an entirely plant-based meal once a week or swapping out
one animal product for a plant-based one.
Vegan diet
Donald Watson coined the term ‘vegan’ in 1944 to describe
someone who fully abstains from all animal products for
ethical reasons. Over time, more and more people have
started to adopt the vegan diet for reasons other than
animal welfare, such as their health and the environment.
HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW:
• A vegan diet is strictly against animal products in every
form. Not only do vegans not eat meat, chicken, fish, dairy,
eggs, animal fats, gelatine derived from animal sources
or honey, they also do not wear animal products or use
products tested on animals.
• This diet is known for the higher nutrient content of the
foods consumed, weight loss, stabilisation of blood sugar
levels, improved kidney function, protection against cancer
and cardiovascular diseases, and a reduction in inflammatory
conditions such as arthritis – if followed correctly.
• Although some people thrive on a vegan diet, it is
considered an extreme diet because of how many foods it
excludes, as well as the potential for nutritional deficiencies,
which can lead to hormonal disruptions, increased
risk of leaky gut syndrome, risk of anaemia, greater risk of
depression, vitamin B12 and zinc deficiencies, too much
carbohydrates, and risk of eating disorders such as orthorexia
which is characterised by an over-fixation on healthy
eating patterns.
Whole plant-based diet
With a whole plant-based diet, the vast majority
of food comes from plants. There is no ethical
connotation to this diet and it doesn’t necessarily
mean that you have to eliminate animal
products completely.
HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW:
• This diet is centred on whole, unrefined or
minimally refined plant foods and excludes or
minimises meat, dairy products, eggs, and highly
refined foods such as bleached flour, refined
sugar, and oil.
• Nutrition research has found that plant-based
eating diets that offer all the necessary protein,
fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals for
optimal health are often higher in fibre and phytonutrients,
and reduce cardiovascular disease,
metabolic syndrome, diabetes, certain cancers,
depression, and in older adults, a decreased risk
of frailty, along with better mental and physical
function.
• Unfortunately, this diet also has risks such as
deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron,
protein and omega-3 fatty acids, but it can be
readily overcome by choosing the right plantbased
foods and, when necessary, supplements.
Butternut quinoa salad
Ingredients:
250ml dried quinoa; 425ml water;
5ml garlic powder; 6 cups butternut,
peeled, seeded and diced into
small cubes; 1 medium red onion,
diced; 15ml olive oil; 125ml dried
cranberries; 125ml raw pecans; 2
handfuls of baby kale; 60ml orange
juice; 2,5ml cinnamon; mineral salt and
fresh ground pepper, to taste; a handful of
pomegranate seeds (optional)
Method:
Heat the oven to 200°C. Spread the
butternut and onion on a baking sheet
lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with
oil, sprinkle with 2,5ml of the garlic powder,
the mineral salt and pepper. Roast for about
20–30 minutes, stirring once or twice. When
tender, remove from the oven and sprinkle
the cranberries on top.
boil. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer
to a gentle boil for 15 minutes. Remove from
heat, uncover and let rest for 15 minutes.
In a small bowl, combine the orange juice
and cinnamon.
In a large serving bowl, add the quinoa,
butternut squash mixture, kale and pecans.
Drizzle with the dressing, and toss to
combine. Season with salt and pepper.
250ml almond milk; 60ml chia seeds;
30ml cocoa powder; 15ml maple
syrup; 2,5ml vanilla extract; pinch of
as they absorb the liquid.
Indoor
elegance
Indoor plants are natural, living decor, bringing a room to life, changing the mood, and
adding colour and texture. Here’s how to use it to create a beautiful, tranquil space.
Trending trees
Indoor trees are the
hottest trend in interior
scaping. Weeping Fig
(Ficus benjamina) is
a popular indoor tree,
growing up to 2m,
with arching stems and
glossy green leaves.
Good for a light corner,
on either side of a
window, well-lit passage
or patio. Plants need
moderate watering, and
liquid fertiliser once a
month in summer. Spritz
the leaves to keep them
dust-free. Light-green
leaves indicate a lack
of nutrition. Leaf drop
may be caused by under
or over-watering, or a
change in temperature.
The dark side
ZZ plant (Zamioculcas) grows just about
anywhere, including in areas of low light,
although it does better in brighter light. It
is also valued for its air-purifying qualities.
Plants can survive an amazing amount
of neglect, because they need very little
water, especially if grown in low light. Let
the soil dry out between watering. A spritz
of water on the leaves helps with humidity
and removes dust. Give them a liquid feed
once in spring and again in summer.
Peace in the home
The peace lily (Spathiphyllum) not only
removes certain household toxins but also
filters unpleasant odours and produces
clean oxygen. This compact, well-shaped
plant fits any decor style. Needing only
low light to grow, it’s ideal for bathrooms,
bedrooms and kitchens. Water once a week,
and don’t over-water. It is sensitive to cold.
Indoor elegance
There is nothing more
graceful or elegant than
Phalaenopsis (Moth
Orchid). Grow plants in
glass containers to display
the roots. Plants flower
for up to three months
and are easy to care for.
They need strong, bright
indirect light, and high
humidity for the best
growth and flowers. Drop
two ice-cubes on the top
of the plant once a week;
this will supply enough
water. Alternatively,
run water through the
potting mix for one
minute every three to 10
days, depending on
the season.
Good for beginners
Sansevieria ‘Golden Futura’ always looks elegant, doesn’t
wilt, and doesn’t take up much space, which is why it has
become such a popular indoor plant with interior designers.
It is happy in a well-lit room or home office, and only needs
watering when the potting mix feels dry.
Indestructible
anthuriums
You don’t need green fingers to
keep anthuriums alive. They last
indoors for many years, needing
bright indirect light in a warm
room. Let the soil dry out slightly
between watering and don’t let the
plant stand in water. There are large
as well as dwarf varieties in a great
#SpekboomChallenge!
This challenge is set to make big waves on the
local eco-conservation scene. Growing your own
Spekboom is as easy as breaking off a shoot of the
plant and potting it in some well-drained soil.
Ensure that your plant gets enough sunshine and it
should maintain its bright green appearance for years
to come.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
Start in your garden (or on your balcony) by planting
and propagating Spekboom.
Challenge friends – Take a picture of your Spekboom
plants and post it on social media. Add the hashtag
#Spekboomchallenge and tag friends and family to
challenge them to plant Spekboom plants too.
Make it a team project – Do you have access to a
communal garden where you live or work? Find out
if you can implement a #Spekboomchallenge and
invite colleagues or neighbours to help beautify the
space with Spekboom. It’s a great way to get to know
your colleagues and neighbours better.
Plant Spekboom at schools – Find out if
your children’s school is taking part in the
#Spekboomchallenge and how you can help.
Are you in?
Fun fact: The Spekboom plant only requires
250 – 350ml of water per year to survive!
Magic of Makalali
Some of the best sightings SA reserves can offer. Charismatic field guides.
And charming bush textures. An authentic African experience awaits ...
Compiled by: Daniella Graham
From seeking big and small game to telling bushveld tales, the field guides
take you on an extraordinary African adventure.
There’s something wonderfully romantic about Makalali River Lodge, and
the bathtubs that overlook the reserve are one of the highlights.
A Land Cruiser’s engine roars into
action. Hippos groan. Buffaloes grunt.
These are (some of ) the sounds of
Africa. They surrounded us recently as
we sat at a waterhole in the
26 000-hectare Aha Makalali Private
Game Reserve near Hoedspruit.
What was that? A lion growling? No,
it was someone’s stomach grumbling
… time for sundowners. It wasn’t long
before we were standing with a cool
G&T in one hand, a stick of dry wors
in the other. Aware of the wildness
around us.
On our first afternoon game drive we’d
already spotted two of the Big Five
and, during our short stay, we’d go on
to see a further two of these big game
animals, as well as a pack of wild dogs
hunting impalas.
We couldn’t possibly take credit for
spotting the game first – the field
guides and trackers are excellent (they
tell us they ‘eat their carrots’) and
they’ve a great sense of humour. When
the message ‘We want to see a spotted
leopard,’ reached our field guide during
a game of broken telephone, he
laughed heartily and joked, ‘Oh, you
want to see a spotted leopard? Today
we were going to look for a plain one!’
We learnt tourism group, Tourvest
is educating even more field guides
through a fully-sponsored course at
the Tourvest Field Guide Academy,
based at the reserve.
The field guides make sundowners
far from ordinary. On our last evening,
lanterns were set up in a circle at a
spot in the reserve. A gin bar to one
side. Comfy cushions scattered in the
middle. It was ‘Bush TV’ at its finest.
Impalas and wildebeest grazed a little
distance away, while daring blackbacked
jackals crept close to the
snack table, hoping to score a piece
The game-viewing experience continues at the
lodges, even while you take a cool splash in the pool.
Pictured here is the Main Lodge pool.
of biltong. They didn’t! As darkness
fell, we heard an unfamiliar sound …
another of the Big Five!
Yes, we’re bragging ... but with some
of the best game viewing South
African reserves can offer – trust
us – it’s tough to leave the game
drives. But the bush adventures
continue at Makalali. You can
choose to stay at the Main Lodge
or River Lodge – both are set in the
reserve without a boundary fence
which fuels your authentic African
experience. The décor, design and
textures at these lodges scream
bushveld, and swimming in any of
the pools becomes a game-viewing
experience. We watched warthogs
wallowing in the mud near the Main
Lodge pool.
At night, an African tale and piece
of sweet fudge were placed by our
turned-down bed. One night, we
found a little decorated box with
a cute handmade pottery animal
inside – ours was a zebra and there
are six others in the collection. This
lovely keepsake was crafted by
artists from Gala Star – a company
that enables underprivileged people
to improve their lives by making art
that’s sold in the tourism market.
The luxurious rooms at the main
lodge are hotel-like and cosy with
a spacious bathroom … and an
outdoor shower. You can get two
rooms with an inter-leading door –
handy for families.
Planning a romantic getaway?
Book for the River Lodge. Perfect
for a honeymoon! And fret not
when they don’t give you a key for
your room – you don’t need one!
The rooms’ design and decor are
charmingly bona fide bushveld –
think a mosquito net-draped bed,
cosy fireplace and comfy seat on
the veranda. And you’ll probably feel
very, very clean because who could
resist a splash in the oh-so-appealing
outdoor shower, indoor shower and
bathtub overlooking the reserve.
The bathrooms are so impressive,
Make a booking
they have a bay window seating
area, for goodness sake!
A bush holiday isn’t really complete
without dinner in a boma … try the
sweet home-made bread and the
venison meat dishes which have
a uniquely African touch – think
kudu potjie or crocodile sosaties.
It’s definitely a ditch-the-diet kind
of holiday … in-between brekkie,
lunch and dinner there are pregame
drive snacks – like decadent
choc-chip cookies in the mornings
and afternoon high tea – as well as
bush coffees and sundowners in the
reserve.
In short ... when the toughest part
of your day is dodging wayward
hanging branches as your field
guide seeks a terrific sighting, you
know you’re in a magical place.
