Mark Ashurst is director of the Africa Research Institute. He spent six
years as the BBC’s Africa business editor and previously worked as a
foreign correspondent in Africa for the Financial Times, The Economist
and Newsweek. In 1995, he drafted Nelson Mandela’s opening address
to the Union of African Radio and Television Broadcasters’ first
conference in Johannesburg, where he worked in the strategic planning
unit of the South African Broadcasting Corporation during its transition
from apartheid propaganda machine to a public broadcaster. His radio
documentaries for the BBC include The Congo, a descent of the famous
river; Helping Ourselves, an enquiry into fair trade; and Crossing
Continents, a survey of Zimbabwean migrants in southern Africa.
