Five exceptional reads (and one fine, fine wine!)
Five exceptional reads (and one fine, fine wine!)
In Grown Ups, Marian Keyes introduces us to the Cawseys. Two brothers, their lovely, talented
wives and a host of children ... they’re a happy bunch. But under the surface, things are a little
murky. Bulimia. Compulsive shopping. One adoring husband, the other a bit of a sod. When
secrets are revealed they all have to take a good look at themselves. A wonderful read.
Penguin, R220 • After her entire family is gunned down following her
journalist husband’s tell-all profile about the drug lord of a new cartel,
You’ll smell fresh lime zest,
Lydia Quixano Pérez is forced to flee with her eight-year-old son. The
elderflower, freshly cut grass
two soon find themselves transformed into migrants, having to ride
and sweet bell pepper; you’ll
La Bestia ... trains that make their way north toward the United States,
taste Cape gooseberry and the only place they think they’ll be safe. A story about a mother on
green melon ... Steenberg the run – all too real, completely heartbreaking, Jeanine Cummins’
Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is American Dirt is absolutely gripping (and is massively controversial
vibrant and fresh and lively. in the USA). Headline, R302 • Every morning, four women swim off
Just like the conversation at an Australian beach. Theresa with two kids and a disintegrating
book club. Around R145 from marriage, lonely widow Marie, Elaine from England who’s finding it
steenbergfarm.com hard to settle, and 25-year-old Leanne with only herself to rely on.
The women become friends in The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming
Circle – a heart-warming tale of survival, laughter and true friendship
through good times and (sometimes very) bad. Sophie Green has
written a gorgeously fulfilling story. Little Brown, R325 • Who Did You
Tell? is Lesley Kara’s dark psychological thriller about Astrid, who, in
her battle against alcoholism, reluctantly moves back in with her
mother. Astrid’s focusing on recovery, going to meetings, confessing
her misdeeds, making amends to those she’s wronged. But someone
knows exactly what Astrid’s running from and won’t stop until she
learns that some mistakes can’t be corrected – mistakes you have to
pay for. Penguin Random House, R290 • Hiding from their stepfather
with his younger brother, Michael sees his stepfather driven away in
the trunk of a stranger’s car. As a witness to what results in a murder,
Michael is in danger – and as more bodies appear, it becomes clear
the killer wants vengeance. Karen Rose’s Into the Dark is a terrifically
gripping read! Little Brown, R180.
Live the tiki life
Inspired by the tropical exotica
of 1950s’ island-style cocktail bars,
this Copeland Tiki Gin has classic
London Dry ingredients (think
juniper, lemon peel and coriander)
making sure it is very much a
gin, but also has an exotic mix of
cloves, cassia and ginger - often
associated with spiced rums. The
addition of tonka bean, rummy
molasses and real pineapple adds
a deliciousness that takes you to
beach bar … Think tiki cocktails
like the Mai Tai and the Singapore
Sling. And what, exactly, is tiki?
Created in the 1950s by cocktail
legend Don the Beachcomber,
when post-war Americans were
looking for escapism. They found it
in Don’s kitschy beach decor, island
motifs and over-the-top drinks
served in mystical mugs with the
faces of Polynesian gods adorned
with exotic fruit and flowers. Hefty
pours of rum and potent secret
syrups made the tiki experience
a heady world to get lost in. But
tiki’s not just about rum. Many of
the cocktails included gin … so
hello Copeland Tiki Gin. Besides
cocktails, it’s perfectly happy
mixed with tonic and a signature
pineapple garnish – a dried or
fresh pineapple wheel, but other
exotic pairings are encouraged
… fresh juice blends or ginger ale
garnished with the vibrant, the
colourful and the exotic … edible
flowers, mint sprigs, whole star
anise and cinnamon quills. Sounds
appealing? Add to the experience
with a bottle of Copeland Rum.
Your drinks trolley, and your friends,
will thank you. R395 a bottle.
All the bubbles with none of the alcohol
There’s a massive trend globally towards a healthier lifestyle
and ‘mindful drinking’ – choosing low or non alcoholic drinks
for health and social reasons. Today it’s all
about having a choice and it has
become socially acceptable
and increasingly trendy
to opt for a non-alcoholic
drink in any situation.
So this month we’re
celebrating love with a
bottle of Robertson Winery
DRY Non-Alcoholic Sparkling
White… a refreshing bubbly
that’s not too sweet, and is
alcohol free. It tastes sensational …
delightfully dry with gorgeous notes
of pear and mandarin, orange blossom
and honeysuckle. You’ll find it for around
R50 to R55 at your local bottle store.
She grew up on the east side of Johannesburg
in Kensington, where she lived
for most of her life, just moving up and
down Highland Road, until she met
Lionel Hunter on May 10, 2005, and
everything changed.
“Lionel was a blind date and friends set
us up for dinner. I had come straight
from work and had no idea I was even
going on a date. I realised our mutual
friends had set it up when I arrived at
the well-known Vera Vita Restaurant in
Joburg South, and as we arrived my
friends said they had invited someone
to join us for dinner.
“I wish I had known - I looked like a total
nerd in my corporate shirt and jacket...so
not Lionel’s type well so I thought! Turns
out that though we were total opposites,
we are completely attracted.
“Two years later we tied the knot at the
beautiful Thaba Eco Hotel, the most
romantic Friday night winter wedding
ever,” said Shereen.
“We live on five acres of peace and tranquillity
in Walkerville. Lionel has pretty
much lived in the same area all his life,
and is well rooted.”
Shereen added, “When I met Lionel I
was working within a Bidvest company,
very much involved with corporate
business. After we got married and we
had Chelsea Grace, Lionel wanted me to
slow down, travel less and spend more
time at home.
“I did slow down and so left corporate,
then spent four years in fulltime ministry
at Christian Family Church International,
and when Chelsea went to Grade 00
eight years ago, I took the final step and
stopped working for someone else.
“For a year I stayed at home, and then
I started helping Lionel in his business.
“Eventually five years ago I started the
entrepreneurial journey, and started a
few businesses of my own.
“Hunter Group is a business that provides
PR, HR and IT support to companies
who do not have these resources
within, and so want to outsource them.
We are a onestop shop for business
managers and leaders who need help
taking their business to the next level.
“I am also a partner in Beata Promotional
Printers, a printing and promotional gifts
company based in Selby. Lionel and I
also started a sports promotion company
called Unleashed Combat Sports &
Events, and I am the founding member
of a non-profit company called It’s Not
About Me.
“Lionel and I help each other in everything. I am very analytical and have foresight,
and Lionel is very practical and has a gift that makes it possible to make
very complex issues simple for me.
“The fact that we come from two opposite sides of everything has added
tremendous value, and more often than not the right way forward for us is a
compromise that takes both views into account. In business Lionel and I are
both good at compromising - so that makes a huge difference.”
Family life
“Chelsea Grace was born in 2008. She is our love baby, prayed and planned for.
She turned my world 360 degrees to the right direction.
“She completely destroyed every selfish late bloomer mom (had her in my
30s) bone in my body. She was born the spitting image of her father, and in so
many ways is his carbon copy. To me, Chelsea Grace is an extension of her dad
when I look at her, and I could not be prouder.
“One word that describes our family – blended! Besides Chelsea, I have three
beautiful stepchildren, Logan, Cameron and Lacaela, our niece who has become
another daughter in our home, Tamryn, a daughter and son-in-law who
make my life so
easy, Zane and Minnie, and two picture-perfect grandchildren, Lionel Junior
and Karmenique.
“We are very close and fiercely protective of one another. I have enjoyed the
privilege of having these amazing souls pass through my arms and heart.
“I’ll never boast about being a perfect family. We are the typical Joburg South
neighbours, loud and full of drama at times, but I can say love lives with us, and
we are on a journey together, proud of each other and proud to be Hunters!”
One of Shereen’s absolute passions is helping people at all levels. “I love helping
the needy, but I am equally as passionate about helping people who seem
to need no help at all but who are actually hiding the issues they have behind
a mask of success.
“I think that is why I love my job at Hunter Group, especially counselling business
owners who feel like everyone expects them to have all the answers -
regardless of how irrational that sounds.
“I love being a sounding board, a shoulder to lean on, and the voice that reminds
them that everything will be okay, and even if it’s not, it’s okay.”
Where is your focus now?
“I think the older I get the more my focus is on my relationship with Christ and
being a pillar in my family. I have given the first part of my life to business and I
have no regrets about that at all.
“I loved my career foundation and travelling the world and all my studies. Now
in the latter part of my life I am very intentional about imparting what I know
to others, balancing life with the choices I made to marry and serve in my marriage,
and to be the best mom I can be to Chelsea. First place God, secondly my
husband, then our children. Everything else follows.
“When I am not at work I am always at home with Lionel and the children. I love
quality time and making memories.”
“If they are all busy, which happens from time to time, I will only be found doing
one other thing, reading.”
Shereen said she’s not really a hobby person, nor a collector or a creature of
habit. “The only thing I love to repeatedly do is travel. That I love, love, love.
“Our favourite restaurants are the Courtyard at Vera Vita, obviously. Angelo and
Kim are like family; they are, after all, responsible for creating the atmosphere
for our blind date and 15-year (so far) relationship!
“Then no one makes a Rib Pizza like Gino’s, shopping is definitely Mall of the
South on a weekday; I don’t like busy shops ever. Date nights are important
to us and we love booking in at Thaba Eco Hotel for a dinner, spa treat and
stay-over.
“And if I am alone, the Pyramid Day Spa is a good hideout for me. Oh, and I am a
loyal client to JJ Cale in Mall of the South for Yankee Candles. And, you won’t beat
Walkerville Meat Market, who supply the best meat quality and great service.”
As Shereen rushed off to her next appointment, the ever-calm woman she is
kept it all together, “Life is a balancing act, learn to balance and you’ll never fall.”
For the love of
THE GAME
It was her love and passion for
sport that led Mieke Coetzee
to develop a sports programme
for children.
Mieke grew up in Brackenhurst,
Alberton, and matriculated
from Hoërskool
Dinamika. Ever since she can
remember she enjoyed
being active, participating in many
different sports.
“We were always encouraged to participate,
and at an early age I realised that
sometimes you win and sometimes you
lose, but you can decide how you react
when you lose. My parents attended
most of our sports events and always
cheered us on. My younger brother,
Ockert, and I used to play action netball
together. We had so much fun, as we are
equally competitive.”
Mieke wanted to share her passion for
playing and coaching with the youth
and motivate them to follow a healthy
and active lifestyle.
She believes participation in sports
creates friendships that last a lifetime.
Children gain confidence and learn how
to deal with losing and stress and how
to cope under pressure.
“My late grandfather, Oubaas Coetzee,
who was well known in the athletics
circles in the Vaal Triangle and the South
African Athletics Association, inspired
me to not only play sports, but to go
into education and coach sports. He was
involved in the first athletics coaching
course in South Africa in 1961.”
Brackenhurst sports coach Mieke Coetzee is making it her mission to help
young ones to become active in a fun environment.
...at an early age I
realised that sometimes
you win and
sometimes you lose,
but you can decide
how you react when
you lose
Her involvement in sports coaching and
umpiring at an early age and her subsequent
studies in education naturally
progressed to the birth of Active Kids
Sport Academy (AKSA).
“Starting your own business is challenging,
but at the same time very rewarding.
I very early on realised one will make
mistakes and is allowed to take a detour
as and when required.
“AKSA is still in its formative years, but
in the past three years a lot of time has
been spent on automation of our back
office processes and the compilation of
our various programmes.
“None would have been possible
without the input of various role models,
educators, peers and friends. My vision
is simple: to see young, confident,
self-assured and well-balanced children
throughout our society.”
Loving life
“I love to travel and explore different
countries, especially solo travel, which
has made me independent. I also love
connecting with people from different
cultures and backgrounds.
“I started au pairing back in 2014 and
have been blessed with a great family.
Both children are in their teens now.
I have learnt a lot when it comes to
responsibility and teaching them how to
be independent.
“I enjoy running half-marathons, playing
hockey, netball and hiking over weekends,
but when I am not active I enjoy
visiting new places in Johannesburg and
socialising with friends and family.
“All in all, I love my life and up to now,
what a life it has been!”
What are the benefits of the programme?
Participation in sports creates friendships that last a lifetime. Children gain
confidence and learn how to deal with losing and stress and how to cope
under pressure. Furthermore, it improves coordination, gross and fine motor
skills as well as midline crossing to help with reading and writing. Children
learn discipline, teamwork, leadership skills, better hand-eye and foot-eye
coordination and improved balance.
Born and raised in Brackenhurst, Nasrene
Khan is now living in Glenvista
and she recently released her debut
EP, Girl with Feelings – something she is
extremely excited about.
“I don’t ever remember when I was not
into music and I’ve always been fascinated
by how a song comes together.
Being an artist is something I’ve always
wanted to be,” she said.
As a singer and songwriter she draws
her inspiration from artists such as
The Corrs, Avril Lavigne and Michelle
Branch, but it was pure passion that
made her decide to pursue a career as
an artist.
If she could collaborate on a song with
someone right now, it would be Black
Coffee. “He is a South African artist
who does very well internationally and
I just love the vibe I get listening to his
music,” the pop artist said.
She admires The Script because
their lyrics are always so inspiring
and motivating.
If there is one thing she could change
about her industry, it would be for
others to have more appreciation and
respect for each other’s crafts and, of
course, to support each other more.
Making a name
In July 2019, Nasrene signed a
global exclusive artist deal with
internationally renowned label David
Gresham Records.
Subsequently, she released her debut
single, Break the Ice on October 18
while at the Amsterdam Dance Event
(ADE), garnering immediate attention
from top playlists around the world on
major platforms such as Spotify, Apple
Music and Deezer.
During ADE, Nasrene was invited to
write and record with influential Dutch
publishing companies BMG Talpa,
Cloud 9 Music as well as Armin van
Buuren’s Armada Music Publishing.
She also attended a song-writing
good
From a
place
She is driven by her love and passion for writing
meaningful, relatable songs and is slowly but surely
making her dreams as an artist come true.
camp in Norway in 2019, where she
had the opportunity to work with
phenomenal international artists. This
allowed her the opportunity to make
her debut, not only as a songwriter but
also as an artist.
Creating the masterpiece
Nasrene’s music ranges from alternative
to electronic pop. She usually
starts with a melody for a song and
then the lyrics follow.
“I want my music to be catchy but also
really relatable. People should feel the
songs came from an honest, good
place,” she said.
“For example, Love You Through the Pain
was written about my relationship with
love itself. It’s a reminder that love is
so complex with so many sides to it
and there are many different ways of
showing love.
“And in all these different ways that
you can love, you are vulnerable to being
hurt, but you have to love anyway.
It is, after all, a fundamental part of
what makes us human.
“I am proud and happy to share this
part of me with whoever will listen,”
Nasrene said.
A personal note
“Growing up in a family with an Indian
background, it was not always easy to
pursue my dream of becoming a pop
artist, but thankfully I have very supportive
parents who cheered me on,”
she said.
“My family just wanted me to finish my
studies before going 100 per cent into
the music industry. Therefore, I finished
my degree in pharmacy.”
In her spare time, she likes to watch
Netflix, read a good book or bake
something tasty.
The best advice she’s ever been given is
that hard work, perseverance and commitment
always pay off.
Her message to her fans is they should
not limit themselves when it comes to
pursuing their passion. “You can be anything
you like as long as you work hard.”
Nasrene lives by the motto “Trust the
timing of your life.”
Introducing our own
VILLAGE CHEF
Chef Zulu, as he became known in the culinary industry, left the rolling hills of the Newcastle
countryside for the hustle and bustle of the city to realise his dreams of becoming a chef.
Text: Criana van der Walt. Photo: TBF Advertising.
Phephisani Sangweni’s mother passed
away when he was just a boy and he
soon had to learn how to cook for his
two brothers and sisters.
He admits making pap at the tender
age of 10 was not the epitome of modern
cooking skills, but his experiments
with sauces and meat dishes soon
made him the favourite family cook.
“I think it was turning an average dish
into something tasty, using the few ingredients
we had in a rural countryside,
that made me an innovative cook. My
stews were legendary and it seemed to
attract people from the neighbourhood
for dinner, people we hardly even knew.
“The joy everyone experienced from my
efforts laid the foundation for my love of
food and hospitality,” he said with
a smile.
Phephisani left the countryside and
settled in the greater Alberton area
and kept doing what he loved most -
reading food magazines and watching
cooking shows on TV, finding inspiration
from celebs such as Marco Pierre
White, British chef, restaurateur, and
television personality.
“I find inspiration from what international
chefs do, but I never copy them and
always have my own interpretation.”
Climbing the ladder
After his first appointment at McDonald’s,
he soon became ‘Chef Zulu’, an
endearing name he’s accepted
ever since.
From those humble days of scullery
service at McDonlad’s, he soon learnt
maintenance, cleaning and safety skills.
He then applied for a position as griller
at the (then) Mike’s Kitchen. “Not
knowing a single thing about grilling,”
he said, laughing.
Chef Zulu soon figured out the fine art of grilling and landed a position at the famous
Brown’s of Rivonia Restaurant.
Observing and sharing the skills and secrets under the wing of an international chef,
his own skills grew.
At the time, Chef Zulu cooked for then Vice-President Cyril Ramaphosa, an event
which is entrenched in his mind.
After completing a short course in hospitality through CTIA, he ventured into the
culinary world as chef de partie and head chef at a number of restaurants in Pretoria,
Newtown (Johannesburg), Heidelberg and today he is head chef at Molly’s Speakeasy
Village Restaurant in the historical village of Henley on Klip.
Molly’s Speakeasy is a quaint and cosy restaurant, nestled among the trees in a lovingly
restored, 102-year-old cottage.
Food brings people together
“Cooking after a long week in the
kitchen is not a challenge, but spending
time with family and friends at home,
enjoying a meal prepared by someone
else, with their own secrets is what
makes life interesting.”
If he had to choose his favourite food, it
would be a simple starter of prawn cocktail,
dusted with fresh bread crumbs,
gently deep-fried and served simply
with soy sauce on the side, followed
by a portion of Norwegian salmon,
seasoned with honey-glazed ginger,
gently grilled, and served with sautéed
Scottish potatoes.
He’d finish it all off with a classic
tiramisu and a single espresso.
Sharing secrets
We asked Phephisani if he’d share the secrets of one of the great meals served
at Molly’s Speakeasy.
“I am very proud of the Mansize Rib-Eye Steak we serve at Molly’s.
“We use perfectly matured rib-eye, with the bone on. Leaving the bone on
gives the meat more flavour,” he said.
Tips for making a great pan-fried steak
• Insist on matured meat – we use 22-day wet-aged matured steak only.
• Never let your butcher cut a thin slice of any cut of meat. Make sure it’s at least 3.5
cm thick.
• Get a thick-bottom skillet pan to medium-high heat.
• Make sure your meat is at room temperature before you start.
• Season liberally with coarse salt and cracked black pepper, both sides and on the
fatty edge.
• Drop a knob or two of butter in the pan along with fresh thyme – this will allow the
herb fragrance to infuse into the meat.
• Fry one side for 4-5 minutes for a medium-rare steak, occasionally lifting to check if
you’ve achieved that great dark caramelised surface.
• Press the meat gently with your finger to gauge resistance – the more resistance to
the touch, the more it is cooking.
• Never cut into a steak to see if it is done, you will lose valuable juices.
• Fry the other side 4-5 minutes.
• When done, crisp the edge of the steak — the fatty edge – by holding the steak on
its side and pressing down with a pair of tongs.
• Take off the heat and let rest for five minutes while you plate your accompaniments.
• Cut steak with a razor-sharp knife – sawing through meat with a blunt knife is the
easiest way to destroy your beautifully grilled steak.
What’s for dessert?
Chef Zulu is quick to recommend
his home-made lemon meringue,
made from a freshly crushed biscuit
base, made with home-made butter,
with a filling made from freshly
pressed lemon juice, and locally
sourced fresh farm eggs.
To round of the meal the Mansize
Rib-Eye steak pairs exceptionally
well with Groenland’s Classic Range
‘Marie Antoinette’, a masterful
blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and
Merlot, a red gentle enough to enhance
the subtle buttery and herb
flavours from the gentle seasoning
yet bold enough to make the
melt-in-your-mouth steak flavours
come to life.
All things
Sally Mulligan, who lives in Walkerville in the South of Johannesburg, is a well-known
herbalist within the community and is married to Kevin.
and as a stimulant.” Sally stresses all herbs should be taken with caution and
after consulting with your doctor.
They have two children, Geraldine
and Andrew, and six grandchildren,
Kieran, Shannyn, Ethan, Callum, David
and Jonathan.
Since Sally was a young girl she’s
shown an interest in gardening and
would potter for hours in the family
garden. “Sixteen years ago we began
our little nursery and that is when
I really became interested in
growing herbs.
“Although I grow lots, I do have my
favourite herbs and lemon verbena is
one. It’s fantastic to make a tea from
the leaves and this is good for digestive
and nervous upsets. I also dry the
leaves and put them in my cupboards
at home to repel fish moths.
“Origanum and marjoram are superb
digestive herbs and they are excellent
for colds, flu, nausea and exhaustion.
Rosemary has an anti-inflammatory
action and is good for energy
Two of Sally’s favourite recipes using herbs
Rosemary hair rinse - Two cups rosemary sprigs to two litres of water. Simmer the
rosemary in water for 20 minutes. Strain when cool. Use as a final hair rinse after
shampooing. Massage well into the scalp. “My granddaughter regularly uses this
and her hair is lustrous,” said Sally.
lemon verbena massage oil - One cup almond oil, one cup lemon verbena leaves,
one tablespoon cloves. Simmer all ingredients in a double boiler for
30 minutes, stirring continuously, and press down the leaves. Cool, strain and put
into a sterilised jar. “Lemon verbena is also lovely as an iced tea,”
Sally added.
“I also use many herbs in my cooking as they add flavour and goodness. One of our
favourite dishes is spaghetti bolognaise, in which we use origanum, basil, thyme
and a little mint. Kevin reckons it’s the best he’s ever tasted,
but that could also have something to do with him being my husband,”
laughed Sally.
Where you can buy Sally’s herbs
“We sell our herbs at markets within the community and we are always at Niche
Community Market at the Walkerville Agricultural Showgrounds every Saturday
from 9am until 2pm. We also sell at the Emmarentia Hospice market on the last and
first Sundays of every month at the Checkers car park on Barry Hertzog Avenue.”
Enjoying life
When Sally isn’t busy growing and selling her herbs, she loves to be with her family
and friends. “Even though growing herbs and looking after our nursery takes time,
I still look after my twin grandsons, who are now two years old. I enjoy every day I
can spend with them in the outdoors, planting and having fun in the potting soil
and compost. They are definitely taking after me with their gardening skills and like
nothing more than getting their hands dirty and watering the garden. I have high
hopes they will grow up to take after their grandmother and enjoy the garden and
herb growing, but let’s see,” said Sally.
WE’RE PLANTING … Nemesia ‘Nesia Denim’, which is fragrant
with large, dark blue blooms. It pairs well with other perfumed
autumn and spring annuals such as pansies, alyssum and stocks.
With its open, semi-upright growth (30cm high and wide), it can
be used as a soft border for other plants with broad, upright
Prepare your
GARDEN
Top tips of what you need before the winter season arrives.
INDOOR PLANT OF THE MONTH …
Cyclamen is a traditional indoor winter flower, but none are as flashy as the new
‘Indiaka’ range with their two-tone colour contrasting blooms, extra flower power
and compact growth. Plants flower best if given bright indirect light in a warm room.
Don’t over water, but keep the soil slightly moist. If the pot is in a saucer, empty the
saucer 30 minutes after watering. Fertilise once a month with a liquid fertiliser for
flowers. Remove dead flowers by pulling out the stem from the base of the plant.
This will encourage it to produce more flowers.
Reasons to visit
Emdoneni Lodge 5Everyone loves a little bush getaway now and then. Couple that with an up-close-andpersonal
wild cat experience, a long walk along a pristine beach to visit a bat cave and a
sunset cruise with hippos and crocs . . . and you’ve got a holiday worth remembering.
1
Ideal location
With the big five Hluhluwe/iMfolozi
Game
Reserve and South Africa’s
first UNESCO World Heritage Site,
the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, just
a stone’s throw away, Emdoneni
Lodge couldn’t be more perfectly
positioned for a wilderness and
adventure-filled holiday. After just
a short two-and-a-half-hour drive
from the King Shaka International
Airport, visitors can completely
immerse themselves in a haven of
natural beauty unlike anywhere else
in the world.
Smiles, song and
creature comforts
The rooms are quaint and
cosy, the food wholesome and
comforting and the staff full of smiles
at Emdoneni Lodge. The privately
- owned, three-star lodge’s accommodation
options include standard or
deluxe chalets, African-style rondavels
or the private Windfall Cottage.
Dinners are either in the restaurant or
alongside a bonfire in the beautiful
outdoor boma area, where you can
sip a good glass of red wine as you
tuck into a yummy dinner and enjoy
being serenaded by the multi-talented
kitchen and bar staff. Breakfasts are
a treat with all the trimmings, including
yummy home-made croissants
and pastries.
Close up with the cats
There are few times in one’s life
when you can stand right next
to two cheetahs as they laze and
roll about, gently gnawing on each other’s
ears. One of the main drawcards for visitors
to the lodge is, of course, the on-site
Emdoneni Cat Project (now called Zululand
Cat Conservation), which has been in
operation for more than 25 years. Guests
visiting the project are given a guided tour
of the facility and invited to get up - close
- and - personal with the cheetahs, African
wild cats, caracals and servals on the property.
There is no petting allowed and, since
its inception, more than 40 cats have been
successfully released back into the wild.
4
Delicious homegrown
spoils
Nothing beats delicious,
sweet home-grown treats. And Emdoneni
(and Hluhluwe) are home to
two amazing natural spoils – honey
and pineapples. Bee-autiful Honey
(all-natural, hand-extracted honey
made by the busy bees living in the
surrounding bush at Emdoneni) and
Mama Annanas pineapple products
(including a to-die-for spicy pineapple
relish, dried pineapples and pineapple
juice) are must-tries!
5
Wilderness adventures
The small coastal town of St Lucia,
less than an hour’s drive from
Emdoneni, is a treasure trove of
natural beauty and protected wilderness.
It is not uncommon here to see hippos
strolling down the street or spot rare and
endangered birdlife in the surrounding
coastal forest. The town borders the iSimangaliso
Wetland Park, home to four of the big
five and 220km of protected coastline. A
walk along Mission Rocks beach is a must.
Clamber over the rugged rocks as you head
north along the pristine beach towards the
sea caves that are home to thousands of
fruit-eating bats. Enjoy lunch at a Cape Vidal
picnic spot under the trees before enjoying
a swim or snorkel in the warm Indian
Ocean. And then, what better way to end
the day than with a sunset cruise along
Lake St Lucia, sipping G&Ts as you watch a
family of hippo frolicking half-submerged
in the water before they slowly emerge to
graze at dusk? Sheer African paradise.
