Introduction
With their international projects, the publishers of this book, Kurt Ries and Gabriele Walter, regularly curate large-scale art events in different locations in Germany.
The project "A Fine Art Journey – Touring the World through Art" was shown as an on-screen presentation in several art installations. Artists from around the world
had been invited to reflect on the subject of traveling and contributed their insightful individual perspectives. They were asked to create relevant artistic works
without imposing restrictions on their specific content. This makes the book different from conventional illustrated travel books. Embarking on this artistic journey,
the destination was not so much a location as an individual symbol that differs from person to person and is deeply rooted in their soul. As part of the book project,
an international jury presented 16 awards. The award-winning paintings can be viewed at www.enterintoart.com . The winning artists were also rewarded by being
featured in blog entries on the German website www.meditaterra.de, and the top four paintings appear in the book’s cover design (cover, back cover, and title page).
Einleitung:
Die Herausgeber des Buches, Kurt Ries und Gabriele Walter, haben mit ihren internationalen Gemeinschaftsprojekten rund zwanzig umfassende Kunstevents an
verschiedenen Orten in Deutschland kuratiert. Das Projekt „A Fine Art Journey – Weltreise mit Kunstbildern“ wurde in mehreren Kunstinstallationen als Bildschirmpräsentation
gezeigt. Es legt den Fokus auf das Thema Reisen, um es aus der einfühlsamen Sicht von Kunstschaffenden rund um den Globus zu reflektieren. Gemäß
eigener Interpretation sollten einschlägige Kunstbilder präsentiert werden, ohne sich thematisch eingeengt zu fühlen. Damit befinden wir uns in diesem Buch auf
Abwegen herkömmlicher Reisebildbände und Globetrotter. Das Reiseziel ist hier nicht die Destination, sondern eher ein Ursymbol, das den Menschen ausmacht. Im
Rahmen des Buchprojektes wurden von einer internationalen Jury sechszehn Preise vergeben. Die Bilder der Preisträger werden auf der Website www.enterintoart.
com in hervorgehobener Weise präsentiert. Sie wurden mit Blogbeiträgen auf der deutschen Website www.meditaterra.de prämiert. Darüber hinaus fließen die
ersten vier Preisbilder in die Buchgestaltung ein (Cover, Cover-Rückseite und Titelseite).

It is mainly distance and freedom that we find
when we travel. Freedom is also an essential part
of being creative and embarking on any artistic
act of creation, usually coupled with inspiration
originating in our fascination with the unknown.
Without moving, we cannot change and grow,
we get stuck. The well-traveled author Mark
Twain said: “Travel is fatal to prejudices”. And
maybe, the most dangerous way of looking at the
world is not looking at it at all. As human beings,
we have two sides: a static side feeling settled at
home inhabiting a house and a plot of land, and a
moving side constantly drawn toward the path of
longing. Longing, however, takes us beyond this
world, it embodies our desire for change and our
desire for knowledge and experience. And yet,
Rainer Maria Rilke known as a homeless, traveling
poet, saw “hometurning on every way.”
In addition to cultural exchange and health,
traveling also brings knowledge and inspiration.
On their “Grand Tour”, young adults during
the Renaissance period were supposed to learn
things like entrepreneurial spirit, courage, leadership,
decisiveness, etiquette, and, last but not
least, foreign languages. In the 18th century, the
“Grand Tour” led from England across Germany,
and along the Rhine to Italy. This was also the
time of emigration and colonization.
In the golden age of the haiku during the
17th century, Japanese poets and painters
went on group trips for pilgrimage and poetry,
writing poetic travel diaries, often illustrating
their poetry with drawings. Not much later,
many European poets and artists followed in
their footsteps, including Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe, Lord Byron and William Turner. In Italy,
Goethe the writer also turned to painting. His
sepia drawings from this time are famous. Once
again, we witness the fertile connection between
art, poetry, and traveling. Goethe traveled
there to Paestum, because he wanted to see
Greek temples. Although he did not make it to
Egypt, his “West-Eastern Divan“ is a poetic journey
whose starting point is Germany, basically an
imaginary journey.
This longing for the Orient was later taken up
by artists like August Macke and Paul Klee who
traveled to Tunisia. Before them, Paul Gaugin had
traveled as far as the South Sea. The charismatic
charm of inspiring places like Provence, Venice,
Paris, New York, Santorini and Tuscany attracted
flocks of artists and poets. Art history itself is a
constant journey toward new shores. In the 20th
century, a lot of music incorporated folkloristic
influences composers had brought home from
their trips abroad.
The year this book was compiled happened to
be the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin
Wall and the Iron Curtain leading to the unification
of Eastern and Western Europe. As a consequence
of political ideologies that have led to
a devastating war on the one hand and to absurd
limitations on traveling on the other hand, Germany
is not the only country where the issue of
traveling has recently taken on political dimensions,
especially in the context of the refugee crisis.
But if we try honestly to describe our inner life
and nature as human beings, we have to admit:
At the end of the day, we are all refugees. Some
for the understandable reason that they cannot
stay where they used to feel at home because it
has become unbearable there, others because
they are lucky enough to live in places not forcing
them to leave, but things can always change.
In spite of unforeseeable odds, our love of adventure
is often an important motivation to travel.
Being unable to travel leads to a melancholy
state of mind. The Persian poet Hafis encourages
us to escape from internal boundaries: “You yourself
are your own obstacle - rise above yourself.“
Because in one way or another, we all need to
“get away” sometimes. Considering the social
injustices in the world, “letting go” on a luxurious
cruise ship is a rare privilege. As long as we follow
Ernest Hemingway’s advice never to go on trips
with anyone we do not love, however, traveling is
definitely a great cure against sadness. Because
a remote place is always the land of unfulfilled
desires. Going there is the most wonderful way
of leaving our daily worries behind, an escape
to the careless country of our dreams, where a
change in climate and the healing of our liberated
soul can help our bodies regain balance and
recover.
Im Reisen leben vor allem die Ferne und die
Freiheit. Letztere will auch jeder Art von Kreativität
und dem künstlerischen Schöpfungsakt innewohnen,
nicht selten gepaart mit der Inspiration aus
der Faszination der Fremde. Denn wenn man sich
nicht bewegt, verwandelt und entwickelt man sich
nicht, man wird starr. Der weitgereiste Schriftsteller
Mark Twain meinte: „Reisen ist tödlich für Vorurteile.“.
Und vielleicht gehört zu den gefährlichsten
Weltanschauungen jene der Leute, welche die Welt
nicht angeschaut haben. Der Mensch hat zwei Pole:
Zum einen die Sesshaftigkeit, das Haus und das
Feld, und zum anderen die Wanderschaft auf dem
Weg der Sehnsucht. Die Sehnsucht aber führt uns
über diese Welt hinaus, sie verkörpert sowohl das
Verlangen nach dem Wandel als auch nach dem
Bewandertsein. Und dennoch ist für Rainer Maria
Rilke, welcher als „unbehauster“ reisender Dichter
galt, „auf allen Wegen Heimkehr“.
Neben kulturellem Austausch und Gesundheit
werden durch das Reisen immer auch Bildung und
Inspiration gewonnen. Schon auf der „Grand Tour“
seit der Renaissance sollten junge Angehörige des
europäischen Adels Fähigkeiten wie Unternehmensgeist,
Mut, das Vermögen, andere Menschen
zu führen, Entschlussfreudigkeit, Vertrautheit
mit Sitten und Anstandsregeln und nicht zuletzt
Fremdsprachenkenntnisse erwerben. Im 18. Jahrhundert
führte die „Grand Tour“ von England über
Deutschland den Rhein entlang nach Italien. Dies
war auch die Zeit von Auswanderung und Kolonisation.
In der Blütezeit des Haiku im 17. Jahrhundert unternahmen
die Dichter und Maler Japans dagegen
gesellige Pilger- und Dichtungsreisen, bei denen lyrische
Reisetagebücher verfasst wurden. Die Haiku-
Gedichte wurden darin auch bildlich skizziert. Den
japanischen Haiku-Poeten entsprachen in Europa
später dann die reisenden Dichter und Künstler wie
zum Beispiel Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Lord
Byron und William Turner. Goethe war als Poet in
Italien auch zum Maler geworden. Berühmt sind
seine Sepia-Zeichnungen aus jener Zeit. Auch hier
zeigt sich das fruchtbare Zusammenspiel von Kunst,
Poesie und Reisen. Goethe wollte griechische Tempel
sehen und fuhr deshalb nach Paestum. Und obgleich
er nicht bis nach Ägypten gelangen konnte,
schrieb er seinen „West-östlichen Divan" – eine poetische
Reise, deren Ausgangspunkt in Deutschland
lag, im Grunde eine Fantasiereise.
Jene Sehnsucht nach dem Orient wurde später
u. a. von August Macke und Paul Klee auf deren Tunesien-Reise
aufgegriffen. Zuvor war Paul Gauguin
gar bis in die Südsee gereist. Und schließlich konnten
dem Nimbus kunstbeseelter Landschaften und
Orte wie der Provence, Venedig, Paris, New York,
Santorini oder der Toskana ganze Maler- und Dichterscharen
nicht widerstehen. Auch die Kunstgeschichte
gleicht einer Reise zu neuen Ufern. Ebenso
erhielt zum Beispiel die Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts
durch das Reisen starke Anregungen aus der Folklore
verschiedener Völker.
Zufällig fiel das Jahr der Entstehung des Buches
mit dem dreißigsten Jahrestag des Mauerfalls in
Deutschland und der Vereinigung von Ost- und
Westeuropa zusammen. Als Folge diktatorischer
Ideologien, welche einerseits zu einem verheerenden
Krieg und andererseits zur absurden Beschränkung
der Reisefreiheit geführt hatten, erhielt das
Thema Reisen mittlerweile jedoch nicht allein in
Deutschland eine politische Dimension, vor allem
wenn es um das Flüchtlingsproblem geht. Denn
wenn man danach sucht, das Wesen und das Innenleben
einer Sache zu beschreiben, dann wird man
anerkennen müssen: Letztendlich sind alle Menschen
Flüchtlinge. Die einen, weil sie aus dem einen
oder anderen unerträglichen und daher nachvollziehbaren
Beweggrund nicht mehr dort sein können,
wo sie aufgrund von Heimweh eigentlich sein
möchten, und die anderen, weil sie das Glück haben
dort zu sein, wo es zur Zeit keinen Anlass zur Flucht
gibt, jedoch Zeiten können sich ändern.
Allen unvorhersehbaren Widrigkeiten zum Trotz
spielt nicht selten auch die Freude am Abenteuer
ins Reisen hinein. Wie dem auch sei, nicht reisen
zu können, macht wehmütig. Der persische Dichter
Hafis dagegen ermutigt zu einer Flucht aus unseren
inneren Zwängen: „Du bist deine eigene Grenze, erhebe
dich darüber.“ Denn in der einen oder anderen
Weise braucht letztendlich jeder die „Flucht“. Angesichts
der sozialen Ungerechtigkeit in der Welt ist
das „Loslassen“ in der Kreuzfahrt-Suite lediglich ein
Privileg. Unter Berücksichtigung einer Empfehlung
von Ernest Hemingway, niemals mit jemanden zu
verreisen, den man nicht mag, ist das Reisen aber
auf jeden Fall ein vortreffliches Heilmittel gegen
Kummer. Denn die Ferne ist auch immer das Land
der erfüllten Wünsche. Sie ist die wundervollste
Abkehr vom sorgenvollen Alltag, eine Flucht ins
Paradies des Traumlandes hinein, wo klimatischer
Wechsel und die Gesundung der befreiten Seele
zum körperlichen Ausgleich und Erholung führen
können.
