In Grown Ups, Marian Keyes introduces us to the Cawseys. Two brothers, their lovely,
talented wives and a host of children … they’re a happy bunch. But under the surface,
things are a little murky. Bulimia. Compulsive shopping. One adoring husband, the
other a bit of a sod. When secrets, are revealed they all have to take a good look
at themselves. A wonderful read. Penguin, R220 • After her entire family is gunned
down following her journalist husband’s tell-all profile about the drug lord of a new
cartel, Lydia Quixano Pérez is forced to flee
with her eight-year-old son. The two soon
find themselves transformed into migrants,
having to ride la bestia—trains that make
their way north toward the United States, the
only place they think they’ll be safe. A story
about a mother on the run … all too real,
completely heartbreaking, Jeanine Cummins’
American Dirt is absolutely gripping (and is
massively controversial in the USA). Headline,
R302 • Every morning, four women swim off
an Australian beach. Theresa with two kids
and a disintegrating marriage, lonely widow
Marie, Elaine from England who’s finding it hard
to settle, and 25-year-old Leanne with only
herself to rely on. The women become friends
in The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming Circle
– a heart-warming tale of survival, laughter
and true friendship through good times and
(sometimes very) bad. Sophie Green has written
a gorgeously fulfilling story. Little Brown, R325
dark psychological thriller about Astrid,
can’t be corrected – they need to be
Why would someone want to kill Kent
secret, too. He’s arranged for their daughter
to come home as a surprise guest. But he’s
heard some devastating news. Should he tell
Live the tiki life
Inspired by the tropical exotica of
1950s island-style cocktail bars, this
Copeland Tiki Gin has classic London
Dry ingredients (think juniper, lemon peel,
coriander) making sure it’s very much a
gin, but also has an exotic mix of cloves,
cassia and ginger – often associated with
spiced rums. The addition of tonka bean,
rummy molasses and real pineapple
creates a deliciousness that takes you to
a beach bar … think Tiki cocktails like the
Mai Tai and the Singapore Sling. What,
exactly, is Tiki? It was created in the 1950s
by cocktail legend Don the Beachcomber,
when post-war Americans were looking
for escapism. They found it in Don’s kitschy
beach decor, island motifs and over the
top drinks served in mystical mugs with
the faces of Polynesian gods adorned
with exotic fruit and flowers. Hefty pours
of rum and potent secret syrups made
the Tiki experience a heady world to get
lost in. But Tiki’s not just about rum. Many
of the cocktails included gin … so hello
Copeland Tiki Gin. Besides cocktails, it’s
perfectly happy mixed with tonic and a
signature pineapple garnish – a dried or
fresh pineapple wheel, but other exotic
pairings are encouraged … fresh juice
blends or ginger ale garnished with the
vibrant, the colourful and the exotic
… edible flowers, mint sprigs, whole
star anise and cinnamon quills. Sound
appealing? Add to the experience with
a bottle of Copeland Rum. Your drinks
trolley, and your friends, will thank you.
Sunday lunch just got even better
What’s a weekend without a Sunday lunch? And what’s a traditional South
African Sunday lunch without seven colours on your plate? The oh-soclassy
Marble in Rosebank has seriously upped the Sunday lunch stakes
and launched the fabulous Seven Colour Sundays. Think plates packed
with slow roasted lamb shoulder and scrumptious, fire-cooked veggies
in seven colours. We’re told the menu will change regularly – always with
that special Marble touch – and each time, one of the seven colours will
take centre stage of the décor and cocktails. At the first Seven Colour
Sundays event, ruby and rose took the spotlight … so we dressed up in
our little red number, sipped rosé bubbly and realised just how much
the bar’s been raised for Sunday roasts! We tucked into a really juicy
shoulder of lamb from the Josper and salted rib of lamb on the
coals. There’s nothing ordinary about the veggies … think mielies
with mushroom and caper butter, roasted cauliflower with tomato relish
and Healey’s Cheddar, and sweet carrots in sage butter. Of course the
meal wouldn’t be complete without Marble’s deliciously famous fries, and
the ‘breyani’ of rice, lentil and butternut was totally moreish. These Sunday
lunches are in partnership with Kaya FM … so with full stomachs and
happy hearts, we moseyed to the bar to groove to some soulful sounds
curated by the station’s Greg Maloka – and you can too from 4pm to 8pm.
Lunch is served from noon. R295 a person. Details: marble.restaurant
Just the
beginning
Shared recipes – and food – are at the heart of many happy
family memories for Naqiyah Mayat … and she gives us a taste
of them in her new cookbook
12 Get It Joburg Northern Suburbs April 20

Frequently compared to Nigella Lawson, Naqiyah Mayat is
a self-made food personality who’s just released her debut
cookbook, The Beginning: Indian Recipes from my
Home, currently on sale in bookstores.
How did she do it? ‘I started sharing my recipes as
one of the first food bloggers on Food24 more
than 11 years ago,’ Naqiyah says. ‘My posts were
a combination of what I cooked for dinner
and work lunches. I later moved on to sharing
recipes on my own website and on Instagram.
It was a slow and steady process. I learned
how to take better images, listened to what
my readers appreciated and valued from what
I shared, and translated this into a community of
people who looked at what I shared for direction.’
It goes back even further. ‘As with any cook, in their
childhood memory lies a kitchen, a simmering pot and at the
stove, a mum. This book is rooted in pride and dedicated to
my mother, who has served as my treasure trove of culinary
instruction. I knew I
From the start, I
wanted to
publish a book
that harnessed
the power of my
food memories
wanted to compile
and write a cookbook
when I realised I
would like to take
my food memories
and turn them into
the inspiration for
my culinary journey. I
wanted to share the
recipes I grew up with,
allowing my readers a
peek into my life.’
Family has always been
at the core of Naqiyah’s
cooking interests, and
this was strengthened when she got married. ‘When I was
growing up, my mum used powdered masala, but since I
married into a Muslim family, I’ve had to learn about other
spices like freshly ground wet masala. I was young when
I got married and for my marriage, I had to adapt what I’d
learned from watching my mum. I had to find common
ground, and this became the ‘Naqiyah way’. It might not
be your chicken curry, or my chicken curry, but now it’s our
chicken curry – it’s a place we choose to meet in the middle.’
The Naqiyah way thus invites readers to add their cooking
ideas into the mix when trying out her recipes, allowing
inspiration to take the lead in producing food that’s made
with love.
‘My relationship with, and connection to my husband, is
largely centred around food and it helps us communicate
in so many different ways. While our marriage has resulted
in some incredible food, it’s also produced four very curious
children, all with a voracious appetite for life. I’ve learnt
about food through what excites them and allowed them
an opportunity to taste and experience all types of food, so
they now have a positive relationship towards it. I’m inspired
by my food memories. For me, food has a magical way to
Make sure to get your
hands on a copy of Naqiyah’s
new cookbook, The Beginning:
Indian Recipes from my Home … we
were lucky enough to try her bhajia paired
with masala tea (pictured on cover). Mmm,
what a treat! Find this recipe as well as a few
connect and unify us. It’s the invisible thread that connects
us all,’ Naqiyah says.
‘From the start, I wanted to publish a book that harnessed
the power of my food memories – from growing up, to the
new discoveries made when I got married, and later the
shared experiences I had from cooking for my children.
Along this journey, I’ve amassed an incredible amount of
knowledge about food. I want my children to remember
me for the contributions I’ve made towards this purpose.
It’s a modest legacy, one which won’t necessarily change
the world, but will be remembered by those who’ve been
on this journey with me. The Beginning tells a story of my
community, of family, friends, online supporters and mentors
who’ve helped encourage me to become the person I was
destined to be.’
It’s clear that support means everything to Naqiyah, an
attitude she perpetuates in her social media interactions.
‘The best thing women can do for each other is to honour
individuality and intuition by appreciating, not judging,
each other’s choices. I want to change the narrative of how
women talk to each other.’
This April, Naqiyah is heading to Dubai to launch her book to
an international market. There are also developments already
in place for two additional cookbooks which will delve
further into her cooking style. It’s clear that her book is aptly
titled. For Naqiyah, this is, indeed, only The Beginning.
colour or soar with feeling. That’s why creativity is
one of the most highly valued traits in the workplace
of the future, according to creative consultant Lien
Potgieter of Lien Potgieter Creativity Consultancy.
It’s why she’s determined to help left-brainers start
thinking less linearly.
The problem, according to Lien, is that mere mention
of the word ‘creativity’ conjures up a host of stereotypes.
Many of these seem at odds with people who feel they
wouldn’t look good in a kaftan, don’t like the smell
of incense, or have no interest in trying to
paint a nude. In fact, she says, creativity
encompasses far more than the
activities traditionally associated
with it, like singing, dancing,
drawing and writing. ‘If you
have a knack for mediation
and resolving conflict,
that’s creative. So
too, is the ability to
make someone feel
empowered and
inspired, being an
amazing athlete,
feeling curious,
cooking something
fabulous or making
a house feel like a
home.’
Lien believes
everyone is
creative. The
problem is, we often
don’t recognise this
quality in ourselves,
because we tend to
take for granted the
things we’re good at –
which is often where our
creativity lies.
While it may feel challenging
to uncover our own creativity, it’s
important that we do so. Lien cites a report
by the World Economic Forum, which describes
creativity as one of the top 10 workplace skills of the
future.
How can you uncover your own secret source? Lien’s
starting point is basic self-care. ‘If you don’t eat well,
sleep well and exercise, you won’t have the energy or
fuel to think creatively,’ she maintains. Self-care also takes
into account factors which have a more subtle effect on
your well-being, such as temperature and fragrance.
Once your physical well-being has been taken care of,
it’s time to move on to emotional well-being. ‘People
always think of artists as tortured souls, but you’re more
reativity
lass
CDo you have a creative
genius lurking within?
Creativity expert Lien
Potgieter says the
answer is yes.
likely to think clearly, keep an open mind and remain
receptive to new ideas if you’re in a good mood,’ Lien
explains.
The next step in the process involves focusing on
critical thinking. ‘This phase is largely about seeing
and observing. Sometimes, you need to take a break
from what you’re doing to be able to do so. If you
overanalyse, the answers may be slow to come – but if
you allow yourself to daydream, you’d be surprised at
what floods into your mind.’
This may lead to learning new things, a process Lien
links to empathy and compassion. ‘Love is about being
able to see the heart in all things,’
she comments. She equates this
part in the quest to cultivate
creativity with openness and
making space for appreciating
fresh ideas.
Although Lien’s definition of
creativity goes well beyond
traditionally creative pursuits, it
by no means excludes them. She
encourages people embarking
on this pursuit to take part in,
or at least watch and enjoy, art
forms like opera and drama.
Again, she draws attention to
the creativity that’s present
in everyday interactions, from
the well-worded email to a
colleague to the small act
of kindness that brightens a
stranger’s day. Either way, what’s
important is that you’re expressing
what’s inside you.
Another way to harness this essential
quality is by listening to your intuition.
Once a quality easily dismissed in the
workplace, it’s slowly creeping to the fore,
thanks to support from the likes of Steve
Jobs. Linked to this inner voice is your vision for
your inner life – but unfortunately, neither is likely
to flourish in a hostile environment, which is why
kindness in the workplace is crucial if we are to nurture a
culture of creativity.
Lien’s final tip – daydream. Many of us guard against
‘the dwaal’ because we prefer the certainty of real life.
Google has made it possible for us to avoid surprises –
we can even choose what to order at a restaurant hours
before making a reservation – and the safety of this
world of assuredness is attractive during a time of flux.
The problem with this mindset is that creativity thrives
on spontaneity and being in the moment – which is
why daydreaming is so important.
Put these steps together – and you have a recipe
for a skill that could well future-proof your career.
Easy ways to cultivate your creativity
• Rearrange your desk or work space.
• Sit quietly in a public place. Watch the people around
you interacting. Imagine their conversations; think
of what their lives are like and what they might be
talking about.
• Spark your curiosity. Find something in your world
to research, then find out more about it. It needn’t be
anything complex – even learning extra facts about a
tree in your garden will get you thinking in a new way.
• Find synonyms for your favourite words, or look up
words you don’t understand.
Christina
the chameleon
impressionist
One woman. Many (singing) voices.
Meet Christina Bianco who populates
the stage all by herself.
Most of us have a particular gift – could be hulahooping
or maybe you really slay at beer pong. For
New Yorker Christina Bianco, her talent has become
her livelihood. It’s enabled her to travel the globe, meet
popular celebrities and appear on talk shows watched
by millions, thanks to her viral videos in which she does
spot-on impressions of renowned divas.
Where did it all start? At a high school party. ‘I remember
being at a party in high school and That’s The Way It
Is came on the radio,’ Christina says. ‘I started singing
along, slipping into a Celine impression and everyone
stopped talking. I remember seeing all their jaws drop
and they all circled round me to listen. I had no idea
what I was doing could be considered impressive. It was
just something that came naturally.’ Fast forward a few
years and these impressions became a career. ‘In 2007 I
decided to audition for the long running off-Broadway
show, Forbidden Broadway. I loved the show and grew
up going to see it and listening to the cast albums.
I’d never taken my impressions seriously before
but I thought, ‘what the heck. Go for it!’ So I
practised a few specific impressions for a
week leading up to the audition. I never
imagined I’d ultimately get the job and
be blessed to get such great reviews
and award nominations. It was only
then that I realised I could do a lot
more with impressions.’
It took a lot of hard work and
dedication to create an online
presence, in addition to performances
at various events and concerts. ‘Just
like that, one of the most off-thecuff
performance moments of my life
changed everything. I decided to post a diva
impression mash-up of Total Eclipse of the Heart
that was filmed around midnight in a rowdy New
York nightclub. I initially thought it was far too sloppy
and long to post but I decided to press that upload
button anyway and within a matter of minutes, it was
everywhere. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, all the biggest
news and media websites. The widespread coverage
led to me selling out four shows at The Hippodrome in
London and it caught the attention of people like Ellen
DeGeneres, who had me on her show. The rest, as they
say, is history. I’ve been able to travel the world doing
what I love, all because of impressions.’
Travelling the world is exactly what originally brought
Christina to South Africa. ‘My first trip to South Africa was
back in 2008. I was actually performing with Forbidden
Broadway on a cruise ship that included SA and finished
the journey in Cape Town. I only saw a few cities briefly
but I absolutely fell in love with SA and wanted to come
back. Thankfully, in 2015, I was asked by David Bloch
to perform at a big gala for Bidvest in Johannesburg.
During that process, I met so many talented performers
from all over SA. I was really impressed and quickly
realised what a strong artistic/theatrical community
there is in Joburg. The calibre of the production I was
part of was one thing but I also saw Sweeney Todd at
Montecasino and found myself thinking, ‘How can I
perform here?’ On a return visit to SA, for another private
event in Joburg, I made sure to see another show at
Montecasino.
I like to say my
shows are
a musical
comedy grab-bag
of fun!
This time it was
Chicago, and once
again, I fell in love
with the venue and
the entire spirit of
the creative team
there, encouraging
performing arts
in Joburg. I’m
truly honored to
finally play in this
beautiful theatre.
I’m especially grateful to David Bloch for his continued
support for me and what I do. I know I wouldn’t be
bringing Me, Myself and Everyone Else to all of you
without him!’
For one day only on Saturday, April 11 at the
Montecasino Teatro, Christina will be performing two
shows, at 3pm, and 8pm. Tickets can be bought at
Computicket. What can we expect? ‘In one show, you
can see all your favourite female vocalists and pop
culture personalities performing on stage together!
They’ll be interacting, performing their hits, performing
each other’s material, and even things you’d never
expect. For example, how would Edith Piaf sound
singing ABBA? Come along and you’ll find out! No
costumes, no wigs, no gimmicks, no auto tune. Just me
covering a wide range of musical styles and genres!
You can also expect classic songs in my own voice and
duets with the wonderful Craig Urbani, all under the
direction of the incredible Bryan Schimmel. I like to
say my shows are a musical comedy grab-bag of fun!
I believe imitation is truly the sincerest form of flattery
so everything is done with love. There’s a lot of heart,
along with the laughter. There really is something for
everybody. I can’t wait to share Me, Myself and Everyone
Else with the people of Johannesburg!’
A bright pink sign hangs outside
Claire Reid’s office, bearing a quote
from Robert Brault: ‘Why try explaining
miracles to your kids when you can just
have them plant a garden.’
It’s a philosophy she subscribes
to wholeheartedly. As the brains
behind Reel Gardening, she’s seen
first-hand that planting can teach
you about food production, health,
mental wellness, body image and a
connection with the earth – so it’s not
surprising that her heart rejoices when
her four-year-old son, Connor, runs to
check his latest harvest as soon as he’s
home from school.
This is very different from her own
childhood where, she says,
her own garden was ‘lush,
but not loved’. What her
parents lacked in green
fingers, however, they made
up for in entrepreneurial
insight. ‘My parents believed
that if you wanted pocket
money, you had to earn
it – but not by doing the
usual chores, which should
be taken care of anyway.
You had to do something
that would add value.’
Consequently, by the time
she was 15. Claire had
developed rather enviable
acumen – which was when
she had the idea for Reel
Gardening.
It was at the time when
organic food first became
a buzz word, she recalls.
‘My parents told me they’d
buy all my produce, if I started a food
garden,’ she says. Having learnt the
importance of managing input costs
from her past endeavors, she set out
to measure the available space, then
went to the nursery – where the
sheer variety and inscrutability of the
seed section left her stymied. ‘I didn’t
understand anything. Which variety
would be best for my little urban
garden? Which would grow fastest?
What was the difference between a
Floradade tomato and a Roma?’ Nor
did the assistant provide much help –
she seemed to think that as a packet
of seeds cost only R10, it didn’t really
matter how many germinated.
26 Get It Joburg Northern Suburbs April 20
Overwhelmed but determined, Claire
started by marking spaces of one
centimetre on her fingers, so she
would know where each seed should
be planted. But her attempt was a
disaster. ‘Seeds stuck to my fingers,
rather than the soil. Disheartened, I
asked our helper, Meggie, for advice.’
Claire was astounded to find that the
usually supportive Meggie had no wise
words for her this time, because she’d
met with her own crop catastrophes
when trying to start a food garden at
her home in Rustenburg.
For Meggie, the stakes had been
higher, though – with no running
water at her house, she’d carried a full
five litre bucket to her homestead
Miracle
in a box
Take one entrepreneurial teen, add water –
and seed, some newspaper and a whole lot
of inspiration. The result? Reel Gardening
seed tape, a gardening revolution.
every day, patiently sprinkling the
crops with water that could otherwise
be used for cooking or washing. She
was overjoyed when it looked as if
the first seeds had sprouted – only to
eventually discover the plants she’d
so carefully tended with such dearly
husbanded resources, were weeds.
‘That got me thinking – imagine if
there were a way to place seeds the
correct distance apart and to tell
which seeds were germinating so
you didn’t waste water on those that
weren’t,’ Claire says. She experimented
with placing seeds inside strips of
newspaper – and the system worked
so well that first Meggie’s neighbours,
then her mother’s book club friends,
demanded some of her ‘tape’.
When Claire entered this first iteration
of Reel Gardening into the Eskom
Expo, it did more than win the SA
Youth Water Prize – it also brought
her to the attention of then Minister
of Water Affairs and Forestry, Ronnie
Kasrils, who asked if he could partner
her with a University of Pretoria
professor to see how the seeded tape
could save water. When tests showed a
water saving of up to 80 per cent in the
germination phase, Claire was invited
to take her innovation to Stockholm,
where she beat a host of university
students and became the first African
to win the Stockholm Junior Prize in
Water Week.
‘I was incredibly excited.
This was a simple idea that
had massive potential.
Gardening had taught me
how much goes into food
production, and I realised
if other people knew this,
they’d be less likely to
throw away a vegetable just
because it has a black spot
on it. I thought this could
be a real solution for people
like Meggie, who’d be able
to ease their overstretched
budgets if they could grow
their own food,’ Claire says.
Even so, the idea of setting
up a formal business was
parked while Claire pursued
her studies in architecture
which, although not directly
related to her would-be
venture, taught her valuable lessons in
systems thinking, which she maintains
is essential for sound business practice.
While she was working as an intern
on an Anglo American mine housing
project, Claire revived the idea –
and the company was sufficiently
impressed to offer her a loan from the
Anglo American Zimele Small Business
Fund to get started.
So it was that Claire and Sean,
her husband, found themselves
researching everything from paper
to glue and seeds, finding the very
best in each category to create Reel
Gardening. Today, it’s a product highly
sought after by corporates looking for

creative gifts or marketing solutions,
which enjoys a strong retail presence.
It’s the company’s ongoing focus on
CSI (Corporate Social Investment)
Claire finds most thrilling, though.
With every sale, the company
donates a portion of seed tape to an
underprivileged school, and Claire
is hoping to see these communities
partnered with more affluent schools to
deepen its impact further still through
the company’s Learn&Grow Kit.
She’s immensely proud of what’s been
achieved to date. Reel Gardening has
been used by nearly 4000 school and
community gardens, improving the
food security of more than 1.2 million
people and saving more than 17
million litres of water . . . ‘and we’ve had
lots of fun along the way.’
Claire is also focusing on people who,
typically, don’t see themselves as
gardeners. Her goal is to help them
understand the wonder of a pastime
that’s so much more than a hobby.
What’s next? ‘We can’t reveal our next
project just yet – but it’s a big one,
which will see us employing more
than 100 people and link us to the
international market. We’re about
to enter a significant growth phase.’
Good news for gardeners
Seed tape is a more efficient form of
gardening than traditional seed because:
• There’s no guesswork – your seeds are
placed at the exact depth and distance
apart needed.
• There’s no wastage – because the tape
is clearly demarcated, you know where
each seed will sprout. Plus, birds can’t
get at the seed.
• It benefits the community and the
environment – the paper (which
is locally made and thus creates
employment opportunities) enriches the
soil with nutrients as it biodegrades.
OUTSIDE IN
As much as we love living and entertaining outdoors,
we also love bringing the outdoors inside. Let plants be your living décor.
Keep those indoor
plants well (but not over)
watered with this globe
watering can, R449 from
wrapistry.co.za
Tips for indoor plants
Don’t overwater. More plants die from overwatering than
underwatering • Keep plants away from direct sunlight. Most do well
with bright, indirect light. • Keep plants out of draughts and away from
heaters in winter. • Don’t let pots stand in water as the roots will rot.
Instead, place the pot on a bed of pebbles so the water is away from
the base of the pot. • Spritz or wipe the leaves every now and then to
improve humidity and remove dust from the leaves.
Green décor
This month we’re rediscovering the
beauty and benefits of indoor plants.
Not only do they bring a room to
life, changing the mood and adding
colour and texture, but they’re also
good for us … cleaning the air and
helping us relax. Here are a few
indoor plants which help create a
beautiful, tranquil space.
Trending trees
Indoor trees are the hottest trend
in interiorscaping. Weeping fig
(Ficus benjamina) is a popular
indoor tree, growing up to 2m,
with arching stems and glossy
green leaves. Good for a light
corner, on either side of a window,
a well-lit passage or patio. The
plants need moderate watering,
and liquid fertilizer once a month
in summer. Spritz the leaves to
keep them dust-free. Light green
leaves indicate a lack of nutrition.
Leaf drop may be caused by
under- or overwatering or a
change in temperature.
Peace in the home
The peace lily (Spathiphyllum) not only
removes certain household toxins
but also filters unpleasant odours and
produces clean oxygen. This compact,
well-shaped plant fits into any décor
style. Needing only low light to grow,
it’s ideal for bathrooms, bedrooms and
kitchens. Water once a week and don’t
overwater. It’s sensitive to cold.
Indoor elegance
with orchids
Is there anything more graceful or
elegant than phalaenopsis (moth
orchid)? We think not. Grow plants
in glass containers to display the
beautiful roots. The plants flower for
up to three months and are easy to
care for. They need strong, bright,
indirect light, and high humidity
for the best growth and flowers.
Drop two ice-cubes on top of the
plant once a week – this will supply
enough water. Alternatively, run
water through the potting mix for
one minute every three to 10 days,
depending on the season.
Good for beginners
Sansevieria Golden Futura always
looks elegant, doesn’t wilt, and
doesn’t take up much space, which
is why it’s become such a popular
indoor plant with interior designers.
It’s happy in a well-lit room or home
office and only needs watering when
the potting mix feels dry.
Indestructible
anthuriums
You don’t need green fingers to
keep anthuriums alive. They last
indoors for many years … all they
need is bright, indirect light in a
warm room. Let the soil dry out
slightly between watering and
don’t let the plant stand in water.
There are large as well as dwarf
varieties in a great colour range
from dark red/black, to salmon,
pink, yellow, shades of red and
white as well as bicolours.
Indoor plant of the month
Cyclamen is a traditional indoor winter flower, but none are as flashy as the
new Indiaka range with their two-tone colour-contrasting blooms, extra
flower power and compact growth. Plants flower best if given bright indirect
light in a warm room. Don’t overwater but keep the soil slightly moist. If the
pot is in a saucer, empty the saucer 30 minutes after watering. Fertilize once
a month with a liquid fertilizer for flowers. Remove dead flowers by pulling
out the stem from the base of the plant. This will encourage it to produce
more flowers. Details: plantimex.co.za
The dark side
ZZ plant (Zamioculcas) grows
just about anywhere, including in
areas of low light, although it does
better in brighter light. It’s also
valued for its air purifying qualities.
Plants can survive an amazing
amount of neglect, because they
need very little water, especially if
grown in low light. Let the soil dry
out between watering. A spritz
of water on the leaves helps with
humidity and removes dust. Give
them a liquid feed once in spring
and again in summer.
Eco-chic at its finest ... The Peech Hotel’s a gem
For a staycation for yourself, or a recommendation for a visiting friend or work
colleague, we don’t think you’re going to find anywhere in Joburg quite like
The Peech Hotel. It’s slap bang in the middle of cosmopolitan Melrose, but set
on an acre of beautiful gardens, it really is surprisingly peaceful and quiet … all
green lawns and lush shrubs and oversized elephant ears.
And green is a theme that runs through the hotel … from the carbon-neutral
environment, with water heating generated via solar energy to rain and grey
water from the baths and showers used in the gardens. We adore the new
rooms ... clean, contemporary, modern … with grids which will become living
walls once the jasmine that’s been planted grows a little more. It’s eco-chic at its
finest ... all gleaming oak floors, massive walk-in raindance showers, and spacious,
peaceful, private patios … perfect for coffee before breakfast, a quiet afternoon
tea or a glass of red before bed. For families, there’s a two bedroom villa … about
as luxurious as you could wish for.
You could, if you fancied (oh, we do), spend a few hours around one of the two
pools before exploring the area (and owner James’ wife, Vicky, who’s the hotel
sales and marketing spokesperson, has a list of unusual recommendations she
shares with visitors … lesser-known tours and interesting hot-spots).
A recent addition to the hotel is the new Basalt restaurant ... already talked about
as the place to dine. Head Chef Freddie Dias (with kitchen time spent in some
of the world’s finest Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as at Luke Dale Roberts’
The Pot Luck Club) has developed an incredible menu … you haven’t lived until
you’ve had his Ten-A-Day Risotto. It’s open to the public (top tip … book well
in advance), while the original hotel Garden Restaurant is reserved for staying
guests only (and the menu here’s no less impressive … the bone marrow and
parsley fries side is worth booking in for the night!).
There’s a good feel about The Peech. There are hidden nooks and crannies
for those wanting a little alone time, a central communal table in the dining
room for single guests wanting company and conversation over a meal, the
hotel is Fair Trade Tourism Certified, the staff hugely proud ambassadors, and a
percentage of your room bill is given to charity (the hotel supports Little Eden
home for children with severe intellectual disabilities). Originally a family home,
it’s retained that feel … really lovely, and hugely recommended.
Rates are from around R3250 a room, a night, children are welcome. 61 North
Road, Melrose, Joburg. Details: 011-537-9797 or reservations@thepeech.co.za
Close up with the cats
There are few times in one’s life
when you can stand right next
to two cheetahs as they laze
and roll about, gently gnawing on each
other’s ears. One of the main drawcards
for visitors to the lodge is, of course, the
on-site Emdoneni Cat project (now called
Zululand Cat Conservation), which has
been in operation for more than 25 years.
Guests visiting the project are given a
guided tour of the facility and invited to get
up-close-and-personal with the cheetahs,
African wild cats, caracals and servals on the
property. No petting is allowed and, since
its inception, more than 40 cats have been
successfully released back into the wild.
Wilderness adventures
The small coastal town of St Lucia,
less than an hour’s drive from
Emdoneni, is a treasure trove of
natural beauty and protected wilderness.
It is not uncommon here to see hippos
strolling down the street or spot rare and
endangered birdlife in the surrounding
coastal forest. The town borders the
iSimangaliso Wetland Park, home to four
of the big five and 220km of protected
coastline. A walk along Mission Rocks
beach is a must. Clamber over the rugged
boulders as you head north along the
pristine beach towards the sea caves that
are home to thousands of fruit-eating
bats. Enjoy lunch at a Cape Vidal picnic
spot under the trees before diving in for a
swim or snorkel in the warm Indian Ocean.
Then what better way to end the day than
with a sunset cruise along Lake St Lucia,
sipping a G&T as you watch a family of
hippo frolicking, half-submerged in the
water before they slowly emerge to graze
at dusk? Sheer African paradise.
Delicious homegrown
spoils
Nothing beats delicious,
sweet home-grown treats. Emdoneni
(and Hluhluwe) are the source of
two amazing natural spoils – honey
and pineapples. Bee-autiful Honey
(all-natural, hand-extracted honey
made by busy bees living in the
surrounding bush at Emdoneni) and
Mama Annanas pineapple products
(including a to-die-for spicy pineapple
relish, dried pineapples and pineapple
juice) are definite musts!
