Charming story behind creative designs 

Last month we told you about the oh-so-trendy accessories for men 

in the spring/summer range of Lalela Scarf ... and when we saw the 

new fine leather accessories, we gasped, ‘We want!’ We have a feeling 

you will too… The handbags-cum-clutches are adorable – and lovely 

accessories for wedding season. There are also some gorgeously 

bright luggage tags – handy for spotting your suitcase on the airport 

carousel. The most charming part? The artwork’s designed by 

youngsters in NPO Lalela’s arts education programme. The designs 

are then digitally printed onto the leather, giving the bags a natural 

texture. Lalela Scarf’s design director, Sandy Tabatznik, explains when 

scarves are worn it can be difficult to see the artwork. ‘I wanted to create 

a product that better showcased the beautiful designs by our students. Bags and

If you’ve noticed a change in our editor’s surname 

... it won’t be a surprise to discover she recently tied 

the knot with long-time beau, Brydone Graham. 

The Graham Wedding was a joyful affair, with the 

ceremony held at St David’s Marist Inanda Chapel 

(the school where Brydone matriculated) and the 

reception at Summer Place in Hyde Park. Among 

those who captured the smiles were photographers 

Lizelle Furter and Liezel Badenhorst, who described 

the wedding as the ‘epitome of elegance’ on the 

Patrick Furter – The Studio website. The couple 

beamed throughout their fairy tale day ... and their

In the pink 

There really is power in ‘pink’ … and mushrooms. The Power 

of Pink campaign, the South African Mushroom Farmers’ 

Association and Pick n Pay proved it at the campaign’s 10th 

anniversary event. The celebratory morning – held at the lovely 

33 Melville Road in Hyde Park – started off with a delightful 

breakfast followed by guest speaker, breast surgeon Dr Sarah 

Nietz sharing her wide knowledge of breast research and 

training. The crowning moment came when it was revealed 

that an impressive R553 778 was raised in 2019 from the sale of 

pink mushroom punnets at Pick n Pay. The funds will go towards 

reconstructive surgery for breast cancer survivors who’ve had

It may be a sad farewell ... but Andre The Hilarious 

Hypnotist brought huge smiles to Joburgers’ faces 

in one of his final shows in the city. Throughout 

February, Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist 

Farewell Tour entertained at Pieter Toerien Main 

Theatre before he jets off to perform abroad. We 

watched him hypnotise audience members to do 

everything, from pretending to be human washing 

machines to a Baywatch lifeguard ‘saving’ someone 

in the crowd. The show kept us on edge and we 

left with aching ribs from all our laughter.

Top tips for wedding shedding 

• Start as soon as possible to eliminate the last minute 

pressure. Instead of opting for an extreme ‘get thin fast’ 

scheme, invest time in building a lean lifestyle which will get 

results while allowing you to enjoy the process of getting 

there. This is the sweet spot, where getting and staying lean 

becomes effortless. 

• Don’t restrict your diet too much before the wedding. 

‘Most brides either take the diet too far and end up looking 

gaunt, or regain all the kilos they lost while on honeymoon. 

Besides which, there are so many celebrations happening 

around this time – do you really want to go without 

bubbles at your hen party?’ 

• Opt for weights over cardio. Weight training is like buying 

a house rather than renting, Angie says – the results are far 

longer lasting. 

• Don’t skip carbs! Firstly, why would you want to, when 

they’re so damn delicious! But more importantly, they’re an 

important source of energy and make meals more filling. 

‘Understand the role of each food group and how they can 

actually contribute towards your results,’ Angie advises. 

• Don’t try and figure it all out on your own! There’s a reason 

why people follow a map to get to their destination – it 

eliminates roadblocks and wrong turns. Similarly, find 

someone who can take the guesswork out of your nutrition 

and training and allow you to focus on what really counts. 

It’s difficult to imagine that Angie and her 

Michelle Obama biceps have ever had even 

a passing acquaintanceship with unwanted 

kilos – but not so. ‘As a kid, I was the opposite of 

athletic! I weighed 83kg by the time I was 13.’ 

Angie blames those kilograms on a love of 

food. ‘We didn’t eat a lot of junk, but we had 

very big appetites. My attitude was that as long 

as it was healthy, it was fine.’ That changed 

when, in her mid-teens, she and her sister (who 

shared her weight issues) decided to take 

action. It wasn’t long before Angie had shed a 

substantial amount of weight and, basking 

in the feedback she received, decided to 

keep trying to lose more. ‘But that’s just not sustainable. 

Inevitably, I got caught in the yo-yo diet trap.’ 

This is a phenomenon she believes most women can 

identify with. We want to live our best lives, sip gin and 

sleep in – but we also want a six-pack. That’s what starts the 

vicious cycle, Angie maintains – galvanised by weekend 

excesses, we set entirely unrealistic goals that, we promise 

ourselves, will kick in on Monday. Yes, we know the fads 

don’t work, but still we tell ourselves it’s perfectly possible 

to live on nothing but cayenne pepper and lemon juice 

water for months. 

It’s the desire to understand what motivates this behaviour 

that spurred Angie to sign up for a course in nutrition at 

Precision Nutrition, a US-based nutritional institute. What 

she learned blew her away. ’Like most people, I thought I 

could undo the damage of a pizza with an extra session on 

the treadmill. But fat loss doesn’t work like that.’ The truth is 

actually a lot more straightforward – it’s a simple equation 

of calories in, calories out. 

She reached another turning point when she realised the 

impact of weight training. Angie’s thought revolution was 

catalysed by her sister’s wedding, where the entire retinue 

had been instructed to wear white – a challenge for most 

women! She decided to mix up her usual cardio regime 

with high intensity interval training and, fuelled by the 

epiphany that she’d started to enjoy exercise rather than 

seeing it as a penance for her indulgences, moved on to 

weights. 

‘The results were beyond anything I could have imagined. 

I felt I needed to share everything I’d learned – it was as if 

I’d been given the weight loss manual I’d always dreamed 

of, and I wanted to give others the same!’ she enthuses. 

That signalled her entry into social media. She learnt about 

how to formulate a course and committed to posting 

one informative video each week. It was frightening, she 

admits – there’s a certain vulnerability in making yourself 

a public figure and opening up to the trolling that comes

with it. But her desire to empower other women dwarfed 

that fear, to the extent that by January 2019, she was 

ready to take the next step – launching the Lean Body 

Lab programme. To date, several hundred women have 

lost weight and built lean, feminine muscle through 

her programme, leaving Angie more inspired than ever. 

‘There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone 

change their body. It impacts on all areas of their lives. 

Imagine the woman who’d love to stand up in a meeting 

and share her ideas, but doesn’t feel she has the guts to 

do it, suddenly feeling strong inside herself because she’s 

developed the grit, determination and perseverance that’s 

part of getting yourself into shape.’ 

The Lean Girl brand has evolved, with its second 

programme (called Flourish) introduced this year. 

This provides a detailed meal plan for women who’ve 

completed the first course and therefore understand the 

basics of nutrition. It’s the practical application of all that 

knowledge, making meal prep easier, faster and more 

convenient. 

How does this Lean Girl live her brand? ‘I’m up at 5am 

every morning to meditate, because clearing my thoughts 

before the day starts really brings the zen. Then I have 

a cup of coffee [black, because I practise intermittent 

fasting] before heading to gym.’ Six days a week, she 

devotes an hour to an intense weight training session 

– weights, rather than cardio, because although many 

women fear bulking up, she’s adamant that it’s impossible 

for the female body to gain more than between three and 

five kilos in an entire year, even using heavy weights. You 

will, however, see a marked difference in firmness. 

Recently engaged to Gilan Gork, Angie says she’s not 

planning to lose a lot of weight before the wedding, 

although she wouldn’t mind putting on some more 

muscle. ‘I just want to feel my fit, lean, strong best!’ she says.

When asked about a day in her life, Mira 

laughs. ‘It’s frequently perceived as a 

glamorous job, but often you’re on your feet, 

working for 18 hours straight on the day of 

the event, with little time to eat or drink. You 

almost go into a ‘robotic’ state, where you’re 

living and breathing the work. You need to 

have a deep-rooted passion for what you 

do. It’s rewarding and beautiful, but it’s hard 

work – and I wouldn’t change it for anything,’ 

Mira says. 

Even though weddings can be the most exhausting, if Mira had to choose just one 

event to do forever, it would be weddings. ‘There’s something very special about 

making a connection with someone who’s planning one of the most important 

days of their life. Often it’s something they’ve been thinking about since they were 

little. To be involved in turning their dreams into reality is something I treasure,’ 

Mira says. ‘Every bride I’ve had the pleasure of working with has been an incredible 

person and each woman holds a special place in my heart.’ 

Mira is also enthusiastic about involving flowers in more than just décor. ‘They can 

be used as part of any planned activities such as learning how to put a bouquet 

together. The most popular activity actually incorporates my favourite way of using 

flowers – wearing them! It’s so much fun to spend a few hours making flower 

crowns and hair pieces – and the photos are just gorgeous. Every participant 

learns a new skill and can keep making their own for events in years to come. It’s a 

magical idea for any girly celebration, big or small!’

Making a flower crown 

Wearing flowers in your hair is a 

blooming marvellous way to dress 

up any event or outfit. Here’s how to 

make your very own ‘crowning glory’. 

You’ll need: 

Floral wire; floral scissors; floral tape 

(green); ribbon; flowers – a mix of 

flowers, greenery and filler flowers 

(choose those that aren’t too heavy); 

floral glue (for fine detail work) 

To shape the wire, wrap it round 

your head to create a size that fits 

comfortably. 

Tip: If you’re planning to wear it for 

a special event, measure the flower 

crown with the chosen hairstyle. 

1. Select flowers that complement 

the style of the event and the colour 

palette. Try to create a balanced mix 

of colour, shape and texture. 

2. Wrap the floral wire with floral 

tape, then make up small bunches 

with blooms, greenery (if any) 

and filler. Each bunch should be 

wrapped with floral tape from the 

base of the flowers to the ends of 

the stems. 

3. Fix the little bunches (1 to 3 

blooms, greenery and filler) with 

floral tape to the wire crown. Layer 

flowers over stems to create a 

seamless look. Shape in a clockwise 

direction. You may want to add focal 

flowers on the sides or middle. To do 

so, use floral glue. 

4. Complete the crown by tying 

ribbon on the ends of each side of 

the crown which can then be used 

to fasten the crown securely. 

5. Place the crown in a plastic 

container, store in the fridge and 

keep spritzing regularly with water 

(use a small water-misting bottle), to 

keep it looking fresh for a day or two.

Magic of Makalali 

Some of the best sightings SA reserves can offer. Charismatic field guides. 

And charming bush textures. An authentic African experience awaits.

From seeking big and small game to telling bushveld tales, the field guides 

take you on an extraordinary African adventure. 

There’s something wonderfully romantic about Makalali River Lodge, and 

the bathtubs that overlook the reserve are one of the highlights. 

A Land Cruiser’s engine roars into 

action. Hippos groan. Buffaloes grunt. 

These are (some of ) the sounds of 

Africa. They surrounded us recently 

as we sat at a waterhole in the 

26000-hectare Aha Makalali Private 

Game Reserve near Hoedspruit. 

What was that? A lion growling? No, 

it was someone’s stomach grumbling 

… time for sundowners. It wasn’t long 

before we were standing with a cool 

G&T in one hand, a stick of dry wors 

in the other. Aware of the wildness 

around us. 

On our first afternoon game drive we’d 

already spotted two of the Big Five 

and, during our short stay, we’d go on 

to see a further two of these big game 

animals, as well as a pack of wild dogs 

hunting impalas. 

We couldn’t possibly take credit for 

spotting the game first – the field 

guides and trackers are excellent (they 

tell us they ‘eat their carrots’) and 

they’ve a great sense of humour. When 

the message ‘We want to see a spotted 

leopard,’ reached our field guide during 

a game of broken telephone, he 

laughed heartily and joked, ‘Oh, you 

want to see a spotted leopard? Today 

we were going to look for a plain one!’ 

We learnt tourism group, Tourvest 

is educating even more field guides 

through a fully-sponsored course at 

the Tourvest Field Guide Academy, 

based at the reserve. 

The field guides make sundowners 

far from ordinary. On our last evening, 

lanterns were set up in a circle at a 

spot in the reserve. A gin bar to one 

side. Comfy cushions scattered in the 

middle. It was ‘Bush TV’ at its finest. 

Impalas and wildebeest grazed a little 

distance away, while daring blackbacked 

jackals crept close to the 

snack table, hoping to score a piece

of biltong. They didn’t! As darkness 

fell, we heard an unfamiliar sound … 

another of the Big Five! 

Yes, we’re bragging ... but with some 

of the best game viewing South 

African reserves can offer – trust 

us – it’s tough to leave the game 

drives. But the bush adventures 

continue at Makalali. You can 

choose to stay at the Main Lodge 

or River Lodge – both are set in the 

reserve without a boundary fence 

which fuels your authentic African 

experience. The décor, design and 

textures at these lodges scream 

bushveld, and swimming in any of 

the pools becomes a game-viewing 

experience. We watched warthogs 

wallowing in the mud near the Main 

Lodge pool. 

At night, an African tale and piece 

of sweet fudge was placed by our 

turned-down bed. One night, we 

found a little decorated box with 

a cute handmade pottery animal 

inside – ours was a zebra and there 

are six others in the collection. This 

lovely keepsake was crafted by 

artists from Gala Star – a company 

that enables underprivileged people 

to improve their lives by making art 

that’s sold in the tourism market. 

The luxurious rooms at the main 

lodge are hotel-like and cosy with 

a spacious bathroom … and an 

outdoor shower. You can get two 

rooms with an inter-leading door – 

handy for families. 

Planning a romantic getaway? 

Book for the River Lodge. Perfect 

for a honeymoon! And fret not 

when they don’t give you a key for 

your room – you don’t need one! 

The rooms’ design and decor are 

charmingly bona fide bushveld – 

think a mosquito net-draped bed, 

cosy fireplace and comfy seat on 

the veranda. And you’ll probably feel 

very, very clean because who could 

resist a splash in the oh-so-appealing 

outdoor shower, indoor shower and 

bathtub overlooking the reserve. The

goodness sake! 

A bush holiday isn’t really complete 

without dinner in a boma … try the 

sweet home-made bread and the 

venison meat dishes which have 

a uniquely African touch – think 

kudu potjie or crocodile sosaties. 

It’s definitely a ditch-the-diet kind 

of holiday … in-between brekkie, 

lunch and dinner there are pregame 

drive snacks – like decadent 

choc-chip cookies in the mornings 

and afternoon high tea – as well as 

bush coffees and sundowners in the 

reserve. 

In short ... when the toughest part 

of your day is dodging wayward 

hanging branches as your field 

guide seeks a terrific sighting, you 

know you’re in a magical place. 

Main Lodge superior rooms from R4520 a person sharing, for a maximum of two 

people a room and one child under the age of three in a cot. There are interleading 

rooms for a maximum of two people a room and children over the age of 

two will need their own bed, and are charged at 50 per cent of the adult-sharing 

rate. River Lodge suites from R6225 a person sharing with a maximum of two 

adults a suite. There’s one family suite for two adults and three children under the
