da Feltre, seines Zeichens Abdichter. Er
war dabei beteiligt, das Holz des Schiffs
zu konservieren. Er ließ sich am Ufer
des Gardasees nieder und seine Kinder
wurden im örtlichen Dialekt wahrscheinlich
„Feltrini“ genannt. Von da
ist der Schritt zu Feltrinelli nicht weit.“.
Spuren dieser Erklärung der Herkunft
der Familie finden sich auch in einigen
Büchern des Verlags Feltrinelli. Giangiacomo
Feltrinelli, der Verleger, gehört
zu einem anderen Zweig der Familie,
die Ursprünge sind aber gleich. „Alle
Feltrinellis kamen aus Gargnano. Und
alle hatten etwas mit Holz zu tun. Eine
Bestimmung, der nicht zu entkommen
ist. Wenn Sie Feltrinelli heißen, dann
kommen Sie aus Gargnano und Sie
werden irgendwann mit Holz arbeiten.“
Die Werft hat ohne Unterbrechungen
bis in die 1960er Jahre Boote gebaut.
Ihre Spezialität waren Motorboote,
sowohl für Rennen als auch für die
Freizeit. Die ganze Familie war rennbegeistert
und so waren sie die Ersten, die
von der Arbeit der Werft profitiert haben.
Aber sie waren nicht die Einzigen.
ERFOLGSGESCHICHTE
Viele berühmte Leute sind durch die
Türen des Unternehmens geschritten,
um schnelle Motorboote in Auftrag zu
geben. So auch Edmondo Turci, einer
der Kapitäne der MAS-Boote von
Gabriele D’Annunzio, der am Überfall
auf Bakar beteiligt war. Er war ein
begeisterter Bootsrennfahrer und
bevorzugte Boote von Feltrinelli.
D’Annunzios MAS wurde tatsächlich
von den Feltrinellis restauriert. Sie
waren es, die aus einem Kriegsschiff
ein Sportboot machten. Andere
Kunden der Werft waren die Schauspielerin
Eleonora Rossi Drago und der
Rennfahrer Tazio Nuvolari sowie sein
Neffe Luigi. „Ich bin 1964 geboren“, erzählt
Mauro Feltrinelli „das Jahr, in dem
mein Vater das Unternehmen übernommen
hat.“ Mitte der 1960er Jahre wurde
der Raum, den die Werft für den Bau
nutzte, zum Lager umgestaltet.
dialect. And it’s not a big leap from that to
Feltrinelli”. Traces of this explanation of the
family’s origins can also be found in some
books published by the Feltrinelli publishing
house. Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the publisher,
belongs to another branch of the family, but
their origins are the same. “All the Feltrinellis
came from Gargnano. And they all had
something to do with wood”. It’s an
inescapable destiny. If your name is Feltrinelli,
it means you come from Gargnano and you'll
end up working with wood. The shipyard
produced boats uninterruptedly until the
1960s. It specialised in motor boats, both for
racing and for pleasure. The whole family had
a passion for racing, and so they were the first
to benefit from the shipyard’s work. But they
weren’t the only ones.
STORY OF SUCCESS
Many famous people went through the
company’s doors to commission speedy
motorboats, including Edmondo Turci, one
of the captains of Gabriele D’Annunzio’s MAS
boats, who was involved in the Bakar raid.
He was a keen motorboat helmsman, and
Feltrinelli craft were his boats of choice.
D’Annunzio’s MAS was actually restored by
the Feltrinellis – it was they who turned it
from a boat of war into a pleasure craft. Other
clients of the shipyard included the actress
Eleonora Rossi Drago and racing driver Tazio
Nuvolari, with his nephew Luigi. “I was born
in 1964”, Mauro Feltrinelli recounts, “and my
father took over the business that same year”.
In the mid-1960s, the space the shipyard used
for construction was given over to storage.
Garda, unlike other lakes in northern Italy,
does not have many natural sheltered
harbours. And so as far back as the 1930s they
created the slipway for hauling and launching
boats, and invented what is today an
extremely widespread service both on lakes
and at sea: indoor storage. Another activity
that has continued unabated is technical
support, for both engines and hulls. Mauro´s
father focused entirely on storage, support
and sales, work that still continues today,
in some cases with ‘historic’ clients. These
are clients that are already in their second
generation, sons that inherited boats from
Die Familie Feltrinelli hat
eine Geschichte voller
Charme und Anekdoten.
1930 ließ der Dichter
Gabriele D’Annunzio sein
MAS 96, ein Motorboot zur
U-Boot-Bekämpfung, mit
dem er im Krieg heldenhafte
Taten vollbracht hatte,
bei der Werft in Gargnano
restaurieren.
The Feltrinelli family
has a story full of charm and
anecdotes. In 1930 the poet
Gabriele D’Annunzio had his
MAS 96, an antisubmarine
motorboat, with which he had
performed heroic deeds
of war, restored at the
Gargnano construction site.
Im Unterschied zu anderen norditalienischen
Seen hat der Gardasee keine
natürlich geschützten Häfen. Bereits
in den 1930er Jahren hatten sie einen
Slipway gebaut, um Boote zu Wasser
zu lassen und aus dem Wasser zu holen
und dabei etwas erfunden, was heute
Mauro´s
Vater entschied sich nur noch auf Lagerung,
Wartung und Verkauf zu konzentrieren
– eine Arbeit, die auch heute
noch, und in einigen Fällen mit „historischen“
Kunden, fortgeführt wird. Diese
Kunden sind bereits in der zweiten
Generation, Söhne, die Boote von ihren
Vätern geerbt haben und die wie ihre
Väter immer auf die Cantiere Nautico
Feltrinelli vertrauen.
EINE PARTNERSCHAFT FÜR
DIE ZUKUNFT
In den frühen 2000er Jahren wurde,
wenn auch indirekt, wieder mit dem
Bootsbau begonnen. „Als wir begonnen
haben mit Frauscher zusammenzuarbeiten,
baute Frauscher größtenteils
Motorboote für Seen, teilweise mit
Elektromotoren, aber ganz sicher keine
Rennboote. Als sie zum ersten Mal hier
nach Gargnano kamen, um die 757
Saint Tropez mit zwei V8-Motoren von
260 PS zu testen, erreichte das Boot
gerade einmal 27 Knoten.
Sie fühlten sich, als würden sie fliegen,
aber wir haben gelacht und gesagt,
da wäre wohl etwas falsch, denn mit
dieser Art Rumpf und diesen Motoren
müssten sie 40 Knoten erreichen. Wir
haben uns an die Arbeit gemacht, ein
paar Änderungen vorgenommen, das
Gewicht anders verteilt und 35 Knoten
erreicht. Im folgenden Jahr erreichten
wir mit einer neuen Form und
denselben Motoren die schicksalhaften
40 Knoten.“ Die Renn-DNA der
Familie Feltrinelli hat dabei geholfen,
their fathers and, like them, continue to turn
to Cantiere Nautico Feltrinelli.
A PARTNERSHIP FOR THE FUTURE
They started building boats again in the early
2000s, albeit indirectly. “When we began
working with Frauscher, their creations were
mostly motorboats for lakes, maybe with
electric engines, and certainly not racing
boats. The first time they came here to
Gargnano to test the 757 Saint Tropez with
two 260 hp V8s, the boat reached 27 knots.
To them it seemed like it was flying, but we
started laughing and said there was
something wrong, because that sort of hull
and those engines should get up to 40 knots.
We got to work, made a few changes and
shifted the weight, and got up to 35. Then
the following year, with a new mould and
the same engines, we reached the fateful 40
knots”. The racing DNA of the Feltrinelli family
helped to establish a relationship of trust and
collaboration. It’s an inescapable destiny. And
the future generations are aware of this too.
“My brother Dino is the engineering soul of
the company, and his son Diego is already
well on the way. My children are still studying,
but the hope is that sooner or later they will
take my place”. This is the way it has always
been. Mauro too took over from his father at
a certain point. “It happened suddenly.
I was already working at the shipyard, and
an Austrian client, who lived in an apartment
owned by our family, wanted to pay his rent in
the form of some electrical appliances. As well
as a television, he also had a fax machine – a
125V Panasonic, one of those American
models with a transformer. I went to my
father and told him that I needed it to send
quotes to clients more quickly, without
having to rely on the post. My father
disagreed, and said it was either him or the
fax machine. Shortly afterwards I took his
place in the office”.
