She speaks to Devon Bolger about her passion for gardening and love of the township How did you get started with the Springston Secret Garden? I have a son who is in year 8 this year at Springston School. He was in year 7 when we moved here. The school has a lot to do with the garden, they have their garden club over there. Anyway, my son found out about it at school and then told us about it. We went along to a working bee one weekend and then Sue, who used to take care of those things, asked if I wanted to go along to a committee meeting. I just got more and more jobs until I ended up becoming the co-ordinator. I am a stay-athome mum anyway so I have a lot more time on my hands than most people. What is the purpose of the garden? PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN to learn how to have their own garden. It also provides a space for families that don’t have room for their own garden at home to be able to grow food. People can come along and do a little bit of work and take home whatever they want. We also provide seeds and seedlings and what-not for people to be able to grow their own. We of course also do a lot with Springston School, we have the garden club and a few other clubs and competitions as well. They have their own little section of the garden so we do a lot to teach them. How can people get involved? We encourage people to come along whenever they can. We Cool store. Cool furniture. have a few different people that don’t like to use the weekends, so they don’t tend to come to the working bees which are typically on a Sunday morning. I have a couple of mums who bring their kids during the weekdays just for a bit of a potter, and for them to have a play. We really rely on the locals help out. Why do you think it is important to have a community garden? I think it is, especially with all of the Covid-19 stuff going on. When people were restricted and had to stay at home it was really amazing for us and our volunteers to be able to provide for their families. A lot of people were really struggling to get to the supermarket or get fresh fruit and vegetables delivered, I like that the garden teaches kids and their families to be able to provide for later. I got all of that from my grandparents and parents when I was little so it is nice to be able to have a safe environment for people to learn. Have there been any stand-out moments during your time with the garden? It would have to be working with the school kids, they are amazing. When they come in they run and are so excited and happy to be there. Everyone is just really keen to look and learn. It is really amazing to see how excited they get over the little changes in the garden and to see them really interested in their environment. Save a packet. We did a pollination party last year which was during the bee awareness month. We managed to raise enough funds there to buy all of the tools and equipment and seedlings that we needed for the season so now we are doing the autumn fundraiser. We are doing a raffle as well as a pruning demonstration so that has to make enough to get us through the next two seasons. Last year, we got a $1000 funding grant from the Selwyn District Council which was amazing. A lot of the people who support the garden will supply seeds or excess plants. We do really rely on donations and community support. We have had some really great donations from different local businesses. Last year Mitre 10 gave us 40 pairs of kids gloves. Usually, we had about 10 pairs and they would have to have one glove each. It was like Christmas for the kids. How long have you been living in Springston? We live really close to the garden which is very handy. We moved here from Hokitika for my husband’s job about a year ago. The property we are renting here is a really big and beautiful property but there is no food garden here, it is all ornamental. The boys have always been able to go outside and graze and just find whatever they want to eat so it has been a change for us. The secret garden helps to ease my addiction though. What do you like about living in the township? I really love that it is a small town. During Covid-19, it was amazing to have so much space to ourselves and It is really nice and peaceful in general. It is just tranquil. What is your favourite plant to grow? I love Kale even though everyone thinks its gross. I have decked out the garden in kale because we have it in everything. Silverbeet is a favourite as well because it just grows everywhere and anywhere and will just keep going and going. Could you tell me about your family? I am married, my husband works in property development. The Whitecliffs Township committee wrote a joint submission on the Annual Plan to ask that the project be finished by the end of the next financial year. Chairwoman Sue Wragg said the community has already been working on a section of the cycleway themselves. “When the district council said we couldn’t have the walkway until 2032 a couple of us got THE DOWN By The Liffey Gallery is opening again this weekend with a new exhibition. Titled Unlocked, the exhibition is a group show featuring work from all of the artists booked for the rest of the year who have had their exhibitions disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Over a dozen painters, potters and sculptors will be showing two or three pieces each in this eclectic and colourful exhibition, administrator Mike Glover said. “It has only been a matter our heads together and thought we can do this. “At the moment that section is almost complete to the old railway bridge,’ she said. Mrs Wragg said the committee is now asking the district council to bring forward the completion of the remaining sections of the cycleway. The committee is still accepting donations for the part of the cycleway they have undertaken to cover materials and engineering work. •If you would like to donate or get involved phone Sue Wragg on 318 2636. Gallery open this weekend of time before we opened again with the rules for social distancing and contact tracing now making it safer and more feasible for our mostly elderly volunteers to be there interacting with the public,” he said. Mr Glover said a few of the volunteers have decided to wait a bit longer before being in the gallery again.
