8 Wednesday June 10 2020 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz SELWYN TIMES News Bridget’s dedication earns award • By Bea Gooding COMPLETING MORE than 250 hours of community service was expected to take about five years, but Prebbleton resident Bridget Maw achieved just that in a matter of weeks. Because of her dedication, the year 12 Rangi Ruru Girls’ School student recently received a silver Student Volunteer Army award once she reached the milestone. “I was super excited, and it was such a great feeling knowing I was using my time to help other people in some way,” she said. The Covid-19 pandemic originally put her volunteering efforts to a halt. Prior to the lockdown, she had done about 20 hours of service; face painting at the children’s day event in New Brighton and watering native trees at Drayton Park, Mt Pleasant. She did not let the limitations of lockdown get her down and instead used the time to gather materials around the house to knit a blanket which was later donated to the Red Cross. “The idea came about when someone from the boarding house at school suggested knitting squares to be stitched together later as a blanket. “But after I knitted the first few squares, I decided to keep going and ended up making a whole blanket myself. “I was knitting 10 hours a day over three weeks and towards the end of lockdown I was doing about 11 hours.” When Bridget was not volunteering, she focused her energy on academics as she was undertaking triple science at school. Beyond high school, she wanted to study vet science, engineering or health sciences and planned to continue her charitable efforts moving forward. Nurse Maude was an organisation she held close to her heart and she hoped to support them more in the future. “When I was nine-years-old, SERVICE: Prebbleton resident Bridget Maw knitted a blanket over three weeks during lockdown that was donated to the Red Cross. my dad died of cancer and he received hospice care there and they gave my family so much support,” Bridget said. It was because of this that sparked her passion for volunteering at various organisations, knowing the impact it can have when someone took the time out of their day to help. She encouraged young people, now more than ever, to get involved with a cause or charity they were willing to back. Said Bridget: “It’s such a good feeling to see the impact you’re having on the community, whether it’s creating something or volunteering your time. “You never know when you’re the one who will need help, especially now during the Covid-19 pandemic.” Converted city girl comes full circle • By David Hill THE LAST thing Tai Tapu resident Lucy McPherson expected when she left school was to be working in the arable sector. The Foundation for Arable Research communications and events co-ordinator was brought up on a sheep and cropping farm near Leeston. ‘‘I had big plans of doing architecture and interior design at school, but I made a last-minute decision to do law and commerce at Victoria University, as I thought law might have better job prospects than architecture.” But after one year, Ms McPherson realised law was not for her, so she switched to a communications degree at Massey University’s Wellington campus. ‘‘I was very much a converted city girl, but Wellington just didn’t do it for me, and I just couldn’t picture myself working for a big law firm in Auckland. Ms McPherson returned home four days later and started work at FAR. Three years on, she is now living at Tai Tapu with her partner on a sheep and beef property, just across Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere from the farm where she grew up. ‘‘I have come a full 360 degrees. Somehow I have ended up back where I started,” she joked. I was one of 25 girls who petitioned to have an agriculture class and our young farmers club at school flopped because there wasn’t support from the hierarchy because they didn’t see it as something that fit with their culture. ‘‘So we all went off to study subjects like law or commerce, because that was what you did.
