Where We’re Eating
Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week
View
RESTAURANT, MARINA & BAR
We are strictly following
New Jersey’s COVID guidelines!
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe
even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Everything is a little different, but getting
a little less different now that we have outdoor dining. But, in the
interests of the public, we are still getting takeout from our local
restaurants to give you the gastronomic lowdown.
The place: The brand-new Vintage restaurant, nestled in the very
elegant grounds of the very elegant Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s
only Victorian house museum and home of Cape May MAC, which
rebranded itself after being known as Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts
and Humanities for four decades. A much more nifty name, to be sure.
The gang: Vintage is operated by the same peeps who are responsible
for, take a breath, George’s Place, YB and Shamone in Cape May, plus
Voted
Scola and another George’s Place in Cape May Court House, or COHO
as the cool kids call it. The miracle is that, despite having all these busy
THE BEST
restaurants, we always manage to bump into the same cool people who
Happy Hour
run these joints — Kate, Nikos, Yianni, Pete etc. We’re not sure how they
do it since successfully cloning human beings isn’t really a thing yet.
in NJ!
The vibe: There is seating inside, but you can see these guys are
hanging their hat on outdoor seating, even without the menace of COVID
hanging over us. And you can’t blame them. Sitting under a tastefully
lit canopy, gazing over gardens and beautiful Victorian architecture is a
Our outside deck is pretty rocking outdoor experience.
The food: We liked the size of the menu — seven starters and six
mains. That might seem minimalist, but they packed a lot of sexy
now open daily!
options in there.Jack ordered, for his starter, Los Pollos Hermanos, which
translates to the “Chicken Brothers” but which is actually a buffalo-baked
9:00am - 10:00 pm
chicken roll. For his main, it had to be Wild Boar Bolognaise because he
can’t resist papardelle pasta, and, let’s face it, wild boar with manchego
cheese is pretty good. Tastier than the much less exciting domestic boar.
Diane chose the Crimson Watermelon and the Sesame-Encrusted Ahi
See our menu on Facebook
The run-in: We chatted with both the aforementioned Nikos
or call 609-884-5444
(Goutzouris) and Pete (Karapanagiotis). Later, Jody Alessandrine, who
took over the helm of Cape May MAC in March, stopped by to say hello
954 OCEAN DRIVE, CAPE MAY
and to tell us the lighthouse was reopening. Good news!
The takeaway: For years, the only eating option at the Physick Estate
609-884-5444 ¯ HarborViewCapeMay.com was a tearoom. Vintage is a seriously sexy upgrade on that.
