Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe
even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Everything is a little different, but getting
a little less different now that we have outdoor dining. But, in the
interests of the public, we are still getting takeout from our local
restaurants to give you the gastronomic lowdown.
The place: The brand-new Vintage restaurant, nestled in the very
elegant grounds of the very elegant Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s
only Victorian house museum and home of Cape May MAC, which
rebranded itself after being known as Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts
and Humanities for four decades. A much more nifty name, to be sure.
The gang: Vintage is operated by the same peeps who are responsible
for, take a breath, George’s Place, YB and Shamone in Cape May, plus

Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
Growing up in Scotland, and being
treated to a very regular cycle of
horizontal rain and overwhelming
cloudiness, I always (like many of
my fellow Scots, and Brits in general)
got giddily excited by the prospect of eating
outdoors. This only really happened during
trips abroad — for Brits, that typically meant
Spain, Portugal or Greece.
When I moved to the States in 1998,
I loved, more than anything, those balmy
nights eating and drinking at curbside tables
in Manhattan. I’ve never lost that thrill. Which
is why the streets of Cape May right now are a
treat for my Scottish soul.
It’s one of very few silver linings to the
COVID pandemic. And I congratulate the
city councilmembers and city manager for
reacting quickly and imaginatively in helping
restaurant owners to try and reclaim something
from this disastrous year.
Life still generally sucks for store owners,
especially those who are unable to make much
from online sales. But I’m going to concentrate
on the positives. How cool do those
little tents look on Decatur, brimming with
customers from the Mug, Fins and Stewart’s? I
love what the Merion Inn did with their gravel
parking lot, and it’s cool to see tables spread
over the lawn at the Inn of Cape May.
And while it’s great to see outdoor
tables at Carney’s, Nick Filet, The YB and
Taco Caballito Tequileria (love their food, but
dear lord, that 11-syllable name kills me),
those concrete crash barriers and giant yellow
drums aren’t easy on the eyes. I would love
to have seen the city close off that section of
Beach Avenue entirely.
In fact, I’m hoping that councilmembers
are already thinking what I’m sure a lot of us
have been mulling this past week... can we do
something like this every year? It adds a little
European flair and gourmet sophistication to
the streets of Cape May.
Sure, there would be a loss in parking
meter income, but I have no doubt that every
restaurant owner who could add outdoor
seating would happily pay thousands every
year for the privilege.
Speaking of parking, I am a little worried
about how difficult it will be to find spaces in
July and especially August because of these
changes. So I’m wondering if now might be
the time to seriously consider the idea of a
parking garage, while greatly expanding the
opportunity to enjoy outdoor dining in this
wonderful little city by the sea.
I’m off now... to enjoy dinner al fresco!

What up, homies? If my spirits seem
brighter this week it’s because I
just spent the weekend singing
for live people for the first time
since March 16 and I’m also probably
still drunk from all the Tito’s I had last
night. Ironically, I cannot have potatoes on my
low-carb diet, but I can drink a drink derived
from potatoes because it has low carbs. The
mind boggles. Anyway, I wasn’t real sure how
singing on the ramp was going to go, but it’s
been just great. Except for all that sunshine and
fresh air. Gross. This week the Exit Zero Home
for Wayward Musicians will host Les DeRose,
Gregg Carpenter, Nancy Malcun and The
Honeyhawks before Tim and I (TNT Acoustic)
hog it for the weekend. Swing on by!
When I started writing this stupid column
in 2003 (or 2004, I’m never certain), I got a lot
of angry emails. EZ owner Jack Wright told me,
“Terry, you get so much flack because people
are jealous.” (At least, I think that’s what he said.
With that accent he could have been giving me
a recipe for shepherd’s pie and I wouldn’t know
it.) They’re also not as good (or humble) as me.
As I? Anyway, the same appears to be true of
the Facebook Indignation Squad (admittedly,
it’s a tiny group) and their criticism of our funky
cool gas station tiki bar. We’re sorry, oh mighty
Keyboard Warriors, that you don’t run the hippest
joint in town. If you did, you could do
whatever you wanted with it — chocolate fountain,
limbo contest, torch twirling. Whatever.
We decided to open a cool little spot for food,
drink and live music that 100s of people filtered
through this weekend. So stick it. Also? There’s

Karen Update: Apparently part of what set
off last week’s Karen was my reference to our
“hard-working, incredibly attractive staff” on
our Exit Zero voice message. I sort of get it, but
look, I’m not gonna lie to people — we’re all
incredibly attractive.

Also, after just downing three of them, I discovered
they’re super carb-y. Like, bad. This is why
I can’t have nice things… (But if you don’t have
a weight problem, grab some of these bad boys.)
I’ve been fat a long time now, which is
why I feel so dumb it took me this long to discover
pants with drawstrings instead of zippers

there… this whole time… and I never knew…

is filling out nicely. I just kind of
shave from the tragus (the little
flap in your ear that you probably
didn’t know had a name) down
to my jawline and clean up the
neck. I also hit the cheeks because
otherwise 85% of my face would
be beard and I’d look like that cake
guy from Food Network. As for
my weight, after a VERY up-anddown
week that saw me creep back
over 240 (Wednesday I shame ate
an Uncle Bill’s breakfast sandwich
and hosed half a ham-and-cheese
classic and bag of Herr’s before
bed) I was able to course-correct
and weigh in Sunday at 236. That’s
1lb lighter than last week and -16lb
overall. I am doing this for several
reasons — I’d like to live as long as
possible, I’d like to look as good as
possible, but mostly I want to get
lighter than Jack because I know it
will make him feel awful. I am 2.5lb
away from doing just that.
David Walter popped in to the
EZFS gift shop for a magazine the
other day. I said, “Flip to page 21
for a column by our handsome,
young writer, Terry O’Brien.” He
responded, “Young and handsome?
I’d like to meet him some
day.” BAM. Roasted.
Sweetheart of the Week: Ben
Cohen made his eagerly awaited
return to Cape May on Saturday
and handed me an envelope with
a card in it upon which he wrote
some of the nicest things anyone’s
ever said to me (and Tim,
and Cathrine, but mostly me…).
It was full of wit, pathos and, most
importantly, CASH. (The money
was nice, but the words would have
been enough. To be clear, I’m keeping
the money. Love ya, Ben!)
New Best Friend of the Week:
Johnny Rodriguez (along with his
fetching bride, Ashley) spent most
of last weekend at our tiki bar. We
swapped nerd credentials (we
both love Star Trek, comic books
and Orson Scott Card novels) and
my understanding.
There’s no reason anyone on
Earth should care about this, but
we received simultaneous calls
from Copiers Plus last Thursday.
(Listen, this column doesn’t just
write itself…)
Found a station rerunning my
favorite 90s sitcom, Newsradio, an
underappreciated gem that has
aged fairly well. Dave Foley, Maura
Tierney, Joe Rogen, Andy Dick,
Stephen Root… just an amazing
cast. But, like The Office stuck
around too long after Steve Carell
left, Newsradio should have hung
it up when Phil Hartman passed.
So this bad assorange and
black McLaren pulls in for gas last
week. I asked Cary, our gas station
manager, whose car it was. She
says, “Some old white guy.” A few
minutes later a man of about 30
emerged from Sunset Liquors, paid
for his gas and left in the McLaren.
Thirty. “Old.” I suddenly feel very
dusty. (Also, it was apparently
this McLaren that led police on
a high-speed chase down Sunset
Boulevard later that day. Man, I
wish I was that cool…)
Free Advice of the Week: We
here at Exit Zero Filling Station are
currently figuring out, on the fly,
how to run, in essence, our fourth
different restaurant in the last four
months. Ninety-eight percent of
the time this effort is seamless and
unnoticed because our kitchen and
management team do an excellent
job adapting and overcoming.
The ducks who appear calm on
the surface while paddling like hell
below. One percent of the time
we are humans who make human
mistakes. And one percent of the
time shit happens that we can’t
control. But I promise you, no one
wants you to get your food or drink
faster than we do, and if you find
yourself cursing out a server, manager
or owner because you had to
wait longer than anticipated (or
he eventually got up and played a because you ignored our instructions
not to leave home until we

It seems like if you want to make a movie
these days, it may be good to stay away
from the name Artemis.
Hotel Artemis (2018) stars Jodie
Foster, Jeff Goldblum and a number of
other well-known actors. This should have
been a quirky, fresh, stylish, dark and futuristic
flick. It fell short of that mark.
Foster plays the head nurse at a hotel in
Los Angeles that has been converted with
state-of-the-art medical equipment. The year
is 2028 and the “hotel“ is really meant for
underground crime lords (who must be members).
Our head nurse has a few simple rules
— no weapons, no non-members, and probably
the most interesting rule of all – don’t kill
the other patients.
The premise has great promise. The art
direction is outstanding. The scenes are beautifully
set up and the characters are strange
enough to work. Somehow, in the end, it just
doesn’t hold together. It’s good — you might
not be turned off in the middle — but at the
end you’ll shrug your shoulders and wonder

how it could’ve been better.
The other Artemis is one from Disney.
Artemis Fowl is a children’s book that I’ve never
read — full disclosure here. This film has a
militant underground fairy Corp. — stay with
me on this — undercover-criminal spies, and
a dome that stops time for everyone under it.
So there is enough confusion to go around.
Dame Judi Dench plays a commander
fairy. She walks around barking orders in full
costume fairy regalia, pointy ears — the whole
bit. You can’t help but think what must be
going on inside of her head. Something along
the lines of “My agent is going to hear from me
about this one!”
No, I don’t read any of the celebrity tabloids
or watch the TV shows to know whether
she wanted to do this movie or not. Colin
Firth is also in this movie. So it’s not without
its star power, but it is without a sense of
direction and clear storytelling either. And
with a budget of nearly $130 million, you kind
of wonder why.
Apparently, if you love the book, you were
disappointed that the movie didn’t stay true.
If you don’t know the book, you’re still somewhat
in the dark as the plot unfolds. And
the MacGuffin in the film — you know, the
movie term for that object everybody’s chasing
down — well they might as well just call
it a MacGuffin. It had that much thought
behind it.
So a couple “Artemis” films to avoid. Not
sure this name will be trending in Hollywood.

I
am often asked: “Where do you go on
vacation?” I always respond: “Living in
Cape May IS a vacation!” I follow that
with some good advice, which depends
upon whom I am addressing, but tends
to be along the line of, “Get a haircut and
wear spats!” or, “Button that tunic, laddie!” and
sometimes, “You’re a mess! Leave town!”
But truly, where DOES one go for a break
from Cape May? I do take 14 days’ “anti-cation”
every year, just to give me an added appreciation
for Cape May upon my return. Some years
Young Albert and I board our decommissioned
fast-attack boat The Edge of Reason and motor
up the coast in search of pirates (I say “pirates”,
when I actually mean “anyone we take a dislike
to”) and run them ashore/send them to
the bottom/draw alongside and shout hurtful
things, depending on our mood. Once, we had
a perfectly lovely time sitting just offshore of
Wildwood, snorkeling, sunbathing and shelling.
What’s that? No, no, whyever would I want
seashells? I mean shelling stray Wildwoodians
with the rather nice two-inch gun on the bow.
I have also taken in all of the world’s capitals,
expecting to be awed, but all were disappointing
compared to home. The Forbidden City?
Not a patch on the Admiral Hotel. Edinburgh
Castle? An anthill compared to The Marquis
De Lafayette hotel. The New York Times building?
have they even SEEN the Exit Zero offices?
If so, they would not dare call themselves a
newspaper. And every time, whether I have
returned by motor car, aeroplane, hot air balloon
or in a crate (my expedition to Borneo did
not go well), I have taken a deep breath of sea
air and been glad to be home.
Oh, this city is not perfect, not at all: I have
a love-hate relationship with Shoebies, as you
know (they adore me for my gentlemanly ways
and formal dress, and I despise them all), I am
not at peace with the notion that people should
purchase homes here and then leave them
empty for nine months of the year (I am thinking
of restarting the much-loved-but-troubled
“Wicker Man” festival whereby good fortune
and a fine harvest were guaranted by the sacrifice
of whichever maroon tooted his BMW
horn at me when I was crossing the street).
But for all of Cape May’s faults (I counted
three: two are above, the third is a person reading
this newspaper who knows who he/she is),
I walk the boundaries every day, breathe in the
scent of the sea, and realize that when one tires
of Cape May, one tires of life. This is actually
quite handy, because we take a dim view of
people who are critical of Cape May, and kill
them on the spot.

There’s a reason so many Cape May souvenirs
feature bicycles — the best way
to explore Cape May is by bike. Not
only is the town flat enough for easy
riding, it’s also pretty, and it changes
constantly, so there is always something new
to look at. There’s also something nice about
using a machine associated with the Victorian
era to explore our Victorian town. And, because
most adult bikes are just about six feet long, you
can use them to estimate safe social distance,
which comes in handy these days.
Take a short ride around your hotel’s
neighborhood, or a more ambitious ride out
to Cape May County Park, to Historic Cold
Spring Village for a curbside brewery pickup,
or to the ferry terminal. Plan out a route in
advance, or just drive around and check out
things like construction projects — local contractors
are surely accustomed to a steady
stream of amateur foremen silently assessing
their work. Look at houses for sale and dream
your dreams. Rent a stylish beach cruiser and
ask a friend to do a photo shoot for your social
media. Pick out the stores you’d like to pop into
when the days of popping in return. Soon, there
will be garage sales to scout.
Avoid parking hassles by biking to your
outdoor dining experience or to run errands.
Pick up your books at the library — curbside
pickup is coming soon. Bike to this year’s version
of East Lynne’s “Tales of the Victorians.”
Stories will be told in backyards instead of on
porches, every Thursday at 4 p.m., through
August 13. Reservations are required and attendance
is limited to 10 — call 609-884-5898 or
email eastlynneco@aol.com. Admission is $5
at the “door” and free for guests under 12. Wear
masks and maintain social distance. No food
or drink will be served, but you may bring your
own beverage. No restrooms will be available.

The city of Cape May offers a free bike map on
capemaycity.com with information and tips for
bikers — where to rent a bike, and where you
can find a public restroom — they are generally
open from about 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The promenade
is open to bikes from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. —
and if you think you’ll have the place to yourself
at 4, you’re underestimating the energy of the
town’s early birds. Bring your mask and wear
your helmet. Lock your bike whenever you
leave it and please be patient at the crowded
bike racks.

It would be hard to imagine South Jersey
beaches without Laughing Gulls, or
the “Summer Gull,” as they are known
locally. Yet at the beginning of the 20th
Century, Cape May’s beaches were all
but devoid of Laughing Gulls, their maniacal
“Ha-Ha-Ha,” call not even a echo in the memory
of bay men. The birds had been hunted
to near extinction for their feathers and their
eggs collected for the table. In all New Jersey,
there was but a single vestigial colony in the
marshes behind Wildwood.
Despite their reputation for pilfering
French fries, our Summer Gull is an active
forager, not a born klepto. Agile enough to
snap greenhead flies out of the air. This time
of year, most LAGUs are found foraging on the
beaches of Delaware Bay, where they patrol
the water’s edge snapping up free-floating
Horseshoe Crab Eggs.
The other day I sat on a New Jersey beach
and enjoyed the sight of 1000 Laughing Gulls
lining the water’s edge. That colony is the
largest in the world and the gulls deposit their
eggs on floating wrack. Tide comes up, wrack
rises, eggs stay dry. Pretty ingenious. The
problem comes when there is an unusually
high tide and chicks. With young in the water,
adults are frantic, and their cries reach the
level of a din. But the chicks can swim and
judging by the health of today’s gull population,
the gulls have matters well in hand. In
fact, Laughing Gulls are expanding their range
northward. Once uncommon north of Long
Island, the birds are now breeding on islands
off the coast of Maine.
I’m inclined to believe that this northward
expansion was spurred by the over harvest
of horseshoe crab eggs, which led to gulls
searching for another food source. And yes,
I know Laughing Gulls are reviled for their
French fry pilfering predilections. But taking
food from the hands of people is a learned
trick. The gulls do it because some band of the
human spectrum thinks it’s cute to have their
picture taken feeding the gulls.
So, in gull country you mind your fries
or lose them. Every year I get a call from at
least one reporter who wants to discuss “the
gull problem.” To which I reply, “that’s not a
gull problem, that’s a human problem — one
directly linked to our poor food husbandry
practices.”
So, mind your fries and do your part to
keep a good gull from going bad. They’ll repay
your kindness by scoffing up greenheads to
feed their young who are as partial to greenhead
porridge as humans are to French fries.

Peter Shields on the east side of town is lovely
and Sapore Italiano on the west end is a good
choice as well. The Answer Lady has heard
there is a delay in servers getting the tip if it is
put on a credit card. We are not sure if this is
accurate, but you cannot go wrong with a cash
