light foot and careless ease over meadows<br />

ankle-deep with buttercups. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se her<br />

happy moods we all fall to be<strong>in</strong>g happy too<br />

every poet th<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>of</strong> rhymes to fit a sonnet<br />

every musician reaches down his fiddle ; and<br />

everywhere <strong>the</strong>re is such a twang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> lyres,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> madrigals, danc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> ballads, war-<br />

bl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> ditties, and universal chorus <strong>of</strong> praise,<br />

that it is enough to turn <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> any god-<br />

dess, to say noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a mere m<strong>in</strong>or deity<br />

and <strong>simple</strong> country nymph. And all <strong>in</strong> a<br />

moment—lo I—she changes ; she frowns ; she<br />

is cold ; she s<strong>in</strong>gs no longer ; she puts on sad-<br />

coloured robes ; she is as forbidd<strong>in</strong>g as poor<br />

!Miss February with her sealsk<strong>in</strong>s, her red nose<br />

her frozen toes, and <strong>the</strong> cold <strong>in</strong> her head.<br />

Alas ! poor May. Then <strong>the</strong> lyre, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>orbo,<br />

<strong>the</strong> viol, <strong>the</strong> bagpipe, <strong>the</strong> scrannel straw, <strong>the</strong><br />

lute, <strong>the</strong> dulcimer, tabor, and pipe are all, with<br />

one consent, silenced and put upon <strong>the</strong> shelves;<br />

<strong>the</strong> musicians sit down, sad ; <strong>the</strong> poets tear up<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir unf<strong>in</strong>ished lays ; <strong>the</strong> sonirs cease ; every-
