and be left <strong>the</strong>re by tliem on <strong>the</strong>ir return.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> cliildren grew older tliey went<br />

fiir<strong>the</strong>r afield, so that <strong>the</strong>re was no part <strong>of</strong> tlie<br />

forest whicli <strong>the</strong>y did not know. They be-<br />

longed to <strong>the</strong> forest ; wlien <strong>the</strong>y left <strong>the</strong> houses<br />

and crossed <strong>the</strong> great meadow which stretches<br />

away from <strong>the</strong> road, and found <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> broad green way which, like a made road,<br />

runs here <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> very heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were at home. The lanes which lead right and<br />

left from this green road were known to all <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m; <strong>the</strong>y are lanes <strong>of</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>gy turf; over<br />

<strong>the</strong>m are <strong>the</strong> boughs <strong>of</strong> oak and elm and birch ;<br />

beside <strong>the</strong>m, sometimes across <strong>the</strong>m, are tufts<br />

or clumps or little jungles <strong>of</strong> hawthorn, honey-<br />

suckle, elder, and blackberry ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> sunlight falls<br />

on <strong>the</strong>se lanes through <strong>the</strong> leaves and is always<br />

s<strong>of</strong>t, and <strong>the</strong>re is a cont<strong>in</strong>ual shift<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> light<br />

and shade caused by <strong>the</strong> movement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

branches. The children explored all <strong>the</strong>se<br />

lanes and knew whi<strong>the</strong>r each one led : where<br />

<strong>the</strong> broad way <strong>of</strong> turf widened out <strong>in</strong>to an
