He puffed out his clieeks as lie spoke, and<br />

<strong>All</strong>en, though he regarded Sir Charles as <strong>the</strong><br />

greatest <strong>of</strong> men, thought <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> frog <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

fable, while Will began to wonder whe<strong>the</strong>r it<br />

was <strong>the</strong> add<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> tliose books wrong which<br />

had made him wliat he was. 'They made<br />

your fa<strong>the</strong>rs, lads. Now which <strong>of</strong> you <strong>three</strong> is<br />

best <strong>in</strong> arithmetic ?<br />

The o<strong>the</strong>r two po<strong>in</strong>ted to Will, who blushed,<br />

but did not deny <strong>the</strong> accusation.<br />

' Well,' said Sir Charles, ' I hope you are<br />

all good at figures. And what is your ambi-<br />

tion, Will?'<br />

' I shall try, sir, not to fail,' said <strong>the</strong> boy <strong>in</strong><br />

his downright way.<br />

Mr. Colliber laughed sarcastically, Sir<br />

Charles looked uncomfortable, Mr. Skantlebury<br />

coughed beh<strong>in</strong>d his hand.<br />

'Ah! yes— good. And you, Ol<strong>in</strong>thus?'<br />

asked Sir Charles.
